"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live with what that return will look like. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning, laura. good morning, marcus. as the omicron surge starts to wane, san jose state is bringing students back with the idea that the pandemic is still with us. most of the courses are designed to be 40% virtual so that all

students aren't back on campus at the same time. students resume classes online exclusively in late january, but with the covid cases dropping and positivity rates dropping and high vaccination rates on campus, the interim president says it's time to find a way to just live and learn and work with covid, and that was his message to the campus community. we talked with the president of the associated student body who says that faculty has gotten very creative in reaching students where they are. >> i had access to amazing faculty and they really led us through the change. so i have to give drops where it's due. and so there was a period where we had online labs and we were able to use things like ai technology to do those classes and still provide a high quality education. >> reporter: so san francisco state students are also returning in person today. uc berkeley, santa clara

university, cal state east bay, stanford, just looking around the bay area, they have already been back in person. in preparation for this return to campus, san jose state did host vaccination clinics and testing so that people could come back with peace of mind. so hopefully everything will go smoothly today. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:03 right now, and really hoping for an update later today from san francisco firefighters on a fire they put out overnight in lower nob hill. this happened on larkin street near sacramento. one person suffered minor injuries. it's not clear how many, if any of the residents were displaced, and so far there's no word on a cause. >> swiftly and decisively. that's how president biden says the u.s. will act if russia invades ukraine. the president spoke with the president of ukraine over the weekend, as the u.s. warns russia could breach that country's borders at any time. jackson joins us live from capitol hill this morning. the clock is ticking as world leaders are trying to avoid this invasion. >> reporter: that's right, laura. well, u.s. officials say there is a distinct possibility that the more than 100,000 russian troops stationed near ukraine's border could invade. over the weekend president biden took part in an all-out push to try to de-escalate tensions between russia and ukraine. meanwhile, u.s. officials are warning that time is running out when it comes to finding a diplomatic solution. now, more u.s. troops arrived in poland sunday in support of nato allies. the biden administration says it's preparing for russia to attack while stressing american soldiers will not fight in ukraine if it does. the escalating tensions are also top of mind for the ukrainian community in the bay area. at st. michael ukrainian orthodox church in san francisco, there are continued prayers for peace.

>> i want to only ask mr. putin and mr. zelensky to talk and stop the war. >> reporter: and while the world waits to see russia's next move, the u.s. is urging americans in ukraine to evacuate now. president zelensky has invited president biden to visit ukraine to help de-escalate the situation, however it's unlikely that president biden will travel to ukraine, considering that the u.s. is warning americans to leave. in washington, i'm brie jackson for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. more breaking news this morning. the duchess of corn wall has tested positive for covid-19. camilla parker bowles is self-isolating. it was announced that her husband also tested positive last week. the duchess is fully vaccinated and boosted. happening later today, fans will celebrate an oakland

raiders and nfl legend. the coliseum holding the celebration of life for john madden. it starts at 5:30. john madden died on december 28th at the age of 85. most recently he lived in pleasanton, but for ten years he coached for the raiders, taking the team to seven conference title games and winning the super bowl in 1976. his remarkable second act really started when he got behind the microphone, cementing his legacy. bay area sports writer explains his appeal. >> he never got technical things that you have to know to be a football player now. he kept it simple, he kept it easily understandable for the casual fan, and as such, he helped make football the national game. >> true that, true that. all right, now, fans must purchase a ticket to attend tonight, but that money is going to the madden charities to

assist oakland youth. >> such a classic man. more history being made at the winter games, courtesy of american athletes. a live look at the olympic flame in beijing, where it's about 10:00 p.m. and monday's competitions are wrapping up. a member of team usa making some history around the globe with her gold medal win. >> "today in the bay's" janelle wang live in beijing this morning. you actually got the one-on-one sitdown with erin jackson. >> reporter: yeah, very giddy exciting day. history made here in beijing. erin jackson wins the women's first individual gold medal in speedskating in almost 30 years. the last time was bonnie blair. remember her? that was back in 1994. the 29-year-old is also the first american black woman to ever win an olympic speedskating medal. i sat down with her one-on-one earlier today. what's next now for you?

are you going to go for the next olympics? are you going to relax? >> i'm going to relax for a little bit, but definitely going for the next olympics. i feel like i can't stop now when i'm just figuring out how to skate on the ice. it's really started to come together in the last couple of years. >> reporter: yeah, she was a professional roller skater and just started speed skating on the ice first years ago. you can hear more from erin at 7:00 a.m. on "today" right after "today in the bay." an update on alpine skier mikaela shiffrin, competing in the women's downhill that's happening in prime time. this was her during her training run on sunday. this will be shiffrin's fourth event at the games and she has yet to win a medal. in her two previous olympics she has won two golds and a silver. two teammates are from our area, keely cashman from the town of strawberry near lake tahoe and alex wilkinson of santa cruz. we have a breaking news update on russian skater kamila

valiyeva. she will be allowed to compete after testing positive for a banned substance, a heart medication that can increase endurance. the ioc decided just hours ago there will be no medal ceremony for the women's figure skating competition which begins tomorrow if valiyeva wins a medal and no medal ceremony for the team competition, which russia won over a week ago and team usa won silver. so that process still in the works. the legal battle still going on. and, again, the women's figure skating competition begins on tuesday and two out of the three women competing for team usa are from the bay area. alyssa liu of richmond and karen chen of fremont. we'll be rooting for our usa girls and i'll have an olympics update coming up at the bottom of the hour. >> the bay area always represents at the olympics. it's so impressive. >> can't wait to see what they do. >> reporter: right, we have like 30 athletes from california, the most contingency from any state

in the country. and more than half are from the bay area/lake tahoe area. we're very athletic. >> we're very proud of them, too. >> winning. thanks, janelle. and if you're keeping track of team usa's overall medal count, here's a spoiler alert. we're going to reveal the count now as the music plays. >> this is just the count. if you don't want to see that, close your eyes. when the music stops, open your eyes. ♪ 6:10 on your monday morning. time to get a look at weather and traffic. let's check that forecast right now with kari. are we going to see a cooldown today? >> a big cooldown today. we broke many records again yesterday afternoon, but today we're going to struggle to make it to 60 degrees and it's going to be windy. so that makes it feel even cooler. and then as we get a look at

what else to expect this week, it gets a little more comfortable, especially by friday, as the sunshine continues. also as we're looking ahead in the forecast, we're watching some distant rain chances, not happening in the next seven days. as you head out the door in santa rosa, it's foggy, temperatures in the upper 40s. you can see the temperature trend that will slowly warm up today and mostly sunny skies by 1:00, but notice that we're still in the 50s there. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week coming up. mike, how is it looking in the tri-valley? >> the volume is starting to build a little bit, but i'm concerned with a couple of reports. you'll see westbound 80 at the top, around the off ramp there, there's a disabled vehicle. i think they've made it to the center divide and there was a little slowing. now it's cleared up. the other arrow, there's a crash just past 680 on westbound 84, and that may add to a little slowing, although we have not

seen anything really grow over the last few. we have seen the drive for highway 4 and slowing for 37, as well as the incline for the bay bridge slow as well. not a lot of backup at the toll plaza. no metering lights. and san jose's slowing cleared up where i've circled. >> thank you, mike. these days it's no wonder avocados are green. ahead on "today in the bay," why avocado prices may have you saying holy guacamole the next time you're in the produce department. >> well, they certainly advertised them on the super bowl, avocados, but it's a different ad that may have been way over-effective. let's take a look at the futures. we've got negative numbers and that's, of course, a concern over the fed, but also the situation in ukraine. >> and how does sober dating sound to you? it's the way a new app is helping people who don't use drugs or alcohol find love this valentine's day. if you're interested, make sure you stick around. if you're not, stick around

we'll talk about cooler temperatures in the forecast coming up. >> we're looking at the nimitz, a clear view getting a little more crowded. still at the limit here, but right here by the coliseum it will get crowded this afternoon and through the evening. we talked about the celebration of john madden. that will be a factor for the nimitz after work for a lot of folks. well, good morning. very happy valentine's day to you and very happy monday as well. i assume you saw that unusual super bowl ad with the bouncing qr code. if you hadn't, here it is one more time. now, i didn't have my phone with me when this first came on, but it lasted a whole minute, allowing someone to say, all right, fine, i'll grab my phone and scan it. turns out it's an ad for coinbase, which handles cryptocurrency. now, some people think that cryptocurrency is the future, others think it's kind of silly. but what both sides can agree on is those who hold cryptocurrency

benefit most when more people come in to buy cryptocurrency, and the ad brought in a lot of new customers. so many, in fact, coinbase was knocked off the internet for a bit after the ad ran. the company is also warning the $15 in cryptocurrency giveaway it's offering has been duplicated by some scammers, saying in a tweet, a quick note about security because it's super important to us, the only way to be eligible for our bitcoin giveaway is to sign up for an account by following this link. if it didn't come from us, it could be a scam. considering coinbase and scammers would both ask for your tax information and bank information, that's worth paying attention to if you're considering buying cryptocurrency. other news, walmart has told its employees they don't have to wear masks if they're vaccinated and in places that are allowing regular people to take off masks. the stock market continues to be uneasy about the potential

russian invasion of ukraine. oil prices continue to soar and of course you've got the fed rate hikes ahead. our kris sanchez telling us about the first day of class at san jose state and also the first day for this store on the campus. it's a cashier-less store for the students, much like we've seen from amazon. extra helpful in a time of pandemic. you don't have to stand in line or interact with anyone. and likely the future even post-pandemic. >> the ability to walk into a store, shop, leave and you get your receipt automatically, and we really view this as the future of shopping, the way the world is going to shop in the future, and we're trying to deliver it everywhere. we're excited to be bringing it to this store. >> i've tried this a couple of times up in the amazon go stores. there are a couple of them now in san francisco. still feels a little weird to grab a pack of gum and be on your merry way, but you can also say that's the future. why do i need to stand in a line

to pay $1 or $2 for a pack of gum when it just charges to my phone. >> dangerous, though, when you've got a lot of kids like me. >> hey, what was that? >> candy bars aren't a quarter anymore. 6:19 right now. the u.s. has halted imports of mexican avocados after an inspector received a threat. the move came on the biggest sales day of the year for mexican avocado growers, but it did not affect gameday consumption. the price of avocados are up 59% year-over-year, and with the imports halted, they are expected to shoot higher. hold the avocado toast this morning. new this morning, a dating app creating a safe space to find love for people who don't use drugs or alcohol. >> it's called sober dating and it was created by a divorced

woman who experienced challenges finding a man after committing to abstaining from alcohol. one former apple employee helped her with the idea to make it a reality. she says the app really helps eliminate at least one of the potentially uncomfortable conversations. >> you know, a lot of people don't feel comfortable saying -- you know, clicking that box i don't drink. and when do you tell someone that you don't drink. when you onboard to the app, there are so many different questions that peel back the layers of what is important to the user. >> now, she says that it was important for her that the app is open to many different lifestyles. there are 21 different gender identifications users can select on the app. it's 6:20 right now. monday morning. kari has a look at our forecast. a little bit of a cooldown. >> yes, much cooler as we've had temperatures breaking records over the past few days. well, now the cold front is sweeping on through. we can see the clouds with it as

we take a look at our satellite, as it continues to move into northern parts of sonoma county this morning. we can see the low clouds that are over the south bay right now. our temperatures feel mild as you're stepping out the door. then take a look at the trend that doesn't move that much, especially compared to what we've gotten used to. it's going to be a cloudy start, but then we'll gradually start to see the sun coming out and our temperatures only making it into the low 60s. as you're getting the kids ready for school, we are going to start out with temperatures in danville mostly cloudy, temperatures in the low 40s, and some upper 50s at pickup time. maybe they have those little treat bags for classmates. we're going to see cool temperatures continue over the next few days with the low passing to the east of us. our dry weather continues, but with the first system moving in we may be seeing a change in our pattern that could open up the door toward the end of the month for the next one that comes in, which could bring us a little

bit of precipitation. it is good to see that we could see at least some lows coming close to us that could bring in that chance of rain. and it doesn't look like a lot here, even as we run the computer models out about ten days, maybe a tenth of an inch of rain and we know we need significantly more. so we're going to be watching that chance. looking at our temperatures, this will be changing quite a bit. we're starting out cool, gusty winds today. and more of the same tomorrow with some calmer winds. then we see our temperatures heading up by the enof the week with highs in the valleys reaching into the low 70s, then it gets cool for the weekend as we are looking at temperatures in the low 60s. san francisco will have highs reaching into the lower 60s. mike, things seem to be relatively calm on the roads. >> yes, looking great to start the week. there's more volume. in fact, they just turned the metering lights on at the bay bridge.

kari. >> it's cloudy and foggy and we're a little cooler. where we're starting this morning will be like the temperatures we'll see this afternoon, with a little bit more sunshine. we have a big drop in temperatures coming our way and you add in the wind and it's going to feel a lot cooler. this week we will have more sunny and comfortable weather, but we're also watching some distant rain chances. we'll talk about that a little bit later. but let's get you out the door, ready for work in pleasant hill. parts of the east bay waking up, temperatures in the mid-40s. you can see the trend that will reach into the low 60s and it's going to be much different than the upper 70s we had over the past few days. we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up. >> sounds good. 6:32 right now. we're moving you forward as more bay area locations become mask-free again. wednesday things will change statewide, but happening today, another bay area school district is loosening it is rules.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live to tell us about what's changing. >> reporter: starting today, students who attend burlingame school district can take off their mask when they are outside on campus. they still have to wear it indoors, but outdoors they are allowed to take off the mask. burlingame joins other school districts like san francisco unified, east side unified in san jose and the san ramon valley unified, districts that already allow students to take their masks off outside on campus. starting just after midnight on wednesday morning, as you were alluding to, the state will lift its indoor mask mandate for offices and businesses for people who have been vaccinated. you can see on your screen the city of berkeley, eight other bay area counties will follow the state's guidance. santa clarita county will continue to require masks indoors, though it's expected to lift its indoor mask requirement within a matter of weeks. so, again, the lifting of this mask mandate on wednesday only applies to office places and

businesses. you are still required to wear them on public transit, inside schools, health care settings, senior facilities, correctional facilities, and homeless shelters. this week governor newsom is expected to announce plans for how california moves to the endemic phase of covid when it comes to issues like community surveillance and testing protocols, and, of course, masking for students in schools. >> we are in the process of transforming our public education system and moving out of this pandemic mindset and that includes masks and that will happen. the question is when. >> reporter: the governor told us that he hopes to have the state's plans for the endemic phase of covid happened out by this thursday. reporting live here in burlingame, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> new things to follow. thank you so much. the city of berkeley is also dropping its mask requirements in most indoor settings. uc berkeley is following suit

and that has some on campus outraged. if you missed our report, you can check it out on our website. head to nbcbayarea.com/coronavirus. 6:34 and continuing coverage on the supply chain crisis and how it may impact your next hoelts stay. according to a survey by the american hotel and lodging association, hotel operators are seeing a 79% increase when it comes to cleaning and housekeeping supplies. 94% of them say their establishments don't have enough staff. so the bottom line here, your stay at the next hotel or place you stay, well, it probably won't be the same. a separate survey by the associated general contractors of america shows that 20% of construction materials costs are up. i sat down with scott anderson, the chief economist with bank of the west, and i asked him if there's any relief in sight for us. >> why is this crisis still having an impact on our prices? do we see an ending in sight

here? >> not yet. we got another hot inflation report for january and no sign of a slowdown from january's hot price increases. so we're not completely out of the woods yet. i think a lot is being driven by very strong demand. we had unprecedented support from both monetary policy and the federal reserve, as well as the pandemic relief bills, and consumers have saved a war chest of excess savings of about $2.7 trillion in the united states, which they want to spend here. it's being driven by goods and durable goods, so we're seeing a lot of inflation coming from used and new vehicles, for example, from the pandemic lows, used vehicle prices are up 88% from april of 2020. so these are some eye-popping price increases. we're seeing them very broad based now across the board. >> wallets are stretched thin. hopefully you have good news

here. is there anything, any advice you could give to people to try to make things work out for the best? >> well, just be really aware of the prices you're paying. if you're going to the supermarket, you're probably seeing 13%, 14% increases in things like eggs, milk. you've really got to be price sensitive and price conscious in this sort of environment and really got to be paying attention to where your prices are going up and look at a budget, try to budget for things like food, gasoline, every month and see if you can stick to the budget. that will help you weather the storm until we get prices under control. >> it seems like a lot of people are being out-priced by their budget. thank you so much for your time. >> and the conversation didn't stop there. i actually spoke with scott about much more, including the prices, the cost of vacation home prices, and airfare. you can watch the full interview on our nbc bay area streaming app.

download it on roku, amazon, apple tv. the san francisco 49ers sacked by a ransomware attack. the team says they recently became aware of a network security incident that disrupted its corporate i.t. network. a ransomware gang claims it stole the team's financial data and recently posted some of it on a dark website. so far, the cyber criminals haven't publicly asked for ransom. the 9ers say they notified law enforcement and hired cybersecurity firms this help. the team said we have no indication that this incident involves systems outside of our corporate network, such as those connected to levi's stadium, operators or ticket holders. sun is coming up over downtown san jose. new national weather service numbers confirming something you probably already knew, the bay area rainy season quickly evaporating.

check out rainfall levels since the start of the new year. san jose nearly 4 inches light, san francisco and oakland right around 5 1/2 inches below normal, lake berryessa is close to 8 inches. this is all since january 1st. kari, the early season rains really just saved this from being a whole lot worse. boy, we could use some rain and snow in the sierra. >> yeah, and it's been a while since we've had any rain. we're now going into day 38 without a drop of rain, and usually our stretch of dry weather during the middle of the winter is about 20 days. so we're going well above that and it looks like this stretch of dry weather will continue. you throw in high winds and it will continue to add green patches to the brown we're seeing in some of the hills right now. take a look at our rainfall surplus. we do have a surplus for many spots, but san jose is dipping into a deficit of about 1 1/2 inches. so we're seeing the surpluses

lineup that forms at the bay bridge. the metering lights were turned on about 25 minutes ago. this isn't bad, but it's the beginning of the big backup as you head up the incline toward san francisco. we'll talk about the bigger view of the east bay and perhaps the impact of some of the fog coming up. >> thank you so much. quarter until 7:00 right now. president biden spokes once again with president putin over the weekend. >> scott mcgrew, it doesn't sound like much was accomplished. >> no, i mean, the two sides are really not able to see each other's point of view. putin wants a promise the ukraine will never be a part of nato. we're not willing to promise that about any country at all. the white house issued still photographs taken around the time biden spoke with putin. one of several calls the two leaders have had over ukraine. biden promising swift sanctions and punishment. now, there's that word "swift" again. every statement from the u.s. government over the past few weeks has contained the word

swift. swift is also the name of the communications system the world banks use to talk to each other about money transfers. to cut the russians off from swift would hurt their economy very badly. the world seems split, though, as to whether biden and the white house would actually do it. the russian government has sent out a few pieces of video, the sort of conflicting messages in them. one is video of putin on the right meeting with russian foreign secretary lavrov, featured on russian television and re-posted on social media. now, we're waiting on an official translation, but dependable russian-speaking reporters on social media say the conversation is lavrov proposing more diplomacy and putin agreeing. but the russian military is sending out new video this morning of fighters on maneuver in belarus, ready for action, and perhaps most alarming to military experts, russian artillery and armor are left transports and support systems

moving forward on their own. the white house has said repeatedly americans will not fight in ukraine, but the u.s. is warning mistakes could be made and conflict between the u.s. and russia would result. >> you are absolutely raising the stakes of miscalculation and certainly increasing the possibilities that american troops and russian troops would come into contact and in combat with one another and then this takes off to a whole new level. >> that interesting picture between lavrov and putin on social media. lots of people trying to analyze that, figure out what it means. it seems like a good sign. we're talking about it, too, on social media. on twitter you can follow me @scott mcgrew. >> thank you. 6:47 and happening today, immigrant rights groups around the bay area and the nation are taking part in a day of action. today is a day without immigrants. this is where some supporters will protest by not attending

work or school. protests are also planned, including outside the federal building in san francisco. supporters will call for congress to pass the build back better bill, which they argue could give more people a path to citizenship. the bill is now at a standstill in congress. delirium in la la land, as the rams win the super bowl. but some of it may have gone a little too far. why does it get crazy? new video of last night's celebrations which went late into the night in the l.a. area. in some cases things got pretty intense. police had to disperse crowds. there were reports this morning of vandalism and looting. now, on the field the rams won a thriller over cincinnati. mvp cooper kupp scored a touchdown with less than two minutes left. cincinnati had one last chance, but on a fourth down the rams pressure got to joe burrow. the rams beat the bengals 23-20.

kari has a look at our forecast for today. a good day to get cozy with the one you love. >> yeah, absolutely. it's going to booler than the weather we had over the weekend, and here is why. we can see with the long line of clouds this is actually out ahead of the cold front that's going to sweep through here in the next few hours and make it windy and feel a lot cooler. so as you're getting the kids ready for school this morning in danville, drop-off time, we're mostly cloudy, in the low 40s. it will be mostly sunny, but only in the upper 50s at pick-up time. make sure they have their gift bags for their classmates and enjoy the day with valentines parties. we're starting with temperatures in the upper 40s, low 50s as you're heading out the door. through lunchtime it's still in the 50s in oakland, but we're starting to make it into the low 60s in san jose and los gatos and then going into this afternoon, reaching about 62 in santa rosa, 64 in the south

county and temperatures dropping tonight after the evening commute and sunset. we'll see some of the numbers back in the 40s and low 50s. we're seeing the changes as the low moves through and it may bring in light snow flurries for the sierra. we are seeing a change in our weather pattern with high pressure moving out of the way. with the next system that comes in, most likely that won't be until the end of the month, maybe about february 22nd, we could see a chance of some scattered showers and more snow. but each day without rain we are seeing our surplus continue to shrink and we're also looking at some gusty winds. take a look at our ten-day forecast. we're starting down for the start of the week and then we start to warm up by the end of the week, then we're back down for the weekend as temperatures will drop off once again with another cold front passing by. we're looking as temperatures that will start out in the low 60s for highs and then we get milder for the weekend.
