one of many recent ransomware attacks has put personal information in jeopardy. scott budman tells us what we can do to protect ourselves. >> the merging of crypto currency and football didn't just happen during sunday's super bowl ads. the 49ers were hit by a ransomware attack by a group of cyber criminals claiming to have gotten access to private information stored on the team's it network. >> i don't think it's a coincidence this happened around the super bowl. >> ralph is president of a cybersecurity company. trackers will tell you sports teams and events are frequent targets of cyber criminals. they're high profile, often have lots of money, and treasure-troves of personal financial information on fans and ticketholders. >> what a criminal would try to do is take your social security, your address and open up an

account or some kind of a, could be credit card, an account somewhere elsewhere they could monetize it. >> now for how crypto plays into this, the group claiming credit for the attack is set to be part of a ransomware gang known to attack networks. holding data hostage until they get paid. their ransom of choice these days, crypto currency like bitcoin, partly because it's harder to trace than traditional money. >> ransomware tends to target whatever is the largest target they can with the most money where they can cause the most threat and pain. >> the 49ers say don't believe hackers got any customer data and they don't have a ransom demand yet. they also say they've alerted law enforcement and reached out to cybersecurity companies. ransomware gangs have been active lately, hacking into both tech companies and media outlets. security experts say if you

think your private data has been compromised, change your passwords and look for any suspicious activity with a credit agency. nbc bay area news. california's indoor mask mandate expires in less than 32 hours, which means in every bay area county, except one, you won't have to wear a mask at most indoor places if you're fully vaccinated. ahead of that change, doctors say if you're older than 65, have a compromised immune some or have young children at home who aren't vaccinated, consider continue wearing a mask. >> i think some people should wear masks. we're not all the way down the mountain yet. we're about two-thirds anned there's still a virus floating around. if you go back in time, we're kind of like where we were around christmas. >> santa clara county is the one bay area county that won't be

relaxing its mandate on wednesday. schools, hospitals, public transit will also continue to require face coverings. now we're getting word that courthouses in san matteo, alameda county still require masks. one bay area school district is not waiting. parents are glad their kids are back in the classrooms instead of learning remotely. >> yeah, he's happy. he's in a great school. you know, he probably will wear his mask. he's so used to it. either way, i'm final with it. on or off outside. >> other bay area school districts that allow students to remove masks outside include san francisco unified, east side and san ramon valley unified. san jose state is welcoming students back to campus, however, each course is designed to be about 40% virtual. students resumed classes online

exclusively back this late january and with numbers easing, the interim president said it's time to find a way to live and work with covid since it's going to be here for a while. student body president says faculty members really helped moral, too. >> i had access to amazing faculty and they really led us through the change. so i have to give props where it's due. and so there was a period where we had online labs and we were able to use things like ai technology to do those classes. >> sf state has students back today. uc berkeley and cal state east bay have been back already. here's a live look at the olympic torch ahead of another day of competition. team usa is already high on hardware, bringing in more medals this weekend with 16 total for the usa. so far. liz is live in beijing. she's got more. liz.

snowboarding for the women and men coming up. red gerard, a good place to get a medal there. mikaela shiffrin in the downhill skiing event then curling round robin play. the u.s. teams, men and women, playing switzerland today. curling just seems to be such a big hit every four years at the winter olympics. there's really a cult following. normally, the curling stones are very big and heavy, made of granite. this is just a little souvenir curling pot here that i'm keeping my valentine's candy? . >> you're getting way with a lot of stuff over there. enjoy. thanks a lot. we spoke with a team usa athlete after she added her name to the history books. >> i read you started speedskating just like, four, five years ago.

to fly. >> it wasn't a fear of flying. coach was claustrophobic. >> the former bus had what was state-of-the-art technology, including a huge satellite dish on top to watch football games. >> he loved his fans. he was just in awe of the add ration from the fans when we got there. it was amazing. i had never seen anything like that. >> bay area sports writer described him as the last genuine television figure in american sports. >> he kept in simple. easily understandable for the casual fan and as such, he helped make football the national game. >> madden died december 28th at his home in pleasonton at the age of 85. the transit authority is paying tribute to the icon by designating this 40-foot bus as the memorial madden cruiser.

campaign trail and not delivering. even if his biden's efforts are bogged down in the senate, he can still do something to protect immigrants who are here. >> at a bare minimum, we know the president has the authority to issue an executive order that can grant pps status or a temporary reprieve to everybody. >> the trump administration had tried to end temporary protective status to many people living the u.s. from nine countries. in october of last year, the biden administration extended that status and added people from haiti, myanmar and venezuela. in san francisco, nbc bay area news. nbc bay area responds to a south bay woman who says delivery delays left her with a saggy looking spa. >> yeah, how a team got her out of some not so hot water. >> does a dip in a hot tub sound relaxing?

so far, the january would be the only one to safely and reliablely do it again by the end of the century. one of the reasons why is places like the sierra which hosted the olympics in 1960 are no longer seeing a snow pack. in the past two years, we've only had two winter seasons where we exceeded 100% of the average snow pack. >> we see our numbers of incredible snow pack and that was still might happen. still might have those great seasons where we're seeing tons of powder, but that reliability and that consistency of having that know pack won't necessary by there there. especially as the temperatures increase. we sort of tow to line. is it going to be falling as rain? >> john spoke with one of the climate scientists behind the study. she also looked at how much

going to kick up the wind for tomorrow. but we're not seeing a major rainmaker with this because the way is system's dropping down, it's just continually moving over land so not a good chance to pick up moisture. but it looks like it's going to spin up a little snow here. 11:00 p.m. tonight, chance of drizzle over the coastal areas. right through the santa cruz mountains. maybe a little drizzle here for the south bay. but rain and snow through the foothills and the sierra starting tonight and continuing into tomorrow. so be prepared for winter conditions if you're going up to tahoe as you move into tomorrow's forecast and not a whole lot of snow. not the big storm system we need, but about 1 to 2 inches will continue to make those roadways slick. and really for the rest of the month it's looking pretty bleak here for us. i don't see any big storms moving in. so this will likely go down as one of the driest februarys on record the way things stand now. as we roll into tomorrow morning's forecast, make sure to have the sunglasses and jacket

overnight to celebrate the team's super bowl victory, but some of those celebrations went too far. >> always do. the lapd described some of the postgame demonstrations as violent and destructive. fans were seen climbing on cars and lamp posts. police say others used the win as an excuse to loot and vandalize various businesses. ultimately, police moved in, broke up the most destructive celebrations. we don't know how many people were arrested, but a bunch were. the team is busy preparing for a peaceful, they're hoping, parade and celebration of the team's one. that's going to happen on wednesday. that's going to do it for us. thanks for watching the news at 4:00. ross says there's going to be love in the air in the "olympic zone" tonight. >> that's what we're sticking around for.
