thursday. thanks so much for making us part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. >> if you've got ma smart tv stream us on all the apps and "today in the bay" streams also online. >> let's get a look at the forecast and motorcycle will have a look at the commute in a bit. kari, inching closer to the weekend and the temperatures are still nice and in season for us this morning. >> yes. really nice these past couple of days. that does continue today. we're starting out. a live look outside in san francisco. no fog. so it's another clear start, and take a look at these temperatures you'll feel as you're stepping out the door. mainly in the low 50s and mid-50s for parts of the north bay and as we go down to morgan hill, that's the cool spot, 40 degrees and as we go into the rest forecast, we are going to see the temperatures warming up from the upper 40s to low 50s and low 60s at lunchtime and then going into the middle of

the day. we're looking at highs that will reach into the upper 60s and a few spots hitting 70 degrees. we will talk more about that in the forecast coming up. mike, any issues for early morning commuters. >> one less to worry about. we're looking over to the caldecott tunnel. it's open now. caltranz crew cleared it overnight throughout north bay, across the bridges, a great drive and the venetian bridge, scott mcgrew, watch out for the palm trees. no warning from chp but scott mcgrew has his eyes on the trees and the road. over to you. >> thanks, mike. we're moving you to big developments on the covid front. today, governor newsom planning to announce his new plan on how we transition from a pandemic to an endemic. this would mean that we deal with covid on a regular basis, like we do with the flu. now we're seeing this move as

most people here in the bay area no longer have to wear masks indoors. here's "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney. >> the governor is not giving details of his plan to transition to the endemic phase of the covid. we cannot predict the future so we will have to remain flexible and adaptable for it. ucsf infectious disease expert says california is ready to treat covid as endemic with a 73% vaccination rate and a truckload of therapeutics arriving in hospitals. >> many countries have dropped the mask mandates and vaccine mandates and passports and others are keeping it. so i don't know when we'll see it, but everywhere we'll get to the same point once we get enough immunity that we'll manage this as we do other respiratory infections. >> as to what could lead to a return to a mask mandate. >> it would only if our hospital capacity gets strained which may mean we have a more virulent

variant, and somehow that variant is invading on immunity that we'd probably have more masks but actually the cdc next week says they are only going to link masks to severe diseases. >> masks are no longer required at retail stores, theaters or gyms at all bay area counties except for santa clara. masks little are squared at hospitals, airports, and schools k-12 in all counties. >> reporter: for some people whether or not there's a mask mandate, no matter what the governor says tomorrow, they have their own strategy to deal with covid. >> rob stevenson at smitty's bar is double vaxxed, boosted and very confident. >> in a grocery store, doctor's office, but outside of that, i'm okay going into a place without a mask. >> others are masking up period. >> i'll wear one whenever i go indoors. doesn't matter where i g.haven't had a cold for two years and i think it's nuts that we don't

good thursday morning right now at 4:40. we're right now at 57 degrees in san jose. it's going to be warm as we go into this afternoon, but this temperature right here is actually going to be warmer than the high we'll have next week so we're still on the temperature roller coaster. we'll talk more about that and what's ahead in our forecast coming up. >> well, we're looking at the ups and downs of the san matteo bridge, up towards the westbound. there was a actual lyght down from -- towards the east bay with the headlights.

no problem in either section for this stretch. let's see how the world of business is. >> reporter: good morning. wall street is set to open lower as investors digest earnings report, updates from the federal reserve and the crisis between russia and ukraine. stocks ended little changed yesterday, close off the loads of the session minutes from last month's fed meeting showing the central bank is creeped to hike interest rates and reduce its massive balance sheet as market watchers had already expected. reports on unemployment and housing starts and we'll get earnings from walmart and there will be a union election that organizers say next month putting amazon on track to face two union elections in the same week. the national transportation safety board plans to be counting ballots from an alabama warehouse in the redo of a

there's still a closure there right at the bridge so watch the bright side bridge, typical overnight closures so use mission and 680 to get around it. southbound 280 just past 380 on the peninsula, there is a disabled vehicle there that might be blocking one lane. no slowing, but they have to run a traffic break to clear that from the center divide. >> easy flow coming across the golden gate bridge. no backups to the bridges, but, kari, chp said the venetian bridge might be gusty. >> wind also helping to keep our skies clear. no issues with fog. take a look outside of walnut creek. people heading out the door, milder conditions and breezy conditions continue.

45 degrees. temperatures will stay with us through 8:00 and then we'll start to warm up with the sunshine heading towards late morning into the afternoon. let's go to the south bay and see where we'll end up later today reaching 67 in morgan hill and 68 in milipitas. so these temperatures are going to be like it was yesterday. it was so nice out there and hopefully you had a chance to enjoy it. if not, that continues today and as bottom of the screen we will have a couple more days of some nice warm oak reaching up to 67 degrees. it will be cool near the winds hazard statement continues and for redwood city in the mid-60s for the mission district and north bay highs reach up into the low 70s for santa rosa and sonoma. once again, we'll have the chance of recurrence and this continues until 7:00 in all of our koval area.

we're still getting all of the storm systems off the coast, but none of them are coming our way as they continue to move well to the north. there could be a couple of systems moving in over the next couple of weeks. we could see a change in this as we get the lows kind of passing to the north and to the east of us. it will bring in some cooler temp two, and we'll see if we can at least squeeze a little bit of rain out of it. then as we take a look at our ten-day forecast for spotlight santa rosa where temperatures are going up and down, we're on the upward trend right now and then going into the weekend we can see that sharp drop-off in temperatures and by next week we may see highs only in the upper 50s and then start to warm up once again. we do have dry weather in the forecast. low 60s in the inland areas, and we'll also have a cooldown in san francisco but that's after having a nice, warm, wild weekend with that sunshine. and in today's climate in crisis, there's this daily chore that we all have doing laundry,

and it, of course, can be something that -- can be bad for the environment, and here's a report on how to save the laundry and planet. >> it's laundry day and my favorite thing is to go to bed with nice clean sheets and one of the things i use to use dryer sheets but here's the problem with the single-use sheet. they are typically made of a polyester sheet made with fabric softener and other chemicals that smell god. according to an environmental website eco-watch they have chemicals that can irritate your skin. every time we toss one we're increasing our carbon footprint. get this, they don't actually do anything to clean our clothes. >> hey, it's time for your

climate hack. what can you do to get rid of the static? a great alternative are the dryer balls. you can use them over and over again and they are known to cut down on drying time as well, and if you're using about mission the great skrent, a great option is to take up of your favorite essential oils, put a couple of drops on the wool ball and run them with the dryer. here's the payoff. real simple reports saying using dryer balls can cut energy use by 25%. that's cutting down your carbon footprint quite a bit and if each dryer ball lasts 1,000 loads and you're doing one load a week, we would avoid using 70 million dryer sheets if everyone used the dryer ball. >> for poverty stories click on nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate in crisis.com.

to nurse it back to the health. causing problems in tahoe, a big bear responsible for dozens of break-ins and the new steps trying to stop it have been stopped in its track. >> now a north bay city just given money to help those struggling in the bay. awarred more than $18 million to buy and convert a motel into 54 permanent homes. this is part of project home keys, an initiative launched by governor newsom to help the state's homelessness crisis. since the original haunch the state has awarded more than $1 billion to start the program. we'll be right back.

we are looking at at bear that's causing massive headaches for people in tahoe. there's been several calls to police and wildlife over the last couple of months. the reason. there's been several break-ins, often with people inside. wildlife is trying to capture the bear. if captured the bear will be euthanized because it has become too dependant on humans and right now no sanctuary is agreeing to take him. a big vote is coming on the proposed new $12 billion ballpark for the a's. they will consider certifying the review of the park at the terminal. they voted unanimously to recommend that the council
