we're going to see another plunge and a big dip heading into next week so we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. want to get you started about moving forward. as california turns the page on the covid pandemic. governor newsom today, later today, he's going to unveil his new plan for the endemic phase in an exclusive interview last week. we said the plan will include mass testing to spot new surges and virus variants, and it will also continue an included emphasis on vaccinations and booster shots as well as a plan for public schools. yesterday, california ended the statewide mask mandate for most indoor locations. our bob redell will have more coverage on that coming up in the next half hour. >> all right. 5:01 and figure skaters' signature event happening right now at the 2022 winter games. the women's free skate. team usa will have a big -- will

liu in igt-in and karen chen in 13th and mariah bell in 11th place. just a few hours ago i spoke with vincent zhou of palo alto out of quarantine after testing positive for covid over a week ago hemp was asymptomatic but had to withdraw from the men's individual competition. he said it was a really dark time and one he will try to block out moving forward. >> how is your mental health right now? >> well, i tend, to you know, keep a level head and stay grounded. i'm pretty good at seeing different perspectives. i think i'm doing okay. it's -- it will be impossible for me to feel great about what happened here, but i think there's still plenty to be

medal tonight. one of those medals flow skater brittany bowe. she wins bronze and you know her. she was the flag bearer in the opening ceremonies and also gave up her spot, if you remember, to erin jackson, one of her closest friends for the 500 meter speed skating event. she knows erin was the best in the world because you saw it live here earlier this week. erin jackson won gold in the 500 meter. brittany still has the 1,500 meter to compete in. >> those are pretty impressive medals. >> they are heavy. >> they are. >> i want one. >> you better start practices. >> if you're keeping track of team usa's overall medal count. we'll reveal the count now as the music plays. >> be sure to look away from the screen if you don't want to see the count. once the music stops, turn bark around.

>> all right. 5:05 for you this morning. happening today, former vice president mike pence set to make a bay-area appearance. he's stopping at stanford for an event organized by stanford republicans. kris sanchez is live on campus this morning. this and other recent events making people wonder if pence is gearing up for a presidential run. >> reporter: yeah, but today stanford is gearing up for that visit by vice president mike pence and the university preparing for possible protests because the event has a pretty provocative title called how to save america from the woke left, so this is what we saw outside the venue here on the stanford campus. pens's visit was organized by campus republicans, and it's the former veep's third campus tour stop across the country. our political analyst larry gersten thinks that pence might be laying the groundwork for a

potential 2024 run and might try to establish himself as the true conservative even if donald trump runs again. >> going to all these campuses is his attempt to build his own base of very conservative evangelical republicans and there are a lot out there. it's a good place to start. >> having people like mike pence and scott walker and ben shapiro come to this campus gives student an opportunity to hear about important issues with a different perspective, whether they agree with him or don't. >> reporter: the event which was flow for students and a limited number of people from the public is now sold out, so anyone who doesn't already have a ticket will not be able to get in. pence is expected to speak for 40 minutes and then he's pected to answer questions for about another 20. at stanford, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. now to developments in the russia-ukraine border. despite russia assuring the world its troops are pulling back, u.s. intelligence sees no

signs of that, and the white house is still in overdrive trying to bring about a diplomatic solution. "today in the bay's "brie jackson live in washington this morning. brie, this situation, of course, has the attention of world leaders everywhere. >> reporter: good morning, laura. absolutely. the russia-ukraine crisis is likely to be a major topic of conversation at the u.n. security cans, an animal meeting on the minsk agreement which helps end fighting between russian-backed separatists and ukranian troops but implementation has stalled. this comes as ukranian and russian forces say each have fired across the cease-fire line in eastern ukraine. ukraine's military says russian's military fired shells at a building hitting a kindergarten. the military said there were no injuries. video released by joint forces operation press service showed a pile of bricks inside the

kindergarten room, holes in a wall and a shell crater in the ground outside the kindergarten. as tensions rise, the biden administration says russia is adding thousands of troops at its borders. russia released video claiming the forces were rulg back but u.s. and nato allies now say those are false claims. russia has added as many as 7,000 troops to the estimated 150,000 stationed near ukraine owes border further facing fears of an invasion. >> we're at a window where it can start any time and our concern has only increased in recent days. >> reporter: world leaders say they are in an all-out push for diplomacy, but u.s. officials also sending a clear message to americans in the region leave now. vice president harris and secretary of state blinken will be in europe for the security conference or headed to europe for the security conference

where this is going to be a major topic. back to you. >> all right. brie, thank you. 5:09 this morning. digging deep near a ripple effect from the drought. the state department of water resources release new findings on a gradual sinking of land which commonly occurs in groundwater pumping. water pumping rates are more common in drought conditions. the new interactive data in the maps showing some of the areas where the land is sinking most and it's happening most frequently in the central valley. in some cases the land levels last year sank as much as one foot. at the same time, overall rates were lower than previous recent drought years. >> take a live look at downtown san jose inching closer to the weekend. get a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> yeah. we're waking up so some milder temperatures in spots. we were just talking about how dry it's been. let's get a quick update on our water year as we've seen the numbers really start to slip

into a deficit, even after that great start to the water year we had. right now we're seeing water levels going below where we normally are at this point in february as this stretch of dry weather conditions, and we're seeing our temperatures right now in the upper 40s and low 50s except for the south county where the temperatures are much cooler this morning to start, but it will be a warmer day. take a look at our temperature trend in pleasant hill. as we're getting started temperatures in the mid-40s, and we'll be in the low to mid-60s by lunchtime. we'll be watching that. mike, what are you watching for morning commute? >> a couple of notes. right now we're watching overall centers on the roadways and you're seeing the green that dominates. that's great. we'll take you over to the east bay though, and we're looking at a little build out of the altamont, to be expected and a slowing for 84 as most folks trickle down towards pleasanton. kari talked about pleasant hill,

good thursday morning. right now at 5:15. let's take a look at our high temperatures this afternoon. this will help warm you up and get you out of bed and moving. it's going to be another beautiful day. we're headed for the upper 60s and low 70s. take a look at your microclimate. we'll also see this weather continue into tomorrow, but we'll talk about more changes ahead in our forecast coming up.

>> we're looking at a nice drive. live look at oakland. head london knights out of oakland and down past the coliseum. no slowing just yet for part of the "nimitz." that's where i'll talk about possible slowing coming up. >> happy thursday to you. we get first time jobless claims data here in 15 minutes. new york city's new mayor eric adams told the ceos of big companies in his city it is time to bring your workers back to the office. adams says the health of the big apple's economy depends on it. right now only 28% of the people who have offices in manhattan actually go to their offices in manhattan. more pressure from the fed or for the fed to get moving on interest rates this morning. we expect the federal open markets committee will raise rate as much as half a percent as their next meeting next month, but editorial board at "the wall street journal" says raise rates right now, at least a quarter point today, another

quarter point in march and this is big. the department of education says it will forgive federal student loans for people who went to devry because they did not live up to students' expectations. the department of education have foregiven loans to for-profit schools that have closed down. student loan forgiveness came to a halt when was in charge and now it's back on track. a video website called just answer is where you can any question solved by an expert from something medical to why your dish washer is making a funny noise. i bring it up because the headquarters are in san francisco and the back end develop remembers almost entirely in ukraine. we're talked before about how ukraine is a great place to hire tech workers, at least under normal circumstances. now ceos here in america have to figure out how to protect their

ukraine, so it is -- you know, it's -- it's not as full invasion but they have some experience with violence in kyiv. >> a lot of people living on edge. >> for sure. >> thanks. switching gears here. a lot of people talking about wordle these days, and a lot of fans of the new game are wondering what's going on. >> i didn't really know how to say it, but do you know how to play it? >> oh, yeah, oh, yeah. >> i don't play it all the time. don't always have the time. >> a lot of people are playing it. a recent change in ownership really leads to some believers that the game is suddenly more difficult. to some the puzzles seem more complex but "the times" says the words in place and selected long before the ink ever dried on that deal. >> the only thing we've actually done is actually make it a little easier. we've removed a couple of words so far that we felt were a little obscure and that's going

to be a process for us. >> s.a.t. words? >> that's interesting. >> watch the full interview this morning that's coming up for you later on the "today" show which starts at 7:00. that's right after "today in the bay." >> it's a little challenge every day, a little brain tees. >> i'll try that. >> there you have it e. the word of the day, any sunshine? i guess it would be sunny for wordle. >> yeah, lots of it. yeah. we're going to continue to see the sunshine in the income. it's so dry and our temperatures are a little bit warmer. as you're headed out it's in the low 50s and we'll see the temperatures going from mild to nice and comfortable as we go into the rest of today with all that have sunshine. let's go to the south bay. we're going to see our temperature back to where we were yesterday. cupertino up to 69 degrees and upper 60s, even some low 70s in spots. we'll see a high of 71 in antioch and 68 in freements, and as you're looking at that seven-day forecast at the bottom

of the screen we'll have a few more days of temperatures like this with san matteo reaching 65 degrees, 65 also in the mission district and the north bay temperatures reaching 71 in santa rosa and 71 in ukiah. as we look into this forecast. we're looking ahead to see if there's any reason. see all of the yellow shadings of the day thapdcates dry weather and this is definitely a record of the mid-winter dry spell. 41 and counting, and we'll be seeing that drought monitor coming out later this morning as the sierra snowpack continues to shrink. we're at statewide average of 72% of normal as we had such a great start and it's really disheartening to see this now at only 72% of normal. we could see some changes but nothing really striking here. there could be a couple of moves at the end that could bring light snow at the sierras and not seeing any strong storms even as we head towards the end

of the month. we're definitely have cooldowns so if you're thinking of planting something, hold off because we could still have more freezes, and our temperatures for our inland areas will be in the low 70s for the next few days, and then we'll dip back into the 60s. take a look at next week. that's when we can start our morning with below freezing temperatures by next wednesday and highs only reaching into the upper 50s. mike. you have an important note for the south bay commute? >> i do. let's check the overall community. the north bay, everything moving slowly with green sensors. having seen that kick in just yet. altamont pass typical slowing out of the altamont pass itself. clear by livermore and pleasanton. pleasant and 17 and the note is we did learn about the extended closure and repair work up towards hamilton so you will have lanes closed up until 7:00 a.m. which could mean a drive coming off 85 right here heading

break-ins and thieves at least targeted eight homes. cierra johnson believes that this could be part of an international crime ring. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, marcus. two bay-area police departments are warning folks that their homes could be the target of a south american gang who arebergrizing homes throughout the state of california. now the atherton police department will hold a virtual meeting to talk about what they have uncovered and what folks can do to protect their home this. meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be virtual. at that time the agency will not only discuss their continued coordination with the fbi on the chilean gangs but also other partnerships like the coordination with the northern california regional intelligence center, known as the nc ri c on tracking of information of organized burglar rings as pell as a partnership with the san mateo police association and trying to use existing task forces for burglary suppression.

according to atherton police department, of the eight burglaries last month apd suspect six were committed by gang members operating out of the l.a. areas. of the 28 burglaries that occurred last year, six have will be linked to the chilean gang members so what can community members do to protect themselves? the atherton police department urging all home owners to keep your doors, windows and gates lock. keep your lights on and install light timers and leave the tv or radio on if you're going out of town. also, they want you to install exterior lighting. other advice. keep valuables well hidden and consider using a safe bolted to the floor or wall and also keep valuables out of your car and lock your car. also smart to install an alarm system and security cameras. now hillsboro's police captain also recently told nbc bay area that the same gangs are targeting that area so a lot to keep track of, again, that virtual meeting tonight takes

parade as well as the fireworks. it starts at 5:15 on saturday afternoon, and we're going to have some nice conditions for it. i don't know if the weather can get any better. they will have some low 60s and then it does cool down quickly into the evening. if your weekend plans take you to the beach. check out santa cruz. we're going to see temperatures in the mid to upper 60s for friday into saturday and just ahead. the temperature will be dropping on sunday so it will be much cooler and windy so we'll see only a high of 60 degrees. we do have a nice weekend ahead. still more changes and we will talk more about that in the drought monitor coming up. mike, you're starting with a look at the north bay. >> we're starting with our cameras at san rafael. looking at now in the north bay and also stick around for a look ahead towards the south bay in just a second. looking at the driving across the bridges. golden gate bridge, antioch bridges moving slowly an toward the east bay and contra costa county. a little slowing across the mid span of the bay bridge. little slowing out of altamont

>> the very latest on what the white house is saying. >> the latest is the u.s. ambassador to the united nations just told us she's spoken with the secretary of state and asked him to come to the united nations to say, and i'm going to quote here. the evidence on the ground is that russia is moving towards an imminent invasion. this is a crucial moment, close quote. blinken will divert from his scheduled trip to munich where he and the vice president were to meet with european leaders. the u.s. has consistently said russia's claims that it's withdrawing troops is false. in fact the u.s. says russia added about 7,000 more troops to the theater. russia insists that this is not true and sends out video like this of tanks on train cars. russia says it's moving those tanks away from the front line, but, of course, we don't know when this video was taken, where the video was taken or what direction that train is going. in the south of ukraine,

ukranian forces and russian separatists accuse each other of violating a cease-fire this morning. remember, ukraine faces a potential invasion and in the south in crimea, donbas, it's been invaded by what it called the little green men, soldiers in uniform with no patches, russians and this morning russians shelled a kindergarten building. no one was hurt and the white house warns anything real or imagined could set off a broader war. >> we near a window where we believe an attack could come at any time, and that would be preceded by what the russians use as a text. we've seen these it can takes used in the past. >> nato ministers met yesterday gathering together unified or as much as you can during a pandemic backing up the united states claim that russia is not withdrawing their troops. the defense secretary was there. video just not newsroom there of vice president kamala harris leaving for mining for the

them. >> you can see the whole story this morning on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. following "today in the bay." >> a massive bear causing major headaches for theme tahoe. that is 500-pouncer responsible for more than 150 calls to police and wildlife over the past several months. this is all because of break-ins in several of the homes near the south shore. sometimes people are still inside their homes. wildlife workers are really trying to trap the bear. if it is captured that bear is set to be euthanized because it's become too dependent on humans. one activist group is paying to relocate the animal and right now no sanctuary wants to take it in. >> so hard to feed the bears. >> mouse house taking on a whole new meaning. >> how does the idea of a mouse house sound? check this out. disney dipping into the real estate business so here's a new handout video. this is showing the concept for its first ever planned residential community. >> a lot more than a mouse house. >> is it? >> a new old mouse house.

continues as we get a klotter look at the bay area. the orange shading shows the severe drought and we're seen now 41 days without rain and as we take a look at our rainfall deficits and surplus, we're still at a surplus in some spots and then we've also seen the numbers really dip in spots like santa rosa and san jose and below our normal amount and when you take a look at oakland we still have a surplus of over 3 inches of rainfall and san francisco still in a surplus of about an inch and a half, so we'll see those numbers going down as we continue with not a drop of rain in the forecast in the near term. it's also been more than well normal, above normal as we take a look at the temperatures reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s for today. here's a look at what's going on across the region. la nina, typical conditions where the storm track is way up there and missing the bay area, but there are some storms out

there, and we may be starting to see the high pressure move out of the way and a change in the overall weather pattern, but the lows coming in have been mainly farther inland which tend to be dryer, and that's what we saw with the light snow that fell over the sierra just a couple of days ago and that may happen again as colder air comes in for early next week. temperatures are warm for today, tomorrow as well as saturday and then sundays when we get the next system coming in that's going to bring down the temperatures and before you plant anything, wait until we get at least through next week because it locks like we could have some more freezing temperatures by early wednesday morning into thursday with the highs only reaching into the upper 50s. my, you were tracking a slowdown on the bay bridge. >> a slowdown because of a slow roller. a car moving very slowly but still moving over towards the fremont exit over on the san francisco side. we see better movement now towards treasure island. comes up the in"dateline" and around the bend and you see it

there. you see the colleague, starting to recover and just orange sensors and improving as we move towards yellow and then green. green really at the limit approaching the bay bridge with no metering lights but they maybe turned on any second and with the slowdown more likely. no slowing across the north bay but a little for highway 37. the rest of the bay moves very nicely. a little blip for san jose typical. >> a north bay city was just given money from the state to help those struggling in the bay. napa was awarded more than $18 million to buy and convert a motel into 54 permanent homes for the unhoused as part of a project home key and initiative launched by governor newsom to help the state's homeless crisis. the state has award more than $1 billion as part of the program. >> 5:52 right now. protecting mother nature one chore at a time. >> still ahead.

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." turning to our climate in crisis. that daily chore of doing laundry can really take a toll on our environment. meteorologist vina arana has a look at how to help change the planet. >> reporter: it's laundry day. my favorite thing to do is go to bed with fresh clean sheets, and among the things that i use to make them smell nice are dryer sheets. but here has the problem with those single-use sheets. they are typically made of a polyester show the that's been covered in fabric sovereigntier and other chemicals that smell good. according to the environmental website called eco-watch the chemicals rub off on to a slimy layer that has the effect of making your clothes feel softer. those chemicals can irritate your skin. in the only that but we're throwing them away after each loved laundry and every time we

toss one we're increasing our carbon footprint and get this, they don't actually do anything to clean our clothes. >> hey, vianey, it's time for your climate hack. so what can you do to get rid of the static, a great alternate are the dryer wool balls. use them over and over again and some brands even claim to last for thousand of loads. plus, they are known to cut down on drying time as well and if you're worried about missing that great scent, a great option is to take up of your favorite essential oils for a couple of drops on the wool ball and one them with your dryer. here's the payoff. real simple reports using dryer balls with cut energy use by 25%. that's cutting down your carbon footprint, quite a bit, but each ball lasts for 1,000 load and you're doing one load, that's 1,000 less dryer sheets being thrown out. if everybody in the city of walnut creek used one dryer ball we'd avoid 70 million dryer sheets. >> i'm definitely going to do
