yesterday. hopefully you have plans and are able to enjoy more time outside. our south bay hiking forecast starts out chilly. then take a look at the trend later today at 3:00, we're at 70 degrees. there will be a few more clouds in the mix, but i think that will add to more colors in the sky for our sunrise and sunset. temperatures reach up to about 69 degrees in south san jose, 67 in orinda, and napa also reaching 67 degrees. we'll talk about a cooldown in our forecast coming up in a few minutes, marcus and laura. >> thank you so much, kari. 6:01 right now, happening today a controversial decision returns to the spotlight. a special meeting in oakland regarding school closures within the district is set to get under way. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live. i understand district officials could make changes to the original timeline for the closures of these schools. >> reporter: yes, good morning, laura. that's right. if you recall, last week the board made the decision to close a total of seven schools, close

and merge a total of seven schools and today we're expected to learn there are some changes coming to that plan. now, as it stands right now, five of those schools were expected to be closed by the end of next school year. that's the 2023 year, and at the end of the current school year community day school and la escuelita elementary school are expected to close. but according to documents for today's special meeting the board is expected to re-evaluate when the two schools close and could possibly shift the closure to next school year. today's meeting comes after weeks of discussions, walkouts and even some hunger strikes. nbc bay area has learned that later today two oakland students who are part of a larger group of students taking part in a hunger strike against the closures, they're expected to end their 18-day strike, as well as discuss the board's decision. so those students are expected to hold a press conference, a news conference to discuss their feelings about the board's decision as well as the 18-day

strike regarding those closures. so a lot to follow. we will keep you updated both on air and online. we're live, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you for the follow-up. the world will remember. that is the warning u.s. secretary of state aimed at russian president vladimir putin as threats of an invasion grow. now, the biden administration now shifting diplomatic talks into high gear to try to prevent a war. "today in the bay's" brie jackson is live on capitol hill this morning. later today the president is going to discuss the rising tensions with other world leaders. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus. white house officials say president biden plans to hold a call with major allies, including world leaders from france, germany, and nato. among other things, they'll discuss russia's military buildup and efforts to pursue diplomacy. president biden says there is evidence that russia is moving toward an imminent invasion.

the administration also accusing russia of staging a false flag operation to justify going in. russia's ambassador to the u.n. says the accusations are baseless. another warning sign, a rise in shelling along the front line. also on thursday, moscow expelled the second most senior diplomat from the u.s. embassy in russia. >> everything they are doing shows that they are prepared for an attack and that attack could happen any day. >> reporter: the u.s. urging russia to come to the negotiating table with hopes of preventing a war. meanwhile, secretary of state blinken plans to visit or meet with russia's foreign minister in europe next week, providing that russia does not invade ukraine. back to you. >> that sit-and-wait period, we all know whatever happens could ultimately affect us back here at home. brie jackson in washington, thank you. former vice president mike pence made a stop in the bay area, some wondering if it was a

presidential campaign stop or a regular keynote speech. san francisco republicans invited him to tour the campus. the theme from last night's speech, save america from a woke left. early in his speech pence took a swipe at democrats and bay area politics. >> this week in san francisco parents recalled three woke school board members who cared more about renaming schools than reopening them. >> before the speech, protesters who were against pence's visit guard outside the auditorium. competition nearing an end at the 2022 winter games. a live look at the olympic flame in beijing, where it's just after 10:00 p.m. every country hoping to add more wins to their medal counts in the final days. >> "today in the bay's" janelle wang is live for us this morning. i understand history has been made in a big win for an athlete

with ties to the bay area. >> not history, her-story, eileen gu from san francisco, she set a new record. this is her first olympics. it happened in the halfpipe. you saw it last night in prime time. she just basically succeed better than the rest of the competition, five points above the silver medalist, canada. she got more air than anyone and landed all her tricks. she wins gold after winning gold in freeski big air and silver in slopestyle. >> all i want to do is lay in a dark room, put my phone on airplane mode and sleep for days and days. i'm so happy. >> reporter: eileen gu competes for team china, her mother's homeland. not only history made, but her-story made, the first free skier male or female, to win

three medals in a single olympics. it's the men's turn tonight in prime time. david wise looks to defend his gold medal title in the halfpipe. he's won back-to-back golds. at age 31, he's the oldest competitor for team usa. 12 athletes qualified, four are americans. now, when he's not in the halfpipe, david wise is creating content on social media. this is his instagram page, in what they call a transition. he's making vlogs of his adventures. michaela shiffrin will talk about her struggles, what she has to deal with, the haters. it's sad and disappointing she has to deal with this. she's going to talk about that. she has inspirational words on the "today" show after "today in the bay." something we haven't been able to do at these olympics, visit the great wall of china because we're in a covid bubble. certainly disappointing, but i am grateful because the last time i was in beijing a few years back i was able to visit

time to come on back. 6:08 right now. to a follow-up in oakland, the city council is certifying the environmental impact report for the howard terminal ballpark. with the eir now approved, other votes and deals needed to build the new ballpark can move forward like the development agreement. the a's want to put the ballpark at howard terminal near jack london square. the plan also includes room for housing, offices and retail space. 6:09 this morning. let's take a live look outside at downtown san jose. nice and sparkling with all the lights. but in the background you can see the sun starting to ris meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast. starting out nice and cool. a little chilly this morning. should warm up later, yeah? >> yes, it's going to be a really nice day. we just have to make it through the next couple of hours with chilly temperatures. we've tipped into the mid-30s

right now in morgan hill. it's 40 in san jose and 36 degrees in dublin, with some low 40s in the north bay. after this cold start, santa rosa, you're going to see temperatures starting to trend upward, with a mix of sun and clouds today. and we're headed for the upper 60s here with a high temperature of 69 degrees in santa rosa. really comfortable day and we'll see more of this tomorrow. but then temperatures take a big dip heading into the end of the weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you're starting to see slowing. >> we called that out because we hadn't seen much really up until this point. altamont pass and highway 84, which is starting to clear up. maybe that was a burst of traffic. san jose, the first burst cleared up, so 101, easy flow of traffic. not a lot of slowing yet out of san martin and morgan hill. here is slowing for the contra costa county drive, all the way to the dublin interchange. it's under a half hour from highway 4 out of antioch, to a

late morning into the afternoon. we are going to see some changes ahead with cooler air moving our way. we'll talk about that in the forecast in a few minutes. >> and more traffic heading this way. this is our camera in san jose north 101, moving smoothly just north of 680. another incident popped up as i was checking another jurisdiction so we'll talk about what impact that might have and what we see with our morning build. >> good morning. very happy friday to you. stocks had a very rough thursday yesterday, as investors worried about war in europe, including the artillery attack on a kindergarten we think were by russian separatists. markets had the worst day of the year, the dow down 622 points. the nasdaq down nearly 3%. the national highway traffic safety administration says it's investigating reports of phantom braking in teslas. the cars' computers order a sudden slowdown or stop, having seen an obstacle that isn't really there.

the government says 416,000 model 3 and ys may be affected. elon musk posted and then deleted a picture of adolph hitler on twitter thursday. musk was comparing canadian prime minister justin trudeau, who has ordered the ticketing and towing of semi trucks in ottawa, to the german leader who supervised the murder of millions. the american jewish community has asked musk to apologize. this is actually the second time musk has posted a picture of hitler. it comes as the state of california has accused his company of rampant and breathtaking racism. california's fair employment and housing, the state equivalent of the eeoc, accuses tesla of separating black employees from white and that black employees were given the more physically demanding roles in the factory, while working with equipment scrawled with racist writing. tesla denies the charges. now, the key thing about this lawsuit, for those of us who

work in broadcast, we cannot verbalize the specifics of the lawsuit, the details, because of the language that's used. the lawsuit describing the experience some black employees allege go beyond just that word that you and i both can't say, there are words and phrases in that legal document that cannot be broadcast, it is that bad. again, tesla says it's not true. musk was in a new york city federal court on thursday facing off against the securities and exchange commission, which is accusing him of violating previous agreements not to tweet about the company's financials. this has nothing to do with the hitler tweet. musk, meanwhile, accuses the sec of harassing him. the judge in the case gave both sides two weeks to settle arguments, saying my call to action is for everyone to take a deep breath, put your reasonableness pants on and work this out. i've always thought about going to law school. now that i know there's a legal term called reasonableness

pants, i'm in. >> there you go. >> thanks, scott. a new whole foods market flagship store opening in san francisco. the company announced the roughly 65,000 square foot location will open on march 10th. it will be located at trinity place. the store will have a folk ois local offerings, featuring more than 3,700 bay area products. the design is said to be inspired by the city itself. amazon prior raising prices for new customers starting today. so this is a first increase for the service in four years. the annual fee is going from 1 $119 to $139 or $14.99 a month. current prime subscribers will see the same price hikes on march 26th. and tickets go on sale today for the highly anticipated latino music festival in los angeles. >> the festival will feature a legendry group from the bay area. ♪

let's take it back to the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. how is it looking out there? >> it's looking great. no parking on your way to work either. let's get a look at our beautiful start to our sunrise and you want to get those cameras ready. it's going to be a beautiful day. and, yeah, it's a little cool now, but we are going to have a warm-up. we're at 43 degrees in san jose and we'll see those temperatures headed for the upper 60s very quickly, by 1:00 this afternoon, reaching 68 degrees downtown, as well as seven hills. today and tomorrow pretty nice, then we're looking at a cooldown. we'll see a high of 64 in san mateo this afternoon. for san francisco, reaching 64 downtown and 67 in napa, as well as novato. we're dry and seeing just a few

clouds moving in. as we take a look at what's happening across the region, still quite a few storm systems out there in the pacific. what we've seen happen is they ki u and around the high pressure that's been blocking it. we may see some light snow for the sierra early next week. it looks like we miss out on the rain, but it will be much colder. take a look at next weekend. it does show that there could be the possibility of some rain coming our way. we've seen this before, especially that far out, where we see rain in the models, and then by the time it gets here, it dries up. we're really hoping this one pans out and we can get some rain for the month of february. as we take a look at temperatures, we do know that it's going to be significantly cooler from monday into tuesday, and then we're kind of coming out of that on wednesday into the rest of the week. there will be the drop in temperatures in spots like napa, where we may be freezing going into the middle of next week. just a heads-up about that. temperatures in the 60s and 70s today and tomorrow and you may have a long holiday weekend for

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live. critics say this move could put thousands of lives in danger? >> reporter: correct, and i'll explain about that in a moment. starting next week at&t will shut down 3g service on towers to make more room for the 5g spectrum. sprint, t-mobile, verizon will make a similar move sometime later in the year. there's only a limited amount of spectrum available for cellular signals. by getting rid of the 3g technology that many of us haven't seen or used since the days of the flip phone, we'll have more spectrum to improve

the 4g and 5g services. at&t tells us that they have been transitions customers off 3g and less than 1% of traffic runs on the old technology. but as the "today" show reports this morning, critics say this move could jeopardize thousands of lives because 2 million home and personal emergency systems still operate on 3g and 80% of customers are seniors. >> it's really across the board. it's alarm systems, security systems, fire alarm systems, medical alert systems, and connected cars with sort of on-star emergency crash detection. >> reporter: the alarm industry and others are petitioning the fcc to delay at&t's 3g shutdown until the end of the year. we've reached out to on-star, the mobile technology company found in gm cars that allows drivers to call for emergency service and alerts on-star when the neck has been in a crash.

on-star tells us they started upgrades last year from 3g to 4g service in vehicles model year 2015 and later. we've also reached out to the fcc who tells us that they are actively monitoring the phase-out of 3g technology and they're working to make sure people with older devices have a reasonable opportunity to make that transition in time. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you helped to keep them informed. thank you so much. 6:33 right now. san francisco police have now arrested a man they say is connected to several bank robberies in the city. police are investigating nine robberies that occurred between january 25th and february 5th. according to investigators, the suspect tried to rob another bank yesterday, but was arrested by plainclothes officers working a gun violence reduction operation. governor gavin newsom looks to transition the state into an

endemic and one local expert is saying don't take this as a sign that covid-19 is going anywhere. i had a good conversation with stanford infectious disease expert, dr. karan and we talked about concerns moving forward. >> when i worked on the massachusetts state response in 2020, when our test positivity rate was below 2%, closer to 1%, that's when things started to feel like they had settled down a little bit. when things reopened we didn't see a big uptick in cases thereafter for a while. right now in california, it was closer to 6%. we're still way above that and we're starting to reopen. the state still strongly recommends wearing good masks in indoor crowded settings, and they really are focusing on people who are fully vaccinated. but we know that fully vaccinated at this point really means you're also boosted. and we have a long way to go there. beyond that, we can't really be sure who is and isn't vaccinated. it could be that people who are vaccinated may still continue to be careful and wear masks and

people who are not vaccinated, and remember we're still seeing cases come into the hospital and still get sick from omicron, may be the ones more likely to go back to normal and not wear a mask and may get sick. >> i've heard people say if i get it, the virus, i'll be over it soon. you're saying absolutely not because we don't know the side effects. what we are seeing is 73% of people are immune to the omicron variant because they've had the virus. that could rise to 80% by next month. how likely is it in your opinion for us to see another damaging variant come into play here in the bay area or across the country? >> there's no guarantee the immunity from omicron is going to hold up, how long it will hold up for and what it means for future variants. you know, we had delta and people thought the same thing. we have widespread infections, things are going to go back to normal. many people have called for the end of the pandemic four or five times now. the reality is that we can't make these predictions.

area. temperatures are warming up once again, kari. >> yeah, it's going to be a nice weekend. we better take it in and enjoy it. and, also, for our weather heading out of town, let's go to the sierra as we take a look at our palisades tahoe forecast. we're looking at temperatures reaching into the upper 40s. take a look at the morning temperatures, around 20 degrees. we have quite a bit of snow, especially for the upper mountains and all of the trails and runs are open and ready for a busy weekend. here we're looking at nice weather if you plan to head to the beach. and just a heads-up that i think today and tomorrow will be the best days, because on sunday winds will pick up, temperatures will be dropping and most of our coastal areas will stay in the 50s. so it's going to be a little too cool for stepping in the water. take a look at san francisco. we have our chinese new year parade happening this weekend, and it's going to be really nice, but make sure you're wearing a couple of layers,

because it's going to be breezy and temperatures will be dropping. if you want some warmer weather, maybe you'll be going to sonoma valley, temperatures in the upper 60s, low 70s. we are going to continue to see sunshine throughout the weekend. and if your weekend plans take you to yosemite national park, high temperatures will reach into the low to mid-40s. morning temperatures in the 20s. but we are looking at great hiking weather, especially during the middle of those afternoons. mike, you're seeing some slowing for the bay bridge now. >> yeah, which doesn't sound unusual, but today before the three-day holiday friday, very light right now. we are seeing sensors change. you see the animated cars here heading in toward san francisco. the colors change from green to yellow and orange. back at the bay bridge they just activated metering lights if you're coming into the city. if you're coming in for the weekend, there's the return of the chinese new year parade, a different route than years before. market for a block or so, eventually ending up on kearney

lighter traffic. a crash did clear from somewhere close. i'll show you that, as well as the build that is happening a little more significantly in other parts of the bay. >> thank you very much. it is 6:42. breaking right now, police in canada are arresting protesters who have been camped out at the country's capital for the past three weeks. the majority of them are truckers, angry over the country's covid-19 restrictions. this is a live look in ottawa where it's unfolding. authorities first hesitated to move against many of the protesters, in part, for fear of violence. in recent weeks blockades shut down border crossings into the u.s., causing economic damage to both countries. moments ago, a new threat from russia over the ukraine crisis. >> scott mcgrew, the kremlin says they will participate in military movements involving strategic forces. >> those are intercontinental

ballistic missiles. that is a very loud rattle of the saber this morning. the official news agency says putin will take part in those drills. how about some good news? america and russia have agreed to meet next week. secretary of state blinken will meet with russian foreign minister sergey lavrov in europe. the exact date has not been determined. russia has consistently denied it plans to invade ukraine, but american intelligence satellites show an invasion-sized force on the border of ukraine. the new account is 190,000, up 60,000 from last week. president biden has made it clear american forces will not defend ukraine, the u.s. secretary of state did go to the united nations on thursday to warn that body of what seemed to be evidence of impending violence. >> i am here today not to start a war, but to prevent one. the information i've presented here is validated by what we've

seen unfolding in plain sight, before our eyes, for months. >> blinken seemed to be well aware the last time a u.s. secretary of state spoke to the u.n. the evidence turned out to be incorrect and led to a conflict that in retrospect most americans regretted. a federal judge has ruled that the new york state attorney general can question former president donald trump and two of his children, ivanka and donald trump jr. as the prosecutor pursues civil charges against the trumps for allegedly falsifying the value of various trump properties. eric trump on the far right has already testified and the prosecutor said he pleaded his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination during questioning. ivanka and donald trump have that right as well. as far as ukraine, we are in touch with our foreign desk and monitoring on the new threat. we're monitoring everything that's happening. we do know president biden will be speaking to european allies by phone a short time from now.

we'll be waiting for the readout on that. >> of course. and we continue our coverage this morning on the threat of that russian i vagz of ukraine because it could hit very close to home, even if you don't know anyone in the region. >> the conflict threatens the impact of prices of gas in the u.s. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live. this could have a big impact on people just trying to make it in the bay. >> reporter: right. take a look at these gas prices. they are already really, really high and that is true all around the bay area. i want to show you the average gas prices for san jose at $4.80 for a gallon of regular unleaded, $4.89 in san francisco. if russia invades ukraine it's possible the bay area could see gas prices inching close to $6 a gallon this summer. >> it's nearly guaranteed that a ukraine invasion, combined with other seasonal factors, will

boost california and the bay area to over $5 a gallon. we could see prices go halfway to $6 a gallon by the time memorial day rolls around if ukraine -- if russia does invade ukraine. >> reporter: now, both scott mcgrew and brie jackson have reported that the u.s. is threatening economic sanctions against russia if it does invade ukraine, but russia could respond by cutting how much oil it exports and that could affect supply and demand. a petroleum analyst says on top of that, terrorist attacks and unrest in libya, gas-producing companies are contributing to higher prices, along with pandemic supply issues that are ongoing. the analyst says we can expect prices to remain high at least through the summer, invasion or not. so is there any relief in sight for the little guy, those of us who have to pump our own gas? in washington there's talk about suspending the federal gas tax which amounts to about $18 per

one of the workers decided to make the trip to tennessee to return her to her family. >> i hope she wanted to be reunited with her owner. >> you know i left for a reason, right? >> now you're shipping me to tennessee. >> here we go again. >> california is a pretty good place. bay area is going to be a warm one. >> yeah, and you really can't beat this weather. take a look at our start this morning on this friday. this beautiful sunrise that we have over walnut creek. we're going to start out -- yes, it is cool, but then take a look at the trend. we're at 43 in walnut creek. we see a mix of sun and clouds that's going to add more color to the sky. we're also going to see our temperatures headed for the upper 60s. and let's go to the south bay. take a look at these temperatures for later today, reaching 67 in los gatos and 68 in gilroy. we're looking at upper 60s for much of the east bay with oakland reaching into the mid-60s. the seven-day forecast is already up. you can see the drop in

temperatures that's coming our way. and we're going to enjoy this for a little while longer, with a high of 67 in palo alto, san francisco reaching into the mid-60s, and our north bay temperatures also in the upper 60s. 66 today in clear lake. so it's still dry, we see a few more clouds moving in. we can see all of the storms still well out there in the pacific. but they're kind of diving up and around and there will be another chance, with colder temperatures, and light sierra snow next week. toward the end of the month, there may be a chance of rain. we have seen this before in the computer models, but then as it gets closer it dries up. so we're not going to hinge any bets as of right now, but we're still watching that and holding out that hope that we could see things really turn around and give us some rain. we do know that it's going to be cold, especially for the middle of next week. take a look at gilroy in our ten-day forecast. on tuesday the high temperature

will only reach 54 degrees. now, that only lasts for a little while because our temperatures head right back up. but i am still concerned about the potential that we could have some more freezing temperatures during the early-morning hours next week. as we take a look at the seven-day forecast for the inland areas, it will be in the upper 60s and upper 50s for the middle of next week. mike, the commute is still looking a little non standard right now. >> yeah, it's light even for a friday because it is a pre-holiday friday for many folks getting off for presidents' day. some kids get the whole week off. even though the metering lights have been on since 6:25, the toll plaza does not show the backup. we see highway 4, a crash right near maze that has cleared. a little build, unusual through hayward, mountain view and

hunger strike to protest the closures will attend tonight's meeting. they'll hold a news conference to talk about possibly ending their strike. to a follow-up in oakland, city council is certifying the environmental impact report for the howard terminal ballpark. with the eir now approved, other votes and deals needed for the ballpark to be built can move forward. the a's want to put the ballpark near jack london square. the $12 billion plan includes room for housing, offices and retail space. >> employees at west field valley fair mall are set to protest over new parking fees being imposed on them. valley fair announced on new parking program that it says will deter non-shoppers from parking in their lots. it gives customers two free hours of parking and charges $1 per hour after that. but it also charges employees $3 a day or $40 for the month. it took effect last week. employees are set to protest this sunday, demanding free parking. in a statement, westfield valley
