with you hoda kotb. great to be here. >> we're excited you are here. we're going is start with the extreme weather across much of the country. tornados touching down in alabama overnight, turning over trucks and causing substantial damage. just one part of that massive system that seems to contain every weather condition possible. >> in the mid west, crews are cleaning up after snow and ice caused dangerous driving conditions leading to this massive pile up and more than 30-mile backup. >> here on the east coast, the major concern this morning, heavy winds up to 70 miles per hour. we've got it all covered, including al's forecast. let's start with nbc's maura barrett outside of chicago for us.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning hoda. to put it into perspective, yesterday morning it was 40 degrees here. surprisingly warm for the mid west in february. but then temperatures dropped dramatically, the weather moved in and we're left with piles of snow like this overnight. i'm about 5'7", so that is the kind of snow that we're talking here. and temperatures are in the single digits so the snow is not going anywhere any time soon. people across the country waking up to a similar situation. this morning in dallas to maine, millions under a severe weather advisory. moving east, slamming the south with strong winds and flooding. in alabama, tornados touching down. toppling trees on to homes. even splitting a mobile home in half. tearing down stadium signs. and crushing gas station canopies. across the region, wind speeds

reaching up to 60 miles per hour, overturning semis and knocking out power to 70,000 people. and a downpour in tennessee dropping up to three inches. further north in buffalo, new york, ice jams flooding, as melted snow and new rainfall raise water levels. in the meantime in the mid west, heavy snow leading to hazardous travel. in illinois, overnight crews cleaning up the wreckage. following a 30 mile stretch pile up involving over a hundred peeks that ultimately shut down the interstate. >> everybody needs to get out of the way because there is going to be more cars coming. >> reporter: in parts of the region up to five inches of snow prompting school closures. temperatures also dipping down in indiana, as low visibility and snow-covered street prove to be a nightmare. >> because it is your first year with a four wheel drive. it doesn't do any good on ice. >> reporter: snowfall reaching up to 7 inches in missouri breaking the state's daily record. here in illinois, the interstate is not expected to open back up for commuters until midday today. >> thank you so much. for more on the storm what

imminent russian invasion of ukraine. the whitehouse while still pushing diplomacy now saying in the wake of artillery strikes, moscow appears to be setting the stage for an attack. richard engel joins frustrate ukraine. good morning. >> good morning, hoda. president biden will hold yet another call with major u.s. allies as the kremlin says that starting tomorrow, vladimir putin will personally oversee russian nuclear readiness drills, firing cruise missiles and intercontinental ballistic mills missiles without nuclear war heads. russia holds the exercises every year but this year they have been moved up. as russian forces remain in attack position around ukraine with troops to the north and east and its warships in the south conducting live fire drills in new images russia released this morning, president

biden warnings ms. cow could attack within days russia says it has no intention to attack but moscow issued what sounded like an ultimateem, writing unless the kremlin security concerns are addressed and barring ukraine from ever joining alliance, russia may take what it vaguely describes as a military technical response moscow seemed to drive the point home by expelling the second most senior diplomat at the u.s. embassy in russia. now the u.s., nato allies and ukraine all accuse russia of fishing for a approve vegas, or looking to create one that would give russia an excuse to launch an attack. and that spark to start a larger war come here. russian backed separatists have launched dozens of mortars and artillery over the last dozens of hours landings on houses, a kindergarten and in fields, so far without causing fatalities the separatists claims they are

business practices a judge now ordering the former president and two of his adult children to answer questions under oath from new york's attorney general nbc's senior washington correspondent hallie jackson has the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the judge's decision means the trump, the former president, ivanka and donald trump jr. will have to sit for a deposition in the next three weeks, unless they are able to successfully aappeal in a decision that raises the stakes in multiple investigations into his company. a big blow this morning for former president trump on the legal front with a judge ordering him and two of his children, don jr. and ivanka to answer questions under oath from the new york attorney general. it is part of her on going civil investigation into the trump organization's business practices. the new york ag letitia james praising the judge's decision, saying justice prevailed, adding no one is above the law.

safely at its destination. now to a cautionary tale on the dangerous of social media. a teenager's influencer family is now speaking out. one of the daughter's followers arrived at their door armed with a gun. >> nbc national correspondent gabe gutierrez joins us with more. >> authorities say that young man was an obsessive stalker who not only showed up at the house with a gun but used it and the influencers dad, a retired cop took action with deadly consequences. ava is a growing social media star the 15 year old has more than 1.2 million followers on tiktok. but last summer her family says one of those followers showed up at the family's florida home with a gun >> so he attempted to breech the door with, i presume a shotgun. >> reporter: her father rob a retired police lieutenant sprang into action. >> at that point i took action

and neutralized the threat. >> the alleged gunman was an obsessed fan who sent ava hundreds of messages on her social media accounts. ava's parents say at one point they allowed the daughter to sell the 18 year old two selfies she had already posted online. but justin then started asking ava for explicit photos. >> had opportunity to actual text this person and say hey, she's a minor and you need to not contact her anymore and weed notified the authority. >> reporter: the day of the shallow shooting authorities telling local media a man was shot and killed while attempting a home invasion. no one was arrested at a time. overnight the police report called the case an ongoing investigation. after the incident the family moved and ava started home schooling.
