tonight athletes pushed through punishing conditions on the mountain. wind and below zero temps complicating the competition as the olympics wind down. >> in that covid bubble for the past two weeks, not allowed to explore beijing. instead, within the bubble stories have come to life. let's bring in nbc's janelle wang. where you are in china, it's minus five degrees. you, my friends, need a blanket and a hot chocolate. >> reporter: how about a hot tub and a hot tottie? that sounds really good. this is the highest mountain cluster at these olympic games and wow, i have to tell you the weather was gnarly out here today. i'm using skier lingo. minus five degrees with a wind chill, it's minus 25 with gusty

winds 40 miles per hour. one of the coldest days of these olympic games. the free skiers had to change their strategy in the halfpipe. fortunately delivered on his first of three runs. the winds gave him trouble with the last two run ares. but the last run landed him solidly in second place and securing silver. three olympics now, three medals for david weisz who's made the podium at every olympics since sochi. two golds and a silver today. and his teammate securing third place for the rest of the competition. he won silver in pyeongchang and walked away with bronze in beijing. >> second olympic medal. that's two for two, baby. i'm excited. i'm grateful to be here. >> i had so much i plan on doing here. i have a deep bag of tricks i

didn't even good etto crack into today because of the wind. so, i at least got to do one more season. it's like a chef who cooked a really good meal and doesn't get to share it with anybody. i have all this stuff i want to show people. >> we could see more of david wise. team u.s.a. athletes cheering him on. and a father of two holding a cutout of wife and kids. his family, they're back at home in reno at a watch party at the renaissance hotel. it was a fundrazor for one of the only nonprofit ski resorts to give them an opportunity to try the expensive sport of skiing. that's where david wise first learned how to ski. the event raised nearly $50,000. and a touching moment today. a horrifying crash in the windy and brutal conditions, landing on his head and shoulders.

david wise immediately ran up the halfpipe to check on his friend, who laid there for a few minutes. thankfully, blunk was able to get down the halfpipe. alpine skiing, the mixed team event. mikaela shiffrin was supposed to compete, her sixth and final event but it was too windy. now we don't know if the event is going to lapin because the loimpic games end sunday. and the final day of the two-women bobsled. taylor and hoffman are in third place. and hoffman won silver in the mono pod laz week. and announced as the flag bearer for closing ceremony. as you know she was supposed to do the opening ceremony and came down with covid. a funny story about elana miles.

oakland unified special meeting was to delay part of the recently approved plan to close and merge schools. basically to push off the plan until next year. it didn't pass. two directors voting yes. three no and one abstention. this is what happened when the votes came in. >> motion does not agree to -- amendment failed. >> thank you for that -- >> y'all put on this show tonight. you thing this is going to work? this isn't going to stop anything. this is the start of it. i'm so einsulted you would make the community sit here for over two hours knowing you weren't going to do a darn thing to change the situation. >> you may be wondering about this. the two hunger strikers who haven't eent in 18 days said today that they would end the strike no matter what the vote was. but dozens of other people,

convinced he's made the decision, we have reason to believe. >> reporter: the president says diplomacy is still on the table. i spoke with a fellow at stanford and the fellow u.s. ambassador to ukraine. >> i think they've got the framework about right as they defined an off ramp of diplomacy if moscow wants to get out of the cries without going to war. but they've worked very closely with allies to come up with very painful costs should the russians go in. >> he said the invasion happened, the sanctions imposed would be swift. >> would prevent russian banks from really dealing outside of russia. there are sanctions that would prevent the export to russia of semiconductors and other high-tech goods which are important, not just for the export goods but for the civilian economy. >> reporter: some could he could

retaliate by shutting down oil and gas exports. >> with the economy already nervous, there's really a possibility that people will panic in the gas market, gasoline market and also the natural gas market and both of those prices will go up substantially. >> reporter: and that could come just days after an invasion. ian cull, nbc bay area news. a shooting in san francisco. the video is from citizen app. that gunfire erupting in the mission district at 23rd street in san jose avenue before 8:00 p.m. it's unclear what led up to the shooting. paramedics did rush the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. a northern california school district is at risk of losing liability insurance for defying the state mask mandate.

california still requires masks to be worn indoors at schools. but last week the roseville school district voted to drop that mandate. they could lose the covid disaster funding and be fined. a spokesperson for the district said a response would be issued this weekend. well, moving you forward, governor newsom says he'll make an announcement near the end of this month. a specific date will be given when those masks can come off. chinatown alive with excitement. the chinese new year parade is happening after a pandemic pause. and huge crowds are expected. how organizers and police are preparing. >> reporter: bleacher seats along the route sold out quickly according to organizers who say

enthusiasm is high as a you welcome back the chinese new year parade. >> it brings back tourism to chinatown who has been hit hard. >> reporter: the new year's parade is usually a huge draw as hundreds of thousands swarm to chinatown to celebrate. there will be dozens of extra uniformed officers and security volunteers from diverse backgrounds this year. >> we will have marshall order with us and people trained thank will be able to step into action if anything happens. >> reporter: the diversity a sign of solidarity and a lunar new year celebration a chance to show that in a proud and public way. >> we're super excited about that coming out. we're here to let people know we're here.

okay. do you ever read online reviews for doctors, restaurants? be careful because they can be bought. >> they rolled out programs to help prevent that but there's still plenty of fake reviews out there. chris. >> our team continues to read lots of online reviews. not for us. for you and some of what we've found is genuinely unbelievable. the nation's divided. politics, taxes, sports, tattoos. but a november survey shows we agree on one thing, an online reviews. a chart topping 98% of us read online reviews. but only half say we trust them as much as a personal recommendation.

yelp created a selected group of reviewers it calls a trusted voice. they get a badge that appears on their post and hosted share the slogan. real people, real reviews. that's a real yelp elite with a real disguise and you'll understand why in a second. he reviewed a peninsula mover. gave them five stars for driving long hours to help him. but has he ever actually used the mover? >> he told us a middleman wrote oo fake review and paid him 30 bucks to post it word for word as his own. >> well, it was covid and i'm a little behind on a couple of my payments. >> it makes me angry of what's going on. >> reporter: from her spare bedroom kb cay dean has launched a crusade and a youtube channel. spending countless hours outing reviewers she feels are fishy.

after she started questioning patient testimonials about one of her own doctors. cay says pg is not the only yelp elite posting fakes. pointed us to facebook groups and other places where cash for are review offers appear daily. >> this is a public group. >> reporter: when our team messaged people in the group, one former yelp elite said he was part of an invitation only online chat that included a few thousand yelp elite members paid 25 to 30 bucks per fake review. instagram said we don't allow people to post or solicit fake or misleading reviews. facebook told us it removes content that facilitates fake reviews. we flagged several groups and pages for them. facebook and instagram removed each one for violating the policy.

>> they change names and i don't see that there's any proactive efforts by facebook to deal with it. >> reporter: next we asked yelp about its elites. some being paid to post fake reviews. yelp told us it strictly prohibits offer aing payment for eare views. and if we catch a yelp user writing or removing reviews for compensation, we'll remove their reviews and close their accounts. they said it's very rare for them to leave compensated reviews. it did say it has closed accounts that cay flagged. cay says it's not enough and pg agrees. yelp needs better elite enforcement. >> i think they could do better. vetting out reviews that are fake, verses doctored or even like mine. where they spoof a check in. >> reporter: still elite.

he says he voluntarily deleted some reviews, expressed remorse. afterall, his fake mover review remained up for six months. >> i feel bad being an elite and betraying the community i help build. >> don't trust the reviews of a complete stranger you've never met and they may not be a real person at all. >> reporter: if you spot a review you believe is fake, go to report fraud.ftc.gov. we just made a video showing you how. we've included what we learned and expert advice to weigh whether to trust a review. we're going to run it on tv next week too. >> thank you very much. here's jeff ranieri with us and my review is an authentic review, five stars all the time. reliable. >> right back at the both of you.
