the situation in ukraine, including a chance to diffuse a possible invasion. french president macron has reportedly reached an agreement with vladimir putin focused on creating a cease-fire in ukraine's eastern donbas region. it could include a meeting between russia, ukraine, france and germany. russian troops are running drills in belarus. russia and belarus say the violence in the donbas region is why they're not budging. it's controlled by pro-russian rebels. russia says the violence is concerning, but the u.s. and ukraine accuse the country of using it as an excuse to invade and the drills are meant to keep russian troops close. >> in san francisco, ukrainians and their supporters rallied today. it was to raise awareness, express support and call for sanctions on russia. this is the second time demonstrators have held the

demonstration in recent months. this time the stakes are much higher. >> we want more americans to know and care about this. this is not just happening far away, it's happening in europe and this affects every country in the world, which it must be stopped because if he's not stopped now, there's no telling where this goes. >> leaders of the rally also want a path for ukraine to join nato, something putin is against. the situation in europe is heavy on the minds of people attending services this morning. >> christie smith continues our coverage. >> reporter: at st. michael ukrainian church in san francisco, people gathered and sprayed sunday morning, many following developments suggesting russia is closer to an invasion of ukraine. >> my father and mother and all my family is in kyiv. >> reporter: many have family and friends there and are unsure

lifetime in the sport and i'm proud of that. i'm proud of every moment. >> reporter: a tear-stained two weeks in figure skating overshadowed by a doping scandal ended on a lighter note with gold medalist nathan chen flipping out in an exhibition gala and vincent zhou stepping back onto olympic ice after pandemic protocols forced him out of competition. another covid comeback for elana meyers taylor, finally a flag-bearer after missing the open ceremony for a cinematic close to her historic career. as team usa says good-bye to beijing. now, you won't see vincent zhou at the closing ceremony, unfortunately. he's still under close contact protocol here. but at least he got to skate on olympic ice once more. and you can see all of the fireworks, fanfare, the big celebration coming up a little

in place or lift it. we've made it easier for you to find answers to some of your biggest questions about the pandemic. go to nbcbayarea.com, click the covid faq link on our trending bar. san francisco police are investigating the death of a teen girl they're calling suspicious. she was found just after 6:30 friday morning and police were called in to help with a possible overdose. paramedics tried to save the girl but she did die at the scene. her death was declared suspicious and homicide detectives were brought in to lead the investigation. the girl hasn't been identified at this point and police have not made any arrests. san francisco mayor london breed opened up about the city's recent school board recall on "meet the press" this morning. voters overwhelmingly voted to oust three school board members last week who pursued progressive policies like renaming schools during the pandemic. political experts say the story is making national headlines as an example that even liberal voters are sick of so-called

woke politics. mayor breed pushed back a bit against that idea this morning, saying the vote was more about common sense and putting education first. >> my take is that it was really about the frustration of the board of education doing their fundamental job, and that is to make sure that our children are getting educated, that they get back into the classroom, and that did not occur. they were focusing on other things that were clearly a distraction. >> she did go on to say that renaming schools and changing administrations policies are important, but they should have taken a back seat to covid education plans. she wants the seats filled by people who will focus on priorities like learning loss, mental health challenges and the budget deficit. chuck todd also brought up san francisco's next high-profile recall with district attorney chesa boudin, who would be out of a job. he faced sharp criticism for his handling of crimes and repeat o fenders. todd pointed out he came out

against the school board members. mayor breed says regardless of the recall she wants to make sure she can still work with the d.a.'s office. >> i haven't made a decision one way or another about the recall. i'm still debating on whether or not i will, but ultimately what i want to be able to do is make sure that the decision i make is not an impediment to my ability to work with the district attorney and keeping san franciscans safe. >> the recall election is june 22nd. heads-up, it's popular way to get around the south bay, but new video shows how one wrong move could put your life at risk. >> and speaking of the south bay, today only low 60s, and get ready for highs in the 40s and 50s and snow, potentially, on our bay area mountaintops. big change in the forecast coming up.

about friday night. this is video from citizen app. the gunfire erupted in the mission at 23rd street and san jose avenue just before 8:00 that night. it's unclear what led up to it, but one man was found shot inside a car. he was rushed to a hospital, sfpd says despite trying to save him, the man did die. police are now investigating the shooting as a homicide. so far, no arrests have been made. too close for comfort. vta is sharing what you might call an eye-opening video on tiktok reminding people to be aware as trains come by. look at this. ♪ oh no oh no ♪ ♪ oh no no no no no ♪ >> they play a light song, nothing bad happens here. this is video taken on board trains this past year. you can see people and bicyclist ducking and diving. vta says no one was hurt in these incidents. the whole point is the agency posted the video to remind

people to please pay attention around the tracks. after waiting two years to celebrate, the chinese new year festival is winding down. organizers are wrapping up the final day. they hadn't put together a festival since 2020, shortly before the pandemic began. we did speak to some visitors who came to san francisco without knowing the festival was actually happening, but said they had a great time at last night's parade. >> it was a pretty good one. i think we start at 5:00 and i think i fell asleep at like 11:00 or something and it was still boom, boom, boom. >> sounds like a great night. next year will be the year of the rabbit. >> taking you outside for a live look at the beautiful -- i consider it always beautiful golden gate bridge. cooler weather, much cooler weather coming to the bay area. >> i couldn't help it when you said we're going to be looking at highs in the 40s and 50s, rob. >> it's still winter and i know this weekend it didn't feel like

it. yesterday we had a lot of 70s around the bay area. the cooling underway today. most locations down a good 10 or 15 degrees cooler. san jose one of the spots cooling down into the 60s and the wind picking up, northwest at about 12 miles per hour. overcast skies. quite a bit cooler in san francisco. chinese new year parade last night had mid-60s, now it's 53 and the west wind up to 17 miles per hour. tomorrow morning we may see patchy fog across the bay. chil into morgan hill waking up to some upper 30s for tomorrow morning. and you'll be able to keep a jacket all day long. we don't have 60s or 70s in the forecast. the warmest places, upper 50s around san jose. you see a high of about 57 degrees, staying in the mid-50s from san francisco to oakland. bigger changes coming our way later tomorrow, starting off in the north bay after sundown, you see the timestamp in the upper right-hand portion of the

screen. by 7:00, beginning to see a few scattered showers dropping in from the north as a very cold air mass starts to settle in across the west coast. that's going to drive snow levels down to as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet at times on tuesday. now, the problem is, given how cold the air is, it doesn't have a lot of moisture to work with. by 11:00 on monday we're seeing scattered showers approaching the coast, a few more as we head into the morning and then by tuesday 9:00 a.m. we're seeing snow showers near mount hamilton. we're still in scattered showers mode. this is not going to produce widespread heavy rain, unfortunately. right there in the higher peaks south of livermore, could see a little bit of snow and then things settle down as we head into tuesday night. rain totals don't look so good, probably higher around the coast and the mountains. most of the bay area seeing less than a quarter of an inch or tenth of an inch of rain.

now, for the sierra, the better news, could see more than a foot of snow. that is the most snow we've seen in almost six weeks, so that is good news for the sierra. look at the temperature change. tuesday, highs in the bay area, upper 40s to low 50s and morning temperatures in the low 30s across the valleys. wednesday morning and thursday morning we could actually see lows in the upper 20s. so there you go. there's a lot on that tuesday frame right there. you can see the chance of hail with some showers, too, snow levels between 2,000 to 3,000 feet. as the skies clear, look at the bottom of the screen. low temperatures could lead to some freeze warnings for the interior valley, so we have to watch that as the skies clear. the cold air is going to be sticking around a while, trending a little warmer as we head toward next weekend. a winter blast temperature-wise and tuesday could see all kinds of precipitation around the bay area. >> i'm looking at next sunday,

homeys. 70% of white people in america don't have people of color for friends. so the way the media represents our black and brown youth is key to how they get to move through society. so we talk to people about that and inform them culture is something more than they see. steph curry is working out with his headphones in. that looks familiar with me. seeing hip hop in these spaces means that i can be in these spaces, too. it's everything. representation matters. just as much as it matters to see michelle obama or kamala harris. it matters to see hip hop in these big spaces elevated, too. black history month is for everybody, because right now we're not elevating all histories equally. that's why people need to have a critical lens into different cultures and what different people have been through. i think black history month is really beautiful for that. i've got big shoes to fill. i'm standing on the shoulders of idab. wells and carmichael and

a historic hotel in san francisco is getting ready to reopen, but it is going to have a new name. >> for 94 years this hotel was known as the sir francis drake, but when the hotel reopens this spring it will be called the beacon grand. this is the latest effort in the bay area to replace the name of the english explorer who participated in slave trading in the 1500s. last year sir francis drake high school changed its name. >> the beefeater in front, tom sweeney, i hope he's somehow a beefeater still. >> i had to look up what

beefeater is. i'm like, why do they call him beefeater? did you know? because back then they were permitted to eat as much beef as they wanted from the king's table. i had no clue. >> folks, it's not just informative, it's educational here at nbc bay area. for a little more education on the forecast, let's check in with rob right now. >> those outfits are appropriate. we've got some 30s and 40s tomorrow morning. chilly in some of the valleys. could see patchy fog to start and then, unlike the way the weekend started where we had 70s, the temperatures hour by hour tomorrow not warming up much. we'll begin to see showers approaching the north bay by 3:00 and highs tomorrow only in the mid-50s and even colder by tuesday. you'll notice we've got sunshine for tomorrow morning around sunrise into the afternoon. the first wave of a few scattered showers coming down the coast as we get into monday night. and tuesday, that's the big change-up in the forecast.

scattered showers, a little sun, and we could see some hail or ice pellets, heavier showers. it's been a while since we've had a little bit of everything in the forecast. we've got it for you on tuesday. highs upper 40s to low 50s and skies will clear. notice the bottom of the screen, morning temperatures, cold enough where we could get some freeze warnings up for the valleys. wind sheltered valleys could see 20s and 30s. as we get to friday the chilly morning temperatures continue and the next chance of finding rain could be for areas around northwestern sonoma county next weekend beyond tuesday. the seven-day forecast doesn't offer us any more rain chances just yet. we hope by the end of next weekend the showers to the north can drop farther south. this is a big reversal, some places almost 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the high temperatures yesterday. tuesday, again, winter coats,

umbrellas and maybe some snow shovels for some areas toward the sierra. >> we went from so much water, it was a fantastic start. give me an idea of what tuesday is going to look like. are we going to have four seasons in one day? >> it will seem that way. the air is really dry, so it's not going to be a big rain totals producer, but the precipitation could be interesting. we've been looking atin right n because that storm is dropping south. they're getting ice pellets, isolated thunder, snow down to 2,000 feet and a mix of sun. that's a sneak preview of what i think is headed our way late tomorrow into tuesday. and then the temperatures really cold, patchy frost or some ice. >> an important reminder that we are still in the middle of winter. i wish we could get more rain.
