♪♪ good morning. it is saturday, february 26th. 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside. the sun shining over the golden gate bridge. thank you so much for starting your final weekend of the month with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a quick look at our forecast. >> good morning, kira. it is chilly out there but not as cold as we have seen this week. we had record lows, a freeze warning was allowed to evenings pier. walnut creek is about 37 degrees. skies are clear but we will see an increase in cloud cover into

this afternoon. by about 10:00 a.m., 49 degrees. even though we are starting in the 30s, topping out in the upper 50s and also low 60s into the afternoon for walnut creek. if you are in the south bay shall right now it is about 38 degrees in san jose. a mix of sun and clouds till about 10:00 a.m. notice the increase in cloud cover around noon. temperatures will be in the mid 60s and we will be warming up a little bit heading into the week ahead. i will talk more about the changes and the chance of rain as well coming up in my full forecast. kira. we begin with the ever-intensifying russia/ukraine conflict. ukrainian forces in a fierce exchange with russian soldiers overnight, this video showing heavy fighting near the kyiv zoo. according to the ukrainian minister of health nearly 200 people are dead. that includes three children. an estimated 1,100 people were

wounded and that includes 33 children. president volodymyr zelenskyy tweeted this video, online rumors that he told the army to stop fighting. he's instead asking people to return to ukraine and defend their country. the united states meanwhile urging the president to evacuate the capital of kyiv. a senior u.s. intelligence official says the ukrainian president flatly turned down that request, saying, quote, "the fight is here, i need ammunition, not a ride." it is 5:00 p.m. saturday in kyiv right now. every hour matters amid the fighting and the fear. with so much uncertainty, seeking the truth of this invasion is critical. america's response also crucial. the u.s. embassy in kyiv issued an urgent message for u.s. citizens there. the security situation throughout ukraine remains highly volatile and conditions may deteriorate without warning. u.s. citizens should remain

vigilant and know the location of your closest shelter or protected space. just in this morning, the u.s. has sent additional military assistance to ukraine. secretary antony blinken released this statement saying, quote, "today as ukraine fights with courage and pride against russia's brutal and unprovoked assault, i have authorized pursuant to a delegation by the president an unprecedented third presidential draw down of up to $350 million for immediate support to ukraine's defense, end quote. the u.s. has been sending money to ukraine over the past year. the total now stands at more than $1 billion. from ukraine to here in the bay area you can see here san francisco city hall, illuminated last night in blue and yellow, the colors of the ukrainian flag, a show of solidarity and support. in washington, alice barr, nbc news. this is new video of people escaping airstrikes. they're underground. this video was sent to our jodi hernandez from a family friend in ukraine. you can see it was taken in an underground bomb shelter near the black sea. that's about a seven-hour drive from kyiv. you can see how crowded it is in there. jodie's friend told her it was packed, hot and damp. russia's invasion could displace as many as 5 million people, and some of those potential refugees might be coming here to the bay area. the international rescue committee is estimating that more than 100,000 people so far have been displaced during russia's invasion. men, 18 to 60, as alice barr just mentioned, have to stay behind and fight. women and children are heading for the borders. >> in san francisco we have two

churches, two ukrainian churches and the event centers, music halls where we are ready to provide food, provide some shelter for those refugees who were able to come to san francisco. >> it may take a while for people to get here though. a person has to declare themselves a refugee at the border. silicon valley is involved in stopping the invasion. meta, the parent company of facebook and instagram, wants to put a dent in russia's revenue. its head of security policy says russian state media is now banned from running ads or monetizing content. meta says it doesn't want russian state media to make any money on its platform. the changes are being implemented as of last night. meta has also been identifying state-run media with labels on videos and other posts. there have been rallies across the u.s. and the world

protesting russia's actions. here is a live look at the white house where people protested yesterday, saying the biden administration isn't doing enough. people are calling on the president to do more to help the people of ukraine. back here locally and happening today, people are encouraged to gather at san francisco's ferry building at noon. organizers say it is intended to be peaceful and a way to show solidarity and support for the people of ukraine. many bay area lawmakers are on key committees relating to policy involving ukraine and russia. russian military is not prevailing in the way i think a lot of people thought they would. >> reporter: he also believes that sanctions will be effective. >> yes. from my understanding, having watched this and been briefed on it, i think it is very proportionate and it is -- there's still more to come if he doesn't back off. >> reporter: ian cull, "today in the bay." as the battle rages in ukraine, work continues uninterrupted here at the ukrainian consulate in san francisco. it is the only ukrainian diplomatic outpost on the entire west coast. we spoke to the consul general who says the consulate is receiving a lot of calls from people who want to help and actually go to ukraine to fight. >> so all of the people who want to go to ukraine and help by fighting for -- by providing any other help, they just have to address the consulate by e-mailing or calling and we will direct them to procedures. the only thing, they will have to fly there and there is no direct flight obviously right now. so they will probably have to

disappearance of alexis gabe. the 23 year old vanished in late january in contra costa county. for days police and volunteers searched with no luck, but yesterday the class kids foundation arrived to help train and organize volunteers for a new search. more than 70 people showed up at the contra costa county fair grounds. >> i'm overwhelmed with all of the support. these guys are like family now. they're looking for alexis like she's their own. >> the class kids foundation will also help mapping out search areas. organizers will be there throughout the weekend to make sure new volunteers are ready. pleasant hill police are looking for a driver they say smashed a car into several garages. if you can see your tv right now, these are surveillance pictures of the car. it is a gray or silver vw jetta with temporary plates. this happened in the gregory

the 20s in some spots. in walnut creek, a beautiful shot there, it is about 37 degrees. look at the temperature change. still seeing some low 30s, especially down through morgan hill. look at that, 30 degrees. santa rosa waking up to about 33 degrees. give you an idea of the past 24 hours in comparison to what we've seen earlier this week, oakland is about four degrees warmer. half moon bay nine degrees warmer compared to the past 24 hours. no significant change, but it will be enough to whereby tomorrow we will see some 40s. some of you may be wondering, let's head to the beach. keep in mind there's a beach hazard warning in effect for the entire coastline. we are talking about dangerous sneaker waves and strong rip currents. never turn your back to the ocean. admire from afar and keep a safe distance. now, forecasted highs for today, pleasant afternoon, but we will see an increase in cloud cover. it is going to be just a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. san jose, 65 degrees.

east san jose, 66. down through gilroy and morgan hill we are talking 63, 64. in through the east bay, look at oakland, 61. bring it in through the interior, 62 for concord. 63 for pleasanton. around the 60s as well. not really windy right r throug. santa rosa, 60 degrees. if you live in the north bay, far north bay bay talking sonoma county, there is a small chance of rain that will start to develop, moving in tonight through sunday. keep that in mind. over the next couple of days we have a system just to our north, mainly for those who live in the north bay. we will see a chance of rain heading through tomorrow. also as the increasing cloud cover moves in, we are setting up for a chance of rain ahead, especially into tuesday and wednesday for the entire bay area. this is good news. as you guys know we kind of went on a little bit of a dry spell. also more sierra snow.

intensive immersion program, and that guidance more times coming from folks that look like the youth being served. african americans thriving in an industry that has long struggled to reflect the public. data gathered from the site zipia found that nearly 70% of all computer programmers in the united states are white, 15% are asian, 8 percent identify as hispanic or latino, and less than 5% of those working as computer programmers are black. >> what we try to convey to our young people is, listen, when that's happening that's not your problem, that's their problem, them being that company. they're going to cut off theranoss despite their respective faces. >> reporter: the brilliance of the young participants is evidence with past participants going on to receive prestigious academic awards and bringing the program full circle, coming on board as full-time facilitators, continuing the mission to grow the network of support. in oakland. >> the future i think is bright.

saturday morning. it is 7:42. yes, it is chilly out there. 38 degrees in san jose right now, but, believe it or not, we are actually running a few degrees warmer compared to the past couple of days. no freeze warning. those have expired. a live look in downtown san jose right now. let's head over to walnut creek. a beautiful start though. nice, clear skies. however, we are going to see an increase in the cloud cover heading into the afternoon. it is about 37 degrees right now. i want to show you an outlook of where we currently stand versus the past 24 hours when it comes to that temperature change. now, look how cold it is in dublin, 30 degrees. also down through morgan hill, 30 degrees. low 30s up through napa. 40s nor the city, 45 degrees right now in san francisco. compare that to the past 24 hours. i want to show you the changes as far as a little bit warmer. this is what i mean. it is about four degrees warmer in oakland right now.

four degrees warmer in concord, also through half moon bay. it is going to get warmer. but, first, let's talk about the changes to come. this is a live look right now at sat lie radar. notice the cloud ahead. we have a system to our north, increasing our cloud cover this afternoon. notice this system right here. it will bring a chance to see shower activity for far northern california. we are talking about sonoma county, ukiah area, potentially through santa rosa. if you live in northern california, far north bay, you likely will see rain tonight through sunday. the clouds will return and look at the temperatures through the afternoon. san jose, 65. martina, 61. san francisco, 59. there is a beach hazard statement in effect for the entire coastline. that's this area you see highlighted in green. this is going to remain in place through tomorrow afternoon. we are talking about dangerous sneaker waves and strong rip currents, which means you don't turn your back to the waves. enjoy them from a safe distance, please. more rain ahead. well, i talked about the chance of showers for the north bay

escaping airstrikes in an underground bomb shelter. this video was sent to our jodi hernandez from a family friend in ukraine. it was taken near the black sea, about a seven hour drive from kyiv. her friend told her it was crowded, hot and damp. just in this morning, the u.s. has sent additional military assistance to ukraine. secretary antony blinken released this statement saying, quote, "today, as ukraine fights with courage and pride against russia's brutal and unprovoked assault, i have authorized, pursuant to a delegation by the president, an unprecedented third presidential drawdown of up to $350 million for immediate support to ukraine's defense." the u.s. has been sending money to ukraine over the past year. the total is now more than $1 billion. before we go, vianey has one last check of our weekend forecast. >> this is a seven-day forecast you definitely want to pay attention to because, as you know, kira, we haven't been
