school may decide to have students keep them on. this is "today in the bay." tuesday morning, march 1st as well. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. you can also watch us live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. let's get you started with a look at that commute and the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect from temperatures today. >> we are going to still have the warm weather with us and more clouds moving in. tomorrow we're getting ready for rain and it's not coming in until late tomorrow night, but a lot of changes on the way as we approach the end of the week with rain, hail and possibly low elevation snow. here's the system as we see the rain starting to enter california. we are going to see a long line of clouds and moisture start to move in as we go toward wednesday into thursday. our temperatures today, we're still in the mid to upper 60s.

a very comfortable lunch hour. then we get ready to head to the mid to upper 70s in parts of the south bay. low 70s for the north bay. tonight we're still going to have mild weather. we'll talk about the changes ahead. mike, you have two traffic alerts for i-80. >> we do. this is westbound 80. your commute direction. just seconds ago we heard they've reopened one lane, chp, and folks on scene, there's a crash with a pretty large debris field and folks are asked to get off of the freeway. if you get over toward san pablo avenue, richmond parkway and go around the mall, there's an easier drive. less traffic. but of course it's a longer drive on surface streets. they just reopened one lane of westbound 80 there. eastbound 80 continues with the overnight closure another few minutes and they should clear the roadway heading north from

780 up along toward highway 37 through vallejo. that was a scheduled overnight closure and we warned you about that. the rest of the bay, easy drive, back to you. >> breaking news overseas, russia's attack on ukraine ukra continuing at this hour. at least six people, including one child, were injured in this explosion. >> as the fighting continues, ukraine forces are refusing to back down. video showing men lining up to volunteer. now, the country's army now including countless men ages 18-20. >> and dozens of diplomats from the european union, united states and brittain walking out of a speech by the russian foreign minister. he was addressing a u.n. human rights forum this morning. the move was made as a sign of solidarity. >> "today in the bay's" jay gray

is along the ukraine border with more on refugees seeking help. >> reporter: overnight the desperate rush to escape ukraine continues. to this point more than 500,000, many too young to understand, leaving their lives and often loved ones behind. >> i'm so scared about my husband. i don't want to say good-bye. >> reporter: but not nearly as dangerous as staying home. a senior u.s. defense official saying 75% of russia's troops along the border are now fully engaged in the fight. a primary target, kyiv. satellite images showing a convoy of russian equipment and troops outside the capital city, a line that overnight reportedly grew to more than 40 miles long. the buildup of russian troops building the resolve of ukraine fighters. officials posting drone video

they say shows the ukraine military taking out a russian strike team. less than a week after the invasion, there are growing signs of the toll this war is taking on their homeland. >> we are on the verge of a large humanitarian crisis. >> reporter: a crisis defined by communities burned out and ripped apart, and the faces of those forced to run. jay gray, nbc news, along the polish/ukrainian border. developing this morning, a deadly mass shooting at a sacramento church. deputies say a father shot and killed four people, including his three daughters, then he took his own life. authorities are not confirming the identity of the fourth person killed, but they say the victim was shap reasoning them as part of a supervised visit and the father had a restraining order against him from his estranged wife. neighbors heard the gunfire. they called the scene chaotic. >> we saw a bunch of activity and they were screaming,

shooting at the church. >> the three girls were 9, 10 and 13 years old. the sheriff is not yet revealing their identities or the name of the gunman. 4:35, and we are moving you forward this morning as districts across the state have until march 12th to make a decision about mask mandates in classrooms. the state says that it's okay to end the mask rules, but not all districts are ready to make that change, including san francisco unified. >> health officials are still recommending masking indoors in schools, and they have said that indoor masking is one of the least burdensome policies schools can have in place. >> the state dropping the mask mandate for unvaccinated people as well. beginning today, masks are no longer mandatory for anyone, just strongly recommended. that being said, individual businesses can still decide to keep their own mask rules in place. masks will still be required in health care settings and public transit. and a reminder, county rules can

override state rules. that means if you live in santa clara county, you must still wear the mask until wednesday at midnight. and happening today, san francisco school board members are expected to hold an official vote on proposed layoffs. you may recall it was originally scheduled for a week ago. it was delayed for a special meeting last thursday where no vote was taken. the board may improve more than 300 layups and eliminate $30 million in bonuses and raises. applying for a job never easy. still ahead on "today in the bay," the way one popular job site is helping you explain your gap years to your employer. >> plus, questioning practices. we investigate the growing concerns being raised about the new way pg&e is trying to prevent wildfires. >> and we're talking out the door to temperatures in the upper 40s for the south bay, but check out napa. we've dropped down to 39 degrees. we'll get a look at all of our

percent gain. for the month, the dow, nasdaq and s&p all losing more than 3% as russia invaded ukraine and worries about inflation and rising interest rates also hit stocks. in focus today we're awaiting reports on manufacturing, construction spending and auto sales, plus we'll get earnings from salesforce.com, we heard from target and they had much better than expected earnings. meantime, linkedin wants to help you explain any career gaps in your resumé to a potential employer. it's rolled out a new tool to highlight what you learned from those experiences. you can add a career gap, which include care giving, parenting, layoffs or travel, and they can put that on their profile and linkedin is also offering free online courses through march to help people transition back to work after having taken a break. and it's ihop national pancake
