to work or even run sop errands. >> this morning we're helping you get answers as we move forward out of the pandemic. it's day two of our conversation with the mayors of the bay area's largest city, oakland, san francisco and san jose. we all know what it's like to deal with covid surges. >> and if you saw our interview on monday, you already know that medical experts say that a new covid variant is not out of the realm of possibility, so we asked the city leaders what plans are in place should a new variant emerge. we begin with oakland mayor libby schaaf. >> oakland is blessed with the best climate in the world, and we saw how during those spikes in covid people were safer and felt safer outdoors, and so just last week we actually made our flex streets program permanent. that means giving small businesses, especially our beloved restaurants, outdoor space where they can very inexpensively move out to. we also learned how to pop up
4:37 am
outdoor marketplaces. we did one by lake merritt. it was very popular. we now know how to do that rapidly so people have access to the commerce and to safe communing in the out of doors. >> do you have a plan in place if it happens to extend? we all had to adjust during this? >> continuing to keep the pedal on the metal in terms of making sure we get more vaccinations h.lots of success in san jose. we're the most vaccinated big city in the country and that says a lot about our community more than anything and says a lot about the human infrastructure that we've been able to develop, in partnership with the county, community organizations, getting to every city, more particularly where many of our residents may not speak english where there's a lot of cultural barriers and we encourage them to get vaccinated. that human infrastructure is going to be critical for us to maintain. we don't yet know if the finish
4:38 am
line is near. >> right. >> we're certainly all pushing to get there, but if in fact there's a new variant that causes us serious concern about a rapid rise in hospitalization, we have to be honest with folks to maintain the credibility because what we're seeing in all the studies that those communities did best in this pandemic where there was a high level of trust and government. >> well, we've always looked at the data and why we shut down first as the city had everything to do with that, we saved i believe thousands of lives with our quick action and with 83% of san franciscans that are fully vaccinated, we're really proud of what san francisco has done despite not completely knowing in the beginning, you know, what this meant and how long we would be closed, and so our plans, of course, is to ramp up our testing, to make sure our capacity and our hospitalization rates are on par, but more importantly to make sure that we're using data and science to make any decision to pivot if we have to depending on a new
4:39 am
variant and its impact on the community. we're prepared to do what it takes just like we've done throughout this pandemic. hiing ahead. >> had a lot of practice in doing things differently. the conversation, of course, does not end here. >> our week long series concludes with us asking the mayors what their top priorities are as they move their cities forward into a new chapter. stay tuned because that part is coming up for you tomorrow morning. >> 4:39 for you this morning and the changes uber and lyft are making to you and your friends when it comes to dining out.
