on big parade day. how is it looking at the celebration you could be attending? mr. roker is standing by with the full forecast. the latest out of ukraine and russia's relentless bombings over many cities over night. many of the targets housing civilians, including a theater where hundreds were hunkering inside. after the president zelenskyy making an appeal to the president and he spoke one-on-one with lester holt. we do begin with our coverage with richard engel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, we are now on the edges of kyiv and each stations have been set up here to evacuate some of the injured. the vast majority of the casualties they are seeing are civilians. >> reporter: russia's war plan now is scorching.

bombing now everyday, apartment buildings in kyiv. on the edge of kyiv this morning in a hospital, katrina was selling yogurt and milk in the market. she came out of her basement to wash her blanket when a missile exploded. it blew off her leg and sent shrapnel. >> before i had a house and a job and now i am disabled and have no home for what she asks. >> reporter: mariupol? the south, many images are too graphic to broadcast, one medic accounts from u.n. outlet. >> every shelling means torn apart of hands and legs. it is unpleasant to hear about this but you have to listen. we can't bury the bodies, we can't get people with wounds and

broken bones out of their houses because they are trapped in basement. avoid to killing civilians? had been useless. mariupol's main theater in front and back are signs in russians that reads children. they're large enough to be visible from the air. ukraine's government says hundreds of people were sheltering inside, russia struck the theater anyway, claiming the a military headquarters. it is unclear how many have been killed or injured. russia may be bombing mariupol because it wants to keep in an event of settlement. the city could give russia a strategic land bridge to crimea. ukrainian troops are not taking this lining down. american intelligence estimates reporting ukrainian forces have killed around 7,000 russians so far. more than the u.s. lost in afghanistan and iraq combined. president putin maybe willing to lose many more. in an angry sounding speech, he frames the war as a fight for russia's survival. he accused the ukrainian government, calling them nazis working with the united states

joins our own lester holt for an exclusive one-on-one, lester is joining us for that interview. >> good morning. president zelenskyy challenged the u.s. and the nato allies to do more to help his country speaking candidly through a ukrainian government provided an interpreter about what greater u.s. involvement would signal to the rest of the world. >> once again you renewed your call for a new-fly zone but you made the pitch for an alternative and that's fighter planes. do you think that president biden is inching closer to perhaps reconsidering a transferring fighter planes to ukraine? >> translator: this is the choice for president biden to take and hopefully that choice would coincide with the choice of the ukrainian people because currently russia has an advantage in the air. >> reporter: president biden has been very clear he's worried

about provocations that could trigger world war iii, do you understand his concerns there and do you agree it would not take much to end up in world war iii? >> translator: well, nobody knows whether it may have already started and what's the possibility of war for ukraine to fall. we have the whole civilization at stake. >> reporter: the u.s. administration raised concerns that russia may launch a chemical attack. do you think that'll be a red line that the u.s. would move forward and become more actively involved in combat? >> translator: i believe that russians have already crossed all the red lines when they started shelling civilians, when they started using cruise missiles, they're

members of a college team. these parents lost their daughter. clarissa just 21 years old and a biology nature and a devoted christian. >> she was my baby. i don't know what i'm going to do without her. >> reporter: the accident happened after 8:00 p.m. tuesday on a remote farm road north of midland texas. the team was returning from a tournament when a pickup truck crossed over into their lane. authorities said the head on collision grew worse when flames engulfed both vehicles. by standers tried desperately to save those trapped inside. we're going to need two helicoptered, please. >> reporter: both remained in critical condition. but six athletes their coach and two others inside the pickup truck lost their lives.
