living there with his partner was shot while waiting in a bread line. we start with our chief foreign correspondent richard engel on the ground in ukraine. richard good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. russia continued its bombing campaign in this country. attacking kyiv hitting this apartment compound around 8:00 this morning. at least one person was killed. more than a dozen injured. it could have been much much worse. many of the homes around here are completely destroyed. all day people have been coming to try and salvage what they can from their homes. and it wasn't just here. also near lviv which has generally been considered a safe area. attacking civilians in kyiv in their homes as they were waking for breakfast on purpose. but since a state did this, it is called yet another attack on a soft target. for ukrainians the result is the

same. the attack happened around 8:00 in the morning and it didn't just destroy one apartment building but landed right in the center of a complex, destroying a playground and all the homes around it. in one apartment a sink is covered in blood. more stains by the door likely from the injured making their way out. an elementary school in the compound was also damaged. so was a kindergarten and a supermarket. salvaging what she could, she was still coming to terms with how her life was unended in an instant. i have no home now and nowhere to live. where am i go to go she asked. with russia's military offensive stalled and troops suffers thousands of casualties, russia is lashing out at civilians in a punishing campaign of collective punishment. north of kyiv in hard hit

chernihiv, the state department confirm an american killed yesterday. he was in ukraine to be be with his partner who has multiple sclerosis. he was searching for food when he died in a bread line killed along with at least nine other people in chernihiv. >> my brother would spend half the year here and the other half in ukraine and getting teaching positions at different universities to do lectures and things like that so he could be with ira in this last trip he was getting special medicine organizing that. he really loved her so deeply. and in this world it is hard to find like your soul mate. and that's how he referred to ira, as his soul mate.

this is the train station, above the train station in lviv. and medical workers are on standby to help refugees deal with deep psychologically trauma. right now the u.n. estimates that one child is leaving ukraine almost every second. from train stations to border crossings, to churches. the largest refugee crisis are since world war ii is growing larger by the hour. this woman escaped with her two dogs and little else as her home near kyiv was bombed. do you know where you will go? >> this mother tells me she's headed to poland like most of the refugees. but the u.n. says the numbers are rising exponentially throughout europe. in all a staggering 3.2 million people have already fled ukraine in just weeks. reverend igor calls it surreal and he's stepping in to help. why are you doing the? >> well, if you go to the train station at night and see people with little children freezing there, it is cold at night. i mean, you have to choice. >> reporter: at his church now a

shelter, we meet bogdan who's lost touch with his wife and four children after the home where they were staying without him was bombed. he hasn't heard from them in nearly a week. >> you don't know where your family -- >> yeah, i know they are not in ukraine. go, but don't nowhere. >> reporter: we're also seeing the first survivors from siege in mariupol make the treacherous journey into western ukraine. sat a children's hospital we meet oksana and her 8 year old son. not only the country at war. he's fighting cancer. he's scared and exhausted she tells us. we lived in a basement for three weeks. but there are glimmers of hope. after we first spoke, bogdan finally got ahold of his wife and kids. they are somewhere in poland heading to germany. >> i think god is pleased e d answered. item really happy.

this update nothing short of shocking. the authorities revealed the driver of the pickup truck that veered into on coming traffic slamming into that golf van was a 13 year old boy and also shared a potential cause for this tragic collision. stunning new details this morning about the deadly crash killing nine in west texas. including seven members of a college golf team. federal investigators now saying a young child was driving the vehicle that struck the team's van in the fiery and fatal collision. >> a 13 year old child was behind the well a. behind the wheel of the pickup truck. >> reporter: ntsb agents say next to the child in the passenger seat was 38 year old. both died at the scene. >> we don't speculate on anything. it was very clearly a high speed head on collision between two heavy vehicles. >> the speed limit on the highway, 75 miles per hour. investigators also revealing new evidence that suggest a failed

in a lubbock, texas hospital. we don't know why the 13-year-old was behind the wheel. authorities have not revealed the relationship between the boy and henrich siemens. we did reach out to the siemens family who right now are declining comment. >> lot of questions still on that one. morgan, thank you. turning now to the pandemic. covid cases have fallen dramatically here in the united states. down 40% to an average of about 35,000 a day over the last two weeks. deaths also way down as well. dropping 60% over that same period. but now all eyes are on a new strain, ba.2. it is fuelling a spike in new infections across europe now dr. ashish jha joins us. soon he's taking over as white house covid-19 response coordinator. dr. jha. welcome. ba.2 hitting hard now. is it reasonable to expect that is going to happen here this time around as well? >> thanks for having me. ba.2 is around it is in the u.s. as well. we've got a lot of it. not as much as europe.

as you know lot of the mitigation efforts have been rolled back. mask mandates rolled back. did we do it all too soon? are you at all concerned or do you think we're going to be okay? >> i think we're going to be okay for couple months i've been saying as infections fall, it is reasonable to lift mask mandates hospitalizations fall. reasonable to lift a lot of those restrictions if you look at the cdc map right now, about 90% of the country is in pretty good shape so i think in those places we don't need substantial mitigation efforts and we want to see what happens in the weekd i'm also hop thatter, warmer weather, pe spending more time outside, that is going to be helpful as well. >> quick, congrats on the new gig. white house response >> we've got work to do. preparing for future variants if we get them. the first order of business is the president has laid out a
