training exercise. courtney kube joins us with the latest. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right, kristin. the norwegian prime minister, the first to announce that four u.s. service members on board that mv 22 os pray were killed in the crash. the aircraft was initially missing a number of hours before the u.s. could find it. and that underscores how difficult and dangerous the weather conditions were in the area. there's an exercise going on, a nato exercise, cold response 22. it has been long planned, has nothing to do with the ongoing tensions in ukraine but more than 30,000 nato members, including the united states, are taking part in the exercise. the idea is they're looking at how they can operate in extremely cold weather conditions and dangerous

conditions like they saw yesterday. the exercise as i said has nothing to do with ukraine and u.s. officials we have spoken to said most likely the very early indications is the crash was weather related. there are no indications it had anything to do with russia. of course, the backdrop of all of this is the united states and nato preparing to operate and deploy in these conditions as tensions are going on in ukraine. >> courtney, thank you so much. >> a good reminder of risk that exists in this climate. now to the war in ukraine. russia is keeping up the unprovoked assault, civilians bearing the brunt of attacks, president putin widens his offensive. our team has it covered. we begin with the latest from ukraine and nbc's molly hunter in lviv this morning where there were a new round of explosions overnight.

molly, good morning. >> reporter: peter, kristin, good morning. that's right. around 1:00 a.m. overnight, a lot of us heard a series of loud explosions. an hour ago, a series of air raid sirens, no word what the sounds were, what was targeted. the russians are claiming they're using hypersonic missiles elsewhere in ukraine. this morning, russia fully embraced a new kind of war. uk defense officials say putin's army failed original objectives, now pursuing attrition. indiscriminate bombing of civilian centers, president zelenskyy creating the kremlin of creating a humanitarian catastrophe, starving out cities like mariupol. we have nothing to eat. my child is hungry. test tefen living in a basement the last three weeks? >> yes.

like ways and gas buddy. they'll help you find the cheapest stations to fill up along the route. try not to accelerate and stop quickly. those things eat into the gas tank. finally, make sure your car is maintained before you head on that trip. put tires at the right pressure, make sure you get a check engine light taken care of. all of that helps with gas mileage. >> an important one. vicki, if you try to pick a destination, where should folks be considering? >> we talked to folks at scots cheap flights. avoid hot spots, orlando, miami, vegas. you may find cheap air fare, ce you getthere, h prices will be skyigh. of america's great big cities. san cisco, chicago, new york city. they're recovering from the pandemic. that means you find great prices on air fare, competitive hotel rates. i can tell you from experience, new york city is coming alive.
