now this is headed just left. what he needed to do. >> he would like to have been more online with the flag and have a little bit of slope in it. it's pretty fast. >> talking about the wind, sam burns, rise up to second in the fedex cup standings and become the latest multiple winner of the pga tour this season. and davis riley, what this could mean for him. we talked about it earlier. made the biggest decision of his life when he decided to turn pro in his second semester of his senior year and got advice from his good buddy will zal tore i didn't say -- zalatoris who he roomed with. he went on the korn ferry tour and has been a prominent player.
3:31 pm
talking about the junior days of playing with sam burns and company. kind of destined to pga tour stardom. i know it's easy to put a label on everybody who looks good coming up but he has all of the attributes. ask justin thomas who took a liking to him when he came to alabama. j.t.me. their swings look so similar. >> very solid. their swings do look similar. he has to hit a special bunker shot now. i don't know what he's got down there. >> if it wasn't the situation it is, it's the most basic bunker shot you could have. on the upslope and plenty of green to work with and into the wind. >> there you go.
3:32 pm
>> a good push-out underneath the ball. >> just what you want to do. you don't to -- >> that is being in totally control of your nerves. never been in a spot like this before. and to hit that shot, very impressive. he swung hard enough that we could hear it slap the sand. >> burns is looking to climb up into the elite of the top ten world. young davis riley currently 399th ranked player in the world and would climb almost 300 spots with a victory. first things first here. burns with another putt here to win the championship. >> he had a putt from a similar part of the green in regulation.
3:33 pm
chipped it over a little bit longer and a little bit over. so he knows there is a few extra feet of run-out in this. >> from 35 feet. >> that looked good a long time. >> a really good effort. he's got a little left, kind of like he did earlier. i tell you what, another bold effort by burns. this guy is all about the win in golf tournaments. you can see it when he plays, zing. >> he looked like he had total control until the bogey at 17 and then after playing those two good shots in to 18, like, all right. >> how about the bogey putt he made? >> yeah. incredible. >> at 17. he wouldn't be here. >> then riley comes right in there at 17 and makes birdie.
3:34 pm
a two-shot swing and burns has a real knee-network. >> knee-knocker. >> you have to be careful with this but he has made every single one of them that really mattered today. riley to match. one more smooch. this to continue a playoff at the 16th hole. this would have won it in regulation. a par on the first playo
3:35 pm
3:36 pm
burns and riley arriving on the tee he at the par 4 16th. it was the second most difficult hole throughout this championship. there were 11 double bogeys recorded and one triple bogey. no dangerous tee shot on the entire course. >> really, gary, so intimidating.
3:37 pm
burns is going with a hybrid. see if he makes that same selection and hit it to the widest part of this landing area. >> it appears to be the club. notay? burns has played the hole at even par and bogey in the first round and made a birdie here in round three. >> you mentioned, gary, earlier, that this hole is causing problems for burns historically. i think a good play. he understands he needs to get it out there in the fairway. >> get people going across the fairway. slow things down. take your time. get set. hit >> yeah, marshals aren't quite
3:38 pm
doing their job right now so sam burns has to collect himself. caddie steps in to reassure him to reset and get refocused. very similar line to nearly in the day. >> this gets deeper and into the prior cut of rough. there is one pine tree at issue ahead. riley, as he did in regulation, going with driver. >> just replay that visual in your head.s cutting back.
3:39 pm
looks really good. >> yeah. very nice.
3:40 pm
3:41 pm
our coverage continues as we leave the state of florida and head across the gulf of mexico to austin, texas. dell technologies matchplay begins wednesday at 2:00 eastern time on the golf channel. justin thomas is headed there after another narrow miss here. jon rahm, number one player in the world, he is headed there as well. >> got a little matchplay going on right now. >> yes. advantage davis riley. >> sam burns will be a part of it as well and trying to finish off his third win, gary. >> yeah. a report from notay begay about his lie? >> a decent lie in between the two skinny pines along the left side of this favorites. no tree issues and should be able to the lie he wants here.
3:42 pm
the exact same yardage as he did earlier today, except that was from the first cut. this is going to be from the heavier stuff. so kind of gives you a better understanding of just how to plan this shot out. >> the difficulty of the hole today. back hole location is [ inaudible ] four birdies the entire round. very narrow. only ten yards wide.
3:43 pm
>> gary, i think, under the circumstances going after this hole location. i know that wouldn't be prudent in regulation but i think under this circumstance, he may just take it on. >> that is left. will it hold on? yes, it will. so a nice shot. distance very well from the rough. riley positioned about as well as you could be. >> 100% left side of the fairway and should have a good idea how far the ball is going. played this hole just a half hour ago or so. >> i agree. just take something off the back.
3:44 pm
>> just off to the right. >> 175. this is 8 iron. hit it just over but a 9 iron in regulation from 159. this mathematically seems like a perfect club for him. good contact. just left of the flag. may need to get down a hair. >> okay. first cut of rough. >> do you get the feeling we are
3:45 pm
looking at a future of golf here? a couple of 25-year-olds? >> certainly could be. obviously, sam burns is pretty much in that stratus right now. 17th in the world. >> you're right. he is here. considered for the ryder cup position and in great position to play on the presidents cup team later in the fall but davis riley showing a lot and especially coming back from a triple bogey at the front nine and held it together very nicely. >> certain guys you see on the practice tee today, zing. we watched young davis riley warm up. just got technically such a sound swing. >> looked so good. we know he won twice on the korn ferry tour and wasn't able to play the pga tour because of the covid and the whole thing. he has really been kind of put on the shelf after getting out here on the tour. now this is his 25th event. dan, he has put himself right in position. he is playing with friends at the top.
3:46 pm
that what is so amazing. >> yes. >> he knows the player he is trying to beat and that helps a little bit. >> during that pandemic pause, he played a lot of golf with his good buddy will zalatoris. they continue to be competitive and play and wait for their time. >> i can't help but thinking knowing zalatoris as well as he does and seeing the success that zalatoris has had, the chances to win big events. you play with a guy all of the time at home and you say i can play as well as he can. >> as we talk about earlier. these guys have known each other since they were young teenagers, burns and riley. they look each other in the eye and they have been doing that a long time. >> kind of cool. you're right. that is what happens. guys they play practice rounds with and watch them play well, they can do that.
3:47 pm
>> it appears riley is going to play first. >> it seems like they are setting up that way. although i think burns is further away from the hole. >> that would be his option. right. probably 100% go in order. >> i would too. >> burns is going to go first. that is the right way to do it. >> watching putts all day. a little uphill and tiny right to the start. he gets up to the level part where the hole is, it straightens out. >> did he make another one? yes, he did! whoa!
3:48 pm
you can tell by the speed and thought it might miss left, but he lets all of the hole! >> exactly what he needed to do. >> 32 feet away. he has already done it once today. >> well, burns with his third pga tour in 22 starts. this is a win for sure.
3:49 pm
>> really beautiful. he made all of the putts he had to make the last nine holes. >> a similar celebration as to what it was last year when he had his hole family here. sam burns buries it. the jaws the beginning of the snakepit and it just rattles around. it found the bottom. >> what a putt that was. >> let's go down to kathryn tappen. >> sam, congratulations. you successfully defends your title from last season and wasn't easy. two playoff holes to do. can you describe the emotions and of the moment and tis win?
3:50 pm
>> just hit me. crazy. davis played well today, especially the way he finished. you know, hats off to him. he played great. yeah, just try to stay steady today and we didn't make a lot of mistakes and i think, you know, a lot of times on sundays, if you can just putt your way around and make a puff pars and a few birdies here and there and sometimes it works well. travis did a great job this week. so happy. >> your third pga tour win the last year and first one came here at the valspar championship a year ago. you move into the top ten in the world rankings. what is it about your game that is working so well for you right now? >> i don't know. i think my coach actually came down on monday just, you know, struggling in the final round of players and just said, hey, man, i need some help. and huge thanks to you. i couldn't do it without put. a lot of hard work. >> you did it against a long time friend and competitor with
3:51 pm
you with davis. how much fun was it to play with him out there today? >> it was a blast. you know, unfortunately, i got the better end of him today but i think throughout our careers, we will have a lot of battles and he is one heck of a player and i'm really happy for him and how well he has been playing. just excited for our team. >> all right. congratulations, sam. >> appreciate it. >> now over to john wood. >> davis, not the outcome you were looking for but we learned a lot about you. what did you learn about yourself the last two days? >> yeah, you know, i got punched in the mouth pretty early. fought back. i knew if i kept staying, i would have a chance to win but unfortunately doesn't have my best stuff today and that just happens. >> did you find something in your driver's swing on the 10th hole? you drove it all over the place not only on the front nine but great in the back and the playoffs. did you find something in your swing? >> yes, i did. i thought i reset and adrenaline going and not staying within myself. try to reset on the back nine. that was kind of a good reset
3:52 pm
button for me. >> did you and lance talked about the 5th hole after it was over to reset yourself for the day? >> yeah. we we said there is a lot of golf to play. and triple sucks. unfortunately, that hole kind of cost me. >> thanks four time, davis. great play-in. >> thanks. >> woody, thank you. we saw a guy putt his way to the championship title last week. i tell you what, zing, sam burns was about perfect today. doing it at the 16th hole. >> a thrill to hole a putt like that and a playoff. he was the guy. >> his wife caroline there. he talked about last year when he won for the first time here at the valspar. a lot of his family, a ton of his friends and they are,
3:53 pm
obviously, all here again including his wife as you saw there. this one was pretty wild. the start of it, especially. gary, start with you. when he made that triple bogey, talk about davis riley first. what were your feelings? how big was this bounce-back for this young 25-year-old? >> well, i think it was huge, dan. obviously, lance bennett, his caddie, had a big part in keeping him kind of in the moment. there were a lot of holes left to play. if that had happened later on the back nine a different story. he hung in there and got back in it and he'll take a lot from the fact he was able to hit that shot on 17 and make a birdie when he absolutely had to do it. he hit a couple of good shots there at 18 and gave himself a chance to win the golf tournament. >> sam burns continues to make his way up the ranks, tenths in the world now. he is shoulder-to-shoulder with a lot of good players we have been watching a long time now. >> he really is. he is just -- he seems so much older than 25 out there.
3:54 pm
you know? he made a lot of great and mature decisions and tough ones. he hit the shots that he needed to hit when he needed to hit them. it was a really impressive performance. >> all right. thanks, guys. let's show you how the highlights happened here today leading to the playoff. from earlier today, this was in regulation. sam burns, which ended up, this would have won the championship. his only bogey of the day at 17 and that left the door open for davis riley who delivered this approach and he had his own birdie look. >> these two guys really held up today. really with different, you know, problems and issues. >> then in the playoff at 18, shot here by davis here below the hole. >> it was an emotional battle for him really after he tripled 5 and held in there. >> able to save par.
3:55 pm
burns had another chance to win it. peak on sunday and defend his title. >> traded a couple of pars in the first playoff hole. they went to the snakepit and came out of the edge of the collar. the difference maker here. so this great play continuing for burns. that forced riley to make it. burns was a winner on the second hole in the fourth playoff here at the valspar championship. he joins paul casey as the only other back-to-back winner on the copperhead course here. along with it comes 500 fedex cup points. sam burns is in the middle of scheffler and cameron smith, a couple of other multiple winners this season along with hideki
3:56 pm
matsuyama, another multiple winner. sam burns now heads to the world golf championship, the matchplay, as a guy to look out for. he played well at the players championship last week in terrible weather conditions. he paid it a little bit on the final round monday but a lot of guys did. he's on a roll here and i expect him to do the same at the world golf championships as well. >> he actually had a chance at the honda classic as well but he'll be tough. that was a nice little matchplay situation between those two guys in the playoff. life changing really for davis riley not wing the tournament. sam burns is just going to rolling into that matchplay with all kinds of confidence and just watch out for him. you know? he is not the guy you want to bump in to in the matchplay next week. >> tee-to-green, he's had a strong game for a long time and that has kind of been his strength and what we have looked at, powerful player.
3:57 pm
but -- >> putter wins the tournaments. you cannot really ball strike your way to the championship. you have to hole key putts and he did that today. >> sam burns joining cam smith who won the players last year and scottie scheffler won bay hill and 2 out of 3. and matsuyama for his multiple victories. gary koch, you've been coming to this golf course since 1972. what are your final thoughts on how this ended up? >> how sam burns plays the golf course. he has now won two years in a row and 34 under partnership in those eight rounds. i would say a horse for a course. sam burns and the copperhead go together. >> what about the future of sam burns, david? >> i'm just stunned at the future all of these guys. the shots we have seen over this florida swing and you always get it in these bermuda conditions
3:58 pm
where it's kind of tricky. davis riley hit a recovery shot yesterday that was i don't say -- astonishing and shots of that quality. >> thanks, guys. valspar championship ends with a playoff and sam burns is the winner. dell technologies matchplay starts wednesday at 2:00 on our golf channel.
