we still have them, they just got by the squeaker tonight. i'll root for them. we will have a lot more on the tournament in a bit. but we start with a pretty busy week ahead. >> that's right, including the series of potential storms across central and southern united states. it starts today. al is at the ready. with all of the details straight ahead. >> also getting under way today the confirmation hearing for ketanji brown jackson, the supreme court nominee of president biden and we will bring you live coverage. in the meantime the president travels to brussels to attend a nato summit on the war in ukraine and we learned he will visit poland where millions of refugees have fled since the invasion began. the major breaking news unfolding in china at this hour. a boeing 737 crashed just hours ago, 132 people on board, nbc's janis mackey frayer joins us from beijing with the latest. details are still fuzzy but what is the latest you're hearing from there? >> reporter: good morning.

there is still very little information about why this plane went down. happened about five hours ago. but there are some videos starting to come in as rescue workers reach the crash site. this morning a catastrophic plane crash in southern china, debris on the ground, smoke rising from the area, where the boeing 737 apparently went down. chinese state tv is sharing pictures of the aftermath. flight 5735 left the airport just after 1:00 p.m. here, heading over the mountains toward gaungzhou what was supposed to be less than a two-hour trip. but the plane abruptly lost speed and altitude about 130 miles out according to flight data. chinese civil aviation authority said radar contact was lost. authorities confirm 123 passengers and 9 crew on board. emergency crews scrambling to reach them.

china eastern airlines turned its website dark with so little known about survivors. it is china's worst airline disaster in a decade. the country has a good aviation safety record that officials have credited to newer planes and strict flying rules. the china eastern plane was a boeing 737 89p that was just over six years old. for now no information on the cause. boeing has faced issues in the past over different planes. the 737 maxes were temporarily grounded in 2019 and 2020 after crashes. china's president xi jingping released a statement saying he is shocked by the crash and ordered extra workers to the crash scene. expecting 500 by tonight. boeing and china airline say they are still waiting for details they are able to piece together with the flight data to suggest what might have happened. but of course with 132 people on board, people are waiting most

for information on survivors and tonight people seem to be preparing for the worst. >> what a tragedy, janis mackey frayer, thank you. now to the crisis in ukraine where officials there are refusing russia's demand to surrender the port city of mariupol despite a near constant bombardment. russia forces intensifying attack there is and across the e country. nbc's chief correspondent richard engel is there in kyiv good morning >> reporter: good morning. russia carried out yet another missile strike right in the center of kyiv this morning hitting a shopping mall, damaging surrounding homes, killing at least eight people. the mayor here in kyiv is imposing yet another of his blanket curfews. it starts tonight and will last for 35 hours, as the expectation is there could be more attacks here and certainly in the besieged city of mariupol

russia offered ukraine a bullies ultimatum. give in now or be destroyed. the russian defense ministry said ukraine had until this morning to surrender the port city of mariupol even though it is russia who's been bombing shelters, including a theater marked children where hundreds still remain unaccounted for and an art school where hundreds more were hiding president zelenskyy didn't wait for the day to end to give an answer no no surrender describing what was happening in mariupol as a war crime. nationwide russia's military advance has largely stalled, facing tough resistance. but russia is still attacking civilian locations, including overnight a shopping mall in kyiv so it is safer to stay underground now in the capital a few miles from the mall is this special shelter for foreign babies born to ukrainian surrogates, sharing a crib, these two are the new arrivals born just a few days

ago. 18 babies here, their biological parents unable to collect them because of the war until then the war babies are in caring hands the shelter is clean and fresh smelling, well stocked and with loving nurses like this. "we're giving them lots of love and taking care of their needs." each baby has been given a temporary name to make it easier for staff and a number that corresponds to the baby's bottle and the staff they're here 24/7 sleeping down in this shelter not leaving the babies alone >> translator: yes, we are with the kids 24/7. we don't have much time for anything else, but we're used to it, she said as a surrogate parent myself, i can imagine the stress and anxiety the biological parents feel separated from their newborns they have never met, trapped down here and not knowing what tomorrow will bring. and there are more children

coming some kids are getting collected but more pregnant carriers, pregnant women are giving birth. so there is more on the way. >> translator: yes, others who are pregnant drop off new babies she says >> what do you need right now? what would help the situation, these children >> translator: we ask to stop the war, she says, we need help for this nightmare to end. >> antonioia told me the staff protects the baby and these little angels the staff believes protect them, too. we reached out to the surrogacy agency running that shelter. they said they don't want donations. they are doing fine. but there are many charities operating in this country, including the red cross, save the children there is a ukrainian charity called come back alive and if people want to help there are many organizations doing

that military leaders forced to the front line to improve morale and organization questions of president putin's state of mind are not helpful according to a senior advisor who was on a call between turkey's president erdogan and the russian leader last week. >> president putin was as usual on the call, calm and making his case, and explaining his position >> he says a meeting between president putin and president zelenskyy will happen. but not yet. >> mr. zelenskyy says he is ready. but mr. putin thinks the positions are not close enough yet. >> reporter: the u.s. says any peace deal must be permanent and irreversible for crippling sanctions on russia to be lifted while president putin calls those sanctions an economic blitzkrieg vowing they will fail this morning the u.s. and russia agreeing on one thing, that a

>> with a lifetime appointment on the line, judge jackson will spend up to 12 hours a day in this room the next three days answering questions from a panel evenly divided between democrats and republicans. it is a legal and political gauntlet that could be her last job interview ever this morning as washington gears up for history-making supreme court confirmation hearings, current justice clarence thomas hospitalized over the weekend with flu-like symptoms the court saying thomas has an infection and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics and is expected to be released in the next few days. it comes as all eyes are on confirmation hearings for judge ketanji brown jackson beginning today. jackson would become the first african american woman ever to serve on the court today, opening statements followed by two long days of questioning. a process jackson knows well

>> judge jackson has been scrutinized more than any person i can think of this is her fourth time before the senate judiciary committee >> reporter: president biden's first supreme court nominee. harvard educated nine years as a federal judge and experienced as public defender republicans have been pouring over her record for clues as to how she would rule as justice jackson. some raising concerns about what they claim are over lenient sentences in child predator cases. >> she's consistently given lenient sentences, slaps on the brisk. wrist. >> reporter: judge jackson's allies disputing the claims in what could be a preview of contentious hearing days to come. >> they are still trying to figure out how to go after her. >> reporter: democrats hoping the hearings could win over republican lawmakers but as the process gets under way today none are showing their cards. >> i want us to vet judge

jackson's judicial philosophy. i don't want us to attack her as a human. >> reporter: and in the evenly divided senate judge jackson could be confirmed just with democratic votes and vice president harris breaking the tie. >> garrett haake in the room where it will happen thank you. for more on the politics at play, nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker we've heard some potential lines of attack from republicans along the law enforcement line how is judge jackson and the white house preparing for this >> reporter: good morning. judge jackson has been preparing for this moment for weeks we are told including mock hearings led by the white house council office she went for a walk-through of the hearing room on saturday officials say she is bracing for tough questions on everything from her position on abortion rights to affirmative action, and even the push by some democrats to put more justices on the bench now, her background will be under scrutiny as well specifically her time as a public defender and the fact she served for less than a year on

the d.c. circuit court some republicans are signaling they will paint her as soft on crime. the white house has already been forcefully pushing back on that. noting she's earned the endorsement of major law enforcement organizations. and it is also worth noting that one of her introducers today is judge thomas griffith, a well known conservative jurist and really underscores the white house strategy to present her as a bipartisan pick. >> some said maybe this isn't going to be as contentious of prior hearings it is not going change the ideological balance of the court so perhaps the stakes are lower but it is a supreme court fight. they are always high what are you looking for as this plays out? >> reporter: there could be a few fireworks, savannah, at the hearings, because there are a number of potential 2024 presidential hopefuls who sit on the judiciary committee including senators ted cruz, tom cotton and josh hawley who you just saw in garrett's piece. in garrett's piece these types of hearings are

traditionally a chance for senators to highlight their biggest issues still the white house does feel confident judge jackson will be confirmed and she would replace liberal justice briar and would not change the ideological balance of the court but the question is also, savannah, if there are some contentious exchanges, will the president get the political balance he is looking for from this historic pick with the mid terms looming very large, savannah. >> kristen, thank you. and nbc news will bring live coverage of this week's confirmation hearings starting a bit later this morning 7:18 a check of the weather mr. roker. severe weather to talk about over the next couple of days starting with this afternoon, 22 million people at risk for damaging hail, strong tornadoes, lasting into tonight knock turm tornadoes twice, nocturnal tornadoes twice as deadly gusts up to 60 miles per hour. tuesday night a moderate risk in the lower gulf

damaging winds again, several significant tornados likely. last time we saw this was two years ago. that easter outbreak of ef-3 and 4 tornados so we're going to be watching that very closely and wednesday it moves into the southeast for another 25 million people with damaging wind, hail. and 12 million people with flood watches through the lower gulf as storm systems start to develop. three factors here strong upper air disturbance intersecting low level and mid-level jet streams. and moisture out of gulf heavy snow in the southern rockies. tomorrow, multiple rounds of severe weather flood risk from louisiana into alabama. wednesday the storms from florida to the mid atlantic with heavy rain moving into the northeast. the heaviest down through the lower gulf coast, upwards of six inches or more we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds

saturday in the town of dumas, about 90 miles south of little rock police say two individuals were involved in the gun fight. all of the victims were bystanders just caught in the cross-fire at least six children among the injured. the search for both suspects under way. health experts are warning a highly contagious covid variant, ba.2 could be leading to an uptick in cases here in the u.s. dr. anthony fauci says the latest variant appears more transmissible but not more severe health officials continue to suppress vaccines and boosters are the best ways to prevent serious illness from the virus. >> the cargo ship that got stuck in chegs chesapeake bay last week is not going anywhere any time soon. the ironically named ever forward ran aground off the coast of maryland eight days ago.

also on the women's side, 10th seeded creighton getting by iowa but one of the lasting images of the tournament so far. this emotional hug michigan wolf reasons coach juwan howard consoling an opposing player on tennessee after a loss you may recall a few weeks ago coach howard was suspended for getting into a physical altercation with another coach his son played aau basketball with that tennessee volunteers player coach k. got his 1200 victory but also on 99 ncaa victories. if they beat texas tech this week, that could make it an even 100. i don't know if there are national duke fans everywhere rooting just for the blue devils everyone should be feeling good about coach k. >> sorry, that record cannot be disputed

some people get death threats that i know on the team, and i'm trying to text my mom and that's the first thing i see, and you can't worry about it too much, because you have an exam the next day, and you have that for weeks or months and by the end of the semester, you are like la is reaping right now -- you are like what is happening right now? and it just breaks my hard while i was going through my therapy i was seeing stories of miss americas and athletes all over the board and i just kept thinking if somebody would say something. and i'm just really grateful that i was able to have received the care and love and affection that i did so that i could >> what's really great about this story harry, is that you are here and we'd be covering the story and we have so many times before without you being here you would have been reduced to being initials on the back of the buckeye helmet and you were okay with that at the time but you're not and you're here. but people watching and who will see this, there are so many millions of people suffering in silence. >> yeah.

12 million people impacted flash flood watches in the lower mississippi river valley and we're already starting to see that moisture stream up from the gulf low level jet, and a strong upper level low. and that's combining, we've got 22 million people at risk today, of damaging hail, we've got tornadoes possible, and lasting on into tonight. which of course will be nocturnal tornado, the worst possible, wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour. as we move into moderate risk tomorrow, and 9 million people, significant tornadoes likely, especially wind gusts of 60 miles per hour or more. and then wednesday, 25 million people at risk, making their way from the panhandle of florida all the way to the mid-atlantic states. again, wind gusts, damaging hail, and tornadoes all possible. so we'll be watching that very closely. for today, gorgeous day, the eastern third of the u.s. looking great. those severe storms start firing up. we have snow in the rockies, as well, to talk about and strong winds firing up through southern california. we'll be watching that.

good morning. it's 8:26. i'm kris sanchez. firefighters are trying to figure out what started an early morning house fire in san leandro. the alameda county fire department posted this video. you can see the fire raging there. just before 3:00 this morning along garcia avenue near east 14th street. firefighters say two people made it out safely. there were no injuries. also starting today, masks outdoors will be optional for students and teachers in oakland schools. the district is still considering loosening its indoor restrictions starting next

thank you so much. we don't pay enough attention. i know when i'm off and i just tribute it, attribute it to being fatigued, or you're tired or not feeling well. >> absolutely. so when we are thinking about gut health we're really talking about whole body health. impacts everything >> everything. >> every part of our body. and sometimes we don't pay attention and discount it or write it off. >> or we think we're made that way. like that's just something i have to deal with. warning signs you may have issues you need to take care of. so what are those three? >> three warning signs that may show up. gas or bloating that is worsening. that might be something we see but when thinking about ingredients for a healthy gut, it is really whole both health it's ecosystem your immune system, blood pressure your hormones. your entire central nervous system it affects all of this even your blood pressure and

your blood sugars. >> everything is affected by your gut health. >> everything. >> so when do i think i have a problem? how do i know if there is an issue with it? >> that's when we're thinking, okay, gas or bloating. maybe you already had gas or bloating but it is excessive and that might be a reason why you gut needs a little bit of extra support. another reason that might show up is fatigue. it is really interesting you mentioned that and there are all of these research studies looking at actually the bacteria in the gut and being off balance. more bad bugs than we want for people who have chronic fatigue. and the other thing is allergies. so maybe you had allergies but they are worsening and you have new allergies. same thing like fatigue. different gut bacteria. >> do you go to your doctor and say hey can i check these t. >> absolutely. >> let's talk about nutrition. >> at the top of the list is always fiber

in general a minimum of 25 -- >> what would that be the equivalent of. >> a cup of quinoa, or if you want to get fancy here like bran cereal that can show up >> what's your go-to if you wanted fiber quick and right now what would be the thing you would grab >> i tell people look for pre biotic fiber all of these things are really wonderful. especially when thinking about crowding out that bad bacteria >> what about yogurt is that? blueberries. beans. cacao. dark chocolate all of these things are really wonderful, especially when you're thinking about crowding out that bad bacteria. >> okay. what about yogurt? >> yogurt is a propbiotic that's fantastic and you want all of these things and put it together. we do a little bit of yogurt, with the nuts and berries and caco on top.

>> perfect, on top >>ple who carry that big jug around. >> hydration is important for every single thing in the body it helps form saliva, that is step one that is interrupted so it is really important for breaking down, our whole digestive process, as well as for the brain, making neurotransmitters and loerms so this is why i say you want a minimum of two liters of water every day. if you can get more, excellent g go for it. >> exercise is big what can we do to improve gut health with exercise. >> when we move that helps to get your digestive system moving walking, lifting weights whatever the person can engage in on a regular and consistent basis. >> doesn't have to be super strenuous. >> no, you don't have to go out and be pushing tires and hammers. >> i think lot of times people think i have a gut problem i'll take a nexium or whatever pills for stomach stuff. but really there may be a mental health thing here.
