thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. you can watch us live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. let's look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has a look at our day. >> air-conditioning on today, because it's going to be very warm this afternoon. right now we're starting out with our natural air-conditioning. we're seeing temperatures mainly in the low 50s for much of the bay area. check out calistoga, upper 60s. winds will higher and it's keeping temperatures up. but then as we compare where we're headed for today and the record high temperature, most likely we're going to set a record in santa rosa, livermore. san francisco is not going to most likely set a record. in oakland today we're going to be close, while san jose will also be close to that record high. so near record highs today. we'll talk about that, as well as what's ahead in our forecast coming up in a few minutes.

happening now, parts of texas cleaning up this morning after severe storms spawned a string of tornados. storm chasers captured this video of one believed to be about 30 tornadoes. some caused extensive damage. take a look at this. look at the force of it. that's a possible tornado passing through an automobile garage. so far, there are no reports of anyone being injured by the severe weather. the violence in ukraine not letting up at this hour. the catastrophic damage continues to show the reality of russia's aggression as its military continues its attacks. we're seeing new video out of mariupol. this is one of the hardest-hit cities since the war began. it shows huge explosions, factories destroyed by multiple russian strikes. president biden warning that

president vladimir putin could use chemical weapons in ukraine as sanctions mount against russia. the u.n. now says more than 3.5 million u cranes have left the country. more than 2 million are seeking refuge in neighboring poland. happening today, open statements in the second criminal trial tied to the downfall of theranos are set to start. former executive sunny balwani facing the same charges as liz meth holmes. the start of the trial was delayed last week after a potential covid exposure involving a juror. balwani faces multiple fraud charges. holmes was convicted on 4 of 11 charges in january. she's scheduled to be sentenced in late september. she's currently free on bond. well, as gas prices keep rising, some people are going to extreme lengths to try to fill up their tanks.

in the east bay one man came face to face with someone he believed was trying to steal his gas. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd takes us through the awkward encounter. you know what? we're going to work on getting that package. oh, here it is. >> reporter: an apology did not stop him from recording a man trying to siphon gas from his suv. >> i just ran out of gas. i was going to get enough to go to the gas station. >> so you were going to take mine? >> i'm sorry, bro. i'm serious, i'm sorry. >> reporter: apology not accepted. he couldn't believe what he was recording. >> he obviously didn't see that i was sitting in the driver's seat of my car, so i pulled my camera out to record in case he tried to act crazy or something. >> reporter: these are crazy times, especially in california. the golden state hitting another

record high, a gallon of regular gasoline averaging $5.86. it's even higher at some bay area gas stations. >> it's horrible. how do people drive back and forth to work and feed our kids and pay our mortgages? >> reporter: police say people are taking desperate measures. i did reach out to the sheriff's department and they told me this type of crime is on the rise. although it is difficult to siphon gas in the newer cars, so gas thieves are puncturing a hole in the actual tank and letting the gas flow into a container. in this case, police were called but he decided not to press charges. >> they said, you know, what do you want to happen to this guy, and i said, just basically let him know he can't do this and this is how you get yourself in trouble. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." >> as you heard, no charges will

be filed. we've reached out to san ramon police to confirm the details but have not heard back. moving you forward this morning, the state will no longer require people to show proof of vaccination at mega events starting april 1st. it appears that every bay area county following suit here. that means soon no vaccination cards necessary at warriors games, shark games or concerts. now, the new guidelines apply to all mega events, the yut door events with more than 1,000 people -- or indoor events with more than 1,000 people and outdoor events with more than 10,000 people. south bay leaders today will debate a plan to boost affordable housing options. santa clara county supervisors will vote on whether to buy four parcels to build affordable housing. the proposed project would provide 324 new homes and the land located in san jose, santa clara and morgan hills. leaders believe it would offer new hope for people hoping to own a new home.

remaining silent on florida's don't guy gay law. he was speaking yesterday at a virtual town hall which comes amid internal strife at disney. employees are planning a day-long walkout for today. disney says senior executives will conduct a global listening tour and meet with employees in the u.s. and internationally. disney is also creating a task force to develop a plan to ensure the company is a force for good for lgbtq+ communities. fedex is working on a new feature calls cross track for its mobile app. tech crunch reports it's testing the option to track deliveries from other devices so users can do it all in one app. it would potentially compete with the shop app which lets users track shipments from various services. the user receives important tracking information without the hassle of checking multiple apps. marcus and laura, back to you. >> got to see when my shoes are

nice and clear this morning on the road and in the sky, too. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring what we can expect from the temperatures today. how is it shaping up today? >> you may need to dig around in the closet a little more this morning and find shorts and a t-shirt for later today. our temperatures are everywhere. vacaville, it's 71, and then it's 54 in concord and 46 in san martin. so these temperatures are all over the place and that's what we'll see going into this afternoon. let's get a look at our afternoon high. for san jose, reaching 81 degrees. this is the second full day of spring. it's not supposed to be this warm. we are going to see another spike in temperatures for tomorrow as well. but we're heading up to 84 degrees in concord, 78 in hayward and 77 in san mateo. san francisco in the low 70s today. downtown reaching 73 degrees and 81 in novato. 85 in ukiah and in napa.

if you're going to be out there enjoying all of what spring has to offer, of course there is a lot of tree pollen in the air. it's mainly oak, sycamore and mulberry pollen. and this wind is really blowing the pollen around, so it's going to stay gusty today. through 9:00 we're seeing the north bay winds at 25 to 35 miles per hour and then gradually starting to relax as we go into this afternoon and this evening. but it's going to be windy and warm today. and it's all because we have this storm system well to the north of us. all of that rain across the pacific northwest and high pressure over the bay area, that's creating this pressure gradient and these high winds. it does stay dry and it looks like it keeps our sunday rain chances at bay and we're hoping for some of those showers to move in by next week. this is kind of the pattern we've seen. as the event gets closer it dries up or heads farther north. but our temperature is also going up and down.

for concord, in the mid-80s today. a little cooler tomorrow and mild for the start of the weekend. by the cold front moving in on sunday, we could see a significant cooldown and we'll stay there for a few days. we'll keep the rain chances in the forecast, but in the near term it's dry, warm temperatures reaching into the low 80s, mid-80s, then we're back to the low 70s by the end of the week. let's get you out the door for the morning commute. a live look outside in oakland, checking out the east bay. we do have a smooth flow of traffic. around the bay area it's been treat good, except for heading on 101 southbound, just south of palo alto, heading into san jose. we're seeing a little bit more traffic there. but as far as driving across the dumbarton or san mateo bridges, it is looking good. the drive times are all still green, as it is early in the morning. we'll see how it progresses as we go into today. we'll have another update on weather and traffic in a few minutes. >> thanks so much.

developing for you this morning, investigators are still trying to determine why a boeing 737 passenger jet plunged from the sky yesterday in china. it's a story we first brought you as breaking news on "today in the bay." the china eastern airlines plane was carrying 132 people on board when it went down on a mountainside. this is in southeastern china. there's no reports of any survivors. investigators are combing through the wreckage and they're faced with a difficult situation with the terrain being tough, as well as poor weather. it's not clear if the plane's black box survived the crash. one aviation expert believes it will take time to determine what happened. >> this is an extremely big mystery. this airplane has no history of doing anything like this. >> tom costello is following this investigation and he'll have more for us later this morning on the "today" show right after "today in the bay" at 7:00. one of the couples who served prison time for the

college administrations scandal just put their home on the market. the home is listed for just under $15.5 million. the couple bought the home in 2005 for about $7.5 million. man well hernandez spent six months in prison. they were found guilty of bribing a coach and paying close to half a million to rig entrance exams for their daughter. a former key member of google's diversity team responsible for recruiting hundreds of minority candidates is suing the tech giant for discrimination. the former employee says not only did google discriminate based on race, but punished anyone who pointed it out. >> reporter: the lawsuit filed by former employee spells out what accusers say is a toxic environment at google, alleging they fostered a bias culture

where black employees are denied promotions and paid less than other employees of equal experience and qualifications. >> they're standing up for minorities who don't have a voice. >> reporter: civil rights attorney ben crump filed the suit. he says his clients' dream jobs at google became nightmares. >> when they raised awareness about the racist, toxic culture, google did not retaliate against the racist culture, but they retaliated against these victims. >> reporter: april curley joined google in 2014 and claims she was stuck in an entry level job for six years with no realistic chance for promotion. when she began speaking out about what she claims are the racial discriminatory policies, she said the company tried to silence her. >> when their strategy of trying to silence me didn't work, they reverted to termination during a

we're almost at the end of the road for an overhaul that's tied up san francisco traffic for six years. the van ness improvement project was green lighted in 2016 and was such a complex project it got its own website. the original completion date was in mid-2020, however covid intervened and work crews, well, they joked that they actually found pandora's box once they

dug underground into a tangle of sewar pipes and gas lines. the completion is set for next month when a redesigned van ness that has landscaped islands and brighter lighting. money, money. they're earning 50 bucks each as part of the district's savings program. it's part of a new initiative named opportunity l.a. more than 44,000 first grade students will automatically receive a savings account with $50 of an initial deposit. it was actually made possible and funded by l.a. county, the city of l.a. and lausd. the account is available for students and parents to make deposits. students will be able to withdraw from the account once they turn 18. i love that. >> good opportunity for them.
