minutes. back to you. and we are going to be seeing overall a pretty good traffic commute so far. we had a couple of spots that showed some slowing from an earlier crash along northbound 880. you could see it around industrial parkway. it looks like it's cleared out. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, we've got no metering lights on just yet. bridge drive times, westbound 580 toward the richmond bridge about eight minutes, westbound 80 toward the bay bridge, nine minutes. i'll be back with traffic in a few minutes. convicted killer scott peterson returns to a redwood city courtroom as the fight for a new trial continues. the judge holding an evidentiary hearing which should wrap up today. yesterday a police clerk testified to police. this was about involving that

juror, rochelle nice, to focus peterson's jury misconduct claim. in 2001 a report identified her as the victim in a crime which peterson's team claims she never disclosed on her jury questionnaire. peterson's team also wants filmmaker anderson to testify. she once interviewed nice for a documentary called "the murder of laci peterson". >> she wanted to assert her rights under the california constitution and the first amendment not to be forced to testify here because she is a journalist and journalists have quite important rights that protect them from being burdened and called as witnesses on a regular basis. >> now, peterson's legal team is attempting to show nice lied her way onto the jury. if the judge agrees, it could lead to a new trial. the russian invasion of ukraine entering its fifth week and president biden now turns his attention to poland, where he's going after the emergency nato summit in brussels.

the president is expected to meet with ukrainian refugees in warsaw. it follows a white house pledge to welcome 100,000 displaced ukrainians into the united states. he delivered that promise during yesterday's emergency summit where he joined other european leaders in pledging unity in the fight against russia. the president also announced new sanctions on 400 russians, many of them elite lawmakers. nato leaders plan to double the military presence in member nations near ukraine. all this amidst concern russian president vladimir putin could turn to chemical weapons. >> putin was banking on nato being split. my earlier conversations with him in december and early january, it was clear to me he didn't think we could sustain this cohesion. nato has never, never been more united than it is today. putin is getting exactly the opposite of what he intended to have as a consequence of going into ukraine.

>> president biden reinforced his belief putin is committing war crimes and he supports removing russia from the g20 group of nations. is all of this more than just tough talk from president biden, and what happens next? we spoke with dr. katherine stoner, director of stanford's center on democracy. >> i think the most important thing biden was doing was to do a check-in face-to-face with our european and nato allies, to get support for more sanctions, to make sure that the sanctions regime is airtight, and biden did get some promises on checking with one another on the implementation of the sanctions regime, and then i think, also, a discussion on what the threshold would be for introducing more involvement in this conflict. 4:35, and the crisis in ukraine amplifying problems

right here in the u.s., especially when it comes to inflation and the rising costs will not be going away any time soon. so the numbers show just how much we're paying for, among other things, housing, and how things got so expensive. our business and tech reporter explains what those trying to make it in the bay can expect. >> reporter: well, first off, we are in inflationary times. on the one hand, more people have jobs, at higher salaries. in fact, first-time unemployment claims came in today at the lowest level in 52 years. on the other hand, just about everything around us costs more, and that's putting a lot of pressure on consumers. and we notice it at the store. compare what it costs to buy what's in this cart now to just a little bit ago. >> i probably spent $50 more on a shopping trip than we did a few months ago. >> silicon valley, santa clara county, you know, a lot of

people are doing pretty well out here, but, you know, i feel like everyone feels it, for sure. >> reporter: we caught up with business professor caroline chen right after shopping. >> i mean, when have i ever paid 9 for a pint of blueberries? >> reporter: it's been a long time since we paid as much to get gas to go to the store or work or vacation. >> every time i go to the pump it's like $150 to fill up the car. >> reporter: higher costs, plus supply chain issues have ganged up to raise prices across the board. >> we start, maybe, from where the farmers are, it's water that much more expensive, fertilizer is that much more expensive, and then you just keep passing along those increased costs, until it hits the end consumer. >> reporter: and housing, the bay area still leads the nation when it comes to what we pay for rent. this is the one-bedroom average, and what we're hoping to some

day pay to actually own a home. professor chen says gas prices are likely to drop soon. grocery prices, not so likely because of supply chain and inflationary concerns. and as for bay area housing, as we've seen, the only thing that will take those down would be a pretty big tech tumble. scott budman, "today in the bay." new this morning, the shakeup continues at the top of cal state university leadership. trustees appointed a new interim chancellor. she's a former cal state north ridge president and she'll assume the chancellor position until may of next year when it's hoped a new permanent leader can be appointed. in february, former chancellor joseph castro abruptly resigned following his mishandling of sexual conduct allegations. how long has it been since you've been to the doctor? many have put it off because of the pandemic. next in "today in the bay," the all-new tool from a bay area tech giant that could help close

nearly 2%. the s&p and nasdaq are on track for a positive week. in focus today, reports on consumer sentiment and pending home sales. google is adding available doctors' appointments to search results. it's working with minute clinic at cvs and other appointment schedulers during the initial rollout. if you search for a doctor or health provider, you'll see what types of appointments are available and the earliest date, and it will then direct you to a third-party site to make the appointment. apple is reportedly working on selling iphones and ipads as part of a subscription service which could arrive next year. it would fit into apple's push toward subscriptions for nearly everything. it already offers services such as apple music and tv plus for a monthly or annual fee. bloomberg reports the monthly charge for devices wouldn't simply be the price of the iphone or ipad divided by 12 or

look at the bay bridge toll plaza. folks up and out the door, maybe to get a jump on their weekend, perhaps? start early, end early, maybe. we're going to take a look at the morning commute. vianey is in for mike this morning. but rob is in for kari with a look at the forecast. >> you're going to want to factor some of your outdoor plans i think more for saturday, as rain chances make a comeback. this morning you've got clouds in san jose, misty skies in a few spots. 51 degrees. we have 48 degrees in dublin. southwest wind at 7 miles per hour, looking at 70s later on in the tri-valley and more clouds over walnut creek at 47. and closer to san francisco this morning, maybe a little bit of a drizzle storm around the bay bridge and also across the san mateo bridge. you might run into misty skies. 40s to start the morning. around the bay, the low clouds

may try to linger a little bit. we'll see more clearing skies around midday and then hazy sunshine and a spread of temperatures from mid-60s from san francisco to oakland and near 71 by 3:00 in the afternoon. and you can see toward the tri-valley, santa rosa and areas south climbing into the mid-70s. get ready for big changes this weekend. sunday we finally have a chance of seeing some rain, and the peak of the rain will probably come in sunday night. the hour-by-hour outlook, this is sunday, and towards the evening we'll begin to see a chance of rain on the increase, right around sunset. peak rain as things look right now should be sunday night, perhaps into your monday morning commute. we'll transition from rain to scattered showers as we get into the beginning of next week. this is a welcome sight when it comes to fire danger and obviously the drought conditions we're having across california. we may end up seeing some areas, especially in the santa cruz mountains, and the north bay coastal mountains, could be

looking at maybe a half inch of rain. some welcome news, maybe not so much for your late sunday weekend plans, but we certainly need rain. there's the change in the forecast. most of the rain will be falling for sunday evening into early monday morning. cooler temperatures and rebounding back to the mid-70s by the middle of next week. with another check of your friday morning commute, here is vianey. >> i'm off on monday and love sleeping in on a rainy day. we are going to be seeing a typical friday light commute, but you might run into a couple of fender-benders. this is 880 industrial, you could see some residual traffic left over from an overnight crash. south bay drive times from northbound 101, highway 85, about 18 minutes. northbound 280 from 101 to 85 about seven minutes. and a live look in oakland, you can see this tends to get really busy really fast. 4:50 right now and this is what it looks like. there are no crashes being reported along the stretch. bay bridge toll plaza as you

approach the toll plaza, you can see no metering lights on and this is pretty typical for a friday morning. not too bad on the roads. i'll have another update coming up in a few minutes. 4:50 right now, and a warning this morning for every pg&e customer. scammers have already taken tens of thousands of dollars from customers. this is in what's become a very effective phone scam. the calls, which look like they are coming directly from the utility company, warn that the customer's power could be shut off in a matter of minutes unless they pay immediately. we have details on this. >> reporter: it starts with a call from what looks like the actual pg&e customer service number, warning that your power will be cut off in 15 minutes if you don't pay. you're asked to press one to speak to a live person and pay. >> scammers are very convincing. their technology allows them to spoof customers. they'll use numbers that are identical to pg&e. >> reporter: pg&e says more than

1,000 customers were scammed like this in january alone, milking them of more than $65,000. the utility believes the crooks are not only after money, but also personal information, so they can steal the customer's tax refunds as well. >> we will never threaten to disconnect your service and we will never demand immediate payment. >> reporter: pg&e says customers who fall behind are instead put on a monthly payment plan they can afford. they say that option became especially popular during the pandemic, when the growing number of customers couldn't afford the full payment. people we spoke with say the phony calls and emails aren't limited to pg&e. >> i've gotten netflix, and a couple of others, but instead of clicking those links, i call the companies that i do business with and i ask them, did you send me a link. >> reporter: pg&e says it's working with the fbi to try to track down those responsible and they say anyone can be a target, and that included me. i got one of those calls and was

connected to a live person, but the moment i told them that i was recording the call, they immediately hung up. >> do not fall for it. it's a scammer. >> reporter: "today in the bay." a big loss for the san francisco zoo. one of its oldest tigers has died. leanne, a sumatran tiger died yesterday at the age of 18. zoo keepers say they outlived her life expectancy. she was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. this morning as gas prices rise, many are crossing the border to fill up their gas tanks. it's happening as californians are heading to mexico to buy gas. so according to the "l.a. times." gas $2 less than it is here in california. so many people near the border are heading south to fill up, some tijuana gas stations are

putting up signs that say cheaper than in the u.s. so when the war in ukraine began, the mexican government vowed to keep gas prices low. they're providing subsidies to oil companies and refineries to make that happen. coming up next on "today in the bay," at 4:54, two years later, first castle is set to reopen for the first time since the pandemic. coming up next, we're going to tell you when you can go back inside the historic place and the changes that you can also expect to see. happening now, there's new hope for those who are striking at the chevron refinery in richmond. the union and chevron plan to meet monday for the first time since the strike began. steelworkers walked off the job. they're demanding higher wages. the union spokesperson says they're hopeful they can reach a deal. we'll be right back.

happening today, house speaker nancy pelosi celebrates women's history month right here in her own back yard. unevent at the library branch will honor this year's american women quarters program. the next three years honor notable american women. poet angelo is on the first quarter. barbara lee will also attend. after being closed for two years, hurst castle is reopening. they will welcome visitors on may 11th. they were closed for two years because of the pandemic and then severe rainstorms damaged the road to the castle in early 2021. but the down time allowed them
