million have been displaced. the actual numbers are likely much higher. and just in to our newsroom, the u.s. and eu are creating a joint task force to reduce europe's dependence on russian fuels. in the meantime, later today president biden will get a first hand look at the impact this war is having on ukrainian families. "today in the bay's" brie jackson joins us live from washington, d.c. the president will be in poland today? >> reporter: good morning, laura, that's right. the president's trip to poland is focused on the humanitarian crisis. the u.s. is promising to provide more financial help and to welcome nearly 100,000 ukrainian refugees. president biden traveling to poland this morning, after a series of high stakes meetings in brussels. >> the american people would not be part of subsidizing putin's brutal unjustified war against the people of ukraine. >> reporter: the president and european leaders projecting

footing. >> reporter: the violence has triggered europe's largest refugee crisis since world war ii. more than 2 million ukrainians fled to poland. and the u.s. is pledging more than $11 billion over five years to help address food security, global food security, an issue impacted by russia's invasion of ukraine. >> so much going on to keep track of. thank you so much. brie. and that crisis in ukraine making it more difficult for people to make it in the bay. some of the inflation now tied to the war is driving up housing costs. thumb per puts the average rent for a one bedroom apartment in san jose at more than $2,400. in san francisco, it is more than $2,900. the same rising costs also being felt at the gas pump and grocery store. no doubt impacting your bottom line. experts say higher costs, plus supply chain issues, are ganging up.

this is to raise prices across the board. >> you start maybe from where the farmers are, it's water that's much more expensive, fertilizer, et cetera, et cetera, and then you just keep passing along those increased costs until it hits the end consumer. >> there is some good news here. experts believe gas prices may start to decline soon. but grocery prices will probably stay high. this is due to higher salaries and supply concerns, and barring a technology crash, silicon valley housing costs are not likely to decline. a follow-up in a heartbreaking plea from the parents of a young teenager struck and killed while riding his bike to school. >> if we can stop another family feeling what we're feeling right now, just please, just put up a sign, something. this should have been done a long time ago. >> you can hear the anguish and heartache in her voice.

mountain view council members met last night to discuss improving road safety. the 13-year-old's mother says more needs to be done to slow down traffic in the area where a truck recently hit her son. andre died last week at the corner of el camino real and grant road. council members will meet again next month to discuss possible changes. happening today, convicted killer scott peterson returns to a san mateo countercourtroom for a second day of an everybody denchry ree hearing. kris sanchez is live with a look at where the case stands. >> reporter: this is all about whether scott peterson was convicted by a jury that included a woman who allegedly lied in order to be on that jury. day one was yesterday as scott peterson sat in the court. no cameras were allowed, but we have been monitoring that hearing in person and via an audio feed. the judge heard from two

witnesses related to juror rochelle nice. one was an east palo alto police clerk who testified that back in 2001 that juror was herself a victim of domestic violence while she was pregnant. peterson's lawyer says she did not disclose that before being seated on the jury. the court was also trying to decide whether a documentary filmmaker could be called to testify. >> she wanted to assert her rights under the california constitution and the first amendment, not to be forced to testify here. because she is a journalist and journalists have really quite important rights that protect them from being burdened and called as witnesses on a regular basis. >> reporter: now, if the judge found that that juror should not have been on that jury, she could toss the case and along with it the guilty verdict and scott peterson would get a new

millions on the project. the terminal is closer to the runway than its current terminal 2 location and that will save fuel. the author of the book the end of policing says sales of his books rocketed upwards after texas senator ted cruz held it up at the supreme court hearings earlier this week. cruz was trying to criticize the book found in the school library. the author, alex vitale, went on twitter to thank cruz for the shout-out. two people who used to work as moderators on tiktok are suing the company says they say they saw awful things as part of their job. obviously, that's what content moderators do. they say tiktok did not provide sufficient mental health counseling and other support. a lot of tiktok is very innocent stuff. influencers, people who enthusiastically show you new products, they get paid to do so sometimes, and if they do, they're supposed to tell you that. consumer analysts say tiktok is

once again, it will be morgan hill, fairfield up toward santa rosa. the warmest spots today climbing into the 70s. big changes coming this weekend, saturday high clouds. by sunset on sunday, will bring rain into central and southern c down i-5 or 101 down to santa barbara, this will be impactle. for the bay area, as we head into sunday morning is when we think we'll begin to see rain in pick up. by monday we transition to scattered showers. you can see some of the coastal mountains, santa cruz and north bay hills could get as much as 1/2 inch of rain, a lot coming down sunday night before you wake up monday morning. san francisco, you see the rain chances into monday, similar spread of conditions for our inland areas, 60s to start the week. then trending warmer and dry approaching tuesday and wednesday. here is vianey.

>> thank you very much, rob. we have breaking news overnight in florida where a teenager is dead after falling from a free-fall ride at orlando's icon amusement park. it happened late last night. witnesses say the victim slipped from his seat and the ride dropped from it's 430-foot tower. the company that owns the ride is now working closely with authorities to try to figure out what happened. the ride will be closed indefinitely. nbc news has reached out to icon park for comment, but so far has not received a response. very sad news there. developing for you this morning, authorities in the central valley believe a man wanted for the murder of an 8-year-old girl may be somewhere in the bay area. >> a reward is being offered, i understand, rob. >> reporter: correct, crime stoppers is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading

to arrest of this man. his name is dhante jackson, wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend's daughter, sophia mason. mason, 8 years old, was found dead at a home in merced earlier this month. sophia's mother, samantha johnson, has been charged with her daughter's murder and is in jail. sophia's body was found and family members said she had not seen her since december. her family is grateful a reward is being offered and they hope merced police are able to track down dhante jackson. >> this guy is dangerous and who knows if he's armed and who else he has hurt. we just want to get him off the streets and in jail as soon as possible. >> reporter: merced police believe dhante jackson is in the bay area. according to the reward poster, he has family here, he has

worked here and has been known to hang out in the east and south bay. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they find answers soon. developing this morning, president biden traveling to poland following a show of unity with nato leaders. he's expected to meet with u.s. troops and visit refugees who have escaped the fighting in ukraine. the president will also meet with poland's president to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis. so far, more than 3.5 million people have fled ukraine. other developments for you this morning, ukrainian forces have reclaimed more territory, and they continue to push russian forces away from the capital of kyiv. russia and ukraine have also carried out their first prisoner swap since the war began. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel reports from ukraine, all eyes will again be on biden today. >> reporter: as president biden continues to rally nato leaders and they promise support for ukraine, many in this country

>> wow. no snow. you can still go skiing, though. >> don't expect any snow to start falling. >> not much for the weekend, but sunday night and monday morning we might begin to see changes toward the sierra. right now we've got misty skies for your morning commute. you're seeing 40s to begin your day and around lunchtime we should see temperatures in the mid-60s in san jose. valleys climbing into the low to mid-70s. we should see a similar forecast for your saturdays, and then sunday things begin to change. temperatures cooling down, winds picking up, and toward the end of the day we'll begin to see rain making a comeback around the bay area. we might even see a little snow across the sierra. so for late sunday by the evening we're beginning to see light rain approaching the coast and the peak of the heavier rain could be, especially for the santa cruz mountains and north bay hills around 11:00 sunday night before sunrise monday, and then we transition to scattered

showers and cooler temperatures into the beginning of next week, before we warm up again approaching the middle of next week. so there you go, weekend plans include some clouds for saturday, mild temperatures, and then some rain by the time we head toward sunset on sunday. more showers monday and then clearing and back into the 70s toward the middle of next week. >> we're still pretty light when it comes to the commute. a quick look right now at the speed sensors, a little bit of slowing along 101 in both directions, but it looks like it's just from building traffic. no accidents to report. during the next couple of hours we will see an increase in traffic, but i do want to give you a heads-up. you know march madness is going on. if you're going to be heading to the chase center for the tournament, especially heading into the weekend, keep in mind they have several closures right around that area, warriors way tends to get blocked off, they have special pricing on parking and all of that. but also the impacts this could have will include 280.

280 especially heading into the city gets heavily impacted whenever there's any sort of game, really. but march madness will definitely do that. if you're going to be heading toward the bridges, keep that in mind as well, also as you head back home. a great option for you is going to be public transportation. it is recommended that you go ahead and do that. you don't have to worry about paying crazy parking prices. make sure to check out their website. they do offer special routes and some even offer locations where you can take a little shuttle from some of these metro locations, and also b.a.r.t. straight to the chase center, so you don't have to worry about that aspect of it, either. really just a great option overall. i'm a pretty big fan of public transportation when i have to get to a concert and things like that. i'll send it back to you. sky high gas prices driving some people to sdplit new measures. you won't believe lengths people are going to just to find

recused the office due to ties to the case. many are crossing the border to fill up their tanks, as californians are heading to mexico to buy gas. according to "l.a. times," gas is tijuana is almost $2 less than california. some tijuana gas stations are putting up signs that say cheaper than in the usa. when the war in ukraine began, the mexican government vowed to keep gas prices low. they're providing subsidies to mexican oil companies and refineries to make that happen. 5:43 right now. president biden is in poland today, where he will meet with nato soldiers and ukrainian refugees. >> scott, the geography is important. >> poland is on the eastern edge of nato. if there's going to be a fight between the west and russia, it's going to be in poland. and the soldiers who president biden meets with today are going to be some of the troops to fight it. you can also call it kind of a

of alleging his colluded with russia. he says he did not and the allegations hurt him financially. it's really difficult to prove that kind of damage arising during an election. it will be a tough suit for him to win. also a good opportunity to extinguish gas lighting about what mueller said. trump said he was exonerated and mueller's report found the russians did help the trump campaign. about collusion, mueller said we didn't address collusion, which is not a legal term. rather, we focused on whether the evidence was sufficient to charge any member of the campaign with taking part in a criminal conspiracy. it was not. new focus on the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. she fired off text messages to trump's chief of staff after the election of 2020, including the january 6th attacks, encouraging mark meadows to help overturn the election. the text messages have been

the world. i had to do a little bit of research. what i found, aaa ipa means it's higher in alcohol and it has a lot of hops. the waiting for this release has been happening for years and it attracts thousands here at the brew pubs in downtown santa rosa, as well as the windsor location. the in-person release was canceled 2021 as a result of the pandemic, and the brewery really had to limit the online sales for customers this year. but we are here in person, folks are waiting. you see some folks even playing cornhole. i don't know if you call it cornhole or bags in california. we call it cornhole in ohio. making a party of it. now, the doors open at 11:00. it's going to be a very methodle way to purchase your items. it is no joke out here and folks really have been waiting for hours just to get their hands on
