to talk about the forecast. >> we're going to have changes coming up midway through the weekend. right now it's drizzle and misty skies around the bay bridge this morning and eventually low clouds will start to break up as we head toward the afternoon. hazy sunshine inland and a nice spread of temperatures with low 70s around san jose, 66 in oakland, and speaking of the weekend forecast, tomorrow looks pretty good. then by sunday rain making a comeback. we'll have a closer look at that hour-by-hour and our full forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. i'll tell you what we're expecting for the sunday storm and as we head into next week. the war in ukraine entering its fifth week. new video shows the damage left behind from russian air strikes in mariupol. at least 1,000 civilians have died and more than 10 million have been displaced, but the actual numbers are likely much higher. just into our newsroom, the u.s. and eu are creating a joint task

force to reduce europe's dependence on russian fuel. in the meantime, later today, president biden will get a firsthand look at the impact this war is having on ukrainian families. "today in the bay's" brie jackson is live in washington, and, brie, the president, i understand, will be in poland today. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that's exactly right. and the focus while president biden is in poland is on the humanitarian crisis. the u.s. is vowing to provide more financial aid to poland and to take in nearly 100,000 ukrainian refugees. president biden traveling to poland this morning, after a series of high stakes meetings in brussels. >> the american people would not be part of subsidizing putin's brutal unjustified war against the people in ukraine. >> reporter: the president and european leaders projecting unity against russia's attacks on ukraine, including possible

chemical attacks, and warning russian president vladimir putin -- >> we would respond, we would respond if he uses it, the nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use. >> reporter: in a video message, ukraine's president accused nato leaders of failing to save lives, pressing them to do more. >> nato allies are providing significant support to ukraine and their armed forces, with advanced air defense systems, with anti-tank weapons. >> reporter: world leaders unveiled new sanctions aimed at further crippling russia's economy. >> sanctions against russia have been extraordinary and exceptional. >> reporter: president biden also pushing back against criticism that sanctions have failed to stop russian aggression. >> i know that eliminating russian gas will have costs for europe, but it's not only the right thing to do from a moral standpoint, it's going to put us on a much stronger strategic footing. >> reporter: the violence has triggered europe's largest refugee crisis since world war

ii. more than 2 million ukrainians fled to poland, where president biden will be able to see the scale of the refugee crisis firsthand. and president biden will meet with refugees while in poland on saturday, before delivering remarks, or at least what the white house is calling a major address. laura? >> we'll continue to follow that. thank you very much, brie. 6:04 and happening today, convicted killer scott peterson returns to a san mateo county courtroom for the second day of its evidentiary hearing. the legal team is trying to convince the judge the first trial was unfair. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live this morning with a look at where the case stands. >> reporter: this is really all about the question of whether scott peterson was convicted by a jury that had a woman who allegedly lied in order to get onto that jury, perhaps to seek a conviction. now, no cameras were allowed in

court as scott peterson was there for day one of this evidentiary hearing. we do know that there were two witnesses that were questioned, one was an east palo alto police clerk who testified that back in 2001 that juror, rochelle nice, was herself a victim of domestic violence while she was pregnant. peterson's lawyer says she did not disclose that. the court was also trying to decide whether a documentary filmmaker could be compelled to testify about interviewing the same juror for a documentary "the murder of laci peterson". >> she wanted to assert her rights under the california constitution and the first amendment not to be forced to testify here, because she is a journalist and journalists have really quite important rights that protect them from being burdened and called as witnesses on a regular basis. >> reporter: now, if the judge finds that that juror should not have been on the jury, she could order a new trial for scott

peterson. that means the guilty verdict would be out and he would get a new hearing, a new trial. the hearing picks up this morning at 10:00. in redwood city, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people will be following it. thanks, kris. well, moving you forward on a plan to keep mount diablo schools covid free when it comes to students returning back from spring break. the contra costa county school districts will go dark starting next friday and this is going to happen through the week of april 3rd. families will have a chance to receive free rapid response test kits, which the district hopes they use days before they return. the first day back is april 11th. bay area hoops fans have a day to breathe after two down to the wire march madness games in san francisco. visitors are flocking to the city with the sweet 16's west regional playing out at the chase center. with car break-ins spiking in san francisco, police are adding more officers.

some of the work includes educating visitors on how to avoid being a victim of break-ins. >> we ask that you not leave any valuables in your vehicle. if you are planning to leave the vehicle with valuables, we ask that you put them in a trunk or in an area out of sight. >> as for the games, excitement and upsets. a star sighting, steph curry attended. he's recovering from that leg injury, not on the road with the warriors right now. last night's first game we saw the nation's top-ranked team go down. fourth-seeded arkansas razorbacks played a tough defense. gonzaga fell short. texas tech took on duke, the sports world focused on coach k, who is calling it a career once the season ends. and duke lives to see another day. they hold on to beat texas tech

78-73. duke takes on arkansas tomorrow for a spot in the final four. we're finally narrowing it down. >> it would be nice to see duke go all the way, especially at the end of his career. i'm sure a lot of my carolina friends are not happy to hear that. 6:08 this morning. this is the skyline. you can see the bay bridge right there. it's pretty chilly out there this morning as well. rob mayeda in with a look at the forecast. >> this morning you saw san francisco a little bit of misty skies. walnut creek, low clouds but not as much of a drizzle that we're seeing closer to the inner bay this morning. 48 degrees, cloudy start that will eventually see a little more sunshine inland, low clouds lingering around the bay and coast as we head toward the afternoon. assistance should see highs in the low 60s. 66 in oakland, low 70s in san jose. and for the tri-valley, north bay valleys and areas south of

now. i'll have a closer look at how the rest of the bridges are doing coming up. well, good morning. very happy friday to you. apple is considering a subscription plan for its iphones. this, according to a report from bloomberg. it would work just as it sounds, you pay a monthly fee to apple for the latest iphone, just like you pay for your netflix or your icloud. it would likely be cheaper than the payments you make to your cell phone provider for a phone. new ways to get around, in new york city uber is going to team up with yellow cab so you can call an uber or a cab on the uber app. this will help uber solve its driver shortage. alaska airline is going to move its gates at sfo. alaska says it's going to spend millions of dollars to move it. it will include a new lounge. the airline also points out the terminal is closer to the runway than terminal 2 where it

currently is. they'll save jet fuel. the author of the book "the end of policing" says sales of his book rocketed upwards after texas senator ted cruz held it up at the supreme court hearings earlier this week. cruz was trying to criticize the books found in a school library. the author went on twitter to thank cruz for the shout-out. two people who used to work as moderators for tiktok are suing the company because they say they saw awful things as part of their job. now, obviously that's what content moderators do. but the two plaintiffs say tiktok did not provide sufficient mental health counseling and other support. a lot of tiktok is very innocent, interesting stuff, lots of influencers, people who enthusiastically show you new products. if they're getting paid to do so, they're supposed to tell you that. consumer analysts say tiktok is outpacing youtube when it comes to selling stuff. >> lots of partnerships with

valley, and san jose not too cold. it's acting a bit like a blanket. 51 degrees in san jose. right now we have cloudy skies around dublin, 48 degrees, eventually should see low 70s this afternoon, and into assistance 47 degrees, and mist at times. might be just enough to get those windshield wipers going, especially across the bridges. cloudy start with low clouds. eventually we'll see the low clouds breaking up around noon and the high temperature today, a range of generally low 60s around the bay, to low 70s around san jose, tri-valley low to mid-70s, and santa rosa climbing. saturday, similar temperatures, we'll get a bit of a southerly wind flow ahead of the storm, so it actually might be a little bit warmer. then everything begins to change sunday. rain on the way, picking up, we think, especially around sunday evening into sunday night. you can see here in our

futurecast, saturday will be just fine, sunday now the rain comes in. might briefly see some light rain near the coast as early as around midday, but we think the rain event is going to come in after sunset on sunday, so sunday night into monday. you can see the bay area carrying quite a big rainfall deficit. i think we'll get about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain. san francisco, showers into monday. you can see valley temperatures rebounding back into the 70s toward the middle part of the week. >> things are quiet on the roads. a live look at the san mateo bridge. it looks ominous because of the reflection of the headlights coming in. it is busy, but there's nothing causing delays, t just typical morning slow spots, especially considering we're inching closer to the 6:30 hour. as far as the overall map of the bay area, we're good there. i don't have any traffic icons

falling from a free-fall ride at orlando's icon amusement park. witnesses say the victim slipped from his seat as the ride dropped from the 435-foot tower. the company that owns the ride is working closely with oritiest what happened. the ride indefinitely. so far they have not responded. developing this morning, authorities in the central valley believe a man wanted for murder of an 8-year-old girl may be in the bay area. >> bob redell joins us live in hayward. they're trying to entice anybody who knows more, a reward is being offered. >> reporter: correct, a $3,000 reward being offered by crime stoppers for any information leading to the arrest of this man. this is his photo. his name is dhante jackson and he's wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend's daughter, sophia mason.

mason was 8 years old, was from hayward and was found dead at a home in merced earlier this week. sophia's mother, samantha johnson has been charged with her murder and is in jail. sophia's body was found after relatives told police they had not seen her since december. sophia's family told us they're grateful a reward is being offered and they hope police are able to track down dhante jackson. >> this guy is dangerous and who knows if he's armed and who knows who else he can hurt or has hurt. we just want to get him off the streets and in jail as soon as possible. >> reporter: merced police believe that dhante jackson is in the bay area, according to the reward poster he has family here, he has work here, and he's been known to hang out here in the east bay and in the south bay as well. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so tragic. thank you, bob.

6:33, and developing this morning, president biden traveling to poland. this is following a show of unity with nato leaders. he's expected to meet with u.s. troops and visit with refugees who have escaped the fighting in ukraine. within the last few minutes the white house announcing that he'll deliver a major address tomorrow. the president also plans to meet with poland's president to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and so far more than 3.5 million people have fled ukraine. other developments this morning, ukraine's forces, they have reclaimed more territory they're continuing to push russian forces away from the capital of kreev. they have carried out their first prisoner swap since the war began, as richard engel reports from ukraine, all eyes, again, will be on president biden. >> reporter: as president biden continues to rally nato leaders and promise support for ukraine, many in this country worry that they're being left out, that the western alliance is primarily concerned about defending western europe, and may be

willing to sacrifice ukraine. i'll have a full story coming up on the "today" show. the "today" show starts at 7:00, right after us here on "today in the bay." joining us now is rose mueller, the former nato deputy secretary general. thank you for taking the time early this friday morning. nato leaders have agreed to bolster defenses along the alliance's eastern flank at the emergency summit in brussels. do you think this alliance is doing enough or do you think further action should be taken here at this point? >> i think, frankly, the most important thing about the summit yesterday, in addition to the bolstering of nato's deterrence in defense, is that president biden was very keen to ensure the allies in europe are in this for a long haul. that this is not about a month or two months, but they will continue to support ukraine as it needs it with arments and humanitarian assistance going

forward, and i think he got that out of the nato alliance, but the g7 and european nation as well. across the west there is a strong sense of unity, but also key asian partners involved as well. >> so do you think the right people heard that message and it didn't make a difference to russians, let's say? >> if you're meaning vladimir putin, i'm not sure what he's hearing these days. he's so isolated in the kremlin with a small cohort around him. iet not even sure he's getting any kind of alternative information to what they are feeding him. so i hope that he is getting the message that the really fierce sanctions regime against russia is beginning to bite and to bite in ways that matter. the people of russia are fighting over sugar in the stores, that type of thing is going on. in addition to which big industries are starting to suffer because they can't get components and high technology parts they need to do repair work. so i think this all is biting on the russian economy and putin

may be taking note of that. let's hope. >> as we mentioned, president biden traveling to poland today to see these ongoing humanitarian efforts and the crisis itself. what do you think he can expect? >> i think he'll get, of course, a warm welcome from them. they love it when american presidents come to visit in general. but i also think it will give him a chance to really feel the weight of this humanitarian crisis, because of the 3 million ukrainians who have fled, over 2 million of them are in poland. so he will be able to understand, i think, the human tragedy from the russian invasion of ukraine, and i think that will really be important for continued commitment of the united states to support the humanitarian aid effort, and for him to be able to convey to congress how important it is to keep that support coming. >> and he had a pretty strong message as well yesterday talking about his -- if chemical

weapons are used in this case. >> absolutely, because russia has been threatening now saying that they see that the ukrainians are preparing a chemical attack, and of course this is their typical behavior when they are planning a false flag operation. so i think the fact that all the nato leaders have individually talked to -- not all of them, but many of the top leaders have talked to vladimir putin to warn him off such an attempt, but also nato as a whole, and the president of the united states have done so very publicly. it sends a clear signal to the kremlin, no impunity, you are not going to get away with a false flag chemical attack. >> you show the show of unity, them all being there together, and then amid all the tragedy that we are seeing through the pictures coming from the area. thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us today. >> my pleasure. 6:38 on your friday morning.

this morning gas prices are rising and we all know that, but it's got so extreme now that it's forcing so many people to cross the border just to fill up their tanks. californians are heading to mexico to buy gas. according to the "l.a. times," gas in tijuana is $3.96, almost $2 less than some of the prices we're seeing in california. so people that live close to the border are heading south to fill up. some tijuana gas stations are putting up signs that say cheaper than in the usa. when the war in ukraine began, the mexican government vowed to keep gas prices low. they're providing subsidies to mexican oil companies and refineries to make that happen. >> save a penny everywhere you can. >> don't go that far, though. it's going to cost you more. taking a live look at lake tahoe. don't expect any snow to be falling. record high temperatures are expected, reaching into the upper 60s around the lake.

south lake tahoe set a record high for yesterday's date at 66 degrees. there's still some snow, so i guess if you want to go ski, you can get some skiing in. >> we have good conditions at the base and upper mountain and more 60s for highs for tomorrow. look at changes just around the corner. finally at pal palisades tahoe, you can see continues looking good, 39 inches at the base and 100 in the upper mountains. for saturday, the warmer of the two weekend days, 70s standard san jose, 60s san francisco over to oakland, and sunday now the rain comes back, especially as we head into sunday evening and sunday night. so the timing here, saturday plans should be fine, light rain by midday sunday, then the main event comes in from about sunday evening into monday morning. we'll have showers that will take us into the beginning of next week. there's a look at your forecast. the rain is starting to pick

now. on our way to the 70s this afternoon. we'll have more on the weekend rain chances coming up. >> the bridge drive times, westbound 580 toward the richmond bridge nine minutes and westbound 80, a couple of delays, 14 minutes. still no metering lights on at the bay bridge toll plaza. new developments this morning in the investigation into the disgraced former north bay town mayor. dominic fappoli resigned last year from his position as windsor mayor. about a dozen women have accused him of sexual assault and misconduct and now sonoma county authorities have handed their investigation evidence over to the state attorney generals general office. now, prosecutors will decide whether or not to seek those charges. sonoma county district attorney recused her office due to ties to the case. president biden, we've been mentioning, is in poland where he's meeting with nato soldiers and ukrainian refugees.

>> scott, the geography is very important here. >> poland, the eastern edge of nato. if there's going to be a fight between the west and russia, it will be in poland, and the soldiers who president biden meets today are going to be some of the troops that will fight it. live pictures of air force one, just arrive. poland used to be under the influence of the soviet union, behind the iron curtain. poland is now a productive member of the west and democracy. the white house says biden will make a major speech tomorrow. here he is speaking to nato. >> today i'm announcing the united states are prepared to commit more than $1 billion in humanitarian assistance to help get relief to millions of ukrainians affected by the war in ukraine. many ukrainian refugees will wish to stay in europe, closer to their homes, but we also will welcome 100,000 ukrainians to the united states with a focus on reuniting families.

>> we will have full coverage of that, of course, and on monday we'll talk a lot about this major speech that biden says he's going to give on saturday. a lot going on with our former president. donald trump has sued hillary clinton over the 2016 election that he won. the suit, which also names other democrats, accuses her of causing financial damage by alleging he colluded with russia. now, it is very, very difficult to sue for that kind of damage arising during an election. also, a good opportunity to extinguish any gas lighting about what mueller said. trump says he was cleared of collusion. mueller's report found the russians did help the trump campaign, the trump campaign knew they were helping. about collusion, mueller said we did not address collusion, which is not a legal term. rather, we focused on whether the evidence was sufficient to charge any member of the campaign with taking part in a criminal conspiracy. it was not.

new focus on the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. she fired off text messages to trump's chief of staff after the election of 2020, including during the january 6th attacks, encouraging mark meadows to overturn the election. those have been turned over to the house committee investigating. clarence thomas was the only justice to vote in favor of a lawsuit brought by the texas attorney general trying to overturn the election. every other justice voted to dismiss. >> if you're a justice and there's a perceived conflict of interest, if you are, quote, impartiality might be questioned, then you are required to recuse. there's no way to enforce that other than impeachment and removal, which is a process that has never happened for a supreme court justice in american history. >> clarence thomas still in the hospital. they'll be talking a lot more about him and his wife's actions and what it all means on the "today" show, and of course

they've been waiting for hours. we're going to shift, josh and i are usually out here alone, but we have a ton of friends. i think he counted about 100 folks, there's the brewery and this is just all folks waiting for the release of pliny the younger. it must be magical because folks are driven for hours. they came here yesterday. that guy has been quite hype all morning, waiting for this beer. so, yeah, it's released at 11:00, folks get a wrist band. they just walked around to give the stamps that says you've already been in lined. we're joined by jason, and he came from not exactly down the road. >> good morning. we're from about 50 miles east of los angeles, i drove about eight and a half hours last night to be here and be part of this event. >> it's your first time? >> yes. >> why? >> it's always something i wanted to do. i love the beer and i just wanted to be a part of this
