yesterday the president was in poland ground zero as you can see for the refugee crisis. the country has already taken in some 2 million ukrainians fleeing the war. >> i'm here in poland to see first hand the humanitarian cries cries. the democracy is going to prevail and the values we share or autocracy will preswral. that is what is at stake. france is helping launch a new evacuation effort in one of ukraine's hardest hit cities. president macron says his country is working with turkey and greece to safely evacuate any ukrainian who wants to leave the bomb ravaged city of mariupol. ukrainian officials have accused russian troops of shelling escape routes and capturing people trying to get out. that rush of refugees is not expected to let up any time soon. one couple who made it out safely found their way to the bay area with their daughter.

they share their harrowing journey. >> reporter: they are happy to be safe after escaping from ukraine, now staying with their dawiter and grandchildren in morgan hill. >> while they were on the movie was not able to breathe. i was so afraid because i know how dangerous it was. >> reporter: they only speak ukrainian so their daughter translated and says her parents wouldn't leave but when the bombs started falling closer to their town north of kyiv they decided to get out. for three weeks it was too dangerous and they had to shelter. >> military guys were not letting them out. they were saying it is not safe. >> reporter: they also had to build up gas rations just to fill up the car. >> so the most difficult part was really to take the decision to leave, to just sit in the car and leave.

because there were tragic cases during the three weeks of people trying to leave and russians just killing them when they go because they were shooting civilians. >> reporter: on the 14th they left, driving past cities in ruin then through forests on dirt roads to evade russian forces. it took three grueling days to reach the border. one night they stayed in a small village in the only house left standing. >> it was so quiet. there was nothing. you could either bombing or shooting and nothing else. >> reporter: last week they made it to romania and flew to the bay area. >> when they finally arrived, that was like some dreams came true. >> reporter: this week they learned their next door neighbor's house was bombed. they constantly worry for them and her parents who refused to leave. their new neighbors have put up ukrainian flags on their homes in support. the couple hopes the world won't

forget what is going on and one day to go back home. >> we have churches and cathedrals in our town there that survived the second world war and right now russians are bombing all of that. we'll never forget this. we will never forgive. but ukraine will win and we will be free and live our life the way we want and not the way the russians want us to. >> reporter: in morgan hill, ian cole, nbc bay area news. >> one of those incredible stories of survival. we turn to a developing story in the east bay. the fbi is working with the contra costa district attorney to investigate multiple officers from the pittsburg and antioch police department accused of crimes of moral turpitude described as wicked or deviant behavior that would shock a community. three officers are on leave and we're told that is just the beginning. here is "today in the bay"

cheryl hurd. >> reporter: police departments under fire announced late this afternoon a criminal investigation involving three officers from pittsburg pd and a number of officers from antioch pd. the contra costa county da's office along with the fbi's violent crime task force serving search warrants at multiple locations. the da's office says the investigation covers a broad range of offenses, which include crimes of moral turpitude. >> moral turpitude crimes are those that have bad intent. so things like fraud, theft, and other kinds of malfeasance that erode the public trust. >> reporter: the da isn't saying much more than that. however, the pittsburg police department is providing much more clarity. the department releasing a statement saying, in september of 2021, the department received information that a pittsburg officer was involved in illegal

activity and that other law enforcement officers were involved. that's when their investigation started. our sources telling us just this past wednesday the fbi interviewed a number of officers and cell phones were confiscated. three were put on paid administrative leave. >> while these officers are on leave, there is going to be a forensic analysis of their cell phones. there are going to be search warrants being served here. >> reporter: the antioch police department is already under scrutiny. the california department of justice is reviewing a december, 2021, deadly officer involved shooting in the city. we spoke with civil rights attorney john burris who says he has a few cases against the department including one where a man died while in police custody. legal analyst steven clark says this investigation with these two departments will have a ripple effect. >> that is a real big problem for a da's office trying to prosecute cases utilizing these

officers' testimony. when people don't trust the police, that creates a problem for entire communities. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. today marks eight weeks since the disappearance of an east bay woman and this morning there is a new plea to help find her. alexis gabe has not been seen since january 26th. organizers with the search effort and the class kids foundation are now asking farmers, ranchers, and real estate agents to help this weekend by checking any unoccupied buildings, structures, or fields for any signs of the missing 24-year-old. >> it's something we know can move the case forward. and who knows? i mean, somebody actually might find something that's relevant and help us to resolve this situation sooner rather than later. >> gabe was last seen at the home of her ex-boyfriend. her car was found abandoned in oakley with the keys still in the ignition. her family is desperate for

answers. >> it's tough. i can't even put it into words how they're feeling. but every day not finding her just gets harder and harder. >> police have no credible leads in the case. to a followup this morning in contra costa county where more than 30 people are out of their homes after a fire tore through the delta pines apartment complex in antioch. it happened last night at sycamore and auto center drive. ten units were damaged by the fire. fortunately, everyone made it out safely. we're told 21 adults and 12 children. it was a close call for a bicyclist in san jose who was nearly hit after two cars collided. just jaw dropping to see that security footage from 17th and julian in downtown san jose yesterday afternoon. you could see the suv ran a red light, colliding with the silver

car. that bicyclist almost got taken out. the cyclist we are told also was running a red light. no word on any injuries. turning now to march madness in san francisco, it is back tonight after two down to the wire games this week. you may have seen it in thursday night's first game the nation's top ranked gonzaga bulldogs went down to 4 seeded arkansas razorbacks playing tough defense throughout and the zags fell short losing 74-68. in the second matchup texas tech took on duke. the sports world was all focused on duke's coach. this is coach k's final season coaching the blue devils and duke lives to see another day. they held on to beat texas tech, 78-73. now number 2 seed duke takes on number 4 seed arkansas tonight at chase center for a spot in the final 4. it is 7:10 right now.

suffered a tragic and untimely death. hawkins has been the iconic drummer of the foo fighters for 25 years. before that he was alanis morissette's drummer. the 50-year-old is survived by his wife and three children. we are moving you forward this morning. people 50 or older could soon be eligible for a second booster shot. the biden administration plans to offer a second booster for both pfizer and moderna according to the "new york times." the fda could green light a second booster as soon as next week. and then like we've seen with previous vaccine approvals the cdc would have to give its own advice. "the times" reports the white house wants to give people older than 50 the option to get an additional shot. in the case of another covid surge. this fall americans of all ages could be eligible for that second booster. the queen of music is coming back to the big screen. the film "selena" is returning to theaters nationwide 25 years

of this because it is very important so you can plan out your weekend. satellite radar paints the picture of what is to come. right now notice we don't have a ton of cloud cover except up through the north bay. however, we have this system just off in the pacific and that is already making its approach. what is going to happen with that? well, today we'll get a mix of sun and clouds. it is going to be a really nice day in the upper 50s and 60s but it is the winds that are also going to increase. so today we'll be mild. not as windy. but notice in the time stamp right above here by 5, 6, 7:00 the winds begin to pick up getting gusty 20, 25 plus miles per hour up through parts of the north bay. even down through the rest of the region so from calm to breezy to windy. sunday around 2:00 or 3:00 the winds really begin to pick up as the system approaches. what can we expect for the timing of the rain? pay attention to the time please stamp up on the right-hand side. sunday 3:30 a.m. mainly dry but a lot of cloud

cover. it moves in late saturday in increase and then the line of showers pushes through around 7:30. a lot of the shower activity is mainly up through the north bay initially but we could see a quick moving line of showers so not as heavy and then the heavier rain moves in around 5, 6, 7:00, heavier pockets of rain becoming more widespread. notice the time stamp overnight sunday night into early monday. we get widespread shower activities, heavier pockets down through the south bay which means the impact of this could creep into your morning commute early monday morning. in addition to the showers we'll see windy conditions. keep a close eye out. if you had plans to head to lake tahoe this is going to be another area impacted through the sierra. notice the time stamp all the way through tuesday because that system lingers around through monday and we get a couple inches of snow and that could make for dangerous travel especially late tomorrow into monday. your window to head to tahoe is

joins us with a peek at your micro climate forecast. i was smitten by that. >> one of my favorite shots. that and the shot of the golden gate bridge. beautiful. even though it is kind of a mix of sun and clouds now we'll see an increase in cloud cover. that is because we have a little bit of a change into the bay area. let's talk about your current walnut creek temperature 49 degrees right now. notice the winds not really a factor. the reason i am pointing out the winds is it is going to get gusty for tomorrow. you want to prep for that if you have any outdoor patio furniture or anything that could potentially fly away you want to bring it indoors now. we're in the 40s now. here is the system i'm talking about. just off in the pacific this is going to start to move in late this evening with a lot of cloud cover bringing showers heading into sunday. depending where you are the timing is going to matter. here is a closer look at your headlines. i'll go into these in a lot more detail to help you plan out sunday and monday as well. coming up in my full forecast. we have the return of rain.

it is 7:43 and saturday. i hope you're doing okay. got your cup of coffee, tea, your beverage of choice. whatever is good. right now walnut creek about 49 degrees. it is a little cloudy in some spots. so one thing you will notice, look at the sunrise. that camera is creating quite the glare. 48 degrees right now. i promise this is just a sun glare. nothing crazy going on out there. right now temperatures are in the 40s. a few degrees cooler in some spots. one thing you'll notice within the next couple of hours is the increase in cloud cover. and this is to signal the changing weather ahead. let's take a look at satellite radar. the reason i love showing this is because it paints the picture of what is approaching, right? you can see the bay area right

here. a couple areas of cloud cover. if you look in the pacific that is the system we're monitoring. forecasted highs for today, it will be a sort of a mix of sun and clouds. it'll be a little foggy at times and then the winds are also expected to pick up. but you don't have to worry too much about it until tomorrow so depending on where you live if you're up in the north bay, 20, 25 miles per hour, notice the wins begin to pick up. right around your lunch hour. we could see the winds start to get breezy as early as tonight into early tomorrow morning. the winds will pick up. then they'll get really gusty heading into sunday evening. 20, 30 plus-mile-per-hour winds. this is your moment to prepare yourself. get the patio furniture in. anything you don't want to fly away or get wet this is the time to do it. the timing is very important. i took this all the way through sunday 3:30 in the morning. mild and dry for today. but notice the cloud cover. a couple little rain chances, showers kind of beginning to push in through the north bay. santa rosa, you could see it. it stays up to the north through 8:00 a.m.

fast forward to about 3:00 p.m. and now this system is showing a little bit of an activity up through napa. so you'll be okay for the first half of the morning. we'll just get light rain and also around the peninsula and down through the south bay. if i push the time stamp forward now looking ahead to 5:00, 6:00 you can notice some heavier pockets and a lot of the emphasis is also going to be in the south bay which is good because san jose tends to fall in that rain shadow. the focus is going to be late sunday overnight into early monday morning. so notice it says 2:30 in the morning. a lot of the activity of the showers will push through overnight. we could see a couple scattered showers on monday but because there is a lot of instability in our atmosphere we could even get the possibility of some thunderstorms heading into monday as well for the start of the work week. sierra, lake tahoe commuters, this is really important. your window to lake tahoe without having to worry about the gusts or the potential for winter weather advisories is going to be today. early tomorrow.

welcome back at 7:49 on your saturday morning. i promise you san francisco is underneath the cloud cover somewhere. vianey arana says we'll have a mild saturday, a little sunshine and rain moving in later tomorrow. responding to demand from students, palo alto schools are moving now to hire full-time mental health workers. the district currently contracts out most of its services and if approved the mental health employees would start in elementary and middle schools.

the staff would include ten clinical workers as well as several technicians at a cost of just over $1 million. we are moving you forward withi. throughout the pandemic there have been a lot of debates about and language development in children. today in the bay's laura garcia spoke to an expert to find out more. >> for speech and linguistics obviously the being able to visualize the mouth and facial expressions helped children learn different sounds and also the social cues for the social pragmatic. but using the mask previously we've also learned the importance of the eyes in social communication. so sometimes, you know, the phrase you can smile with your eyes is true and this is something students have learned during the mask mandates being

on and now they've learned to use both their eyes and their faces to communicate with others. it has been a positive all around. >> what advice do you have for parents in regard to trying to help their kids along? >> for parents obviously, you know, there is going to be a lot of behaviors from our younger children. they're going to cry, be anxious, wonder what's going on when they see other children and the adults in their lives not wearing masks outside the grocery stores especially at school and have a lot of questions. so it is important for parents to sit down and really talk to their kids after them what they saw and how they feel and, also, like i said, use social stories with puppets or toys or dolls. maybe even books where you can draw a mask on the characters and make a story of the characters taking off their masks and, you know, the teachers telling them they don't have to wear those masks anymore.

just set the dvr and we will see you whenever you're ready for us. >> thanks. we'll see you tomorrow. a quick look at the top stories we're following locally. today president biden will meet with refugees in warsaw, poland. we have new video of the president arriving at the presidential palace. we're told he already met with the polish president as well as the ukrainian ministers. later today he is set to deliver what the white house is calling a significant address about what is at stake for the u.s. and its nato allies. there is a new plea this morning for help finding a missing east bay woman. today marks eight weeks since alexis gabe vanished. she hasn't been seen since january 26th. organizers with the search effort are now asking farmers, ranchers, and real estate agents to help this weekend by checking any unoccupied buildings or fields for signs of the missing woman. gabe was last seen at her ex-boyfriend's house. her car was found abandoned in oakley with the keys still in the ignition.

her family is desperate for answers. police say they have no credible leads in the case. the fbi is investigating officers at two police departments in the east bay. three officers from antioch and pittsburg police department have been put on paid administrative leave. the contra costa district attorney's office and the fbi are investigating a broad range of offenses which involve crimes of, quote, moral turpitude or unethical behavior. >> moral turpitude crimes are those that have bad intent, so things like fraud and theft and other kinds of malfeasance that instead erode the public trust. >> our sources tell us just this past week the fbi interviewed a number of officers and confiscated their cell phones. turning now to march madness it is back tonight in san francisco after two down to the wire games this week. in thursday night's first game the nation's top ranked gonzalez bulldogs went down and the 4th
