roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> as you probably know the stars were out in las vegas last night for the 64th grammy awards. ahead we're going to break down the most talked about moments and the winners. spoiler alert, nobody got slapped. let's start with a look at the forecast. >> good news. >> i don't want to ruin it for you, if you were watching for drama, you probably didn't see it. >> i did record it. >> here's some drama in the weather department. you have a 30-degree swing in your forecast. >> it's going to be crazy over the next few days. you'll know the people who didn't watch the forecast. today it's nice and cool, kind of a breeze out there. those winds stay gusty going into today. and mostly a northerly wind at about 15 to 25 miles per hour. it stays gusty, even into later this evening, and then it starts to relax heading into tomorrow. but we are also looking at a nice cool start to our workweek. today temperatures in the 60s, but soon we'll be hitting the 90s.

we'll talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. >> kari, thank you. well, developing this morning out of sacramento, an investigation is under way after a mass shooting in downtown that left six people dead, 12 others injured. the shooting happened near city hall. this is a little more than 24 hours ago. it's believed multiple people opened fire. the video you're seeing showing a fight at about the same time shots were fired at 2:00 a.m. so far, police are not confirming if there's a connection here. one woman says her son is among those who is dead and is now at utter loss. >> my son was a very vivacious young man, you know, fun to be around, life of the party, have fun, smiling all the time, don't bother people. for this to happen, it's crazy. >> police say a large crowd was gathered before the gunfire, but it's not clear if this was for a specific venue or event.

this is the second mass shooting in sacramento area this year. in february a father shot and killed his three daughters and a chaperone in a church before killing himself. a surprise appearance by ukraine's president as russia faces new war crime accusations. russia is withdrawing from some northern cities to focus more on territory in eastern ukraine. this comes as im inls come to light showing devastation in areas vacated by russian troops. we have to tell you you might find these images disturbing. secretary of state blinken calls some of the latest images a punch to the gut. near kyiv, ukrainians have found the bodies of hundreds of civilians and this comes in the wake of an appearance at last night's grammy awards by president zelenskyy. brie, the russian retreat revealing some horrible stories

and images. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, kris. we're hearing strong words from ukraine's president about what's happening there in ukraine. he's saying that russian forces are targeting civilians and is accusing russia of genocide. more horrific images of the scenes on the ground in ukraine. drone video from above shows block after block of destruction caused by russian forces. ukraine's president sharing heartbreaking stories from his country during a video message at the grammys. ukrainian troops continue to put up a fierce fight, forcing russia to retreat from areas like the capital city. >> russia's original plans to take over the whole country, including kyiv, have been dealt a devastating setback. they are regrouping. >> reporter: russia's economy has been crippled by sanctions.

u.s. officials say relief remains a potential negotiating tool to help end the war. >> our focus is ensuring we're doing everything possible to strengthen ukraine's hand at the negotiating table, including a meeting between president zelenskyy and president putin. >> reporter: the violence forcing an influx of refugees to flee ukraine. >> it was a huge struggle for me to make this decision and i didn't want to leave my town. >> reporter: others returning to their home country, despite the ongoing conflict. >> i want to go home. >> reporter: work on a peace treaty continues, but a deal appears a long way off. ukrainian officials say draft peace treaty documents are moving along, but russia's chief negotiator says that talks have not progressed enough for a meeting between the two presidents yet. >> all right, we're all waiting for that. thank you so much, brie. the senate judiciary

committee is expected to vote today to approve judge ketanji brown jackson's nomination to the u.s. supreme court. the full senate with a full vote expected by the end of the week. >> which means barring some extremely unexpected news, marcus and kris, we'll have a new supreme court judge by the end of the week. now, a reminder on how all this works as we look live at the capitol in washington, d.c. this morning. democrats only need a simple majority, both on the senate committee to move it forward and then again on the senate floor. we have not heard of a single democrat who opposes the nomination, so that alone should be enough to push jackson's nomination through. remember, kamala harris breaks ties in the senate. jackson will likely get a few republican votes as well. senator susan collins of maine, a republican will vote yes. she says she wants to get back to the time when a senate approved qualified judges and

ignored party politics. if they can do the job, she says they're in. she says the process is broken, writing the constitution clearly assigns to the senate is to examine the experience, the qualifications, the integrity of the nominee. it's not to assess whether the nominee reflects the ideology or would rule exactly as an individual senator would want. indeed, that's how it used to be ruth bader ginsburg, everyone realized she was incredibly qualified, confirmed 96-3. david souter dominated 90-9. scalia very conservative and unanimous. we don't know how many senators will vote. we do know that lindsey graham sits on the judiciary committee and will be a no vote. you wall graham, the republican from south carolina, battled with jackson during the nomination hearings. the two arguing over her

sentencing of child pornographers. graham says she's well qualified for the job. but remember, jackson is coming from the dc court of appeals, which is a federal judgeship. which means she was doing these votes, nominations about a year ago, and graham enthusiastically supported her, got a yes vote from him. >> it doesn't quite make sense. >> it does not. >> most things in washington do not sometimes. >> thank you, scott. happening now, a group of angry bay area mothers will make their voices heard with one graphic new billboard. this is going up in the heart of san francisco. >> the billboard is the creation of the group mothers against drug deaths, and they are hoping that it can spur changes citywide. city's cierra johnson is live in san francisco. this is a billboard going up in

a very busy area just blocks away from the tenderloin. what's the point? >> reporter: marcus and kris, the group really wants to get as many eyes on this billboard as possible, and as you can imagine, a location near union square, near the tenderloin, would definitely do that. now, here is the quote that is going to be placed on that controversial billboard. the billboard is expected to go up today. that quote, famous the world over for our brains, beauty, and now our dirt-cheap fentanyl. the organizers say they are spending $25,000 for the billboard to remain up for an entire month. the group says they're hoping to get the city to shut down the open fentanyl dealing, as well as that tolerance toward the open use, as well as sale of drugs. >> our greatest concern is that people are going to come to the city, there's feces, dirty needles, there's people laying out on the streets completely out of it from using drugs, and

they have open wounds on them, they have foil in their hands that have leftover fentanyl on it. children can get ahold of that. >> reporter: and today's installation of the billboard comes after san francisco mayor london breed let the 90-day state of emergency in the tenderloin expire last month, which allowed for more police in the area as well as more services to address the drug problem. the billboard is expected to go up today. the group says they're not just going to handle san francisco. they're hoping to take this campaign international with those billboards. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> interesting juxtaposition of the image and the message for sure, to get people talking. thank you very much. let's take a look at downtown san jose. we showed you san francisco just a few moments ago. here is san jose and it's looking nice and clear. and it is an interesting forecast coming up. not just for today, but for the week. >> we've got a lot of changes

headed our way. we're starting out cool and windy this morning, as our temperatures are mostly in the upper 40s, low 50s as you're heading at the door. if you're going to be on the coast today, pacifica will start out at about 50 degrees, highs head up to about 60 degrees and then back down quickly. around the bay, san francisco reaching 64 degrees. really windy in antioch today as our highs reach 67 degrees, and a mix of sun and clouds for novato, reaching 68 degrees. we are going to have a significant warm-up over the next few days and we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing some gas prices where you can find the cheapest. >> that's right, i'm monitoring some of the cheapest gas prices around the bay. according to gas buddy, we're looking at san rafael, according to gas buddy $5.59, and the address is 2nd street. there's fuel at 24/7, and in

this morning, howard schultz is headed back to starbucks today as ceo, again. i think this is his third time as ceo. he's already taken action. he says starbucks will suspend stock buybacks and instead invest the money in stores and people. when a company has extra cash like starbucks does, sometimes it spends that money to buy up its own stock. when starbucks buys shares of starbucks, those stairs cease to exist. fewer shares mean existing shares are worth more. it's an easy way to goose your stock price. president biden was talking about this last week, criticizing oil companies for stock buybacks, using their cash on hand to push their share prices higher instead of drilling or finding new deposits. wall street will be thinking a lot about interest rates this week. we get the fed minutes, the notes from their last meeting on wednesday. that good jobs report last

seeing some of the rain just very close by, but it's going to miss us, as the winds kind of kick up from the north and also from the west. we're going to see those temperatures really staying on the cool side due to, in part, a cooler wind starting to come in and it's going to stay breezy today, as the winds are mostly going to be at about 20 to 25 miles per hour, even into the evening, and then gradually starting to calm down by early tomorrow morning. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. enjoy today. santa clara heading to the park, it's going to be in the mid-50s and we'll see peeks of sunshine today as we head into the upper 60s. here's what's going on. strong area of high pressure heats up those temperatures briefly for the middle of the week, but then another cold front to the north of us is going to cause a big drop in temperatures for the weekend. so take a look at our trend for morgan hill. 70s today, 90s on thursday. and it's still going to be hot

on friday and then it drops off. take a look at the rest of the forecast. this is just unbelievable. so it's 91 on friday and then the high is 58 on monday. yeah, so get ready for all of that. we're going from spring to summer to winter and all of that here in between. but overall you're noticing that it's going to be dry and we see the big heat-up for thursday into friday, and then sunday it cools off significantly. in san francisco, not used to this, but early april we're going to be hitting 85 degrees on thursday. mike, you're hearing a report of a small fire? >> i am. this is off of highway 4 over at bailey road. no structures reported involved, but, again, this is just what's been called into chp. we'll track that in the newsroom. that's over here off of highway 4. 780, a new crash reported as well. i don't see any slowing.

following. >> sacramento police have informed that the six people that died were all adults, three men and three women. yesterday we spoke with pamela harris who says her son, sergio, is one of those who was killed in the incident. >> hopefully they'll catch these people and prosecute them to the fullest. because this was senseless. this wasn't no one shot. if you was down there and you seen all them bullets everywhere, i mean, that was a ms. kerr. >> reporter: calling it a massacre is one way to describe what happened here early sunday morning. a lot of videos on social media showed a fight that happened with gunshots taking place right after that fight. local police here in sacramento have acknowledged that it appears to show the moments that preceded the gunfire. other videos show the gunfire continuing for at least 45 seconds. this whole area in downtown sacramento was closed off

yesterday. we saw bullet casings all across the street that have now been removed. the area was opened again this morning while police continue to ask for the public's help with any information that could help them identify any of the suspects. police also informed they recovered a stolen handgun and they know there were multiple shootings at the scene, as they continue on manhunt for who is responsible for this shooting taking place in downtown sacramento. >> our coverage of this tragic shooting continues not only on air, but online. we are posting updates as we learn more about the investigation. just head to nbcbayarea.com. back here in the bay area, police now say two of the four men shot at a san francisco playground have died. the shooting happened yesterday a little before 5:00 p.m. on brunswick avenue in the city's ingleside neighborhood. the other two victims did not

suffer life-threatening injuries. police so far have not made any arrests. in ukraine the violence and the damage not letting up. seven more people, including three children, were killed in the shelling attack in kharkiv. this is drone video we want to show you taken over the weekend. just some of the devastation in the ukrainian city of mariupol. the humanitarian corridor in the besieged city is expected to open today for those who want to escape the violence. ukraine's prosecutor general says that bodies of 410 civilians have been removed from the areas around kyiv. several towns around ukraine's capital city were recently retaken by russian forces. poland, meanwhile, calling for the creation of a commission to investigate genocide by russia amid the invasion. they claim that's also being echoed by ukraine. happening today the mayor of antioch is scheduled to make an announcement surrounding police department staffing in the wake

of an ongoing investigation. the fbi and contra costa county district attorney's office are jointly looking into potentially criminal activities by officers in both the antioch and pittsburg police departments. the specifics of that investigation are still under wraps, but this morning antioch mayor lamar thorpe will update the staffing situation. that's going to happen at city hall at 11:00 this morning. 5:37 and we are moving you forward as more tech workers return to the office. google is launching its hybrid work model. bob redell is live outside the campus. what will workers see when they head back to work? >> reporter: good morning. google will be requiring workers to be in the office three days of the week, the other two days can be from home or some place else. if employees do want to be inside their office more than three days of the week, they can do that. to enter the office itself, all fwoogle employees must be vaccinated, however if they are

not vaccinated under company approved restrictions, they must meet those company approved restrictions that include masking and regular covid testing. during the pandemic over 14,000 google workers around the world moved to a new office or went fully remote and many of them left the bay area and spread out across the country. back in june google launched a tool for employees that showed how much less they would be paid if they did that, anywhere from 5% to 25%, if they moved from somewhere like the bay area to new york city to a lower cost location. the founder of easy pr explains many employees were unhappy about the changes in pay. >> google is going to see a massive amount of pushback. apple has seen the same thing. the pandemic has pushed a reconciliation of what people are being paid for. are they being paid for time or output, are they being paid for attendance or are they being paid for work? and companies are having to

reconcile with the fact that they've been paying people kind of partly because of where they are because they had to attract them, but now companies are facing this thing where employees have more power. >> reporter: more and more workers returning to the office is good news for nearby restaurants. among them, cucina vente. we've started booking gatherings. it's also worth noting apple is planning a phased office reopening on april 11th. twitter reopened its offices back in march, however twitter and slack have said they will allow remote work indefinitely. in mountain view, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. let's take a live look outside this morning. 5:39 right now. dark and early as we look at san francisco. it's going to be a roller coaster ride when it comes to the forecast.

as we head into the weekend it should be nice. >> it's going to be nice and cooling off. let me show you the changes. napa is going to be hot on friday, reaching 88 degrees. saturday we're up to about 81, and only 68 on sunday. and it's going to be windy. you'll really notice that in san francisco and near the coast. in santa cruz our highs reach from the mid-70s to low 60s, so you can see the beach forecast. once again, all of the changes we'll see going into friday, from sunday, as you're making those plans just know that things are going to be drastically different from one day to the next. we'll talk about what to expect going throughout the week. mike, you're looking to the north bay? >> that's right, we're looking to the north bay because there will be an extension for the closure. folks were waiting to see the real mccoy ferry back in service. we're told that it will be extended through perhaps the end of this month. that will be the third month they're working on the hull of

the ferry. they have to fix that because that keeps you out of the water. we're looking just off the water, highway 4 at discovery boulevard, there is a crash. coming over the water you notice the volume starting to slow and it gets narrower on the roadway and things are starting to jam up just a bit. same thing as you're coming through highway 4, we don't see anything really noticeable through pittsburg and bay point. we're double-checking on the crash on military street and that is just off of 780. it involves some downed wires. there may be some signal lights that are out as well. a little bit of build on the incline for the bay bridge traveling west and we're looking at no major issues outside of that. we see san jose starting to show slower blips. but the next few weeks, including this week, we have spring breaks around colleges and other schools and so there may be a different traffic flow. just keep that in mind. back to you. >> thanks, mike. a travel nightmare. still ahead on "today in the

with them in the future if he's a pariah? remember biden himself said putin cannot remain in power. the white house says new sanctions may be put in place, sanctions against countries that trade with russia, that could include india, which is our ally. india has not joined the rest of the west in sanctioning russia. in fact, it's banks are still working with russia to trade currency. other news, a familiar face will be back at the white house this week. president obama will return tuesday to celebrate the anniversary of the affordable care act. the white house says biden will announce new measures to strengthen the aca at the event. while we're watching everything happening in washington, including the nomination and confirmation process of judge jackson, we'll talk about that at 6:15, and on social media on twitter at scott mcgrew. a live look at sfo and so far this morning there are eight flight cancellations today with another six in san jose to the south. it was a rough weekend for

flyers all across the nation, not just here. bad weather in florida, along with other issues, led to thousands of canceled flights saturday and sunday. some 50 flights into and out of the bay area were canceled yesterday alone. experts say this could be a couple more days before airlines can catch up with the backlog of passengers. >> new for you this morning, sky high gas prices are really driving up the demand for electric vehicles. cars.com says since last february we saw consumer interest in evs increase 173%. this is based on website visits. but it's worth pointing out that drivers face barriers to afford those cars. according to kelley blue book, the average price for an electric car is $40,000. now, one company now trying to change that is trying a new approach. instead of a lease, drivers can pay per month with rates starting at 30 cents per mile.

this also includes a $1,000 deposit. the ceo says he could see many gig workers benefiting. >> this is a really good fit for someone who is a lot of miles. think about someone who is doing delivery on door dash or one of those kind of services, or doing ride share, just doing a lot of miles. it can who, say, for example, is a salesperson. >> now, the program is launching in san francisco, los angeles, atlanta and houston. >> thousands of workers across the u.s. will be headed back to work this morning from a three-day weekend that is built into their schedule for the next six months. >> so about 40 u.s. companies are taking part in a new four-day workweek pilot program. new york-based online clothing company primary, they're among more and more businesses now going monday through thursday. the ceo made that change in 2020 without reducing pay, and he says that it's a boost for

start of today, that continues into late morning. notice our wind speeds at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. much of the north bay and san francisco staying breezy, even into this evening, and then we start to see winds calming down later today. the seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. we'll take a look at our highs for later this afternoon. windy day in antioch, winds continue, highs in the upper 60s. san francisco 64 degrees. and a high of 68 degrees in novato. we're seeing high pressure just to our south. it's going to cause a big ramp-up in temperatures for the end of the week. by the weekend, some colder air starts to push in and it stays windy once again. notice it's dry. and take a look at our trend in morgan hill. these temperatures are all over the place. it's in the low 70s today. we have upper 80s by wednesday, temperatures peak at 93 degrees on thursday, and then take a look at the trend going back down. we go from 93 on thursday to a high, yes, the high temperature

of 59 degrees on monday. be prepared for this roller coaster and make sure you're ready for whatever the day brings. of course i'll keep you updated, but we are going to see wild swings in temperatures while still not getting any rain. mike, you were checking out the metering lights at the bay bridge. >> looking at the lights and the headlights and taillights, we've seen more taillights. we were packed together a little more tightly and then the metering lights were turned on. the slowing sensors showed up on this span are startinging lights, of course, which are on. the rest of the bay, though, a smooth flow through contra costa county, coming across out of the north bay and highway 4 starting to show slowing out of bay point and through concord, toward willow pass road and the like. the tri-valley, typical build. san jose, now 101 slows between 680 and 880. back to you. >> thanks, mike. well, happening now for you,

more. a lot of us are complaining about the same problem. adults reported more frequent snacking and more alcohol intake, as well as decreased physical activity. those add up to pounds on the waistline. some of it being attributed to pandemic shutdowns and restrictions. there was one upside, researchers say smoking went down by 4%. we have an updated timeline on plans for the new costco in the east bay. the store is slated to go up east of interstate 680 and north of stone ridge drive. according to the east bay times, the court has rejected a push by opponents to block that project. they argue the environmental review was inadequate. construction on the new project is expected to wrap up by the end of next year. and right now at 6:00, a tragic mass shooting.
