morning after russian rockets hit a railway station in the eastern portion of ukraine. we want to warn you some of the video you're about to see may be disturbing. according to ukraine's state railway company, 39 people are dead and around 90 injured. around 4,000 people were at the station at the time of the strike, while trying to flee to safer regions of ukraine. ukraine's president zelenskyy is accusing russian forces of destroying the civilian population. the russian military is denying this missile strike. also this morning, japan's foreign minister is expelling eight russian diplomats in response to the invasion of ukraine and the european union has adopted a fifth round of sanctions against russia that prohibits coal imports and access of russian vessels to their ports after the most recent attacks today and in bucha. back to you guys.

justice stephen breyer's formal retirement this summer. a live look this morning at interstate 580 in dublin. things flowing smoothly this morning after traffic nightmares followed a shooting there yesterday. it happened a little before 2:00 p.m. in livermore. it snarled eastbound traffic for hours. the chp says the person shot did not suffer life-threatening injuries. all lanes eventually reopened at about 5:00 at night. the shooter has not been found. play ball. here we go. it's opening day for the san francisco giants, after an opening day last year filled with restrictions and limitations because of the pandemic, this will be the first opening day that finally feels a little more normal. >> it's exciting. it's just a matter of hours, the first pitch will take place for opening day. so here's what you need to know about this big day. the first pitch takes place at 1:35. this is the second time the giants will take on the marlins on opening day and you can expect to see the banner drop. you can also watch the game on nbc bay area sports. now, take a look at your screen. the giants opening day roster has most of the key players back, but fan favorite posy has retired. they lost two key starting pitchers and they're hoping some free agent signings will fill the voids. don't forget, the a's on the road in philadelphia. their home opener is scheduled for april 18th. this is an exciting morning and afternoon planned. we'll be here all morning bringing you all of those updates. live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay."

>> if you're going to play baseball, you want nice weather. >> you can watch the action on nbc bay area sports. opening day ceremony starts at 1:00 this afternoon. first pitch is at 1:35. now, let's talk about the weather, whether you're in or out there. what's the opening day forecast, kari? >> they must be cutting the grass out there. we're starting out with some cool temperatures, but take a look at our first pitch temperature. it's going to be perfect. but kind of windy there, kind of makes the ball head way out to left field. we're going to see gusts up to about 20 miles per hour today, and as we go into the rest of the afternoon, those temperatures hold steady, the winds stay gusty and even pick up a little bit more as we go throughout the game. as we head from the east bay, we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s to start out in concord. take a look at our trend today as we head for the low 80s. a mix of sun and clouds. overall another really warm day.

we're set to get some new records for later today. especially in santa rosa and concord. other areas will be below the record high, but still unseasonably warm for this time of year. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up. mike, you were looking at those cheaper gas prices. >> that's exactly right. i'm tracking cheap gas prices all over the bay area. picked out some cities for you. in richmond it's a golden seven quick stop. gas is $5.49. in daly city, cash only, the arco station on washington street, $5.79 for that price, cash only. same thing for morgan hill, the safeway on 110th, gas prices at $5.39 if you bring the green. let's show you green sensors as well. obviously lighter traffic and we've seen that this week. spring break for a lot of colleges, elementary schools, and grade schools, all rotating for the next few weeks. we'll have a light traffic flow out of the altamont pass.

employees they're going to get a chance to ask new twitter board member elon musk anything they want. apparently to ease their concerns. musk tweeted this earlier this week, him smoking marijuana and the words the next twitter board meeting is going to be lit. musk was appointed to the board of directors earlier this week after purchasing about 10% of the company's shares. twitter employees tell me they're worried about all kinds of things, that musk will have an outside role in leadership. he is, after all, just a board member. that they'll push to have trump reinstated at twitter. they're also concerned about his reputation of firing people who don't agree with him. spacex will launch a capsule containing four astronauts to the international space station in just a couple hours. the launch window opens just after 8:00 a.m. our time. this is video of the pad this morning. the astronauts will be the first all-private crew to visit the station. they hope to pave the way for

because the charges were dismissed. they say the charges should have been replaced by a grand jury indictment unsealed by a hearing on wednesday. however, that was not done. jackson and two others were charged in connection with the shooting of lady gaga's dog walker, ryan fisher, last february. in just a few hours tiger woods is set to start day two in his quest for a record-tying sixth green jacket at the masters. >> everybody was watching him yesterday. the golf superstar kicking off his astonishing comeback after a life-threatening car accident just over a year ago. he shot, get this, one under par, and he's tied for tenth heading into today's round two. tiger was followed by a sea of fans at augusta national giving him a standing ovation as he walked to the final green on thursday. >> 14 months ago, tiger could have lost his life, he could have lost his leg, and the fact that he was able to compete at augusta national, not just compete, but find himself under

par, it's already been a very successful week in my opinion. >> there will be so much more on this comeback coming up on the "today" show. it's at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." good for him. 5:15 right now. trending this morning, a father set a guinness world record for running a half marathon, but he did it while pushing his quintuplets. >> he made history when he crossed the finish line at the oakland running festival last month. he had his five 4-year-olds in the stroller as he ran. that's an extra 240 pounds, not counting all the goldfish and cheerios he had. 2 hours 19 minutes to complete the marathon. he says his kids had a blast and kept telling him, run faster, daddy, run faster. this is not his first world record. in 2019 he ran a full marathon in 5 hours and 31 minutes with his quintuplets. >> so cute. what i thought about when i saw that story, not only my

triplets, but i thought what a great guy because that mom is getting a break. >> don't you want to take the kids out for a run again? >> i signed you up for a marathon. >> i love it. >> all right, we are so excited about the giants home opener for today and baseball season as a whole getting started. take a look at our live view. maybe they were cutting the grass. now that i take a look at this shot, they're power washing the seats and stuff in the stands right there by where cierra johnson is standing. let's get a look at our temperatures and where we're headed today. some upper 60s in san francisco and also in san mateo. in hayward 75 degrees, and we're headed for 77. won't this be so much nicer than yesterday and those 80s and 90 we had? we'll condition to cool off for the weekend. 73 in mountain view.

we'll see some upper 60s and low 70s for sunday, but it's going to be super windy out there. we're going to start to feel the winds picking up near the coastline. today if you're thinking i didn't get to go to the beach while it was super warm, today is the day. santa cruz will reach into the upper 70s and mid-60s for stinson beach. it columbus down by the end of the weekend and it will be really windy as the cold front starts to move closer. by monday we could be watching rain, the first round of possibly three for next week, although it doesn't look like we're going to see as much rain as we hoped and this definitely won't do much to put a dent in the drought. but we are going to see a more active weather pattern rather than just hot and high pressure moving in. we're going to see rain chances going up, as far as what the computer models are showing for next week, the possibility of getting about a tenth of an inch of rain -- or 0.4 of an inch or less on one model, the other

showing about the same. maybe these will start to align and show how much rain we're going to get. but our temperatures in ukiah going from the upper 70s to the upper 60s by sunday. monday, 53 for a high, then we stay in the 50s for tuesday and wednesday as we keep those rain chances. then we see temperatures heading back up. overall for our seven-day inland forecast it's going to continue to cool off. we're going from summer to spring and then to winter next week. we're putting just about everything in the forecast we could imagine, along with gusty winds, rain and highs in the 50s next week for san francisco. still a nice weekend ahead. mike, you've been watching the roads and now the golden gate bridge. >> we're looking at the cones on the golden gate bridge. you will see slowing on the unexpected, but that flashing light does say caution. the sensors were yellow just a few minutes ago so i do believe the average speed is coming up

avenue near alum rock middle school. both women were walking. it's not clear if they were in a crosswalk. paramedics took them to the hospital where they later died. right now there's no information on the suspect's car or the driver. this, by the way, is the 13th and 14th pedestrian deaths in the city of san jose so far this year. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> so sad. thank you, bob. 5:32 right now. no criminal charges will be filed against eastbound bay police officers involved in the death of a man while in custody. 26-year-old mario gonzalez died as alameda police were trying to detain him last april. body cameras show an officer with a knee to his back for close to five minutes. the coroner ruled his death a homicide but says drugs were a factor. the district attorney says she couldn't conclude the three officers involved were

criminally liable for his death. the officers remain on administrative leave. happening today, the commercial dungeness crab season ends for most of the bay area. the season and north of sonoma county on april 20th. either way, the end is coming early because of recent cases of humpback whales being found entangled in lines. in recent years entanglements has been on the rise. this year started late for the same reason. 5:33 on your friday morning. taking a live look outside in the south bay. san jose skyline. nice and cool compared to yesterday. it was hotter than the central valley. i called my dad and he's like, no, it's nice here. >> it's such crazy weather and we're going to continue on the roller coaster. hopefully you'll have a chance to get out and enjoy the weekend. let's get a look at opening day at oracle park. pretty windy as we get the

sunshine and temperatures in the upper 60s at first pitch. those gusts at 20 miles per hour get stronger, so i think at times that makes it feel a little bit cooler out there. but of course, once again, the sunshine will be beaming down on you. so as you're making plans for the weekend, maybe you're going to south lake tahoe, expect temperatures in the upper 60s. a lot of snow has been melting, but at least it is cold during the mornings as we dip into the upper 20s. spending the weekend in san francisco, you might want to check out the cherry blossom festival in japantown. that's going to be going on all day saturday and sunday. some of our team will be out there as well. and at 11:00 we're in the upper 50s. take a look at how beautiful it's going to be as our highs reach into the mid-60s during the afternoon. once again, it's still going to be pretty breezy. if your weekend plans take you to big sur, it's still going to be warm, reaching 81 degrees. but then take a look at how much cooler it will be tomorrow, reaching 72 with sunshine, and then on sunday we're looking at highs in the mid-60s.

paso robles in your weekend plans? today 96 degrees, but there will be cooler weather for saturday into sunday, as we'll see highs reaching into the mid-70s on sunday afternoon. we're going to get a look at our forecast. mike, you're giving us a look at oracle park. what's going on? >> first we've got to give folks heading to work before the game, they have an easy drive. one crash in fremont, that blip on south 680 around mission boulevard with no major slowing. a major break for a lot of folks out of antioch, highway 4, no problem for the interchange. the bay bridge toll plaza as well. getting into the city, a little slowing heading west across the incline. in the city we're really focusing on not right now, the traffic flow is easy, but the midday game at oracle park for

the home opener. on the giants website, major league baseball does have a website for each of the parks. this is for beautiful oracle park. they have all kinds of information. right here it says getting to oracle park and it will give you all kinds of information, directions. you've got parking information with prices and you can even reserve parking, which is a great option. we have information on mass transit. so the roads and the rails are important to you. the rails are especially important. they give you information about those areas which will not be affected by the road closures, which start to happen about noon today for the 1:35 game. we have information on the water because the ferry system takes you over and a beautiful water approach to the beautiful oracle park and maybe you can hang out and catch a home run ball. go giants. back to you. >> go giants. always a lot of fun. it's 5:36 right now. coming up next, the will smith saga.

region of the country. remember, the russians have largely left the area around the capital after a huge military failure there. but they are still in the east and the south. these are highly edited pictures of the situation at the train station, but some may still find them disturbing. ukrainians say the station was hit by a rocket attack and that 39 people are dead, 87 injured. the russians say they didn't do it, but up until last week claimed they hadn't invaded ukraine. back here in the united states, the president has two bills on his desk. one to remove russia's status as a most favored nation for trade. the other to ban the purchase of russian oil. these passed easily through the house and senate with both sides voting in favor by overwhelming margins. the president will hold an event with judge ketanji brown jackson later this morning, a day after the president and judge jackson

watched that vote together. you know there's history being made here. but there is a strange twist. unlike the last few nominations, where a justice was replaced right away because the previous one had passed away, jackson is replacing a judge who is simply retiring. stephen breyer hasn't retired yet. he's not quite finished. some of the upcoming decisions published by the court will be his, not hers. she'll take over in october. of course, any political thriller writer would ask, what if breyer changes his mind. history doesn't supply us with a good answer there, not that we have any reason to think that's anything beyond a good plot for a novel. we're also watching covid really kind of circle the president. the first lady's press secretary has come down with it, nancy pelosi tested positive, and now both senators collins and warn okay say they have covid. both were crucial in the vote

like, that's a great suit. >> it's cal blue. >> ucla blue. >> we love opening day around here, and, luckily, it will be a little cooler out there as opposed to yesterday. it was so warm across the bay area. >> i'm glad the fans are not having to suffer through the mid-80s we had and not much of a wind. today the wind picks up and that's going to help cool it off a little bit. let's get a look at the forecast as we go through the first pitch and opening day, really kicking off the season. our winds will be pretty gusty. take a look at those gusts up to 25 miles per hour. actually, that makes the ball travel farther, so we'll see how the giants can use that to their advantage, as the highs reach into the upper 60s today at oracle park and then cooling down this evening. as we're starting, heading out the door, another record-breaking day and a little bit of a taste of summer. our temperatures will head for

85 degrees in concord, which would most likely set a new record. 83 is the forecast high in santa rosa, and san jose reaching 83 as well. but that most likely will not set a record. as we're taking a look at our highs today, coming down out of those 90s and we continue to cool off going into the weekend with hayward reaching 71 and ma maraga a high of 75 degrees. what's happening is we get a blast of cooler air and even some rain as the cold front moves in on monday and then there could be a second wave of rain, but it looks as of now the rain falls apart as it reaches us on friday. there will be another shot toward the end of next weekend. all our models are trying to get on board with how much rain we're going to get. there's a possibility where we see green that could be about 0.4 of an inch of rain or less and we could see about the same as we compare that to the other computer model.

nice to see some snow in the forecast for if sierra, maybe up to a foot. as we take a look at morgan hill, upper 80s, still really warm. low 70s on sunday and then take a look at how much colder it's going to be on monday. reaching 54 for a high temperature. but it does come back to spring by the middle to end of the week, and as we take a closer look at inland temperatures we go from 80 today to low 60s by monday. big swing. mike, are you seeing any changes like that on the bay bridge? >> no major big swings. we are seeing a little change. you notice the cars, they're not slowing for the name, they're slowing because there's a backup after the toll plaza. the metering lights weren't registering when i looked a few minutes ago. the typical pattern typically lighter than your monday through thursday, for your friday commute. highway 37 shows a little build and so does highway 4. we noticed there may be an
