francisco giants. after an opening day last year filled with so many restrictions and limitations, because of the pandemic, this will be the first opening day that finally feels a little bit more normal. >> here's to hoping. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in oracle park with what we can expect this upcoming season. looking cute in your giants cap. >> reporter: why, thank you. any excuse to wear a cute cap, i am all for it. i probably have the best assignment of the morning. think back to last year, i was standing on the outside of the stadium with my mask talking about the 22% capacity here at the park. but nearly a year later things have greatly changed and it is opening day. if you take a look at your screen, we have a breakdown of things you need to know about what's happening today. the first pitch taking place at 1:35, if you're not aware, giants are playing the marlins and later today you can expect to see the banner, the well-deserved banner drop for winning the national league west last season.
6:05 am
of course, you can watch the game on nbc bay area sports. a lot of excitement. and we're actually joined by someone i spoke with a year ago today. a lot of different conversations now. mr. mario, executive vice president here of business operations. i guess, for you, how is this different than last season? >> last year at this time, as you mentioned, we had 22% capacity. we're at 100% capacity. it's as normal as can be. we have over 40,000 tickets sold. we have a few left if anyone is interested in coming down. opening day, you have to be here. we have a really special ceremony planned. come on down. it's going to be a fabulous day today. opening day, as i always say, life is good again when the baseball season starts. >> is there anything new at the park, anything that you can think of that fans will be excited about? >> one new thing is in center field -- because baseball you like to roam around the ballpark a lot. if you go behind center field, we have a new area called the
6:06 am
boardwalk. there's batting cages, pitching cages, if you want a shoot a few hoops, we have that as well. and you've got to try the jalapeno popcorn or chocolate popcorn. >> i remember you saying you've been here for several years. >> quite a few. >> do you still get excited every opening day? >> i do. getting up this morning, i got up before my alarm. i couldn't wait to get out here. there's something special about the start of a new season. we had a great year yesterday, we're going to celebrate the 107 wins we had. brian mcknight is doing the anthem. we have a few surprises. who is going to throw out the first pitch and raise the flag. be in your seats by 12:45. you don't want to miss the ceremony. if you have time, come on down. we have a few seats left. you've got to be here for this. so it's going to be a real special day. and the weather is going to be fabulous. >> a little warm yesterday, but today things will be a little
6:07 am
cooler. >> absolutely. >> thank you so much for joining me. brian mcknight, chocolate covered popcorn, all of the goods at the park today. opening day is the day that you cannot miss. back to you in the studio. >> and if you heard him say, there's some tickets still available for this day game. that's wonderful. >> let's sell that out. opening ceremony is at 1:00 this afternoon. don't forget, you can watch it all on nbc bay area sports. and of course first pitch, 1:35. >> don't be late. there's always a lot of fun activities. >> i am impressed, they always have a lot of surprises out there. thank you so much. so, let's see if the weather is going to cooperate. checking in with meteorologist kari hall. opening day forecast. >> i think anything is better than yesterday. it was so hot out there and now we get this breeze picking up. don't complain about the wind because it's bringing in cooler air from the ocean. we'll see our temperatures headed for the upper 60s at first pitch. going into the upper 60s throughout the game, up to about
6:08 am
69 degrees, and then starting to cool back down as we go into the evening, as you're heading out of oracle park. take a look at our high temperatures today and how that compares to the record. there still may be records set, especially in santa rosa and concord. other areas are going to be pretty warm for this time of year but not expected to reach those record highs that we saw like yesterday. and, mike, we're looking for the cheapest gas prices we can find. >> we'll check city by city. right now we're tracking richmond, it's the golden seven quick stop on 23rd street, gas is $5.49 there. daly city, cash only, for the arco station on washington street. bring the green and you pay $5.79. same thing at morgan hill, safeway, it has gas for $5.39. getting a break on the traffic flow as well, burning a little more at the bay bridge as the
6:09 am
toll plaza is starting to show buildup. the metering lights were not turned on until about 5:45 this morning. that's the only real slowing we have coming out of the east bay. contra costa, highway 4 as well. it's pretty good compared to yesterday. we had big problems there. now, the rest of the bay, easy, light drive. no drama for highway 101 through san jose. starting back in san martin, we're seeing slowing, lighter because it's friday. back to you. >> thank you so much. still ahead, our special live conversation with "today" show host savannah guthrie and hoda kotb next. >> plus, a looming deadline. the last day to file taxes just ten days away. our consumer team breaks down the help you can get if you're running late. >> and big questions from twitter employees to elon musk and they're going to get some answers. let's take you out to the future for the question how is the stock market going to do today.

happy friday. it is 6:12. let's check out that forecast. i know you've got things to do today. if you're going out for an early workout in gilroy, try to get it in before noon. after that the temperatures are going to be way too hot. we're still going to set some records in some spots, as it feels like summer today. we'll talk about a spring-like weekend coming in in just a few minutes. >> and a friday-like friday on the san mateo bridge. easy drive right now. no delays 101 or 280 along that side of the bay. we'll show you the build in the east bay coming up. >> good morning, and, yes, a happy friday to you. the ceo of twitter told employees they're going to get to ask new twitter board member elon musk anything they want. apparently to ease their concerns. musk tweeted this earlier this week, him smoking marijuana, and the words the next twitter board meeting is going to be lit.
6:14 am
musk was appointed to twitter's board of directors earlier this week after purchasing about 10% of the company's shares. now, twitter employees tell me they're worried about all kinds of things when it comes to musk. they worry musk will have an outsized leadership role. he is, after all, just a board member, that he'll push to have trump reinstated at twitter. they're also concerned about his reputation for firing people who don't agree with him. musk's rocket company, spacex, will launch a capsule containing four astronauts to the international space station in just a couple of hours. this is video of it on the pad. the launch window opens just after 8:00 a.m. our time. now, the astronauts will be the first all-private crew to visit the station. they hope to pave the way for more. >> we have to start somewhere and you go back a century ago when people just were starting to fly on commercial airplanes, same kind of thing. only the wealthy were able to do
6:15 am
it. now look who can fly on an airplane. >> we've seen space tourists before. these are private astronauts who will be up there doing work, doing experiments, that kind of thing, for which nasa will charge them essentially rent of about $33,000 a day, which includes food and life support. that's very important. and also itemized in there, apparently, is the use of the toilet, which apparently is very complicated and therefore costly. >> wow, room and board. >> it's like airbnb. thanks, scott. it is 6:15 right now. let's get a look at that forecast. >> yeah, we're starting out with a little bit of fog moving under the golden gate bridge. isn't this a beautiful shot? but it also gives you a little bit of insight on why the coastal areas will be cooling. not a lot of fog but it's just going to be enough to keep san francisco in the 60s today and well away from that record high of 94 today.
6:16 am
but for some of our inland areas, that really doesn't help us out too much. so santa rosa could still break a record today, even though it will be cooler than yesterday. concord headed for 85. oakland today reaching 77, which is about one degree below a record high temperature, and san jose reaching 83 degrees. in fact, as we take a look at all of our microclimates, still hot in the inland areas. and then going into tomorrow the breeze continues to pick up, that keeps cooler areas near the coast and also helps us out for the inland valleys as well. on sunday we're looking at much cooler temperatures compared to those highs we're coming off of from yesterday. next week it will be so great if we can get these storm systems to hold together, make it through the bay area and bring us rain. it looks like there's three that could move in. the first one on monday, bringing some scattered showers. the second one looks like it's kind of falling apart a bit as it moves in late thursday into friday. there may be another one right
6:17 am
behind that that could bring us rain on sunday. as we run these long-range computer models out, it shows that we could see about 0.4 of an inch of rain or less for those areas in green and there could be about the same as we look at another computer model. once we get more agreement and get closer, we'll be able to fine-tune the details there. looking at ukiah, we have upper 70s today, low 70s tomorrow. look at the change on sunday into monday. it's going to feel much more like winter with only highs in the low 50s with rain coming in. and we'll be slow to rebound through wednesday, but then we can see those temperatures bouncing back for our inland areas. great to see rain because we know we're not supposed to be hitting 90s in early april. what we do need is more rain. we'll be watching that. mike, you're watching a slower drive in san jose. >> it's lighter as we talked about, san martin into morgan hill, just a little bit of speeds going below 50. they clear up towards san jose, heading toward silicon valley,
6:18 am
actually coming down the peninsula and east bay, all moving at speed throughout this morning. a little build for the tri-valley. nothing big in the backup at the toll plaza. vasco road just under 25 minutes from marsh creek down to 580. >> thank you, mike. "today" show hoda kotb and savannah guthrie are on the cover of "good housekeeping" and talking about their journeys to motherhood. >> and they're joining us live this morning. hello, ladies. i love the cover photo. so cute. >> wait, is that kris and laura? >> hi, guys. how are you. >> i was thinking about the irony that we are on "good housekeeping" and how we have no skills. >> i need a backhoe for my dressing room. >> it was very exciting. >> it's so exciting, too. people tune in every morning on "today" show to see who you're interviewing, but this month you're featured in the magazine
6:19 am
talking about what motherhood is like. what do you hope that people take away from this article? >> i think, savannah and i, we both kind of came to motherhood late in life. when you come to something late in life, it's so much sweeter. i remember when bonnie raitt won her grammy, she said it took her 40 years to become an overnight sensation. i think we feel this way about our kids. >> definitely. and i hope that people when they read about our journeys that they'll have hope for theirs as well. i think it's never lost on us that we're so lucky and blessed to have our children, but i think there was a time when neither one of us thought that that was going to be in the cards for us. so i hope it's a note of hope and grace to anybody who might be on that journey themselves. >> we're watching video of you at your photo shoot and people say to us, gosh, it looks like you really do like each other. i would say the same of you two.
6:20 am
>> it's true. >> we really do. >> we can't hide it. >> we had so much fun at the photo shoot. >> we felt like glam girls. >> which never happens in real life. >> they're like don't bring your own clothes. >> leave your shoes outside. >> that is awesome. we felt like beyonce. >> we know you're taking care of your young children, you're on the "today" show, your schedule is so full, but you both have side hustles, too. >> yes. i want to talk about savannah's. >> no, mine is the silliest. she's got a podcast which everyone should add right now and subscribe. if you want to go and get your well filled and -- hoda has an endless appetite of wisdom for the soul and depth and meaning and this podcast is the perfect place for you to elicit all of that. >> i have to tell you, i sat down with a pastor and he is so
6:21 am
transformative. he's a brilliant pastor, he sang "amazing grace" for me while we were visiting, and i think every time you listen to this you feel better afterwards. i feel like so many things we watch and listen to, when you're done, you're like -- >> like junk food, why did i eat that. >> i sat down with thomas rhett, who i felt like i knew really well, and i felt like he was telling me all the secrets in his life. >> and if you haven't heard oprah and maria shriver, this incredible interview all about friendlyship. it's so cool. >> can we please move on to the cooking show? >> i think we're out of time. >> it's called a cooking show. >> why? >> i cannot cook. here's my cooking show. you know what? i've actually learned a lot. i think even people who know how to cook, because i get to be
6:22 am
with all these smart chefs and i'm asking the dumbest questions. i think the show is almost like the butterball hotline just for me. why is the oil bubbling like that and how do i cut that onion? i've learned so much, even shot flay. drew barrymore is going to do the finale. the only way to learn is to do it. >> look up the pancake recipe. it's killer. i even did that one. >> she used bisquick. >> we're always watching. it's so nice to see both of you and thank you so much for taking the time. we know you're busy. >> thanks for having us. >> thanks, laura. >> see you later after "today in the bay." >> moments away. thanks a lot. have a great weekend. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds.

6:31 am
where we usually start our mornings, and you can see the trend going from green to'soing. 84 at 1:00. as we talk about temperatures and where we're headed, we still may set records in santa rosa and concord, as our normal high temperatures are in the upper 60s. we'll see that in san francisco, but oakland just one degree shy of a record. we'll be watching the numbers closely and talk about a cooler weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll check back in with you. into our newsroom in the last few minutes, san jose police released new details on a hit-and-run crash that killed two women. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live this morning. such a tragic time for this family. what are police saying about it? >> reporter: well, laura and kris, as you mentioned, within the past 30 minutes san jose police reiterated they are still looking for this hit-and-run driver but with new information for the public to be on the lookout, what is described as a red pickup truck.
6:32 am
it is a newer model, unknown make. they're looking for a red pickup truck, unknown make, but described as being new. i know that's very broad, but it does definitely narrow it down from what we knew earlier. the driver of this pickup collided with two women around 6:30 last night in the area of ocala avenue near school. both women were walking. new information, police say both women were in a marked crosswalk. paramedics took both of the women to the hospital, where sadly they later died. the driver, there's no description. red pickup truck, last seen traveling northbound on capital expressway. this is the 13th and 14th pedestrian deaths in the city of san jose so far this year. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> very sad. thank you. no criminal charges will be filed against east bay police
6:33 am
officers involved in the death of a man while he was in custody. 26-year-old mario gonzalez died as alameda police were trying to detain him last april. body cameras show an officer with a knee to gonzalez's back for close to five minutes. the coroner's office ruled his death a homicide, but says drugs and other underlying conditions were a factor. the alameda county district attorney says she couldn't conclude the officers were criminally liable for his death. the officers remain on administrapg&e energy bill coul be lower this month. they'll drop the bills by $90 because of a bill credit to combat climate change. how does it work? customers with natural gas bills will get $47.85 off their upcoming bill and folks with electric bills will see a reduction of nearly $40. customers who have both services will get a total credit of $87.
6:34 am
the california climate credit could run through 2030. happening today, the commercial dungeness crab season ends for most of the bay area and the season ends north of sonoma county on april 20th. in both cases the end is coming early because of recent cases of humpback whales found entangled in crab lines. officials say in recent years the number of whale entanglements is on the rise. this year the season started late for the same reason. 6:34 right now. taking a live look outside. this is the san jose skyline. i think we're back to april because yesterday, july tried to push its way in. kari has a look at our forecast for today. >> we don't want the summer heat so early. we like to enjoy things the way they should be. and there should be snow as you head up towards south lake tahoe and the upper parts of the mountains. take a look at how warm it's going to be there, as temperatures reach into the

upper 60s and then we'll see a high tomorrow of about 60 degrees, 53 on sunday. so the cooling trend will be under way. if you're planning to head to the cherry blossom festival, some of our team will be out there tomorrow. starts at 11:00 a.m., goes through 6:00 p.m. we'll start out at about 60 degrees at 11:00, but really nice all throughout the day, with a breezy wind. we'll see highs reaching into the mid-60s. if your weekend plans take you down highway 1, it's still going to be very warm today, reaching 81 degrees in big sur and 72 degrees on saturday. you can see how much cooler it's going to be between today and sunday, only reaching 64 degrees, with some gusty winds. and a look at some of the destinations and places you may be headed. for napa it's going to reach 85 today, 78 degrees tomorrow and then on sunday 63 degrees. much more of the cooler air coming in for san francisco. san jose comes out of those low 80s.
6:36 am
we'll see mid-70s on saturday and 71 degrees on sunday. paso robles, it is still really hot today, reaching 96. if you're going tomorrow it's still going to be warm with mid-80s, but much more comfortable on sunday with breezy winds and highs in the mid-70s. mike, you were showing us the commute to work this morning and also something to watch out for later today. >> right now look forward to your friday drive. easy, light commute. i did spot this coming off of north 283, a little slowing. we'll track that. so far, no major issues reported and it may be on the nimitz getting over there. the arrows point west and that's the direction for your commute. standard, lighter friday commute. same patterns we typically see as folks are traveling toward the bay bridge toll plaza where the backup still is gradually forming. it's a friday, but this will continue to build throughout the morning. here is why. look over here. i have oracle park's website here, the major league baseball
6:37 am
folks have one for all of the major league parks. this one is beautiful oracle park. we're looking ahead toward congestion. on the oracle park page, you scroll down and it says getting to oracle park and it talks about lots of ways to get there. coming by car, it talks about parking and you can reserve a spot. there's prices listed there. you can bike to oracle. it gives you information about the money service and that's the key, mass transit. that's going to really help you avoid the local closures that start today about 11:30 or 12:00, but also the congestion that will be in the area. another option for you, other public transit modes, we have a whole section with public transit options. it's got the timing, maps and it has not only the roads, the rails, but it also talks about the water. remember, on certain days you can take the ferry to the giants games as well. check those out. i've never done that but i've always wanted to arrive. a beautiful view from the city, coming on the water.
6:38 am

senate. president biden and judge jackson watched the vote together. you know the history that's being made here. but there is a strange twist. unlike the last few nominations, which replaced a justice who had passed away, jackson is replacing a judge who is simply retiring and stephen breyer hasn't retired yet. he's not quite finished. so some of the upcoming decisions published by the courts will be his, not hers. she'll take the seat in october. of course, any political thriller worth his or her salt will ask, what happens if breyer changes his mind? history doesn't supply us with a good answer there. not that we have any reason to think that's anything beyond a good plot for a novel. we're also watching covid circle the president. the first lady's press secretary has come down with covid, nancy pelosi tested positive. now both senators collins and warnock say they have covid. both were crucial in the vote for jackson.
