one of several cities reevaluating covid protocols as case numbers start to dramatically tick up in areas. we're going to talk live in a moment with the new white house covid czar dr. ashish zwra who start his new job this wreak. >> the south and plans are watching another storm system that could bring severe weather to several states for the fourth week in a rousmt al has the latest forecast. >> first a stunning revelation overnight from ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy. he says already tens of thousands of civilians have likely been killed in the city of mariupol which has been a major target of russia. and in the meantime the massive russian military convoy has been seen mobilizing in the eastern part of the country. as russia's focus appears to be shifting. molly hunter is in irpin ukraine with the latest this morning. hi molly, good morning. >> that's right. the focus is shifting and the war is ramping up in the east. russia has replaced a key battlefield command we are a man named alexander dubonokov, known as the butcher of syria. accused of carrying out the

and some areas could see the return of mask mandates. nbc's blayne alexander is following that story for us. blaine, good morning >> tom, good morning to you. of course when the cdc shifted its guidance, it said only those who live in high risk areas needed to wear a mask indoors. but now that we're watching the numbers on the rise across the country. some local officials are trying to decide whether it is time to bring those back this morning with the nation's covid case count once again on the rise, some city officials are facing a difficult question, "is it time to make masks mandatory again? in philadelphia where cases up 89%. officials are deciding over the last two weeks 27 states have seen a rise in cases. experts say largely driven by new ba.2 variant accounting for nearly three-fourths of all new cases. >> right now we're watching it carefully and there is concern it is going up.

>> reporter: in new york city cases are up nearly 50% the last two weeks. there's also a 76% increase in the nation's capital three biden cabinet member, new york city mayor eric adams and three members of congress. >> there will be a level of infection. it is not going to be eradicated and it is not going to be eliminated and what's going to happen is we're going to see each individual is going to have to take mare calculation of the risk they want to take. >> reporter: with renewed focus on the nation's case count, experts are questioning whether it is still an effective indicator saying the number of covid cases are dramatically undercounted just over three months ago at the height of the omicron wave the u.s. was performing nearly 2 million tests a day. now that number is down to just over half a million. others with mild symptoms

choosing to skip the tests altogether of course while we're watching those covid numbers on the rise here, wore also seeing them going up in other pars of the world, including china the u.s. state department has now warned americans to reconsider travel to the country. parts of the country, including shanghai over restricted covid precautions. >> they are dealing with extreme lock downs over there. blaine, thank you. >> with covid cases ticking back up we want to turn to a familiar face kbl in a new role dr. ashish jha good morning. are we in the midst of another surge? >> it is a great question, savannah i'm not overly concerned sight now.

case numbers are rising. ba.2, we were expecting this because we saw this in europe a few weeks ago. but the good news we're coming off still very low infection numbers. hospitalizations are the lowest they have been in the entire pandemic so we've got watch this very carefully. i never like to see infections rising i think we've got to be careful but i don't think this is a moment where we have to be concerned. >> the mask mandate for public transportation, airplanes, airports, trains and the like, that is set to expire next week. do you still support that? or do you think that perhaps the mask mandate should be extended for public transportation in light of rising cases? >> this is a really good question this is a decision that the cdc director dr. walensky is going make we're going to see that framework in the next few days and based on that we're going to want to be guided by this decision throughout the entire pandemic we've wanted to make decisions based on the evidence and science. and that is what i expect we'll do again this week. >> let me ask you, does that

mean extending the mask mandate in public transportation is a live option, it is on the table? >> yeah i -- look. this is a cdc decision and dr. walensky will make a hard decision and we'll make a decision collectively on that. >> what about schools? how do schools determine whether or not to have kids back in masks. in the northeast we're seeing cases go up. seeing a lot of kids suddenly turning up with covid. do mask mandates or mask advisories need to come back in schools? >> yeah. so cdc and again, you know, cdc has created a framework i really like and i've been very supportive of it well before i came into this role, which looks

at each community and assesses risks p based on infection, and hospitalizations and capacity. and one of the points is that schools should not be treated differently than the rest of the community. so there are mask mandates in the rest of the community, schools should have them if there are not, they shouldn't be that is what we should be doing. so people can go to the cdc and look up the community risk and that is how we should be deciding in schools as well. >> do you feel you have a good handle on the number of cases? so i do feel we have a pretty good g we've seen public testing sites close. people do private testing or noe subsequently tested positi at all or it doesn't get reported lot of experts feel the case

numbers are severely undercounted right snow. >> we've had undercount throughout the whole pandemic and has always been an issue we have other indicators community based surveys of infections hospitalizations those are still at very very low level. so i do feel we have a pretty good grip of the overall picture but no doubt about it. obviously we're not capturing every infection. especially with people doing more home tests. >> and the president had been in close quarters with people subsequently tested positive nancy pelosi last tuesday at the white house. she was there again, wednesday, and thursday announced she tested positive for covid. not a mask in sight in the pictures is that a mistake? >> the white house has very tight protocols around the president. and rightly so he is the president of the united states. and those protocols have kept the white house safe i would no be surprised if we continue to see infections pop up here and there. but so far i think the key issue is to follow those protocols,

make sure that people are vaccinated, boosted around each other, making sure people are getting tested if we continue do that, i think it is a go ahead way to continue to protect people. >> given the fact the president is 79 years old, does the risk calculus change? >> i think the protocol in the white house is pretty stringent. the one time i -- last time i saw the president, i had to get tested right away. right before i saw him i think that's really critical and i think the white house is going to continue to assess this and base this on data. but i think the protocols right now are really quite effective at protecting the president and others around him. >> dr. ashish jha in his new role as covid czar at the white house. thanks for your time.

championship this may. but he admits his recovery comes first. >> there have been more tough days than easy day and just got to work through 'em. i've got some work to do and looking forward to it. >> tiger also talked about how he's had to adjust his game because of his injuries. >> reporter: yeah, savannah. he did, of course emphasizing the rebuilt right leg took away some of his stamina. he says his team to combat that, had him taking multiple ice baths after rounds and then applying heat before rounds. keep in mind he's got metal plate, pins a rod inside the right leg that robbed him of some mobility. so tiger admitted he had to change his swing up a little to hit certain shots. that's actually added stress to his back which has already undergone multiple surgeries all that to say, tiger i determined to keep competing and we could be seeing him back on the course as soon as next month.

"hello molly." thank you for being here what does it feel like to write smog personal and just get out all out. >> it feels great. i'm very proud of myself it feels ka tharltic i will say. >> cathartic because one of those things i saw was this tragedy that happened to you at a very young age. my mental health, and everything else but tell me about your story. >> right losing a parent when you are a child is very different than losing a parent when you are an adult. and i lost my mom in a car accident when i was 4 years old.

yes my dad was driving, and we were in the car. and my sister mary and i survived and my mother and my little baby sister and cousin were killed. and my dad, it took him a long time to recuperate and learn how to walk again. so it was kind of like my whole life changed in a split second and it was really hard. >> how do you think that impacted your decision as a little girl at some point to want to g get entertainment, make people laugh, comedy. >> such an interesting question because people say well if that didn't happen would you have still gone into comedy and performing i really don't know. i think it gave me a resilience in show biz. nothing could be as bad as when i was little it gave me a certainly bounceability. >> i got four and a half years with my mom on earth i'm grateful i got that time with her it is substantial and thank good i had that and i read that thinking i lost my dad at five and i've been asking why for so long how did you come to this place of such peace and grace? >> yeah that part makes me a little sad but i think when you lose a parent when you are so young.

you have such a sense of like how precious life is and like a kind of urgency. i got well at least i had four years with her that's substantial and so i think, you know, makes me appreciative of people being alive and time with people and just appreciating the time on earth you do have with people. >> yeah, i can agree with that and as parents being a mother must have been something as a father i'm aware of every second when i'm hugging my kid i think about the love my dad must have given me the first five years of life that i don't really remember but a building block to who i am he showed sko much love. >> and getting to live way beyond the years my mother gives me such a sense of comfort and doing all those things she didn't get to do and it is a wonderful feeling. >> just quick how did you make the transition from ohio and

then coming to new york and what would become snl >> i really struggled. it was not easy getting on "saturday night live." i did, i went to nyu drama school and did my own stage show called the rob and molly show. and worked on my characters. it was a lot of hustling i worked in restaurants. i was very driven, you know, to achieve. i worked really hard. >> you roadway where i a lot about the rejection. lot of rejection for people whew want to do what you did, especially in the arts, how do they handle that rejection? >> i think it is so great in life if you just do what you are passionate about even, i remember getting to a point where a friend of mine got a part sooner and i was so jealous why did he get ha and i can't get anything but then i took a walk and i parade to god and i was like why god i'm having such a heart time and i thought even -- at least i'm out here in pursuing my dreams trying for for what i want
