fire, apple tv, and online. first, let's start with a look across the bay area, a nice start to our wednesday morning. kari is keeping tabs on another chance of rain. >> yeah, we're going to see that starting to move into the north bay later tonight. most of us not seeing it until tomorrow. you can leave the umbrella at home. oakland, heading off to work with temperatures in the low 40s. we will see a few clouds in the mix. still a breezy wind and kind of a cool day, even for this time of year. highs reaching into the upper 50s in oakland. a high of 59 in novato, 57 in san francisco, up to 60 in mountain view and low 60s for the south bay, as well as the sought county. we'll talk about the cool weather and return of rain in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. this morning the mma fighter accused of attempted murder is releasing a new message for supporters. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from morgan hill. the man he allegedly tried to

kill will be in goularte is facing felony charges of he's expected to enter a plea in the building behind me at 9:00. we're outside santa clara county superior court in morgan hill. he's 43 years old. he's been out on bail since february with the condition that he stay at his home in morgan hill with an electronic monitoring bracelet and the understanding he's not allowed within 100 yards of any child under the age of 14. goularte is accused of molesting a young family member of cain velasquez, a well-known mma fighter. in late february velasquez allegedly fired a gun into a truck carrying goularte and hit his 63-year-old stepfather, who survived. velasquez was back in court yesterday. dozens of his supporters crowded the courtroom. >> when you have a family, that's your support.

i probably would have done the same thing. i'm a father. i have kids. >> reporter: for the first time since his arrest, velasquez posted a message to his fans on twitter. he thanks his family and supporters and wrote, to the true victims of this case, may god give you the strength to come forward. though it is most difficult to relive the pain that has happened to you, in speaking the truth, justice will be served and your own true healing will start. reporting live in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. happening now on the east coast, an all-out manhunt is under way. this is for the gunman who shot and injured ten people in a new york city subway train. so here is a live look at the scene. this is in brooklyn's sunset park neighborhood. of the ten people shot saturday, five of them seriously injured. now, 13 others were also injured in that attack, but everyone expected to survive. police are now looking for someone they're calling a person of interest. he's identified as 62-year-old

frank james. now, authorities say that he has addresses listed in philadelphia and washington, d.c. investigators say james recently rented a van, this is parked near the scene of that shooting. a $50,000 reward now being offered to track him down. one former new york city police commissioner telling the "today" show that a gun found at the scene by officers is believed to have been dropped by that shooter. >> why the person dropped it, i think the investigation will bear that out. a lot of times in a situation like this, when things are happening and adrenaline is involved, what you think is going to happen doesn't quite play out the same way. >> now, also ahead on the "today" show this morning, an interview with new york city's mayor eric adams. investigators say that adams is interest mees are trying to locate. this morning ukrainian refugees remain stuck in the middle of a war. no humanitarian corridors will be open today. leaders are accusing russian forces of violating a cease-fire

and blocking evacuation buses. this is video about 45 miles west of kyiv. russian troops took the villages surrounding it but were held back from the city ner by ukrainian soldiers. russia says more than 1,000 ukrainian marines have surrendered near mariupol. they continue to warn the use of chemical weapons remains high. the cost of living is hitting american consumers hard. a new harris poll on behalf of bloomberg news finds 84% of americans plan to cut spending as inflation is at a 41-year high. people are paying more for everything from housing costs to eggs. laura, and americans are feeling the impact of rising inflation. president biden is turning to executive action to help tackle the problem. but he's also calling on members of congress to do more. republicans argue that it's democrat-backed policies that are driving up inflation. from the gas pump to the grocery store, americans are paying more. figures show consumer prices rose 8.5% from a year ago. >> sometimes you have to make a choice on what bill is going to not get paid so that you can make sure you've got food on the table. >> reporter: food prices up nearly 9% from last year. gas prices skyrocketed 48%. the president pointing the finger at pandemic disruptions and russia's war on ukraine. >> your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a

reduce costs for americans. >> really hope things change. thank you so much, brie. 6:07 this morning. new details on a hit-and-run and killed two women last week in san jose. police this morning are still on the manhunt for that driver. we're also learning the story behind the victims. loved ones recently setting up a gofundme for narinder kaur. she's on the left there. and her daughter, kuljit is on the right. police say the two women were hit and killed in a crosswalk on ocala avenue on april 7th. kuljit's two daughters posted they arrived in the bay area one week ago from india to live with their grandmother. a traffic safety leader says that san jose's speeding is a huge problem. >> this year we're up to 26 community members who have lost their lives on our streets. by comparison last year at this time, 11 people had died on our streets.

>> city leaders have allocated $6 million over the next two years to make changes to san jose streets to make them safer. a gofundme page has so far for the two raised $70,000. new help coming on the peninsula for those struggling most to make it in the bay. leaders are break ground later this morning on san mateo county's first navigation center at bloom quist avenue just north of highway 101. it will provide support services for people trying to transition to permanent housing. the county received a $55 million grant to build that center. it is 6:09 on your wednesday morning. look at the sun coming up over the bay area, making way for a very nice morning. kari has a look at changes ahead as well. >> it's a little chilly. we've had these mornings the last couple of days where we dip into the 30s in some spots. it is 39 in santa rosa and martinez and we dip down to 36 in scots valley. also mostly 40s for many other spots as you get ready to head out the door.

with this cool start you do want to maybe wait another couple of hours before going out on that walk, if you want the warmer weather, but as you can see with our trend today in pittsburg, if you're going to be outside, you are not going to see much of a change from the morning into the afternoon. this cool weather wraps up with some rain. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. you're tracking some cheaper gas prices. >> we're keeping a close eye on locations where you might be able to find a couple of cheaper spots and for pacifica it will be the chevron on 505 linda boulevard, gas is $5.59. in alameda the arco station on park street. gas is $5.35. in san pablo gas is $5.09 a gallon at the san pablo gas station. so just a couple spots if you live in those areas, they may be a better option. now, dublin right now, it's getting busy along 580. no crashes to tell you about there. it's just the regular morning

yesterday president biden announced the administration will allow gas stations to keep selling the so-called winter blend of ethanol into the summer, despite the alcohol heavy fuel contributing to summer smog. now, a good question, if we put more corn into the fuel, what does that mean for food? we'll find out. though keep in mind only about 1% of the nation's corn is eaten by people. it's mostly animal feed, which could push meat prices higher. the san francisco company square which changed its name to block, but nobody remembers that, is moving its headquarters out of san francisco to nowhere. it will instead move to a, quote, distributed work model where people just work and live wherever it is they work and live. no more office. a twitter investor suing elon musk saying musk illegally profited on twitter's stock because musk delayed telling anybody he had purchased 9% of the game. he was supposed to, those are the rules. musk was required to tell

everyone he had purchased 5% or more. that happened on march 14th. but he didn't tell anybody until april 4th. the latest inflation numbers, the producer price index, are just out moments ago, showing us exactly what we expected, the cost for manufacturers and other product producers up 11.2% from this time last year. that's the most since records were kept. yesterday, of course, we got the consumer price index showing much the same. we talked about it's too much money, chasing too few things. you can't get people into the factories to make the things. you're going to talk about baby formula. you can't get people to make it and distribute it and stock the shelves and then the price goes up. >> exactly, to the extent they're having to ration it. the baby formula, four major retailers are rationing purchases of baby formula as recalls and supply chain issues force more parents, they're scrambling just to find it. target, kroger, cvs health and

balance greens are limiting sales of baby formula online and in stores. a target folks person tells the washington street general they have a five per day purchase limit in most states. it follows a recent recall tied to bacterial infections in certain baby formula products made by the company abbott nutrition. trending this morning, not just cars going eco-friendly, some toys are heading down the same road. >> mattel has new matchboxcars, that includes the tesla reducester that is made from recycled materials and it's out with mega box green town, which is a widely offered toy lin certified as carbon neutral. you know what? somebody not doing their part last night. i was trying to go to bed, but i had posted this on twitter last night. pip just wouldn't go to bed.

>> didn't you bottle some of that up? >> that energy, i kept tossing it trying to wear him out. >> i'm not done, mom. >> as i was walking out the door, he looked at me and went back to bed. >> now you want to sleep. >> he's a spoiled little rescue there. >> i've got to wear him out. >> trying to do that today, because tomorrow it's going to be kind of wet out there. so we're seeing the return of that rain in the forecast, which of course we do desperately need. let's get a look at how cool it's been, where we're headed today and how that compares to normal. in santa rosa we're going to reach 58 degrees, but what's normal for the middle of april? 69 degrees. so we are seeing cooler weather continue for us for today. concord heading for 61, san francisco 56 degrees, 57 in oakland, and san jose about 8 degrees cooler than what's normal for this time of year. we're getting another shot of cool air coming in from the

north, scattered showers around eureka and reading and snow in some of the upper elevations. by the time that gets to the north bay later this evening, we'll have more clouds moving in. spotty showers around my night for the north bay. most of us won't see that until early tomorrow morning and into tomorrow afternoon. it doesn't look like we get much in san jose. it falls apart the farther it moves south. when we take a look at the overall rainfall totals, it could be about a quarter inch or more for the north bay, and then you see in dublin it's about 0.1, san jose a few hundredths of an inch of rain. we could see that as well in the peninsula. looking ahead to the weekend, we get this round of rain coming through quickly and then more widespread rain on friday into saturday. and it does move out in time for easter, but we could continue an active weather pattern with more rain going into next week. that's really great to see, especially with the dry

conditions we've seen and the low sierra snowpack, with another 16 inches possible for tahoe city over the next few days. if you will be going there this weekend, heads-up that the roads are going to be very slippery as we see that snow coming down. and for us, we're seeing widespread rain on saturday, highs in the mid-60s. keep that in your plans. it's going to be a little wet off and on. sunny on sunday, we keep the mild weather into the start of next week. >> the commute is starting to build, it's getting busy, but no big accidents to tell you about. however, we're noticing big slowing along westbound 80 near the bay bridge, 13 minutes. notice slowing along westbound 580 from grant line road, about 25 minutes. it's getting busy. back to you. >> thank you. 6:21 right now. a roaring fire burning out of control in southern california. coming up next on "today in the bay," what we're learning about the building that's burning.

6:24. welcome back. now to a follow-up, fire crews are still at the scene of a massive fire at a four-story hotel in southern california. this started last night along highway 101 in ventura county. this video was shot by someone driving by. the driver says that he could actually feel the heat in his car. so far, no injuries have been reported and a majority of that fire is out. crews say due to damage, they cannot safely go inside to completely knock down the flames. the hotel was under construction at the time. there's no word on a cause for that fire. next monday's tax deadline may be making you a little nervous. experts say you should be less concerned about being audited. in fact, the number of tax returns the irs audits is far lower than it was a decade ago. with irs agents now working through a massive backlog tied

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson live for us in marin this morning. this year's eighth grade trip follows two straight years where they couldn't go anywhere because of covid regulations. >> reporter: yeah, really,

really tough story to hear. i know that eighth grade trip for so many students, something they were looking forward to. it was canceled for two years. now they were able to go. but, unfortunately, several dozen students came back and tested positive for covid. now, in the past two days alone, as many as 50 students have notified school leaders of positive at-home tests. it's not clear which schools the students did attend, although we know two schools here in marin county. we know the school has contacted county health leaders with information on positive cases. a majority of the cases are mild and a majority of the infected students are vaccinated, with about half of the students having their booster shot as well. and we have just received a copy of the letter the parents received. in it the county health department lays out return-to-school guidelines. they say anyone infected with covid should stay home for at least five days after the start of symptoms, isolation can end

if symptoms end or if there is a negative covid test. all of this comes as several cities, including d.c., are seeing an uptick in cases. just this week 72 people tested positive for covid in d.c. at an annual dinner. among them, several members of president joe biden's cabinet, as well as new york mayor eric adams. in the last 24 hours it was announced that two d.c. area universities, american and george washington universities, reinstating their mask mandates because of an increase of covid cases. but back out here live around 3:00 today, both the county health department, as well as the county board of education, hosting a joint meeting over zoom for parents, as well as anyone that may have come in contact with students that went on that eighth grade d.c. trip. again, 3:00 you can receive information for the zoom link at marinschools.org. cierra johnson for "today in the

bay." >> i'm sure a lot of parents will be on the zoom call. i'm hoping all those kids are healthy in just a few days. thank you. it is 6:33 right now. we have new details this morning in the mass shooting ten days ago in downtown sacramento. authorities have identified another suspect. take a look at your screen right now. investigators say 27-year-old mtula payton was among at least five people who opened fire. payton has not been taken into custody at this time. a pair of brothers already arrested, they have been. they're the only two suspects now in custody tied to the shooting. six people died, 12 others were injured. police believe it all started as a dispute among rival gangs. and in just a few hours testimony resumes in the criminal fraud trial for former theranos executive sunny balwani. prosecutors are now trying to establish, this is through whistleblower testimony and text

messages, balwani's influence on decisionmaking. the defense argues he acted more like an investor and left decisionmaking to other leaders, including his ex-girlfriend, elizabeth holmes. happening now and confirmed within the past hour, new york city police now calling the man south in connection with yesterday's subway attack a suspect. the manhunt continues to find him. police say a van tied to the shooting found near the scene was rented by frank james, the man you see here. ten people were shot, 13 others injured, and this morning we're learning more about james and the victims caught up in the violence. "today in the bay's" jay gray joins us live outside of the brooklyn subway station where the attack took place. jay, that neighborhood, understandably, still shaken. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, laura. and under heightened security, as you would expect, both here on the street and in the subway

station as well. it's not clear from new york police why frank james went from a person of interest overnight to a suspect this morning. we do know that federal agents have joined in the investigation as they continue to try and gather evidence and to try and track james down. [ screaming ] >> reporter: a day after a violent attack unleashed on a crowded subway car, police are searching for this man. >> i'm going to go ahead and cut this video short. >> reporter: 62-year-old frank r. james, who has posted dozens of bigoted tirades on social media. after a gunman tossed two smoke grenades on the floor of the n train and then opened fire. >> ten people were injured by gunfire and an additional 13 were either injured as they pushed to get out of the train station or suffered smoke inhalation. >> reporter: none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. investigators say the suspect fired 33 shots before his weapon apparently jammed.

coverage which starts on monday. 6:38 this morning. a beautiful shot to start out the day. this is santana row in san jose. it's nice and clear there, but we can expect some rainfall in parts of the bay area today. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the expected rain. >> most of us can leave the umbrella at home today. the rain is still well to the north of us. it will start to make its way into the north bay later tonight. it's nice to see rain in our forecast as we go hour-by-hour. by 4:30, 5:00, we're starting to see it in ukiah, northern sonoma county. we'll see more widespread rain for the north bay shortly before midnight and much of the bay area starting to see light showers moving in around sunrise tomorrow, continuing to spread in as we go throughout the day. and then it tapers off on friday, but we do have more rain in the weekend forecast and we'll talk about that in a few minutes. starting to see the commute building in spots. >> yeah, take a look in oakland, both directions, it is moving

but it's just a little bit slow. and also visibility on the san mateo bridge, a live look right now. keep in mind, it is still windy. chp has issued a wind advisory for the bridges. a look at speed sensors, we're moving along. we do have a little bit of slowing northbound and southbound 880, but something to look ahead to just to keep in mind, if you're going to be traveling through fairfield there's going to be a caltrans project that is going to close eastbound 80, with the eastbound connecter ramp to southbound 680, and also eastbound state route 12 to eastbound i-80 and this is all set to reopen again at 5:00 a.m., so you might encounter detours in the fairfield area. it's also busy on the bay bridge. back to you. >> thank you. new for you this morning, b.a.r.t. hits a new pandemic ridership record. nearly 141,000 people took b.a.r.t. yesterday, the highest amount of riders since service was first rolled back when the pandemic took hold.

right now at 4:44 on your wednesday morning, it's going to be kind of a cool day for getting outside, going to the park. we're looking at the east day, pittsburg right now in the mid-40s, the mid-50s at 10:00, and reach about 60 degrees with the sun peeking out from behind the clouds. parts of the bay area getting ready for rain tonight. we'll talk about the timeline coming up. >> let's take a look at your bridge drive times throughout the bay area. westbound 580 toward the richmond bridge, about 12

because it's becoming clearer and clearer that putin is just trying to wipe out the idea of being able to be a ukrainian. >> now, the semantics of whether this is a genocide or not aside, there are no questions there are atrocities and war crimes against thousands of ukrainians, including women and children. biden also not shy about calling putin a war criminal. you'll remember biden called putin to be deposed going off script in poland a couple weeks ago, saying putin cannot remain in power. putin held a press conference earlier this week where he said he was dedicated to seeing the ukraine war through. now, what exactly that means, that's not clear, but it seems the russians want to take the eastern part of ukraine. they already control and keep it forever. pictures from a ukrainian newspaper showing the leaders of poland, estonia, lithuania, latvia, arriving in ukraine. these are nato countries. putin no doubt seeing these pictures, too. some things to watch out for.

>> i'm going to have to go on there and check out the coat. a coat will be needed this morning for a lot of people. >> it's been so cold lately, and you not only need it for the morning, but throughout the day. i'm not even taking it off once i step outside. take a look at our live view at the golden gate bridge. you can see the clouds starting to move in and take a look at our highs. what i'm forecasting today versus what's average for the middle of april, santa rosa, we're up to 58 for a high temperature today, but normally we're seeing highs in the upper 60s. concord about 10 degrees cooler than normal and even cooler than what we should see in san francisco. oakland reaching 57, but the average high is about 66. and in san jose we're looking at a high of 61 degrees. so what's happening here is we have more clouds arriving with rain that's farther to the north of us. another shot of chilly air. let's take it hour by hour. we start to see rain coming into the north bay at about 5:00 for

santa rosa on northward. and then we start to see the rain spreading into the rest of the north bay, right around midnight. now, most of us see rain in the peninsula and east bay until tomorrow morning and it will take a while before it makes it down to san jose. when it does, we're not really expecting much, as we take a look at the forecast and what could fall for us in terms of rain, it's going to be a much bigger deal for the north bay where there could be about 1 inch of rain for ukiah. concord could get 0.25 inch of rain and dublin will see about 0.1 of an inch of rain. it drops off as it moves further south. but the good news is there's more rain behind this. if you don't get it tomorrow, there looks to be more widespread rain on saturday and that's also going to linger into late saturday afternoon. sunday is dry, and we do have more storm systems behind that for next week. let's talk about snow, because this is going to be a great deal

for us. looking at the possibility of maybe 2 feet of snow in twin bridges and even more for kingvale. south lake tahoe could get about 11 inches of snow. this will be a nice boost to the extremely low sierra snowpack that's happening right now. and the cool weather continues. it does get a little milder by friday, peeks of sunshine. saturday it looks like the rain is just going to pretty much be off and on all day. easter sunday it's bright, sunny, 70 degrees. i don't know if it gets any more perfect than that. san francisco still breezy, highs in the mid-50s today and o >> any backups on the road? >> we're starting to notice a couple of hot spots. the first one is in the east bay, southbound 880 there's a crash being reported. it's starting to cause delays here where the yellow and red are showing up. also noticing delays in other spots. but just a quick reminder, if you're going to be heading to

of her parents. you can see her photo on the left. according to police, her mother, 21-year-old veronica ramirez took her yesterday afternoon from a mountain view apartment without the father's permission. she was last seen in a newer white compact suv with dark tinted rear windows. police say she may be heading to san bernardino county or perhaps out of state. an amber alert is not being issued at this time, but if you notice anything, call mountain view police. a manhunt is under way for a gunman who shot and injured people in new york city in the subway. of the ten people shot yesterday, five are seriously injured. 13 others also injured in that attack. but everyone is expected to survive. and confirmed within the last hour, new york city police no longer calling 62-year-old frank james a person of interest, but rather a suspect in this attack.
