we are seeing the peak of the storm that has been coming through over the last hour or so. rain in san jose. gusty winds out of the south. if you hear some of the rumbles outside some of that is from the airport as flights are taking off north to south this morning. towards the tri-valley it is coming down. you see there the roadway view. here is the stormranger view. right there, dublin, pleasanton, the 580-680 interchange, likely seeing ponding on the road. a let up in the rain around marin county. san francisco a bit of a break. look at this, more showers inbound and you see the rain throughout the south bay here. as we go through the next few hours the majority of the widespread rain continues to move to the east. from here we are watching scattered showers heading into the afternoon. a closer look at the hour-by-hour forecast in about 15 minutes. kira. >> thanks, rob. see you soon. we are going to give you a live look at palisades tahoe, covered in snow. if you are headed to tahoe for the weekend, they are under a winter weather advisory. chain controls are in effect

parents, they're rapists, pedophiles. >> reporter: the man went on to say they stole the children. they got between the man and their children who were now crying but the man got more vulgar with his comments. the police were called and the train was delayed before the man refused the leave. >> he said he would die before he got off the train. we knew it was scary but it was deadly serious at that point. >> the couple has an adopted son and 5-year-old foster daughter. they say they've dealt with homophobic stranger before but they say the word pedophile and rapist is part of a larger narrative, one seen on mainstream news. >> we have seen it from the desantis camp and coming from online and legislators and fox news and we have seen those talking points and it gets closer and closer until it is in our real lives. >> have you seen it before?

>> reporter: nbc political analyst larry gerston has been tracking the data in the u.s. in recent years and he says there seems to be a core group of people expressing discriminatory belief against these groups. >> i can't tell you what causes it, but we know there's this uptick. the uptick, of course, will be upsetting to those people who are impacted and other people who feel it is just as wrong. >> reporter: amtrak tells nbc news in a statement that it strongly condemns this reprehensible act of hate and that it is conducting a full investigation on this incident. it added that it is looking into potentially banning the unidentified man from amtrak. the two dads and their children are on their way back home to los angeles. they said amtrak treated them to a private cabin for the return trip where no one can harass them. thom jensen, "today in the bay." . turning now to new covid

subvariants. the world health organization says it has found two new strains of omicron, ba.4 and ba.5. they are linked to cases in europe and africa. they come during a global surge in new cases linked to the highly contagious ba.2 subvariant, which is still the dominant strain worldwide. cdc data shows that ba.2 accounts for 85% of the new cases here in the u.s. so far the new ba.4 and ba.5 variants do not seem to be more contagious nor more severe than the original variant of omicron. a grim new assessment on the humanitarian crisis in ukraine, on the casualties in some of the country's hardest hit areas. police say they found the bodies of more than 900 civilians in the region surrounding kyiv following russia's withdrawal. this comes as the u.s. says two missiles have hit a russian warship. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the

latest from kyiv. >> reporter: over night russia says it struck a plant in kyiv that made and repaired ukrainian missiles, the blast captured on surveillance cameras and coming hours after russia's key warship sank. a senior defense official says the u.s. has now determined the warship, named after russia's capital, was hit by two ukrainian neptune missiles in the black sea. it is not clear why the air defense systems did not kick in. russia acknowledges there was a fire on board but denied a missile strike. nearby, russia has intensified the assault on mariupol, the battle entering a critical stage and the ukrainians defiant. >> we expect to bury as many russian soldiers as possible. but the key sea port city could fall to russia in days, triggering the onslaught on the eastern donbas region. in an interview, president zelenskyy spoke bluntly. when some leaders ask me what weapons i need, i need a moment

to calm myself because i already told them the week before. it is groundhog day. i feel like bill murray. in chernihiv northeast of kyiv, a massive effort is under way to get humanitarian aid to towns cut off. among those coordinating, victoria who we spoke with weeks ago as russian forces closed in. she is now safe and we met her in person so she could show us how she survived for weeks in this cellar. >> reporter: home people were in here? >> we were 20 people. >> reporter: she is furious with the russian soldiers but is grateful the ukrainian troops held them back. >> i came up to him, i thanked them and i started to cry because i felt that these people saved us. >> that was gabe gutierrez reporting from kyiv. back here locally, firefighters rescued a hiker stuck on the side of a cliff. this all unfolded around 6:00

last night on a steep cliff below palisades park in daly city. crews had to rappel more than 500 feet down and hoist the hiker back up. fortunately, that hiker was not hurt. turning now to the excitement building for today's warriors playoff series starting against the denver nuggets. we have seen a lot of nba playoff games in oakland but never at chase center. that all changes tonight. even more exciting because steph curry is expected to return to the line-up after his foot injury. welcome back. it is 7:12 on your saturday morning. it is a wet one out there. meteorologist rob mayeda details a small break for easter sunday and the rain continues. he will be along in a few minutes. first, the tax deadline is coming up. the day after tomorrow, monday, april 18th. if you are still not prepared, you can get six extra months to file. consumer investigator chris chmura shows how easy it is. >> if you are not ready to file your 1040 tax return, it is okay. there's no reason to panic. the irs will let you file for an automatic extension. let's look at how. the good news is everyone can file electronically, either using tax software or at irs.gov. just look for the link that says "free file." you are basically filling out form 4868. it is really simple. just nine questions.

they don't even ask why you are going to miss the deadline. you submit it in minutes. just make sure to file before april 18th. the irs will only contact if your request is denied. otherwise filing the form gives you until october 15th to file a return. easy. getting an extension to file your return is not an extension to pay. the irs says you must estimate your tax liability on form 4868 and should also pay any amount due by april 18th. so what about state income taxes? well, here in california the same rules apply. actually easier. the state says we give you an automatic six-month extension to file your return and no application is required. but the same as d.c., sacramento wants its money now. you have to pay what you owe by april 18th to avoid penalties and interest. >> chris chmura for us this morning. thanks, chris. twitter is trying to block elon musk from buying the

company outright. the board of twitter unanimously approved adopting what is called a poison pill strategy. they adopted it yesterday. what it is is a one-year plan allowing existing twitter shareholders to buy more shares at a discount. this would dilute musk's stake in the company. that plan would kick in if musk's 9% stake grows to 15%. >> they're forcing anyone who wants to buy the company to negotiate directly with them rather than just buying twitter shares on the open market. >> musk still could take over if enough shareholders vote to dismiss the current twitter directors. twitter, meanwhile, says the board is still open to discussing the sale of the company. and a live look for you at the oakland coliseum this morning. and what you don't see from this angle is an unusual problem with feral cats. coliseum managers say there are about 100 cats living around the

coliseum. they cannot just remove the cats because more likely would move in. instead, the coliseum authority is trying to manage the felines which spaying and neutering the adults while realizing the cats are actually helping the coliseum grounds by keeping other rodents away. the a's and coliseum management are hoping to work with oakland management service to catch kittens and put them up for adoption. happening today, a retirement party for the national park services' 100-year-old park ranger, betty reid soskin, who retired two weeks ago, finally taking it easy after 15 years as a park ranger. when she was asked about her favorite memories with the national park service soskin cited introducing president barack obama at the lighting of the national christmas tree in d.c. the public is invited to the retirement party today. it is at 1:00 p.m. at richmond's historic craneway pavilion. trending this morning, if

transitioned over to the east bay right now. you see the cloudy skies. rain for now has let up a little bit in san francisco but you are about on see from our stormranger, mobile doppler radar, more rain set to move into san francisco in the next 15 minutes. 57 in oakland. it is a warm start to the morning. southwest winds at 21 miles per hour. this is where a lot of the downpours have been over the last 30 minutes or so. out towards the tri-valley. 54 in dublin. in san jose, 55 degrees. temperatures later on as the sun breaks out, it is not going to warm up a whole lot. we are looking at upper 50s to low 60s for highs later on. on the west side of the santa cruz mountains also. here is the next batch of rain about to move into san francisco, reaching the golden gate, getting back into marin county. there you see some of the heavier showers lifting away from the tri-valley and the inland east bay valleys. north bay right now, just some scattered showers. i think we will see the trend from widespread rain and downpours to scattered showers as we move you forward through about the mild morning. notice a few of the scattered

showers, clearing line in the central bay around 12:00 to 1:00, and then by 4:00 and 5:00 this evening or late afternoon and evening the skies clear and we will see kind of a chilly start by tomorrow morning. we have mid 50s to start off the morning around the bay area. we will see scattered showers through about midday and then clearing and breezy as the showers move off to the east, highs ranging from the upper 50s around san francisco and oakland to low 60s in san jose. now, tomorrow morning, easter sunday will feel a lot different outside. almost 20 degrees cooler. cold enough for patchy frost in the north and east bay valleys as you plan the early morning easter egg hunt. you will want a nice coat for the morning, but the afternoon should finish off warmer tomorrow, mid to upper 60s for most of the bay area. monday into tuesday, rain chance number one. rain chance number two comes wednesday. thursday into friday, you are starting to see the trend in the seven-day forecast. daily chances of rain once we get past easter sunday. if all of it adds up, especially

for the northbound, you see the areas in red, one to two inches of rain, maybe a little more. western sonoma county, this will be spread out monday through next saturday, probably looking at less rain obviously into san jose and the santa clara valley. lake tahoe, 37 degrees. we have a winter weather advisory today. better travel conditions for easter sunday. look at the sierra snow totals. more than half a foot of snow coming down with today's storm. by the end of be closing in 2 to 3 feet of snow across the sierra. that's a welcome sight this late in the rain and snow season. so for today rain changing to scattered showers. clearing for the afternoon tomorrow. perfect timing for easter sunday, it is the one dry day in the seven-day forecast tomorrow. warmer to wrap up the weekend. the monday rain late afternoon and evening, so i think monday morning will be dry. as we head through the week, heaviest rain is likely around wednesday and thursday. stay tuned as the winds pick up

ski masks and they were in a black two-door car. one of the suspects accused of killing a retired police officer in oakland last year was in court yesterday. shadihia mitchell is charged with murder, attempted robbery and assault with a firearm. retired police officer kevin nashita was working as a security guard for a local tv news crew last november. he was shot by the group trying to steal the news team's camera. he died a few days later. his widow was at the alameda county courthouse. >> i miss kevin very much. it is really hard, but i live day by day and i have got to be strong for him. >> two suspects have been arrested. a third, laron gilbert, is still on the run. firefighters rescued a hiker stuck on the side of a cliff.

good morning. this microclimate weather alert to start your weekend due to the roaming downpours and breezy p conditions we are waking up with. san francisco, 55 degrees. all of the city cameras getting a free rinse cycle this morning. 57 in oakland. mild temperatures around the tri-valley. 54 degrees in dublin. we will take you into san jose where you are starting to see a few sunny breaks out there, which hints at the transition from widespread rain to scattered showers and eventually some clearing later on. around san jose a break, but we have rain around mountain view and palo alto that is moving off to the east. you see the rain around the peninsula up towards san francisco, crossing the bay, right across the bay bridge towards emeryville and hayward. that is heading your way in the next 10 to 15 minutes. as we move out of marin county away from mill valley, up

towards santa rosa, a lot of the rain has moved off towards the east. the trend of widespread rain to scattered showers will be the trend through at least through about midday. you see here through about 12:00, still cloudy skies around the south bay. showers moving to the east around we should see clearing once we head to the late afternoon and evening. so, yes, a rainy and windy start to the day. then we transition to isolated showers around lunchtime. by 3:00 and 4:00 this afternoon, highs today only upper 50s around san francisco to oakland and low 60s closer to san jose. we dry out later this afternoon. we will be dry and cold tomorrow morning. heads up, could have patchy frost in some of the valleys, especially around the north bay and the inland east bay for your easter sunday morning. and then sunday afternoon, more sunshine and a warmer finish to the weekend. highs in the upper 60s to near 70 actually down towards morgan hill, but sunday being dry is the exception to the rule. more rain into monday night into tuesday. another round comes in wednesday into early thursday, and then more opportunities for rain off and on thursday into friday.

so if we add up the seven-day rain totals for next week, you see a lot of red in the northbound. we could see 1 to 2 inches of rain. areas north of interstate 80 will fare better and we are seeing a lot of snow. you see it on the camera lens. 33 degrees. over half a foot of snow falling today and moving through next week we could look at 2 to 3 feet of late season snow. a rainy start followed by a sunny, breezy and cool finish today. tomorrow, easter sunday, that's pretty good timing. it is the only day without raindrops on the seven-day forecast. you see easter sunshine, a little warmer. next round comes in monday into tuesday and another wednesday into thursday and friday morning changing to rain. here it is april and we've not seen a seven-day forecast like this all winter into spring, so a lot of opportunity to make up the rainfall deficits,

welcome back. it is just shy of 7:48 on your saturday morning. a heavenly glow on this holy saturday and first full day of passover, as we look over a wet san jose. rob mayeda says we will get a break from the rain this afternoon and into tomorrow. police are looking for the thieves who stole from a small business in oakland. it happened early yesterday morning at the san pablo liquor store. investigators say thieves crashed a truck into the front of the store. look at that. they tried to steal an atm but they couldn't pull it off. instead, they took alcohol and cigarettes and took off running. could we soon use our breaths to test for covid? the fda gave emergency approval for what it says is the first device that can detect covid in

breath samples. the test uses a breathalyzer machine, and it identifies chemicals associated with the virus and it gives a result in less than three minutes. the fda says it was 91% accurate at identifying positive test samples and nearly 100% accurate at identifying negative samples. people who do get a positive result should follow up with a pcr test. and new this morning, a business is expanding to napa and it is helping pour new life into other family-owned wineries along the way. sidecar tours, as it is called, is now booking food, wine and brewery tours for guests. it is teaming up with locally owned wineries looking to bounce back following the pandemic. our "today in the bay" producers got a firsthand look at the adventure awaiting us. take a look. >> we love the out doors and we

make its way through the bay area, make sure you've downloaded our free nbc bay area app. you can track live radar and find out exactly when the storm will hit your neighborhood. let's check in now with meteorologist rob mayeda with one last look at the forecast. i mean it was pouring earlier this morning. it seems like it is dissipating a little bit now. >> a little bit, yeah. the peak of the storm really from about 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. right now we are starting to moving into scattered showers around the bay area, but still a few areas seeing some downpours. the rain about to move into san jose where it is muggy and mild this morning. 56 degrees, windy, too. there is the rain right now around mountain view and portola valley and it is coming down right now around 80. as you head to 680 and 085 in the tri-valley, it is heading your way. towards the north bay things are letting up, but here is the good news. we have seen about

three-quarters to an inch of rain in the last 24 hours for many of the hilltop areas in sonoma county. there's the good news. you see a lot of the radar, we're going into the rearview mode, most of the showers headed to the east. snow is falling in the sierra so chains for the day. there's the clearing line moving out of the south bay about 3:00, 4:00 in the afternoon. clearing skies. breezy and cool, highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. the clearing skies set the stage for tomorrow morning where we could wake up with patchy frost tomorrow morning, especially in the east bay and north bay valleys. we could have 30s tomorrow morning. we were in the upper 50s this morning, so that will be a big change. we will see a dry easter sunday and more opportunities for rain all over the seven-day forecast next week. >> it is a great change. >> a welcome change. >> it is rare in april i would think. >> i think by the end of the week we will have more rain in the month of april than we saw in january through march. that's the way we appear to be
