news political director and moderator of "meet the press." thanks for joining us this morning. good to see you. you always have fascinating guests, so i don't want to take anything away from any of them. but quite fascinating this morning, one of your guests, the austrian chancellor is the only eu leader to have met with putin since the invasion of ukraine. what were you able to find out about their discussion? >> well, it was interesting, he did a terrific job of bringing us into the room a little bit. it was interesting, i asked him, i said how close did you sit with him, i said i know he's very covid conscious. and he said if you don't take the pcr test in the kremlin, you have to sit at that long table. so there were no photos and he said there were no handshakes, nothing like that. he said that was his motivation, he went to ukraine first and was an eyewitness, and he said he took his take straight to putin. he said it looks like your soldiers are committing war
7:13 am
crimes. and you'll hear this, it's like on the one hand putin is acknowledging the reality that this is not going well for him. on the other hand, he still believes he's winning the war and isn't ready to concede a thing. then again, he spoke directly to the austrian chancellor in his native language, german, to say this war needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. so it did seem, to me, that the chancellor came away believing that putin does know the reality that's happening in ukraine, but is not interested in sort of changing his tactics any time soon. >> that is fascinating. i look forward to seeing that interview. speaking of covid protocols, we have more covid variants, ba.4, ba.5, a lot of mask mandates are falling to the wayside and people are gathering this holiday weekend. you have did white house covid coordinator on. is there a warning coming from them, like what we should expect coming up?
7:14 am
>> you know, there really isn't. one thing about the surge is, i think the biggest takeaway from dr. jha, if you're vaccinated and boosted once, not the second booster even, just vaccinated and boosted once, you're going to be fine. you may get it but you're not going to the hospital and you're certainly not going to -- this virus isn't going to kill you. so that is the good news about these subvariants, the vaccines work if you've been vaccinated, and as he emphasized, have gotten that first booster. what was less clear is what are the right metrics cities and states should use. is it case counts? he acknowledges that's a bit -- it depends, some states are doing a lot of testing and reporting it, some states are doing very little testing. hospitalizations appear to be still the best metric to do that, but not everybody seems to be complying that way. philadelphia being one of them. and then there's the mask

mandate on airplanes. it certainly sounds like it's not going to be renewed on may 3rd, but it is interesting, dr. jha as a citizen pundit, a doctor pundit, before he went into the administration, he was an advocate of a vaccine mandate for domestic travel. he wasn't saying they were preparing for that any time soon. >> in california they're pushing off that mandate. i doubt this is our last time talking about it. i'll see you at this same time next week. thanks for joining us. we hope you join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." he'll have exclusive interviews with the austrian chancellor and representative fred upton, plus an interview with the white house's covid coordinator. we hope you stick right here and tune into "meet the press" at 8:00 a.m. after this newscast. coming up about 30 minutes from now, we will talk to our nbc bay area political analyst larry gersten for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the food shortage caused by the russian invasion and how it's impacting nations across the globe.

to see some light rain showers approaching the bay area and really the main event for this next weather system will be about 11:00 to midnight tuesday morning to about 6:00 a.m. around the south bay. and you can see there's really not a whole lot there. this weather system will likely bring about a quarter inch or less, and it now looks like most of tuesday will be dry, other than those very early-morning showers, which should start to leave around sunrise on tuesday. but more significant rain is just around the corner. as we head into wednesday, better-looking system that will bring maybe about a half inch of rain or so toward the north bay. thursday looks to be the biggest in the series. this will have more rain and obviously more wind, too, as that rolls on through into friday morning. cooler air could also set the stage for some thunder showers. friday looks to be the best odds of that. as we head into the weekend, clearing skies as we head into next saturday and sunday. rain projections, could get

impressive, although i think a lot of what you're seeing, the red indicates the mountain areas could see 1 to 2 inches of rain, member a little higher toward mendocino county. why this is significant, if you look at the first three months of the year, how things were record dry, the numbers on the right is what we've seen so far this month, april. i think it stands pretty good odds by the end of the week april is going to outdo the first three months of the year. we had that record dry and now maybe twice to triple the amount of rain we typically see in april. that's just the way things are going. so seven-day forecast, easter sunday looks nice. a little bit of rain late tomorrow into tuesday, and then wednesday, thursday and friday, that should be the period to watch in terms of the heaviest rain. thursday looks to be the stormiest of the days as we head through the workweek. but we've got really good timing. clearing against for next weekend. today it's beautiful outside. we need the rain and we're going to see plenty of it as we head through monday through friday, the week ahead. >> a break today for all the

friday, april 22nd, is earth day. all next week nbc news and nbc bay area will focus on our climate in crisis, and ways you can help our planet. our earth week coverage begins tomorrow. ukraine has suffered greatly since the russian invasion. millions have fled, thousands have tied. countless cities have been levelled. now they're learning of a key international crisis emerging from the invasion, food scarcity. nbc bay area political analyst larry gersten joins us. can you explain what we're talking about here? >> sure, kira. good morning to you. we're somewhat protected from this mess in ukraine, modest increases in gas and things like that. but we're not really hurting in a dire way. this is a problem, the wheat shortage coming from what's going on in ukraine is critical really just about to the whole world. now, russia and ukraine together
7:49 am
produce about 30% of the world's wheat. the u.n. world food program has said that the 40 million or so in ukraine alone produce wheat for 400 million people, just right there in ukraine. that shortage has just been critical. and wheat prices, of course, because of it have gone up 70%. fertilizer prices, we need that desperately to have the wheat, have gone up 100%. you add it all up and according to the world food program, an additional 800 million people today around the world are going hungry. >> is this a problem strictly as a result of the war, or is there more to it? >> well, of course, the war has compounded every problem around ukraine and every place else. the war is a big part of it but not all of it. we have to go back to covid. we seem not to be able to get
7:50 am
away from covid. the crisis has strangled the world's supply chain on just about everything, including the issues, china, the biggest producer of all of wheat, has had a record bad year, terrible crops, the worst in decades. then you've got international sanctions that are thwarting russia's ability to transfer wheat around the world. plus we can add up the fact that the war has kept ukraine, of course, from going ahead and delivering wheat around the world because of what's going on at odessa and nearby ports on the black sea. you put it altogether and the u.n. food program says this is the worst food shortage around the world since world war ii. next year, by the way, it looks even worse, because of the fertilizer mess. we've got a real shortage there as well. >> wow. so it seems like an oversimplified question, but what can be done?
7:51 am
>> you know, short of ending the invasion, not much. argentina and brazil, they're wheat producers. they're going to try to add a little bit into it. india, australia are also wheat producers. they're going to try to cut into some of the shortfall. they won't get close to making up the difference. the bottom line, kira, the war affects us all, not just ukraine, not just europe, unely, case in many situations, it's the poor who will suffer the most. >> indeed. that is an upsetting look, larry. thank you for shining a light on that this morning. it is 7:51 right now. up next we have a quick look at the top stories we're following, including a brazen robbery in an upscale bay area neighborhood. thieves caught on surveillance video speeding away. police now need your help finding that car.
7:54 am
welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we're following on this sunday morning. at least 11 people were shot and two teenage boys killed in a mass shooting in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. it happened just after midnight at a large party at an airbnb that was being rented. police say there were about 200 people there, many of them underage. when police responded shots were still being fired from outside the home. authorities say there are at least eight different crime scenes associated with their

investigation. back here locally, we have an update to a story we jifrt brought you yesterday morning, a man and a child robbed at gunpoint in palo alto. nbc bay area has this new video from neighbors who say they saw it happen friday evening. you can see a black car speeding across the screen there. that car pulled up to a man who was getting his child out of the back seat in their driveway. someone jumped out of the car in a ski mask, pointed a pistol at the man and took his watch. the car then sped off. >> it seemed pretty targeted. they seemed to know what they were doing. they jumped out and jumped back in. >> palo alto police are looking for the thief and the driver. they believe an incident at the patagonia store just after the robbery likely involved the same black car and the same thieves. they are also investigating whether another report at stanford shopping center that day is connected as well. happening tomorrow, 8,000 sutter health nurses and health care workers plan to strike.
7:56 am
more than a dozen northern california facilities will be impacted. nurses are striking for better health and safety standards. they have been negotiating with sutter health for ten months now. sutter releasing a statement that reads, we are hopeful our continued willingness to bargain in good faith will encourage the union to call off this costly and disruptive strike and instead work toward an agreement that recognizes our nurses for their important work while maintaining the strength and stability of our hospitals for all who depend on us. last night all eyes were on the warriors who made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. the dubs hosting the denver nuggets. fans going wild for the return of steph curry. he entered play with about five minutes left in the first quarter. he played limited minutes, after his 12-game layoff because of that foot injury in boston. but the real star of the game, jordan poole. watch him hit that three.
7:57 am
bang, poole scored 30 points in his playoff debut. that's the most out of any warrior since wilt chamberlain in the '60s. warriors win game one 123-107. they host the nuggets for game two tomorrow night. rumor has it we're getting a break in the rain, but it's returning tomorrow night. >> good timing at least for easter sunday plans. we've got sunshine outside right now and kind of the chilly start with a bit of patchy frost in inland valleys. by lunchtime low 60s showing up around san jose and the tri-valley. highs today ranging from near 70 in morgan hill, upper 50s to low 60s san francisco over to oakland and upper 60s toward the tri-valley. you talked about the chance of rain returning. it starts tomorrow evening around the north bay. you see the rain toward 11:00, moving into the bay area, and more opportunities for rain, heaviest rain will be probably thursday into friday morning as we go through the week. >> it's just perfect. a break for today, and rain tomorrow night when we'll all be
