"early today" starts right now good morning i'm cori coffin. >> and i'm steven romo as the sunset on easter weekend here in the united states, russia's war on ukraine entered day 54 pope francis dedicated much of his easter address, pleading for peace in ukraine speak ogg a crowd of roughly 50,000 people, the pontiff accused russia of dragging ukraine into a cool and senseless project. meanwhile, on the front line, the battle over mariupol is growing even more intense. ukraine is refusing to give up the besieged city defying an ultimatum from russians. let's get a live update now from raf sanchez who is in lviv following developments there the deadline to surrender mariupol passed yesterday. what do we know ukrainian forces and the situation on the ground?

>> steven, we know that they have basically fought to the last bullet. this is a motley crew of ukrainian marines and fighters from the azov regiment, that far right militia who have been leading the defense of mariupol. they are holed up in the remains of one of europe's largest steel factories. they are desperately short of supplies, desperately short of ammunition as you said, the russians demanded that they surrender at 6:00 a.m. local time yesterday, but that deadline came and went without the white flag being raised over that steel plant it is not clear, though, how much longer they can hold on steven, you may be able to hear the air raid sirens are just going off here in lviv right now. we'll just keep talking about mariupol for one second. the mayor of the -- an adviser to the mayor of the city says russian forces are sealing that city off they're asserting their control over a town that they have already virtually destroyed. the mayor says 10,000 civilians have been killed so far.

but the real toll may be twice that steven? >> and raf, it's not just mariupol that's being attacked, as we can hear from the air raid sirens behind you. what can you tell us where you are? >> so you can hear the announcements going on right now here in lviv earlier this morning, there was a series of missile strikerailwe in just the last few minutes, the governor oflviv confirming six people were killed, eight injured in that attack he says a child is among the casualties it's not clear if that child was killed or wounded. but the air raid sirens are ringing out once again over this western city we can see people in the square down here are running to safety. now it is very unusual for vladimir putin to strike this far west we've been talking for days now about how the war is shifting east but in just the last 48 hours,

aerial attacks it's pretty big, about 500 sa sailors. the ship was roughly 65 miles. this is a satellite photo from last week off the coast of odesa. so right about here. and what happened is that what we know from information, two ukrainian neptune missile struck appears to be from the south of ukraine. while russian officials claim it was an unrelated fire that ignited ammunition on board. remember, ukraine does not have a significant missile program. in fact, ukraine was in the middle of modifying their missile program. this was that missile. it's called the neptune. the "wall street journal" pointing out that final tests were not even done with the start of this war. in its final form, its capability about 190 miles, about 330 pounds total so that could mean it could absolutely hit the moskva, which was right about here that control of south ukraine very key look at the air defense when you see what moskva had.

on stage, side by side with her students officer griffin, what inspired you to want to join the musical? >> it was a uopportunity to really spend quality time with these amazing kids on this campus >> and how has that experience been >> it was so great to get those positive connections. >> reporter: connections that now go beyond patrolling campus. kenzie and jacob nelson rehearsed with officer griffin for months cassie, what was your reaction when you found out officer griffin would be in the musical? >> i was definitely shocked, but i was very excited >> jacob, talk to me a little bit about how being in the musical with her kind of gave you another vantage point from which to see her. >> i wasn't really responsive to law enforcement. i never really responded well to that type of authority and having an officer be in something that i love so much where she's with us, doing the rehearsals, it just put a new
