the only one who is mad is bob. sorry, bob. we have stranger up and scanning. very busy. where you see the green is where we're seeing the rain. you can see it's widespread through fairfield, concord, san rafael, parts of san francisco. if i zoom this in closer, you can see the heavier pockets past oakland. we are expecting to continue to see those showers until about 8:00 a.m. there will be periods where it will rain, pauses and then continues to rain. pockets moving through burlingame. we have a couple areas of rain coming down now in parts of the south bay including san jose. it's not widespread. not a lot of rain through milpitas. plenty of rain through that. that will continue to push through for the next couple of hours. here's a closer look at what we're expecting when it comes to temperatures. we'll remain in the 50s. winds are at about 18 miles per

hour in san francisco. and then if you look at the icons, we keep this on and off again rain through the afternoon. the heavier pockets will move into the middle of your commute. san jose is about 54 degrees. not as windy in san jose. a bit lighter through there at 10 miles per hour. but we're not in the clear. we're talking about a chance for thunderstorms. first i do want to get a look at how the roads are doing with mike. >> definitely wet conditions. soupy out there from emeryville, it's blurry as we look through the water and the mist in the air. westbound does move smoothly, there is a disabled vehicle or a minor crash there as you're approaching the treasure island exit. there is a bit of slowing there. and the green highlighting, that's not grass. that's actually wet roadways. that is how it shows up on our road weather index. enough rain to make things slick out here. we hear about hydroplaning, west 24 past the lafayette exit. there may be one lane blocked and a bit of slowing coming

through the area as a patch of rain comes down through contra costa. green all over the place. near the dublin interchange, wet roads registering on the weather index. bob is out there. how are things going with the weather? >> i know vianey and kris were talking about me being stuck outside, it's pretty nice outside, a little cold but not raining. the headlights behind me, westbound 580 at the dublin interchange. this video is the worst we saw, a light drizzle. something to keep in mind, roads are wet. could be more rain as you head into work. watch your speeds and distance between you and the car in front of you. thunderstorms are possible tonight. there could be spotty rain tomorrow morning. but overall national weather service predicting anywhere between a quarter inch to an

inch of total rainfall throughout the storms that we're seeing for the next 24 hours or so. the national weather service issued a weather storm warning for the northern sierra nevada until tomorrow morning. this is video from i-80 in kingville. no chain controls yet, but that is expected to change. that area could see two feet of snow. the snow is good news for palisades tahoe which is extending its ski season to may 15th. if you're heading into work right now, depending on where you are working, we're not seeing the heavy rains that we've seen in the past, but the roads are slick as mike mentioned. you can see the reflection from the headlights behind me. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> don't forget, you can track the storm as it heads in your direction. you can get the nbcbay area app. it's a great tool for watching

that rain roll in. you can see exactly when it will arrive. download it in order to keep track of the forecast and it is more accurate than your iphone weather app. in a few hours we expect a major announcement in the east bay. this is a break through in a decades old cold case. the attorney general and the contra costa d.a. are holding a news conference with the details. we'll have the crew there and bring you updates in the evening newscast. this morning, russian president vladimir putin is declaring operations in mariupol a success. putin met with russia's defense minister today who informed him that fighters are still trapped in a steel plant in the besieged city. he is ordering plans to storm that industrial region to be canceled but continue to be blocked. this is all playing out as the west scrambles to arm ukrainian forces with weapons and to

sanctions including major banks, individuals and the first set of penalties against cryptocurrency mining firms. >> so this is part of our stepped up effort to crackdown on those attempting to evade our unprecedented sanctions. >> reporter: russia now saying it test launched its new nuclear capable intercontinental ballistic missile. putin boasting it makes those who threaten russia think twice. the pentagon says russia notified them in advance and that the test was routine. meanwhile, ukrainians under attack are standing citizens d in russia, it's understandable. >> reporter: even with more weapons heading to ukraine, president zelenskyy says help is not coming fast enough. president biden will deliver remarks later today about russia's invasion of ukraine. that is expected to happen at

i said yet. >> i just talked to him on the what's happening behind him. it will move in in a bit. i told him to hang tight and stay put and keep that umbrella handy. no matter where you are, it will start and stop, and it will continue that way with it getting lighter into the afternoon. another thing to look out for, there's a beach hazard statement in effect for the coastline. dangerous sneaker waves and rip currents. if you're heading to the coastline, please make sure to keep a safe distance from the coastline. admire the waves from a safe place. another thing, as we were talking about the snow, there is a winter storm warning that will be in place until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. talking about 1 to 4 feet of snow possible and also winds, 50 plus miles per hour. in addition to that, there's an avalanche watch in the area. not a good day to travel to lake tahoe. speaking of travel, let's check

we have had a couple of spinouts in the east bay. i'll track them. good morning, everyone. happy rainy thursday to you. breeze airways is coming to sfo in november. this is a new low-cost airline from the same fella who created jetblue. if you have been flying in the intermountain west, morris air did that as well. they'll fly from san francisco to westchester county, new york. the race car driver lewis hamilton and the tennis great, serena williams are teaming up to buy the chelsea football club. you may remember chelsea was owned by a russian billionaire. hamilton and williams will keep contribute $10 million to the bid. $20 million, not enough to buy a soccer team. they have other lead investors including the chairman of british airways. hamilton may soon own part of chelsea but purportedly he's an arsenal fan. tesla opened its books to

the pilot told a local radio station the balloon struggled to get into the air properly because the valve that releases the hot air from the top didn't seal properly. it hit several rooftops but missed powerlines before it hit the ground. 12 people in that hot air balloon basket were not hurt. >> 12 people? >> 12 people. >> quite a few. >> those baskets are big. i'm glad it didn't hit powerlines. >> none of us have ever gone on a hot air balloon? >> i did a story about someone going up in one. i didn't get to go. i wanted to go, they were like, no. >> i feel like you're too tall. >> got it. all right. so not a good day to fly anything today. it's rainy. there's a chance of

thunderstorms. thunderstorms do not mix with anything in the air. if you hear thunder roar, head indoors. satellite radar shows the storm system that is pushing through right now, but also if i zoom this in, you'll notice the striping near the chico area. this is snow coming down steady, which is why there's a winter storm warning in effect for lake tahoe through 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. stranger, mobile doppler radar is scanning. you can see rain pushing through, so the lighter colors, sort of light rain and where you see the heavier pockets is that yellow/orange hue. it's about to move into san ramon and concord starting to get some of that rain. here's some areas that are not seeing a ton of it right now. livermore, san jose, this back here will continue to push through. a lot of the focus in this system will be southward of the golden gate bridge by this

afternoon. it will then completely clear out. temperatures not very cold out there. it will feel a little muggy because it's in the 50s. the temperatures are mild. the forecasted highs for this afternoon, we're still going to be dealing with a chance of thunderstorms into the evening. but look at the daytime highs. 63 for san jose. 61 in martinez. not too bad out there. not too cold. just cooler than before. the biggest change heading into this evening are the winds. expecting for the winds to pick up around 2:00. shortly after your lunch hour, you will notice winds 20, 25 plus. oakland, 22. look at this. and that's because the remainder of that system is finishing its exit and notice what happens to the wind. itrrow morning. the timing of this, i took this through 8:30. notice the rain now becomes spotty. so it goes from sort of these line of showers to spotty rain through about 12 clock. you will continue to see on and

off again showers. by 5:00, as i had mentioned, a lot of that rain would be focused south of the golden gate bridge. a lot of those heavier pockets will be more over the santa cruz area, gilroy, morgan hill. it pushes out into the evening. get a break, the remainder of this system continues on its trek by 5:30 in the morning, which means you may have a bit more of a wet commute yet again. clearing out by friday evening. as far as rainfall totals go, anywhere from a tenth, couple hundredths to a quarter inch, maybe a half inch in the higher elevation areas. let's get over to mike. >> the view impeded by the rain as will the roadw view. the red lights stacking upasure. we have a crash clearing. a little recovery for those speeds mid-span, but also slowing as you approach the incline. the volume is building heading

fire, apple tv and online. we want to get you out the door, once you step out there, you will notice it's a wet start to the day. a live look at san francisco. april showers have finally seemed to have arrived and much welcomed given our drought, but how long will this stick around for us? >> vianey arana is tracking the wet weather. it's widespread looking at your radar. better late than never. you know, it's definitely been nice to see the rain. this is a look at downtown san jose. let's look at radar. from far away, if you notice the system, it looks good. i'll zoom this in closer so you can see which areas are getting rain. that blue, pink and white is snow. we're expecting to see 1 to 4 inches in the lake tahoe area through friday, which means a dangerous commute. and don't forget, that into the evening, even though the rain will sort of diminish, we are talking about the possibility of thunderstorms and maybe even

small hail as the colder system sort of sweeps through towards the evening. temperatures will be in the 50s today. kind of mild overall. notice the humidity, 90% humidity. if it's been feeling muggy, that's why. it's frizzy hair out there. on and off winds from the southwest will increase around lunch hour. then they sort of diminish into the overnight and early morning hours on friday. isolated lightning could be a possibility. we'll keep a close eye on that. the impacts to your commute a big deal if you're heading out mike. >> your radar shows a lot of activity in contra costa county, but right now we're looking at alameda county. look at the water kicking up behind these cars which are moving smoothly at the toll plaza, they'll slow down on the incline where there's a crash. the crew will take another 15 to

20 minutes to get to the scene on west 80 on the span past treasure island. watch for additional slowing as the volume will build. green sensors yes for the green, but green means wet roadways, blue means puddling and ponding, that's san francisco, treasure island, in the east bay, scanning through highway 24 and the walnut creek interchange. everything else is moving smoothly. be careful, it is slick out there. follow vianey and mike on social media. you can share your weather photos with vianey and maybe you'll see them on the air. an investigation is under way involving a san leandro middle school teacher caught on tape lashing out and saying inappropriate things to students. he had been removed from the classroom, but his words are creating an uproar with parents.

the controversy happened at bancroft middle school. what he told his students has been posted on social media. here's part of what he said to them. >> i've been through three tours of combat in the most dangerous places on earth and i'm not in the position to let some kid talk back to me. period. that's how it is. i shot kids younger than him. >> the superintendent put out a statement saying in part "the district is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and in doing so, the personnel involved has been removed from the classroom. we've been talking about this all week. tomorrow is earth day. one san jose state professor and a nasa scientist are making sure some of the youngest understand the science behind our climate and crisis. eugene cordero created a video and gaming series called green ninja. it's an easy way to engage sixth

system that is taking aim at the bay area. this is a live look this morning over san jose and you can see that it's a little hazy there. that's because the rain is coming down. if you're dry right now, well, don't blink. things might change pretty quickly. vianey arana is tracking all of that and where it's headed today. it will be one of those days where it stops raining, it starts up, we get a long break. if you live south of the golden gate bridge, you will see the majority of this. wondering about the weekend? this system passing through right now using our mobile doppler radar stormranger, it is bringing light to moderate rain at times through san francisco. if i push this out further, you can see now pushing through season ramon, the concord area as well. pushing this down through fremont, you can see a couple pockets of rain. we have more rain moving into san jose right now. we expect for this to continue into early tomorrow morning.

it will clear out in time for saturday and sunday. if you have plans to head to the beach, to enjoy the coastline, keep in mind that there is a beach hazard statement in effect for the entire coastline because of dangerous sneaker waves and swells. admire from a distance. another look, too, at the sierra snow. let's talk about that. a lot of people like to head to lake tahoe of the weekend. today and tomorrow, not the best days for travel, especially road travel because there will be a winter storm warning in effect until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. talking about 1 to 4 feet of snow. the winds are also going to be extremely gusty. 50 plus miles per hour, maybe even stronger in the higher elevations. there's an avalanche watch in that area. you have to be mindful of that. any time that you hit the road out there, you have to make sure to check for chain controls. i've been talking to mike inouye, it appears they do have chain controls in effect. is that right? >> that's right.

i-80 over the sierra, bring those chains. probably not the best time to drive. not great in san jose. the wet roadways, this is 280. the volume is building underneath the 880 to the 17, transition heading south for the taillights. smooth flow of traffic throughout the south bay, but we have this wet roadway highlighted in green. the blue, more puddling in contra costa county. looking ahead, we already knew about this traffic which is building here for north of 680, downtown san jose, the sharks play tonight, around the s.a.p. center, watch out for that. smooth drive right now even though the volume is building. a lot of water hit this area. highway 24 especially. over towards the walnut creek interchange, same thing for highway 18. we've had a number of spinouts, a couple on highway 24, they

the latest weekly jobless numbers are out. the labor department says 184,000 people filed first-time claims. about 1,000 fewer than previous weeks. it's just above expectation as the labor market continues to be tight. another 1.4 million filed continuing claims. that's down about 58,000 compared with last week. happening today, not one but two high-profile political people will be visiting the bay area. vice president kamala harris will be in san francisco. among her stops, ucsf, where she will continue her efforts to address maternal health. she'll visit with expectant families and talk about maternal health crisis. the last time she visited the bay area was last september, this is when she campaigned for governor newsom. at the same time, former president barack obama will be at stanford to deliver a speech about the way we create and

consume information and how it may threaten democracy. that event is co-hosted by the cyberpolicy center, stanford and the obama foundation. we'll have full coverage of both visits on air and online throughout the day. the president, president biden, says that he is ready to brief the american people on the latest in ukraine. >> this comes as many americans say they want the president to take an even tougher stance against russia. >> it's such a hard balance. keep in mind what we're doing now is so much more than we were doing a few weeks ago. these days we're shipping long-range anti-aircraft missiles, armored vehicles and howitzers. the president is set to speak at 6:45 a.m. we will monitor that for you. the president was just briefed by top military officials yesterday. a new associated press poll shows many americans want the president to get tougher on russia. 54% say he's not being tough

his wife suffered minor injuries. a new development in new mexico where authorities released a scathing new report on the deadly "rust" movie set shooting. the state's occupational health and safety bureau concluded that producers demonstrated indifference to employee safety. actor alec baldwin was holding a gun during a rehearsal when it fired a live round killing helena hutchins and injuring one other person. the citation for the production company is more than $130,000. the cabinet secretary for new mexico's environment department says management knew that firearm safety procedures were not being followed. >> they did not put the necessary resources behind implementing those standards. as a result we had the tragic fatality and injuries that occurred on set. >> you can watch the full interview on the "today" show coming up at 7:00 this morning right after "today in the bay." it is 5:48.

>> it is. mike came in and gave me some coffee he had >> look how nice he is. >> shout out to mike for the coffee. >> it was from yesterday. >> awe. >> let's look at satellite radar, if not, you'll see me over here falling asleep. i can't do that. the satellite radar right now. let's talk about what's going on in the atmosphere. we have one initial system, the cold front that swept in, bringing you some of that rain. right here out in the pacific, what you see right here is the jet stream. the interaction of these two later this evening will bring the possibility of thunderstorm activity. we're not in the clear just yet. we'll continue to see the on and off again showers through the evening and friday morning. but also plenty of sierra snow. that's the blue you see here on radar. also we have a couple lightning strikes up in the chico area, that's showing up on radar. what's showing up on stranger. we're the only one in the bay area who has it. it gives us an exact location.

right now, santa rosa, san rafael, pushing in through concord. still kind of coming down in oakland at times. your travel through the east bay and the tri valley will be a wet one for the next couple of hours. down in the south bay, getting more rain coming into san jose. just a couple minutes ago we had a bit of a break. now we're seeing that come down in the downtown area as well. speaking of downtown, the current temperature is 54 degrees. i mentioned this earlier, it's not windy in downtown. however, look at that humidity factor right there. if it's been feeling muggy, you're not wrong. it's about 90%. overall over the next couple of hours those temperatures will remain in the 50s. we won't cool off significantly. again, because of that approaching jet stream and the instability, there's also a possibility that we might get to see some isolated thunderstorms

and hail in the area. as far as wind speeds go, right around lunch hour, the winds pick up, 15, 20, 25 plus. napa, 27 miles per hour. wondering about the time stamp, that's at about 2:30. heading into late 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, look what happens to the wind. we continue to see some shower activity, but the wind begins to die down. into the 5:30, 6:00 hour, the majority of that rain will be focused in areas south of the golden gate bridge. so that's going to include the santa cruz mountain area, the san jose area, and then notice early friday morning, we do continue with the bit of a scattered shower chance through hayward, oakland, parts of san francisco and it continues to be scattered in through about 11:00 a.m. for your friday morning commute. as far as how much rain we're getting, anywhere from about a tenth of an inch to a quarter inch. some spots potentially heading into the early morning hours. so it will be interesting to see how much we manage to

accumulate. a welcomed site indeed. if you're wondering about saturday or sunday, good news, the rain clears out in time for the temperatures to warm up for your sunday fun day. let's check the roads. >> that's right. looking over here for a slower drive. you want to heed this warning. slow down, lower the speeds, you have okay conditions as far as the drive goes. no major crashes. we do have wet roads. look at this. the blue really showing where that rain was concentrated over here in contra costa county for quite some time. your drive from concord into walnut creek will be tough. a couple spinouts on 24, both out of the roadway. another spinout coming through piedmont. be careful through oakland. peninsula not clear. wet roads, damp roads, highlighted in green. so far the pattern is holding up to your standard pattern for slowing in san jose. >> thanks. 5:53 for you. happening now, if you live in west marin or novato, you likely

after falling down the stairs in the home. they say lucio confessed after hours of interrogation. amanda knox is defending lucio. in a tweet she wrote "after five hours of psychological abuse, melissa lucio said whatever they wanted her to say to get out of that room. i guess i did it." lucio also got support from kim kardashian who is known to advocate for wrongfully convicted people. lucio's attorneys are hoping texas governor greg abbott will grant a delay to review new evidence. her execution is set for wednesday. this morning, asap rocky is out on bond after being arrested at l.a.x. in connection to a november shooting. the rapper was arriving on a private plane from barbados yesterday where he had been
