and the east bay school district that will no longer require students to mask up in the classroom starting this morning. this is "today in the bay." here we go, hello monday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington, we're broadcasting on your television, but you can also find us at roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. police in pittsburg investigating a late night shooting on kirker pass road. there are bullet holes in the side of the pickup truck and someone was injured. police are not providing any updates. mike inouye is looking at possible traffic impacts. >> that's right, laura. this is a critical area. you know the road we talk about with the connector from highway 4 down to 680, that cuts off a lot of the backup over into walnut creek. right now it's cut off. railroad coming off of highway 4

trance iging to kirker pass road at buchanan. you can loop back to castle wood and cedar. it's very light traffic but things build coming out of antioch, an early commute we'll see more traffic building on the surface streets. there's a smaller crash on the shoulder. other than that, the morning commute is clear on the roads. how are the skies? >> it's looking clear here, too, as we look at our temperatures right now in the upper 40s and low 50s. as you get ready to head out on this monday morning and look at the highs, it will warming quite a bit and sunshine and highs reaching into the upper 70s for the south bay as well as the inland east bay, reaching 77 in santa rosa, and 75 in santa cruz. so we are going to see some nice weather for the start of the week. a little bit cooler tomorrow. we'll talk about that, coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. bay area nurses planning to strike today. nurses and management at stanford and lucille packard

children's hospitals are at odds. that means about 5,000 nurses are planning to walk off the job and onto picket lines later this morning in palo alto. at issue, staffing levels, pay, benefits and quality of life concerns like vacation time and help with student loans. stanford says it is offering a generous and comprehensive contract that keeps the nurses among the highest paid in the nation but nurses say that is not enough and it's time longstanding staff issues are finally addressed. >> we have been having staffing issues since before the pandemic. the pandemic was just a point in time which exacerbated the issue. what crona is working toward a fair contract showing our nurses are valued and also shows we care about our patients. >> stanford hospital leaders released a statement that says in part "we respect our nurses' legal right to take part in a work stoppage but are deeply

disappointed that the union chose this path. a union work stoppage is a serious event that is disruptive to our patients, families and colleagues." the highest profile american trip since the war in ukraine started. secretary of state antony blinken and defense secretary lloyd austin met with ukrainian president zelenskyy. u.s. diplomats will return to ukraine this week possibly as early as today. they announced more than $700 million in military aid for ukraine and 15 allied partner countries. more than 300 million of that is earmarked specifically for kyiv. we're also learning the u.s. is closing its southern border to ukrainians seeking refuge. asylum seekers need to take part in a new program meant to expedite the refugee process through europe. since the war began and millions in the world and the bay area continue to find ways to support ukraine, even the art world is playing its part all the way from oakland. you may have seen this powerful photo circulating on social media. well, a local auction gallery teamed up with the artist to sell five original prints and send the proceeds to an organization supporting the ukrainian military. >> it's exciting for me in the arts to see there's a way for us to benefit the ukraine and help out while in the art world, which is different from what's going on. >> reporter: the first print was auctioned sunday and it sold for more than $8,000, eight times the estimated price. the girl with the cannon is the artist's 9-year-old daughter who he described as frightened like every other girl who had to leave behind their home and leave behind a father to fight for their country. stephanie marganon for "today in the bay." the omicron variant and its subvariants now ask the for almost all covid cases here in the u.s. nationally, the average daily cases are up more than 70% since the end of march. however, they remain far below the omicron and delta peaks. here in california, average daily caseis have gone up by more than 50% since the end of march and as you can see from this chart, hospitalizations in the state are still down. omicron and its subvariants are milder in terms of symptoms, but much more transmissible, and the news of mass infections at san mateo farm as well as the marin county students on their trip to d.c., you can wonder, is it just a matter of time before we all get infected? we asked ucsf dr. peter chin hong. >> i think we're moved by the stories of lots of people getting it. for example i haven't gotten infected and don't want to get

infected if i can help it. doesn't mean i don't engage with life enthusiastically. i'm not walling myself at home, but when i go out, i try to reduce my risk. >> dr. chin-hong says mild symptoms can even cause you to miss work or five to ten days. and some vaccinated and boosted people are still getting it. covid accounts for more than 13% of all people who died last year. despite the rising number of cases, oakland public schools are moving forward without masks. starting today, the mandate is changing to a strong recommendation, but if a student or staff member tests positive, the district will require masks to be worn inside again. oakland unified was the largest district to keep its mask policy even after the state changed its rules. 4:38 for you this morning. are you feeling relief at the pump? next on "today in the bay,"

60s by 11:00, and overall, kind of a warm day, but we do have a cooldown in sight. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and a live look at fremont, shows you the nimitz freeway moves smoothly. we have a good amount of traffic there. there is a closure that carries over from the weekend. we'll talk about that and over in the area kari was talking about, i found good news for folks in that portion of contra costa county. let's check in with cnbc. >> wall street is set to open lower once again. investors continue to worry about inflation, rising rates and a slowing economy. stocks sold off on friday. the dow falling nearly 1,000 points for its worst day since october of 2020. the s&p 500 and nasdaq both dropping more than 2%, their worst day in more than two months, losses extending to asia and europe this morning. in focus this week reports on durable goods, housing, personal income and spending, jobless claims and first quarter read on the overall economy, the gdp and the busiest week for earnings

season with about a third of the s&p 500 and more than 40% for the dow, companies reporting their numbers. gas prices are inching a bit lower. the average price of regular unleaded dropping three cents over the past two weeks to $4.24 a gallon, still much higher than over $1 in this time last year. analysts say unless oil prices continue to drop, additional drops at the pump are likely to be small or even none. it was a good weekend for family fare at the movies. universal and dreamworks "the bad guys" topping the box office with $24 million according to comscore. it's good news for hollywood as it heads into the lucrative summer watching season. universal's "minions: the rise of gru" and pixar's "lightyear" are hoping to reach pre-pandemic levels. i'm brian sullivan. parents on the peninsula are

4:46. you know how it is, coming back from vacation. kind of energized. tomorrow, forget it. nice weather today? >> yes, and it's going to be like it was yesterday, all of that sunshine, warm temperatures, and we do have a few changes, but unfortunately not a lot of rain in sight, so as we take another look in san jose, i wanted to show you your temperature trend for today. we're going to see a lot of sunshine going into this afternoon, after starting out with a few clouds. our temperatures head for the mid-70s by 2:00, and reaching 77 degrees for a high. we'll also be up to 77 in livermore and reaching 81 today in fairfield. we'll see mostly mid to upper 70s in much of the north bay. then tomorrow we start to see those temperatures coming down a couple of degrees. take a look the at the seven-day forecast, coming up at the bottom of the screen, we'll see some mid-60s tomorrow in fremont and 68 in oakland. it's also going to be windy and starting out with some clouds, but then seeing those

temperatures coming down even more for wednesday, as a dry cold front sweeps through. take a look at where it is now. we'll see the increase in cloud cover as we go into the next couple of days, and unfortunately, not a lot of rain with this, at least not for the bay area, and it does stay just to the north of us and that's going to be the trend going into the end of the week, as well as next week as well as this high pressure builds. at least with the light snow that we got or it was a pretty good amount of snow that we got last week, it brought our numbers up a couple of percent, so as we look at how that compares to normal, we're at 41% of the normal amount of the sierra snowpack. that's going down this week because we are looking at all these dry conditions. highs reaching into the upper 70s today, then upper 60s for much of the rest of the week, and then warming up again for saturday and sunday, notice all of the sunshine and it's going to be windy, so san francisco will see those winds possibly

reaching 30 miles per hour, with highs in the lower 60s. mike, you're tracking a closure near fremont. >> we're tracking two closures, the freeways themselves looking pretty good except for this one section over here as kari mentioned, it's highway 84, continues with the closure from the weekend. it should be reopening in the next few minutes there. nothing is posted as far as any delays or complications. the twitter account for cal trans was showing great progress as they are repairing and enhancing the roadway through niles canyon. the closure kirker pass road cleared. that is great. the police investigation continues from an overnight shooting. we're continuing to follow the story but kirker pass off of railroad, the critical connector from pittsburg to walnut creek is open again and that's great news for the morning commute. it's one of the three routes we track heading outof pittsburg into walnut creek. right now they're all about the same. back to you. >> thanks, mike. now to a follow-up on the teens returning from prom who

were held up at gunpoint, this is in a peninsula neighborhood. >> there was a second armed robbery not far away, less than a half hour later and police and witnesses say could be connected to the same person. this morning the victim speaking is out so others are aware and on the look out. "today in the bay's" thom jensen has the story you'll only see on nbc bay area. >> reporter: the victim told us this happened about 1:00 in the morning saturday as he returned home to his foster city complex. he saw an suv idling with its headlights on just about 30 yards from his garage. >> i pulled in, going into my house, he backed up here. >> reporter: he doesn't want to share his name but wants to tell the story how he was robbed at gunpoint, some neighbors and others in foster city are aware this type of crime can happen here. >> i hurry up and parked my car and closed the garage just to be safe. as i was closing the garage, a

woman came under the garage door with a black ski mask on, holding a gun with an extended magazine on it. >> reporter: she quietly demanded to open the car door and then she said "open the door or i'm going to shoot." he said he didn't have anything. >> i tried to close the garage door on her to try to scare her to running away. it was going through my mind at this time, she wants more than money. >> reporter: he didn't want the woman to hurt his family inside the home. >> she started to smack the gun as hard as she could against the window to try to break the window and she was unsuccessful. >> reporter: then she fired a shot, the bullet went through the driver's side window and exited through the front passenger door. >> the bullet went probably a foot in front of my face and exited out, the bullet went through the passenger door on my right and now there was a giant hole in the window and at that point she said "give me your wallet." >> reporter: she got away with some cash and his credit cards which he promptly canceled, and

sped off in the suv. police tell nbc bay area a suspect matching the same description, a woman wearing a black ski mask and camo clothing robbed a group of high school students about a half hour earlier in redwood city, just after the teens attended woodside high school's prom. the suspect pointed a gun at the teens and demanded a wallet. one of the parents told me he was relieved no one was hurt. a similar result here, but an awfully scary moment for this young man when that gun went off so close to him and his family. >> i'm also thankful that it ended the way it did, because my guess is that she was just waiting for the first person to be going home. >> reporter: thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> quite frightening for those kids. 4:52. using the city as his canvas. how exercise and technology are coming together to make one san francisco artist's messages come to live.

happening now, antioch city council is debating on delaying new restrictions on flavored cigarettes, ecigarettes and little cigars. last month the council voted to ban selling flavored tobacco because of the health effects on youth. city council they can also vote on educating the community about the ordinance rather than immediate enforcement. a vote is set for tomorrow. we'll be right back.

reopening of the chinese historical society of america on clay street. that exhibit features artifacts from the san francisco lee's career teaching and personal items like his workout bench. >> unwf the main focus of our exhibit is to get business back into san francisco chinatown and hopefully slow down anti-asian hate. we'll do this through bruce lee. bruce lee was the personality that brought people together. >> bruce lee was born at the chinese hospital in chinatown back in 1940. the museum and bruce lee foundation partnered to make this prong happen. a unique group is using legs, a bike, gps, imagination to make incredible art. jakub uses tracking software to create images. the 46-year-old bikes across all

parts of the city to make art. others do the same thing by running. kuba plots out maps and uses a fitness tracking app and hops on his bike. the images show up on the map which is displayed on social media, part of a growing hobby known as gps art or running art. pretty amazing there. kuba says making a piece can take him anywhere from one to ten hours. >> all drawings are in a single ride. it starts early in the morning and completes the entire ride by the end of the day. so anything from, could be as short as 10, 15 miles to as long as 106 miles which i did a couple weeks ago. >> he's recently started using some of the art to raise funds for causes important to him. >> pretty cool, but never have
