the developments this morning. hi erin. good morning to you. >> good morning. we just got back from interest trenches of kyiv where we saw first hand the importance of western weapons in its sight. they say it could be the difference between victory and defeat. in germa in germany more than 40 nations brought together by the u.s. tuesday showing support for ukraine. >> i applaud all the countries that have risen and are rising to meet this demand. but we don't have any time to waste. >> reporter: in a significant academic escalation, russia halts gas delivers to poland and bulgaria, siting a new rule they must pay in russian rubles this as the war shows no sign of slowing down russian troops striking transportation targets in ukraine. including a key bridge outside odesa. and russians claiming complete control over the region. >> we of course totally against this because it is territory of ukraine which temporarily occupied. >> reporter: across from the

u.n. secretary general, russian president vladimir putin said he hopes for a positive result in negotiations with ukraine. the comment comes after his foreign minister warned the threat of nuclear war is real. >> loose talk of nuclear weapons, nuclear escalation is especially irresponsible it is the height of irresponsibility >> reporter: the united states now pushing forward with plans to restore its embassy in kyiv announcing the first american diplomats are arrived back in ukraine. western support on full display outside the capitol wednesday morning as they showed off anti-tank weapons provided by the british. this soldier tells us we need many modern weapons. -tanks

it is very important to us meanwhile erin some disturbing reports, some concerned there may be attacks outside ukraine. worries the war could be expanding. what more do you know? >> reporter: that's right, savannah there are multiple reports of explosions inside a russian-backed break-away region inside neighboring moldova u.s. officials are saying it is too soon to say what happened. both sides are blaming each other. investigation is ongoing but there are real concerns in ukraine that this conflict could be spreading outside of this country with the potential to destabilize further part of eastern europe savannah. >> erin, thank you very much let's move to new developments in the covid battle pfizer now requesting approval for its vaccine booster shot for younger kids in the meantime vice president kamala harris isolating this

morning after she contracted the virus. peter alexander with the latest from washington. >> the vice president's office say she's going to follow cdc guidelines and remain at home in her residence the next five days through the weekend. she tested positive on tuesday using both a rapid and pcr test. and we're told that she started taking the anti-viral therapeutic paxlovid prescribed by her dur doctor. all of this raising new parole questions around the president this morning, vice president kamala harris who received her second booster shot earlier this month tweeting, i have no symptoms i and i will continue to isolate and follow cdc guidelines i'm grateful to be both vaccinated and boosted a harris aid telling nbc news she's now taking the anti-viral treatment paxlovid made by pfizer just as the administration is taking steps to expand availability of the therapeutic that's been proven to reduce hospitalizations and death by nearly 90%.

>> we now have plenty available. and anybody who is eligible. anybody who is high risk should be getting paxlovid. >> reporter: most americans have now been infected with covid, including nearly 60% of adults and 75% of children. pfizer is now asking the fda to approve a booster shot for children ages 5-11 the vice president's aids say she tested positive tuesday before a scheduled intelligence briefing with president biden in the oval office and left without seeing the president the white house says harris was last together with the president and first lady eight days earlier at the easter egg roll before spending the week in california, returning to washington monday night. despite its strict protocols, the white house acknowledges the president could still test positive >> it is possible that the president, like any other american, could get covid. the bottom line is he is vaccinated and boosted he is very well protected. >> reporter: the infection for america's most powerful woman is

the late nest string of positive cases among top administration officials and lawmakers. with at least 80 cases stemming from an exclusive dinner in d.c. last month the president has a full plate this week, slated to attend several large gatherings including memorial services for former secretary of state madeleine albright, and former vice president walter mondale. as well as the concern tot annual white house correspondents association dinner on saturday night and for saturday's correspondence all guests have to be fully vaccinated and show proof of a negative test that day. biden says his last covid test was monday and it was negative house minority leader kevin mccarthy was concerned about rhetoric by members of his own party in the days of the capitol riot shining new light on the

and experts say economic issues may be with us for a while nervous investors watching wall street this morning after the markets tumbled tuesday. the dow down some 800 points, while the tech heavy nasdaq dropped more than 500 points to its lowest close since 2020. that dive driven in part by a tesla stock slump, which happened after the company's ceo elon musk moved to buy twitter this week for $44 billion. global concern, like higher covid rates and lock downs in china and the war this ukraine are driving the selloff. but the slide's also being blamed on soaring inflation and fears of possible recession. prices are climbing for americans who are spending more on everything from groceries to gasoline. >> we have prices rising for a lot of things. at the fastest rate they have ever risen for a while for decades. >> reporter: the cost of food up nearly 9%, while gas prices jumped more than 18% the last
