we are going to be running a few degrees cooler. temperatures will top out in the mid to upper silkts for most of the bay area. a couple of low 70s. as side from that, we'll get good sunshine into the afternoon. let's get a look at traffic with mike. in san jose there's been a crash on the grid for a while. we're just starting to see some slowing. i believe that means crews probably have arrived and may be hooking up one car here, southbound 85 heading toward the merge with 101, heading toward morgan hill, gilroy. everything moving smooth outside after that one portion. everything north of there just fine. the overnight construction cleared from the caldecott in the westbound direction t. san mateo bridge is moving smoothly, but there may be gusty winds. use caution. back to you. >> thanks, mike. an emotional reunion as a south bay mother gets a chance to personally thank a man who helped bring her kidnapped baby back home. >> the mother of 3-month-old

baby brandon cuellar told us she wanted to personally thank the people who helped save her son. >> let's check in with kris sanchez right now. we want to meet that little baby. >> reporter: he's super adorable. so good to know he's healthy and happy and back in his mother's arms. she says she feels so grateful to the police and the members of the community who saw something and said something and made sure that the baby got back home. >> are you with your mommy? praise the lord. >> reporter: that was the moment when mother jessica ayala got to introduce her son to the person who helped locate the vehicle.

she said the 20 hours that her son was gone were agonizing. while she's happy to have her son back, she has a message for the suspects, too. >> translator: i feel really happy. i feel like my life and my soul came back to my body. i would never wish this upon anyone. they need to get what they deserve because you should never deserve this to anybody. no mother should ever have to go through this. >> reporter: these are the three suspects who will in court this afternoon to face four different charges. jose roman portillo who police say took the baby and in whose home the baby was found on tuesday. yesenia guadalupe ramirez who was with the grandmother the day the baby was kidnapped. police say she's a family friend, and her husband, baldomeo sandoval. jessica ayala says yesenia was a frequent visitor to her home through her pregnancy and always

interested in being around the baby. police say the kidnapping was planned from the moment the shopping trip happened with the grandmother to portillo showing up with a baby carrier to the home. the three suspects will be charged with four counts that we know of. one is kidnapping. the other is planning to kidnap and we'll see what the other charges are. when they're in court, we'll be in there, too. for "today in the bay," kris sanchez. our updates will continue online with the latest information. we have uploaded the entire interview with baby brandon's mother along with a translation. go to nbcbayarea.com to watch it. a defrocked east bay catholic priest is due in court. stephen keysly is a convicted sexual predator who formerly served as a priest in four east bay sit tess. he was arrested april 16 after investigators say his car plowed

into a couple in rock moore. the man died. happening today the search is on for a suspected bank robber in the north bay. novato police are asking for help identifying this man. they say over the weekend he slipped a note to a teller demanding cash from a clays bank and left the area on foot. police are not saying how much money he got away with it. president biden ready to make a new plea to help ukraine. here is a live look at the white house this morning. the president expected to ask congress to approve a massive new aid package with funding through the summer months. meanwhile, the united nations secretary is in ukraine this morning. this is where he's scheduled to meet with president volodymyr zelenskyy. this as russian forces continue to circle in on a steel plant in mariupol. this is considered to be the city's last ukrainian holdout. u.n. leaders are trying to coordinate evacuation plans for

civilians still trapped there. there's new video following a missile attack on kharkiv. at least one person has died. breaking while you were sleeping, freed american trevor reed arrived in texas overnight. photos with a tweet sent out by texas congressman. russia released him yesterday in a prison exchange. he was serving nine years for assaulting russian police officers. the u.s. released a russian drug trafficker. happening today, san francisco launches a new program allowing off-duty deputies to assist as retail security guards. city leaders approved that plan after a string of so-called flash mob robberies where the group of thieves rush in, steal all the things they can put their hands on and rushing out. stores will be able to hire deputies to work overtime hours. police are already allowed to offer some protections, but the number of available officers are unable to meet the demand right

now. a supervisor who authorized that program will kick start the program in chinatown. a new development for the downtown west project around diridon station. as "the mercury news" reports, cal train is finalizing plans for two office towers that would cover more than 1 million square feet. the towers would sit near dear done. so far there's no timeline for construction. at 5:08. a new look at downtown san jose. vianey arana, you've been talking about that wind advisory. >> yes, the national weather service registered a 61-mile-per-hour wind gust at the altamont. it's going to be one of those days where we have to be careful. the rain did help a little. you can see napa, the areas in

orange are in the wind advisory. that's going to be in place until about 11:00 a.m. poibility of downed trees. this will remain a threat all day long. i still looks like it's going to be gusty into the afternoon. in case you're wondering about the temperatures, here is a closer look at the daytime highs. mid to upper 60s today. concord 69, san jose 66, morgan hill 67. if you're heading to san francisco, it's going to be gusty around the coastline as well, 60 degrees for san francisco. now, i know mike has a look at some gas prices. >> folks will talk about the cheaper options in these areas like fairfield in the north bay out of valero. $5.09, cash only. in livermore, gas and shop on vasco road, $5.25, cash only. same thing for morgan hill, $5.19 at the 76 on monterey

winds are calm for now. but expect to see the wind pick up in the afternoon. 15 to 25 miles per hour. in the north bay mountains and the east bay hills, a wind advisory remains in effect. we'll talk about the timing of this coming up. getting a little break from the wind here in oakland, but the commute is building as well on the freeway. southbound with all the headlines headed tore union city. we'll see what happens when folks are coming out of contra kofrt that county. a senior executive from twitter is getting hateful messages after her soon to be bos elon musk tweeted her. she's the twitter's top lawyer. the man in the picture is tim pool, a youtuber. he's asking her questions about bias at twitter, and in the pictures she's deflecting. a look at the reactions show some twitter users supporting

musk. this is not the first time musk has directed criticism at current twitter employees. under the terms of the buyout musk is not supposed to disparage the company or his people. his tweets have left some people to wonder if he's really serious about buying twitter. we say musk buys twitter. really it's musk is in the process of buying twitter. it's not finished yet. the pictures come from this episode of the joe rogan pod cat. gadde answers lots of questions in a straightforward manner. we turned down the audio because they're talking about why a twitter user has been suspended and they're using the words that got that user suspended. i posted the video to twitter if you want to watch it. the former head of twitter, dick costolo has his own tweets for musk starting with bullying is not leadership. continuing with, you're making

satellite radar, we've got wind pushing a lot of that cloud cover east. current temperatures, as you head out the door, in the 40s right now. 48 in oakland, 45 in dublin, 47 in san jose. our forecasted highs for this afternoon, we're going to keep that on-again off-again wind. not everybody is going to get the really gusty winds. it will get breezy through the afternoon. 56 degrees in san jose. 67 in morgan hill. 68 in martinez. 60 degrees? san francisco. the high wind advisory especially for the north bay and east bay hills. all the highlighted areas, danville, concord, this is going to remain a threat. again, this is until 11:00 a.m. this could get extended because the model runs do show the winds continuing into the afternoon. if you look at the time stamp right up here, 7:30, gusty conditions remain for voes and

san francisco. winds pick up for the south bay. 20, 25-plus miles per hour. the winds stick around beyond that 11:00 a.m. expiration of the wind advisory and really calm down and diminish heading into early friday morning, right around 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 a.m. we'll start to see the winds remain much calmer. as far as the 60s go in our forecast, it's going to be another dry day. but the sunshine is going to prevail this afternoon. if you're heading to the city, upper 50s, low 60s. through clearlake, 66, santa rosa 69. long-range outlook shows the wind today. but if i take it through friday, saturday, sunday, look what happens to our north. we have a system that's going to pass by. and this could bring the possibility of some shower activity mainly into monday. so there's an early morning chance that could happen. notice the seven-day forecast includes winds from the

northwest. they remain breezy into friday and saturday. the daytime highs will be in the mid and upper 60s. heading to monday, we get the a.m. drizzle chance. that is the rain that dirties your car, but not enough to be significant accumulations throughout the bay area. however, long-range outlook does show the second week of may a good possibility of maybe a formation of a storm. that may bring us some late rain to the bay area. something we definitely should have seen in april, but we'll take it in may. let's get a look at how the roads are doing with mike. overall green sensors dominate the map. we did get word of a new crash. there's a rig -- sounds like they lost a load off the back of their truck and onto the roadway, 280 around mclaughlin. i haven't seen slowing in either direction. we'll wait for clarification once chp gets on scene around

children. they say the injections are safe to use in children over 6 months old. if approved, millions in that age group could get the shot by this summer. moderna says its vaccine is 51% effective in preventing infection from 6 months to 2 years and goes to 37% for ages 2 to 5 it may seem like low numbers. medical experts say any protection for that age group is key. >> what they found in there is the effectiveness against getting sick, that means even sniffles, mild illness, they found it was very effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalizations and death, and that's what's important. >> right now children as young as 5 can be vaccinated with the pfizer vaccine. an estimated 18 million younger children are currently unprotected against the virus. later this morning b.a.r.t. will decide whether or not to restart the mask requirement on its trains. but strongly recommended. >> reporter: correct. good morning, marcus. as you're well aware, b.a.r.t. dropped its mask requirement after the feds and the state of california dropped their mask mandate for public transit. at its regular meeting, though, later this morning, the b.a.r.t. board of directors will consider reimplementing a mask mandate that would run through july 18th. right now as you mentioned, the transit agency strongly recommends people wear masks. yesterday morning most riders were masked. a few were not. >> i don't wong we need masks. >> we can't go on forever with that. we can't go on forever. >> i feel it's more safe than not wearing mask. even though i'm vaccinated. >> makes me feel safer. covid isn't gone. >> it needs to be an individual decision, so each person should do what they need to do for

this is just outside of tracy. cal fire says the fire burned 50 acres before it was fully under control. luckily no one was hurt. 5:35 right now. happening today, we're expecting to learn details about an east bay woman missing for months. 24-year-old alexis gabe disappeared in late january. she was last seen in antioch, but her car was found abandoned in oakley. there's been no trace of her since. no suspects announced. her family recently revealed a new reward of $10,000. investigators will provide an update at 11:00 a.m. at oakley city hall. now to a story you'll only see here on nbc bay area. two men demanding better training for fast food restaurant employees. they claim they were refused drive-through service because they are deaf. cesa ayala was visit ag friend

in livermore last weekend. he says they went to a jack-in-the-box drive-through after midnight on saturday. after several failed attempts to communicate with employees, they started filming. at one point a worker can be heard on that video saying he's going on break, but then the driver right behind them was able to place an order. >> when somebody is hired, those people should be trained on how to work with the deaf and disabled thoroughly to make sure that their customers are given complete access. so education is the most important part. >> now, he decided not to leave and says someone at the restaurant called police. livermore police are calling this a civil issue, not a criminal one. we reached out to jack-in-the-box for response but have not yet heard back. 5:37 this morning. the warriors are cruising into the second round of the nba playoffs. this is after closing out denver in the game last night at chase center. >> it was a close one. dub nation getting ready to snap

"today in the bay's" sierra johnson is outside the chase center. a lot for sports fans to be following and sell rating right now. >> reporter: good morning. that's exactly right. things right now understandably quiet. last night was a completely different story. this place was a mad house. the warriors clinching a spot to the semifinal -- conference semifinals. maybe they made it too exciting for warriors fans. the dubs were down eight points at the start of the fourth quarter, but came up with the clutch shots down the stretch. gary payton jr. three-pointer gave the warriors a two-point lead, then steph curry sealed it. winning the series 4-1. after that draymond green talked about the warriors leaving oakland arena to make new memories here at the chase center. >> this is a different place.

we have to come here and build this home court. i think we're starting to do that. >> reporter: we love to see it. the warriors next face the winner of the memphis/minnesota series. later today tickets will go on sale this morning. the team says presale events start today. single game tickets for the general public go on sale tomorrow. last night was busy for bay area sports fans. less than one mile from here the giants and a's were battling it out at the bay bridge series. the a's got to a leadoff home run and that held all nine wings as they won the game in a 1-0 shutout. the team split the two-game series which picks up again in early august at the coliseum. let's not also forget football fans are getting ready for tonight's first round nfl draft. this is a live look at las vegas outside the bellagio.

on facebook you'll find me at scott mcgrew tv. an all new report highlighting the health crisis. i spoke with sheri johnson, the director of the university of wisconsin population health institute. we talked about the annual county health rankings. >> in your area of the country, we learned that the highest ranking county is marin and the lowest is trinity. health that includes many factors related to how long and here in the bay area we like to think we're outgoing, outdoorsy, would try to get exercise. but also, people are being impacted by a number of things. one is mental health, and we know that's part of the survey. talk to us about what you used to come up with the calculation. >> we used this model of health

that shows that health is determined by many factors, things like the social and economic environment, income and education and family and social support, as well as health behaviors like how much physical activity you're getting or how much healthy food you're able to get. we also include measures of access to clinical care including, for example, how many mental health providers are in the local area. it's a multifactor model that shows many things are driving how long and how well people live in a local place. >> what about the pandemic? did we see a big impact within this year or even last year's study of the how the impact of the pandemic is affecting people's lives and health? >> what we learned really is prior to the pandemic, these social and economic conditions were creating opportunities for some people to be healthy but not for others. that was amplified and revealed in the pandemic. our data only includes deaths

from covid-19 through the end of 2020, so it may not really fully reflect the true and full impact of covid-19 for several years to come. what we do know, though, is there are solutions that we can start to put in place now that will help us to advance a just recovery that centers economic security for everyone. >> what are some of the things that we can do?while marin is at the top, which is in our area, there are others that -- other areas that may be lacking. >> exactly. the solutions that we lift up are around economic security, so things like a living wage and affordable child care. in san francisco, an average family taking care of two children is spending 27% of their income on child care expenses alone. the federal government recommends that we only spend about 7% of our income on child care. so that's a threefold difference between what's recommended and

. 5:57 for you right now. turning to our climate in crisis. just one day after east bay imposed water emergency, the metropolitan water district is requiring 6 million people to cut their water usage. that means residents and businesses can only water their lawns one day per week. they need to enforce it or face hefty fines. back in the bay area, a new study found that storms can be getting worse in the coming decades. meteorologist vianey arana in with us this morning. vi, this is not a good thing. >> specifically we're talking about atmospheric rivers and
