"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is here for us. let's talk about baby brandon, how is he doing, and how is the mother doing this morning? >> reporter: the baby is healthy and happy, back at home in his monther's arms. she's feeling disoriented by the whole experience, but so happy to have her son back, and grateful to the police officers who helped bring him home and the good samaritans who did the right thing. take a listen. >> with your mommy. vehicle. brandon's grateful mother told telemundo and nbc bay area that the 20 hours her son was gone were agonizing. while she's happy to have her son back, she has a message. >> i feel really happy. i feel like my life and my soul came back to my body. i would never wish this upon anyone. they need to get what they deserve because you should never do this to anybody. no mother should ever have to go through this. >> reporter: these are the three suspects who will be in court this afternoon. jose roman portillo who police say took the baby and in whose home the baby was found on tuesday. yesenia guadalupe ramirez who was with the grandmother the day the baby was kidnapped. police say she's a family friend, and her husband, baldomeo sandoval. jessica ayala says yesenia was a

for brentwood, san francisco 48. the story today will continue to be the wind. we'll talk about when the wind advisory is set to expire. one of the cameras looking at the bay bridge. it's shaking. emeryville, the camera steady at the toll plaza where we see the backup. the slowdown continues for highway 87 in san jose. we'll track that coming up. good morning. very happy thursday to you. breaking news on the business front. economists say the u.s. economy contracted in the first quarter. data shows the gdp decreased at an annual rate of negative 1.4%. this may not be as bad as it sounds. the lack of car sales helped suppress the number. there are very few cars to buy. a slowdown in government spending also depressed the number. there's a huge increase in defense spending. bottom line, don't panic. other news, a senior executive at twitter is getting hateful, sometimes racist messages after elon musk tweeted a picture of her in a meme.

the woman in the picture is vijaya gadde, she's twitter's top lawyer. the man in the picture, tim pool is a youtuber. he's asking her questions about bias at twitter, and their discussion goes around in a circle. under terms of the buyout, musk is not supposed to disparage the company and his people. his tweets have left some people to wonder if musk is serious about buying twitter. the deal is not finished yet. the pictures come from this episode of the joe rogan podcast. the irony is that gadde is there and answers lots of questions in a very straightforward manner. we turned down the audio because they're talking about why a certain twitter user has been suspended. they're using some of the words that got the user suspended. i posted the video with audio to, of course, twitter if you want to watch it. the former head of twitter,

pass, but it looks like the system is going to stay to our north. i actually updated the forecast. for monday we had on again off again rain chances. the rain will stay pretty far north. we won't get to see that heading into monday which is going to leave us dry over the next seven days here, not just for san francisco but also for inland areas. we get a bit of a warmup on the way heading into the weekend. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> we have one issue in the south bay, north 87. the sensors are changing. that report of a crash at taylor is reflected in the slower drive, traveling north in your commute direction. 87 looks like it's recovering, though chp's update hasn't hit just yet. we've seen it reflected in the speed sensors. the second build is kicking in for the south bay. the volume is building for silicon valley. a pretty smooth drive, two crashes over the castro valley y could be an issue.

aren't too cold. starting in the 40s. the forecasted highs this afternoon will be in the 60s. keep in mind, on and off again wind. we've seen gusts of 60-plus miles per hour. that's going to be the story for this afternoon. we're not worried about rain heading into the weekend. i'll have a closer look at your extended forecast coming up. breaking news this morning. moderna requesting the fda approve its covid vaccine for the youngest children. the drugmaker says its injections are now safe to use in children over six months old. if approved, millions in that age group could get the shot by this summer. moderna says its vaccine is 51% effective in preventing infection for 6 months to 2 years. it goes to 37% effectiveness for ages 2 to 5. while those may seem like low numbers, medical experts say any protection for that group is key.

expecting to learn new details about an east bay woman missing for months. 24-year-old alexis gabe disappeared in late january. she was last seen in antioch, but her car was found abandoned in oakley. there's been no trace of her since and no suspects announced. her family recently revealed a new reward of $10,000. investigators will provide an update at 11:00 a.m. at oakley city hall. a live look in san francisco bay. this is where later today the carnival cruise ship will embark from san francisco with passengers for the first time since the pandemic. carnival will start making four and five-day trips from san francisco down to baja mexico and back. this comes after cdc lifted its risk advisory for cruise ship travel, following two years of issuing warnings to travelers. okay. meantime, the warriors are

outlook coming up. after what looked like a completely clear toll plaza, we're back to what you expect out of richmond. that's a tough lane change. be careful out there, folks. at least they're signaling. >> very important to be careful. take a look at this. breaking news out of los angeles. at least one california highway patrol officer was injured this morning when a patrol cruiser was struck by another driver. knee /*ey.d in the city of down we know one person is in custody. it happened after chp officers were responding to a request for assistance from an officer after stopping to investigate the collision, the officer's cruiser was struck by an suv. there was a burned cruiser on the side of the freeway. can you make it out there? an suv was stopped nearby. a witness says the other vehicle rear-ended the patrol car.

one officer was taken to the hospital. we don't have details on his condition. but the crash closed all lanes of eastbound 105 freeway. we already know what a nightmare l.a. traffic can be. this happened in orange county near downey. president biden will make an abbreviated appearance at the correspondents dinner. >> coronavirus has gotten really close to the president who, of course, is double vaccinated and boosted, but still the oldest president we've ever had. the president continues to make public appearances. here he is recognizing the teacher of the year, kurt russell, there on the far left. the first lady, a teacher herself, joined him in the west wing ceremony.

>> if you got to do one thing to make sure the nation succeeded in the next two generations, what would you do? you'd want, i would say, literally have the best educated public in the world. >> on wednesday president biden attended madeleine albright's funeral at the national cathedral. you can see other past presidents and vice presidents there as well, all of them wearing masks. former president obama tested positive last month. the white house says president biden will wear a mask to the correspondent's dinner, too. that's obama in this video. he was the last president to attend one. trump refused his first invitation, and then the pandemic canceled the last two. sort of telling. dr. anthony fauci said he's not coming to the dinner citing the risk of contracting the virus. he's 81. he said he came to that decision after, quote, my individual assessment of my personal risk. the risk is higher for older people. president trump was 73 when he contracted coronavirus. we hadn't invented vaccines when he got sick, of course. this is video from walter reed at the time. trump was far, far more ill than we first knew.

vice president harris who tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week continues to work in isolation from her home. she says she's feeling fine. she was traveling just before the test result, so she was not in contact with the president. president biden will speak to the american public about the state of the war in ukraine later this morning. that war is threatening to spill into moldova which is right here. the russians have been warning nato allies not to send weapons. we've been sending heavier and heavier weapons. in fact, here is new video from the indiana national guard which is giving up its armored personnel carriers and sending them to ukraine. these are m-113s. these were all built in san jose. if you're an old timer from san diego, you'll remember the factory was right near the airport where the earthquakes stadium is now. we'll be tracking all of

entire city. economic development is another one and the homeless issue. it seems like we talk about that during every election and we're back at it again. those are the main ones. the thing that stands out to me is none of these four candidates that you see on the screen lives east of highway 101. i know that's been a sore subject for a lot of the residents who live -- probably a quarter of the residents in san jose live on that side. we'll see how they plan to address the issues that affect those who live on the east side. >> i was going to bring up that very thing. that's a huge representation of the community as well. san jose being the biggest city in the bay area. it's really important. >> it is. like i said, it's been a sore subject. we have our elected city council member from the east side, but that's one voice. from what i'm hearing from residents, they want a mayor who will spend some time on the east

side, not just show up for photo ops and not just show up for press conferences here and there. they want a mayor who will be there for the long haul and listen to not just the west side, the north side, the south side, downtown, but also the east side. >> if one candidate doesn't receive 50% of the vote in january, what happens then? >> the top two will be in a runoff at that point. they will run for the same position, start their campaign fund-raising again. and then the winner of the november election will become the next mayor of san jose. that is if nobody gets 50% plus one. they need that one extra vote. >> they're all fighting hard for it. i've seen those signs pop up in a lot of different places. thanks so much, damian. we look forward to the event. let's get a look at the forecast, meteorologist vianey arana has been talking about the strong winds this morning.

vi, how is it shaping up for us? >> it's going to be pretty gusty. i have an update on the drought monitor that gets released and updated every thursday. i'll get to that in a second. beautiful view in san francisco. you can see the golden gate bridge in the distance. it is going to be really gusty. current temperatures out the door in the 40s. so not too cold. there's going to be that wind advisory in place for the north bay, calistoga area, but also the east bay hills. the highlighted areas, gusts up close to 60 miles per hour. we did see some of the rain which helped ease the fire danger concerns. there's a lot of dry brush out there. it will be something we continue to monitor. we have high pressure that's keeping us dry, the system to our north. it looks like we'll stay dry, not just the weekend but into the first week of may. rain chances, we have to stay tuned. by sunday we had a system that

will pass to the north, potentially bringing shower activity. it looks like it will be too farther north. i've removed the rain chances. the drought monitor update, here is a closer look at what we saw. not much of an improvement. last week we were at 40.81, extreme d4 category. this morning 40.56. 95.18 in severe drought. that's the entire state of california. some improvement, definitely not significant improvement. over the next seven days, one thing you'll also notice is going to be the warmup in the forecast. we'll go from upper 60s to upper 80s. let's get a check of traffic with mike. >> pretty calm. over on the bay bridge, a hazard on the lower deck. it's mild in both directions compared to what we can see on a thursday. a smooth drive. here is the other issues in the
