wall street looking like it's going to start in the red on this friday morning, after yesterday's big gains. the reason, we got disappointing earnings last night from amazon and apple. amazon reporting its first quarterly loss in seven years as it deals with rising labor and shipping costs, and it says that consumers are starting to spend a bit less. apple's results beating forecasts on strong iphone sales but companies warning that revenue could take a big hit this quarter due to those covid lockdowns in china, where it makes the majority of its products and the continued chip shortage. the markets surging yesterday with the dow up more than 600 points and the nasdaq driven by all the big tech stocks was up 3%, but when you look at the month and the last trading day of the month, the dow off more than 2% for april, the nasdaq, well, it has been a cruel april indeed, down 9.5% on pace for its worst month since march of

2020. this morning, we're waiting for some economic data, we'll get reports on personal income and spending, manufacturing and consumer sentiment. and set your calendar, amazon prime day will be back in july this year. the annual shopping day which targets prime members has shifted around the last couple of years. it was in october in 2020 and june last year. amazon making that announcement as part of its earnings report but the company not sharing the specific date at this point or what it expects but i would think amazon devices are at the top of the list. airbnb is telling employees they can work remotely forever. ceo brian chesky saying while a small number of roles will be required to be performed in the office, majority of employees don't have to come in if they don't want to. they won't have to take a pay cut if they move away from

cities near the company's offices. employees can live and work in more than 170 countries for up to 90 days a year in each location. that's as long as they keep a permanent address on file. kris, that sounds pretty good. i've been going back in the office for my later shifts and it's hard. it's just louder there than it is at home. >> it's louder, there are a lot more folks that you haven't seen in a while so you want to catch up and say hello, so yeah, it's definitely a challenge to get things done. i suggest big headphones. you don't even have to turn them on. >> really is. >> thanks, bertha, maybe get those on amazon prime day. everyone is dealing with inflation of course, but for those trying to make it in the bay, things are getting a lot harder a lot faster. ahead on "today in the bay," we talk with a chief economist about the high demand in housing, and he breaks down tips for first-time home buyers. we'll be right back.

it is 4:47 on a friday morning and the winds are a lot calmer than what we saw yesterday but we've still got some breezy locations throughout. a live look right now in san francisco, take a look at that, city skyline looking good. we aren't seeing as many clouds right now. we will get some high clouds, clear my throat, rolling through san jose downtown. it is going to be dry through today. look at the current temperatures right now as you head out the door in the 40s and overall mild
4:48 am
to start, not too cold. let's look at the winds right now. notice -- oh my goodness, what is happening? it's going to be in the 6 to 7-mile-per-hour range but it is breezy overall and wind gusts, 10, 15 miles per hour until about 11:30 and then the winds start to pick up right around 4:00, around the coastline. look at san francisco 30-mile-per-hour winds, down through san jose 20-plus but again no wind advisories in effect right now and we are expecting the winds to remain breezy to calm into early saturday morning. forecasted highs for this afternoon will be in the mid and upper 60s. san jose 66 degrees. morgan hill 67. east san jose 66, and take a look at the interior valleys, concord will be comfortable but as we head in towards the later portion of your saturday and sunday, our temperatures are going to bump up so now my graphics are going a little crazy and so is my clicker.
4:49 am
i think it's too early on a friday morning. doesn't want to work. we are expecting to stay dry and sunny through saturday and sunday, which is the good news there. yeah, this graphic is going a little cuckoo. but the temperatures will warm up into the 70s. now i can't advance. this is just great, mike. we'll send it over to you now. >> it's friday, right? it's friday friday, so that's all right. nothing urgent, vianey was talking about the wind advisories. chp said the san mateo bridge expansion, it says "high winds on bridge." may be the case as you travel across the bridge, the 60-mile-per-hour winds vianey was talking about yesterday. much calmer, still hold on 10:00 and 2:00 or 3:00 and 6:00, depending what you learned or whatever is safest for the conditions as well. we have breezes across the dumbarton bridge and the san mateo bridge but the overnight roadwork closing one lane has completely cleared from the
4:50 am
span. we saw that on the live shot and took a look on the grid as well. no major problems south bay through south county and coming across the carquinez bridge and benicia bridges. you don't need me to tell you prices are on the rise from gas to essential items like food but prices are sitting at some of the highest we've seen in decades and causing concern for people trying to make it in the bay. our gross domestic product, the gdp slumped to an annual rate of 1.4%, making it the worst quarter in two years. our laura garcia talked with scott anderson, who is the chief economist from bank of the west about this trend. >> it was a terrible number, much worse than expected, first contraction since the pandemic, so consumers are slowing down their spending a little bit, still consumer spend something holding up pretty well. business spending was okay. what really subtracted from the gdp number in the first quarter
4:51 am
was the trade balance. we're just importing too much and not exporting enough. that's subtracted almost four percentage points and inventories that weren't built up as quickly in the fourth quarter. 'a little bit deceiving. the economy is still probably stronger than the gdp number makes it out to be. >> trying to recover from the pandemic. during the first year so many left the bay area for suburbs to work from somewhere else. it was pretty severe here. how hard did that hit our economy and are you seeing people ease back as we return to the workplace post pandemic? >> you're right. the bay area was hit a lot harder than a lot of other parts of the nation and even parts of california. the bay area over the past year has actually been lagging the rest of the state in terms of job creation, about 43% of the jobs that have been created over the past year in the bay area have been just the rebound in
4:52 am
leisure and hospitality jobs, so we do see services job growth information, technology firms are still hiring here, but it isn't as strong as it was in the last expansion, and you know, it's the cost of living, housing affordability, and we saw population decline in the bay area 2.5% last year, it's the worst i think in the history of the bay area, and again, it's a reflection of people being able to work from anywhere they want, and just people not wanting to face the high cost of living here. >> sure, exactly. in fact, some of the bay area existing home sales fell from a year ago for the sixth consecutive month in february, but yet we're still seeing low inventory out there, and it seems like what is out there gets snatched up so quickly. >> you're right. you know, the average home sale only takes a little bit over a week. we are seeing a little bit of lengthening of that time period but there's still way too much
4:53 am
demand, not enough existing inventory and home builders can't find lots to build and are facing building shortages and labor shortages as well. so we do think the housing market rebound in california and the bay area is starting to fade. mortgage rates have moved up over comfortable over 5% and the 30-year mortgage rate over two percentage points higher than where they started the year and we are starting to see that affect people's ability to buy homes, mortgage applications are down 20% from a year ago so this will be more of a gradual slowdown, rebalancing supply and demand. we're not expecting home prices to crash here, anything like what we saw coming out of the last housing bubble. >> all right, you can see that full interview with laura, we talk about inflation, how your family can deal with the rising costs of just about everything, you can watch that on the nbc bay area app. download it for roku, apple tv
