british intelligence now estimates the russians have lost 15,000 killed in action in ukraine. that's a staggering number. that's three times, nearly four times as many american soldiers killed in iraq over the course of more than ten years. ukraine war is just a few months old. the u.n. secretary-general visited kyiv yesterday. two russian rockets hit the city around the same time. the head of the u.n. trying to negotiate safe passages for refugees, particularly out of mariupol. we'll be watching all that happens today, particularly the phone call between the two, we should get a readout later this morning. we'll talk it on twitter, i'm @scottmcgrew. now to making it in the bay. i'm not the first to tell you prices are on the rise from gas to essential items like food. prices sitting at some of the highest we've seen in decades and cause for a lot of concern. gross domestic product slumped to an an actual rate of 1.4%, making it the worst quarter in two years.
5:47 am
i spoke to scott anderson from bank of the west about the trend. >> it was a terrible number, much worse than expected, first contraction since the pandemic, so consumers are slowing down their spending a little bit, still consumer spending is holding up pretty well. business spending was okay. what really subtracted from the gdp number in the first quarter was the trade balance. we're just importing too much and not exporting enough. that's subtracted almost four percentage points and inventories that weren't built up as quickly in the fourth quarter. so it's a little bit deceiving. the economy is still probably stronger than the gdp number makes it out to be. >> we're trying to recover from the pandemic. during the first year so many left the bay area for suburbs to work from somewhere else. it was pretty severe here. how hard did that hit our
5:48 am
economy and are you seeing people ease back as we return to the workplace post pandemic? >> you're right. the bay area was hit a lot harder than a lot of other parts of the nation and even parts of california. the bay area over the past year has actually been lagging the rest of the state in terms of job creation, about 43% of the jobs that have been created over the past year in the bay area have been just the rebound in leisure and hospitality jobs, so we do see services job growth information, technology firms are still hiring here, but it isn't as strong as it was in the last expansion, and you know, it's the cost of living, housing affordability, and we saw population decline in the bay area 2.5% last year, it's the worst i think in the history of the bay area, and again, it's a reflection of people being able to work from anywhere they want, and just people not wanting to face the high cost of living here. >> sure, exactly.
5:49 am
in fact, some of the bay area existing home sales fell from a year ago for the sixth consecutive month in february, but yet we're still seeing low inventory out there, and it seems like what is out there gets snatched up so quickly. >> you're right. you know, the average home sale only takes a little bit over a week. we are seeing a little bit of lengthening of that time period but there's still way too much demand, not enough existing inventory and home builders can't find lots to build and are facing building shortages and labor shortages as well. so we do think the housing market rebound in california and the bay area is starting to fade. mortgage rates have moved up over comfortable over 5% and the 30-year mortgage rate over two percentage points higher than where they started the year and we are starting to see that affect people's ability to buy homes, mortgage applications are down 20% from a year ago, so
5:50 am
