this is "today" with peter alexander and kristen welker. >> welcome to "today." off to a good start. i realize i should have tried on the tux. >> hopefully it fits. i have my dress ready to go. i think a lot of people looking forward to getting back to the tradition. we will preview that. we are covering several developing stories this morning. including growing fears in china that the capital of beijing may be placed in full lockdown as the chinese government doubles down on the strict zero covid policy raising concerns of disruption to the global supply chain. we are following the manhunt in alabama after the suspect at a corrections officer escorting him to court never arrived.

we will have the latest on all of that straight ahead. right now, we begin with the top story. the efforts to get to the thousands of people still trapped inside that steel plant in mariupol. the effort to get them somewhere safe. nbc's raf sanchez is in lviv. raf, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. president zelenskyy's office said they he were closer to the evacuation of the civilians of mariupol. more than 24 hours later he, there is no way out of the steel plant. conditions are growing desperate by the hour. this p morning, hoping of evacuating women and children from the mariupol steel plant hanging by a thread. city officials posting this video of russian forces under fire as gun battles rage in the streets around the factory. and vladimir putin's forces continuing to rain down fire with heavy weapons.

back here at home tributes growing for willy joseph cancel who was killed this week fighting in ukraine. he is the first u.s. citizen believed to be killed in the conflict. we have kathy park with more. >> reporter: good morning. he was a new york native and he felt compelled to serve at a young age. he once worked as a volunteer firefighter in the community and become a marine and correctional officer. he was a father as well. this morning, grieve for willy joseph cancel. the marine who died along ukrainian forces. >> i am a former marine. i know he wanted to serve for freedom. he paid the ultimate sacrifice. >> reporter: willy's mother confirming his death to cnn. saying he was killed monday

working with a private military contractor. the news is a devastating blow for orange county, new york. >> a lot of kids don't understand what they want to do in life. he figured it out. >> reporter: the county executive writing we will never forget willy's bravery and sacrifice. his wife telling fox news he went wanting to help people. he felt that was his main mission in life. adding they have a 7 month old son who will now be without a water. willy lived and worked in tennessee where he was a correctional officer and working to have a career in law enforcement. in 2020, a military judge convicted him of violating a lawful general order and was given a bad conduct discharge. the state department was monitoring the situation.

>> we are reaching out to the family to learn more details. i would be remiss if i didn't take this opportunity to reiterate what we said for weeks now. americans should not travel to ukraine. it is inherently dangerous. >> reporter: despite the warning, thousands of foreign fighters, including americans have traveled to support ukraine. putting their lives on the line for a battle nearing the third month. and the details on the work willy did in ukraine are unclear and so are the circumstances. family members don't know how he died and his body has not been found. when president biden was asked about his death, he replied it is sad. he left a little baby behind. kristen and peter. >> the president moved by this. kathy, thank you. president biden's massive $33 billion request for new aid to ukraine may face complications on capitol hill. nbc's josh lederman has the latest from the white house.

>> reporter: peter, good morning. this request signals the u.s. is committing to help ukraine for the long haul and the white house expects this war to drag on. the biden administration asking for five months of funding. set aside like a bank account that the president can draw down. mr. biden saying the cost of the fight is not cheap. the aid itself is popular with democrats and republicans. it is already hitting snags. the white house wants one vote covering ukraine and emergency covid funding. republicans want the issues kept separate and holding up the covid part over dispute about the title 42 border policy. peter. >> josh, the president is weighing what to do about the issue that is top of mind for millions of americans. college debt. what is the likelihood there is some new action coming on for giving student loans? >> reporter: likely, peter. he will decide in the next

in children. in the u.s., nine states reporting cases. the outbreak could be to blame for a death in wisconsin. the causes have been ruled out including the hepatitis b virus. in the new report, the cdc detailed a culprit. adenovirus. dr. marcus buckner helped treat the infections. >> when you noticed the pattern, what went through your mind? >> it was unusual and scary. we kept seeing more and more cases into the winter months which really made us realize we found something. >> reporter: the report also revealed the patients were 6 and under. three with acute liver failure and vomiting and diarrhea were

damaging as many as 100 structures. over a dozen tornados reported from nebraska through eastern kansas. after seeing visuals like that, as peter was saying, we have storms like that today, you and you probably wonder if we're in for the same intensity. we have wind gusts that could hypothesis 60 miles per hour. the risk not as elevated as yesterday but a tornado or two is possible. as far as timing goes, we will see the bulk of the severe weather pushing through from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. if you saw your city in the yellow swath from little rock through st. louis, chicago, keep in mind storms will be impacting your plans through saturday. we start to see an elevated risk for severe weather. it is there where we could get actually a few tornados possible

in the bullseye in amarillo tomorrow. on monday, oklahoma city, tulsa, wichita, we could see a few tornados. they are likely right now. as far as the rest of the country is faring, we anticipate a good amount of rain that could bring soaking >> and 52 degrees right now. waking up in san francisco to pretty clear skies. we have a couple clouds out there. 53 degrees by about 7:00 a.m. eventually into those 60s. san jose, 51 degrees right now. wind speeds are calmed down through the south bay. up through santa rosa, 49 degrees. it'll get to the upper 60s. 10:00, we're expecting clear skies to start and sunshine into the afternoon. and that's the forecast in your neighborhood. kristin, peter, back to you. >> all right, somara.

good morning. thank you for joining us on this saturday, april 30th. i'm kira klapper. the california teachers association is standing with east bay teachers who went on strike. many of the striking teachers in oakland and their students attended a block party instead of school yesterday, blasting the plan to close or consolidate 11 schools in oakland. enrollment and budgetary issues make the closures necessary. teachers say it'd disproportionately impact black and brown communities. >> there's plenty of other places they could be cutting

funds from. for instance, consultants, folks at the central office, the rent for the building at 1000 broadway. >> the district says yesterday its strike was illegal and only hurts students. that's a claim the teachers union denies. stanford nurses on the picket line got a boost in support from senator alex padilla. about 5,000 nurses walked out last week, protesting work conditions and wages. stanford says it is addressing the issues with its offer for the nurses. padilla told the nurses they have support from lawmakers. both sides met with a federal mediator yesterday, but there has been no word on how those talks went. let's check in for a look at our saturday forecast. >> it is a beautiful start. look at the sunrise over downtown san jose. we are going to be seeing temperatures today pretty much in the 70s and even through the interior valleys, upper 70s and

civilians inside the besieged city of mariupol. city officials posting video of ukrainians trying to keep russian forces at bay as gun battles wage in the streets around the steel plant where hundreds are trapped. meantime, ukraine forces fought to hold off russian attempts to advance in the south and east. a senior u.s. defense official says moscow's defensive is going slower than planned. in alabama, police are searching for two people. a murder suspect and corrections officer. officials say officer vicki white left the jail on friday taking the inmate to court and have not been seen since. inmate casey white is held on a capitol murder charge. he is a serious threat to the public. the two are not related. they share the same last name. the sheriff's office urged people to call 911 if they spot

janis frayer has more. >> reporter: schools, movie theaters and gyms are closed. there is no dining in restaurants. millions are going through multiple rounds of mass testing. this morning, a mass covid testing drag net in beijing. 20 million people. and less than 300 cases reported. three rounds of mass testing at sites like this set up across the city. there's growing anxiety here that a lockdown could be coming. triggering panic buying. at one point, some shelves stripped bare. despite the city assurances they have enough food. they are also skeptical after the chaos over shortages in shanghai. the lockdown there ending its fourth week. about half the city allowed out of their homes, but with restrictions. an apartment building in full

getting pregnant. i have known ton of women. >> reporter: of course, there are stories so many in the group turn to to hold on to hope. ashley and adrian welcomed baby rece in december after a year long journey. they credit support groups with helping them. >> she was able to talk specifics with people who had gone through similar stuff. >> i'm grateful to say it was really good in the end for us. we have only gotten stronger. >> reporter: strength shared by all of the couples we met. determined not to give up. >> what gives you hope? what keeps you going? >> knowing we have a hard case, but there is also hard cases that are successful. >> my hope is our dreams will come true. >> sharing our story has been good. positive things happen. >> i don't believe that hope goes away. i won't. i won't. if it is in your heart and you know that you want to be a parent, find a way.
