monday. take a look at sfo and a live look there, and we will keep the sunshine around, and current temperatures in the 40s in san jose and 49 right now, and 49 in san francisco and oakland is 48. looking at the temperature trend, notice that it is the wind speeds much calmer than what we saw in san francisco, and by the afternoon, we are expecting to see the winds picking up again, and the temperatures will top out in the mid-60s, but some areas are running a few degrees warmer, and when you are thinking about monday though, we will have the changes, and we will guide you through the forecast in a few minutes, kyra. >> okay. we will see you in about 15. we start with the war in ukraine, and house speaker nancy pelosi has led a delegation to meet volodymyr zelenskyy in ukraine. that makes her the highest ranking representative to visit ukraine. she posted this picture of

members of congress to meet with him before going to poland and meet with senior leaders there. she was presented the princess of olga for her efforts to strengthen cooperation. and pelosi is hoping to pass the $33 billion aid package for ukraine requested by president biden. >> andin visiting you to say thank you for your fight for freedom, and that your fight is a fight for everyone. and so, our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done. >> and ukraine's ministry of internal affairs says that russia continued its shelling overnight, and the police reporting that 14 russian shellings on nine cities including mariupol and kharkiv. the ukrainian leaders say that

civilians were killed and that includes children. and now the u.n. is trying to broker a deal to evacuate the rest of the civilians from mariupol, and this is new video from the bombed out city. the people who are still there say they are living in basements to survive, and we just learned this morning that mariupol city council opened an evacuation route an hour ago so that more civilians could escape. russia's foreign minister meanwhile is warning that any weapons shipment to ukraine are fair game as the shipments from the u.s. go to the war torn country. we are getting a look inside of the massive operation to get the weapons in the hands of the ukrainian soldiers. every few hours cargo planes depart for eastern europe, an inside are large artillery pieces which the u.s. defense leaders hoping to stop russia's new advance into eastern ukraine. those involved in the operation says it feels good to know that

the shipments will have an impact. it takes ten hours to fly to the dropoff point in poland and exactly how the weapons get to ukraine is classified for fear of russian attacks. back here locally, we know that the sudden death of a police officer was because of a fentanyl overdose. it is a growing issue across the country, and here in the bay area as more families lose loved ones to the crisis. officer dejon packer was found dead last month and a new officer to the police department, and we have this new report with marianne favro. >> reporter: any san jose police officer using drugs is concerning, and officers will be held accountable. he was a rookie with the san jose p.d. and graduating from the academy in 2021. last month when they conducted a welfare check at his milpitas home, they found the 24-year-old

unresponsive. the santa clara medical examiner's office confirms that he he was at a party with fellow officers tonight before he died. the sources also say that the officers could face internal and criminal investigations. the san jose police chief anthony mata issued a statement that said in part that the full details regarding officer packer's death are still not known, and are being investigated by the milpitas police department and they have our full cooperation. this behavior is not something that we condone, and we will continue to assist the milpitas pd with their investigation. we need to be mindful to the fact that we are not immune to problems that impact society. and this is not alone, because there were 29 deaths in santa clara county, and that number jumped to more than 100 last year.

>> we have had a dramatic increase in deaths to fentanyl toxicity which means that people don't know they are taking fentanyl, and maybe they are buying a pill online or laced in marijuana or any number of substantss. >> reporter: the county just launched a fentanyl working group to combat the problem. >> we are increasing the number of legal folks like the distric networks and theith the behavioral department to do more investigation. >> reporter: packer was known for the standout college football career in san jose state and the work with the force. the chief says as humans we are not perfect and we make mistakes, and wellness is a priority with the force. maryann favro, today in the bay. and another pedestrian was

killed on north capitol avenue and 680, and police say that the driver did stay at the scene. this marks the 30th traffic death with 18 of them being pedestrian-related. and yesterday, an oakland fire department posted these pictures of a traffic accident where first responders said they had to use the jaws of life to get that driver out as the car burned. amazingly the man survived and he is now being treated in the hospital. the search continues for the third person missing after a deadly crash on the san mateo county coast. we told you about this first yesterday morning happening after 9:00 p.m. friday night. a chp truck went through highway

1 on es ka dare row beach, and they tell us that one of the victims was ipolito anaia. >> i just want to take him home. we're puzzled. we're very puzzled. >> investigators would not confirm who else was in the truck, but the chp says a child was one of the people who died. it is still unclear what caused that deadly crash. now to developments to a story we have been tracking for the last week. a tentative agreement has been reached between the striking nurses and stanford health.

about 5,000 nurses between stanford health and lucille packard nurses have been demanding better staffing and working conditions and benefits. late friday, they have reached a deal, and the looking forward t welcoming ours going to be mark labor rallies across the bay area. in san francisco, union members are invited to join at the embarcadero to recreate the march up market street. another rally at 24th and mission at 11:00 a.m. and then roosevelt park at noon, and participants are asked to wear masks. t in santa rosa, a demonstration at 1:00 p.m. at roseland village on san sebastianpole road. and we take you to

the president of the united states. so she is visiting after we have already essentially pledged another $83 billion to ukraine and you couple it together, and we have essentially nearly $50 billion at the ready to help ukraine and at this pace that we are aiding ukraine, we will spend more on this war this year than we spent in each of the last five years in the war in afghanistan, and we have haven't fired a shot in this war, and just ukraine, so what this does is that it does cement the symbolically and financially, that we are joined at the hip with ukraine. the russians are accusing america of fighting a proxy war, and guess what, we are. >> all right. i do want to ask you more about that, but i am going to pivot now on friday, that it was announced that families and adults seeking asylum, and turned away because of the pandemic, and will have another

chance on may 23rd which means that title 42 is essentially being overturned, and with it. coming to the end, will there is going to be a flood of migrants at the southern border, and what is the homeland security saying about that this morning? >> well, kira, i have talked to folks who are saying they fear chaos, and they say they prepared and ready, but they are fearing, because there is a date certain, and we know that the drug cartels and the coyotes who take advantage of the immigrants desperate to get to america, and doing this almost marketing of the opening, if you will, of american's southern border, so i do think that this is, this is something that there is a high level of concern, and i have the dhs secretary on and we will

difference and we are running seven degrees cooler in ooakland right now compared to the past 24 hours, but it is not cooler into the afternoon. so if you are wondering about at the hourly forecast, this is the time stamp right up here, and this is at 10:30 and the temps will bump up into the 50s and low 60s into the interior and then at 1:00, the lunch hour, 70s in dublin and tracy at 74, and san jose at 71, and mill valley at 68, and notice at 5:00, dinner time, the upper 70s and a couple of low 80s in areas like tracy. meanwhile, down in san jose, 73, and san francisco in the mid-60s for the afternoon. wind speeds if you are looking at the timing here, this is 5:00, and look at what starts to happen at the coastline, and down to 15 to 20 miles per hour, and these are going to increase going into the overnight hours and diminishing into monday, and

30-plus miles per hour, and san mateo, and morgan hill, and expect to see the winds, and speaking of the winds how does that fare out there in the grasses. they are moderate out there, and when the wind kicks up, it can help to clear us out or make the allergies worse. the overall forecast heading into monday, tuesday and wednesday, and wednesday is the warmest day of the week, and look at what you have to look forward to, upper 80s and lower 90s in the forecast, and so we are on the way to a warm up. but shower possibilities into friday, may 6th, a system approaching to bring us back to the return of some rain to the bay area which as you know we haven't gotten much of. the forecast is looking good, 60s and 70s and back into the 60s and kira, some 90s possibilities. back to you. >> all right. you prepped us for it.

80s for areas like tracy, and we will warm up today, and then by tomorrow, we have a cooldown on the way, and thanks to the system passing up to the north. yesterday was windy into the afternoon, and this what we are expecting around 5:00. and san francisco and san mateo and the peninsula, it is going to be still breezy, but the wind is going the pick up more heading into monday. by monday afternoon, the winds will be gusting upwards to 30-plus miles per hour, and especially around the coastline, and 25-plus down to the south bay and the interior. long range outlook right now, what to expect. we have a warmersetup headed into the mid of the week, but if you are looking at the time stamp by friday, we have the possibility of showers which brings me to the drought monitor, and as you know, it is released once a week every thursday, and to give you a little bit of perspective, we fared out better than 2021 in

covid-related area. in the united states, union organizing is coming back across the nation. add this development to record supply chain problem, and the american economy may be more uneven than meets the eye. political analyst larry gurston is here this morning. if you could summarize, what is going on? >> good morning, kira, you are right. the economy is less even keeled than we might think, especially here in the bay area and silicon valley. there are changes, and you put them together, it is it therening -- threatening for those in the workforce. for some are the best profits ever for some company, and the second is the highest inflation we have ever had. and that is the impact on people, and the third thing is the record crop of young people ready to go out there and work

in the economy, and young people from 18 and 35, and you know, as they do this, they are seeing that they are not making enough money to get buy. so you put those three things together may not work for some is not working for others, and all important on this may day when people are celebrating what labor has done. >> and why unions? we have had recent news of amazon union and starbucks union, and is that because of the protection they provide? >> you have it, kira, because the federal minimum wage has not kept up with inflation. and it is $7.25 and that is less than 1938, and the worst year of the global depression that we had. so it is last raised in 2009. 20 states today, kira use that

for the benchmark of paying the employees $7.25 and that is where they start and they don't have to go higher, and that is hurting a lot of people. studies show when you are talking about union, and folks who belong to unions, make 10% to 20% more money, and you put it together, and what have you? people saying we have to do something, and organize, and as you said earlier, we have seen some successes, and over 150 elections in the first couple of months and about 50% more than last year, and the unions are winning in places like amazon, walmart and starbucks and other company, and not every single parts of them, but certain parts, and that is maybe the beginning of a change. >> so does this indicate political clout of unions? >> yes, it does at least potentially. unions in the past have been big, and 10% of the labor force
