>> good morning. >> kari, you're tracking some changes? >> yes, we're starting out with some drizzle coming through the tri-valley. take a look live at our camera, you may have to turn on the windshield wipers, other areas it's dry and you can see the stars. we have temperatures in the upper 50s with peeks of sunshine going through late morning. it will be a nice and comfortable day as we head for the upper 60s at noon, reaching 71 for a high. 77 in san jose. notice how much warmer in the south bay compared to the north bay where the clouds linger longer. we'll talk more in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. happening today, a former san francisco police officer charged in a deadly shooting set to appear in court. >> the shooting happened back in 2017. if you remember, it took three years for city prosecutors to file those charges. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live in san francisco to explain the rather unusual circumstances surrounding this

case. >> reporter: marcus and kris, five years ago that rookie officer christopher samoya was involved in an altercation which left another dead. the district attorney filed several charges against him including involuntary manslaughter, assault by an executive officer, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and negligent discharge of a firearm. the charges stem from that 2017 incident in which the officer was on his fourth day on the job, that's when he shot and killed 42-year-old kita o'neill an unarmed carjacking suspect who police say ran from a stolen van. the city agreed with a set almost of o'neill's family. the family says it's not enough, they plan to show up in court today. we'll follow the story and the outcome of the initial appearance and update you on air and online with any

developments. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you, cierra. 5:02. former mma star kane velasquez is due in a south bay courtroom for a plea hearing, velasquez accused of shooting into a truck several times in february, targeting a man accused of sexually assaulting one of his young family members. another person in the truck was injured. developing now in ukraine, evacuations continued overnight at a steel plant in mariupol.re some 500 people escaped but 200 or more are still trapped. russia's foreign minister ace the kremlin will not use nuclear weapons in ukraine but the statement comes as troops are preparing for victory day celebrations in mariupol next monday and despite objections from the city's ukrainian leaders, also u.s. defense

department now says intelligence provided helped ukraine sink a russian warship last month but the intelligence was offered without knowledge of ukraine's real intentions. meanwhile, at this hour, first lady jill biden on her way to romania, after landing in ireland overnight. she'll be meeting with ukrainian mothers and children impacted by the war. a controversial state measure allowing children over the age of 12 to get vaccines without their parents' consent is now moving to california's full senate. the senate judiciary committee approved the bill yesterday. other than vaccinations for sexually transmitted diseases, minors cannot currently receive a vaccine without permission from their parents or guardians. this bill would expand any vaccine approved by the fda and cdc. okay, so the golden state warriors continue their playoff bat well memphis tomorrow. game three takes place at chase

superfans. we talked to jeff thomas, the san francisco-based teacher has been a season ticket holder since 1975, when his dad first started taking him to the games at the oakland arena. the thomases have some of the best seats in the house, lucky, about 13 rows up on the aisle at center court at chase center. we asked him how he feels about his team headed into tomorrow night. >> it's been, you know, watching them older version of our great team, i think they got to, you know, without wiseman they have a tough road but i like our chances if they can start making some threes. >> we're good at those threes though. >> yep. >> lalooked like a painful injury, the fractured elbow looks painful. draymond green said it was worth it, laura. >> he said he'd do a few more appearances to pay that off. he's not worried about it. >> i've been that mad but i

we'll head for the low 60s, only peeks of sunshine there today and a chance of sprinkles this morning and again later on tonight as our high temperatures head for the mid-70s in the south bay, we'll see some upper 60s in much of the north bay. we'll talk about your mother's day weekend that's coming up, and mike gets a look at the roads that may be wet in some spots. >> that's right, also instead of flowers, maybe gas because the prices were up there. vallejo is a bargain, below $5 a gallon. royal gas on tennessee street, just north of the carquinez bridge. san jose prices closer to $5 rp 19 like yesterday. l&d on south king road and morgan hill, farther south you can find gas for $5.29, at the 76 on monterey road. a variety of prices there. have lay hoe has one below $5 a gallon. on the road, 65 is what you're supposed to go, we see the green to the tri-valley, a couple more green spots.

highway 84 reopened from the overnight roadwork. on the right a little bit of yellow, a little slowing between ruby hill and 680, the paving work has been cleared from the cal trans report, better news for folks coming off of 580 and out of pleasanton. looking at the north bay and across the carquinez bridge we talked about the great gas price in vallejo and a great drive, highway 37, no slowing yet. kari talked about that fog, that will be a factor. we've seen mist on the san mateo bridge and also here, the golden gate bridge, which is open for business, there we go, proven by the headlights that are moving south. it looks like a big deal but folks who travel across the golden gate bridge know this is not the worst they've ever seen. >> thanks, mike. you heard of chirping, going global. next on "today in the bay" we'll talk to a local dancer representing the bay area in worldwide street dance competition. >> super cool. we're going to get good news when we think about jobs here in

now look at the bad news. the dow fell more than 1,000 points on thursday. the nasdaq even more when you measure it as a percent, down 5% in a single day. now we were talking about this yesterday, the economy's doing well. we're near maximum employment. the stock market is not doing well. money's moving out of stocks into bonds as interest rates go up. the economy is not the stock market, and the stock market is not the economy. cnbc reports elon musk will take over as interim ceo at twitter once he's completed the purchase. that's led a number of people to wonder if musk overextended himself. he already said he sleeps on the factory floor at tesla some news. the business editor at "axios" tweeted i'm old enough to remember it was a problem twitter's ceo had only one other job ben jack dorsey on the right was the ceo of twitter, also the

like is this the video? >> right. >> still picture, just chillin'? that's the vibe, right? let's get you started on this friday morning, where we can see some clouds but at least we're going to have a clear and nice day as we go into the afternoon, but a nice sunrise, too. as we get a look at how the day shapes up for the south bay, we're starting out at 8:00 at 58 degrees and then we'll see our temperature at noon 70 with a few peeks of sunshine. i think this is going to be a really nice day. reaching into the mid to upper 70s for the south bay, and martinez look for a high of about 71 there, san francisco 64, and 69 in novato, and santa rosa reaching the upper 60s and a little bit warmer in some spots, while we'll see it cooling down in the south bay as that breezy wind picks up, kind of shifts the direction of the wind, and then on sunday, we'll see a mostly cloudy sky, even a chance that a few spots could get some spotty sprinkles,

another cold front dropping n the reason why our temperatures will be much cooler than what we usually see for early may. as we go into our hour-by-hour forecast don't be surprised if it starts sprinkling on you, light rain in the north bay but that could happen anywhere across the bay area. clearing out for the afternoon, another chance of rain late tonight. if you're going to be out there at the giants game, you'll be out doing some late night activities, just a heads up there could be some rain moving through. going into saturday, it's looking great. this will actually be the better of the two days this weekend to take mom out for mother's day and we're going to see another storm system passing just to the north of us on sunday into monday, that could bring in a chance of some more spotty showers, but nothing that we're seeing here in the forecast looks like a big significant storm or what we need to help make up that rainfall deficit that we have. we're going to see the possibility of about 0.1 of an inch of rain over the next week. it does look much better ukiah,

we could get closer to an inch of rain and santa rosa about a quarter inch of rain, but we are also looking at a nice snowfall for the sierra, could be tricky getting there, especially on sunday or coming back on sunday. that's when the snow really gets going and then we'll see the potential of more snow next week, up to about a foot in all. here we're going to see slight rain chances, temperatures cooling down, really much cooler on sunday, and monday also a slight chance of showers, we're only up to 60 degrees on tuesday and then starting to warm up after that. mike, you've been watching how the mist and drizzle may impact the commute as well. >> so far it's no accident reports attributing to conditions. the golden gate bridge the mist and drizzle may be a factor and north i just saw a whole bunch of cars heading north, i think there was a quick traffic break as they paused to remove cones and crews from the north side of the bridge. you see slowing coming of aof

the san jose police officers officer says if the allegations are proven to be true, this person has no business being in law enforcement. a san jose police officer who responded to a home recently with a mother and daughter inside is accused of performing a solo sex act in their kitchen. this is the third recent case of serious accusations of misbehavior by a san jose police officer. last week we learned that 24-year-old rookie officer de'jon packer died from a fentanyl overdose in march following a night of partying with other officers, another officer was placed on administrative leave for allegedly being box indicated when he responded to the scene of a kidnapping of a baby boy, you might recall that story. sources with knowledge of the case tell us the officer had a blood alcohol level of 0.139, nearly twice the legal limit. >> having these different incidents really led us to a place where we want to start taking a much harder look at our hiring process, our

backgrounding process and really see is there something that's being missed. even though this only involves a small number of officers, there's a spillover effect that people will start to wonder what is going on at the san jose police department when you think of this many incidents in a short period of time. >> reporter: that's nbc bay area's legal analyst steven clark, who said the d.a.'s office will likely review every case involving these officers because defense attorneys are sure to use them as conduct to poke holes in prosecutor's cases which in clark's opinion could lead to some cases being overturned. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, thank you, bob. it's 5:35 for you this morning. new overnight, santa rosa police are investigating a shooting during a side show. this happened at about 10:00 p.m. at sebastopol road and west avenue. one man was shot several times

and now in critical condition. he is expected to survive. despite hundreds of people being there, police have no suspects at this time. two people were caught on dash cam video, breaking into a truck in concord. take a look at this. the owner of that truck says expensive tools were taken and he's going public because he wants the thieves to be caught so this does not happen to anyone else. they got away with $2,000 worth of equipment. >> i do feel violated. we're new here in town and we have been feeling that it's a nice neighborhood. >> no matter how safe you feel, it could happen. concord police say the city is notlems of brazen car break-ins, catalytic converter rip-offs and property crimes. this morning berkeley leaders are reportedly giving the green light to a new community safety department that would work side by side with the police. the department would be staffed by social workers who would respond to conflicts and other

non-emergency calls instead of police officers as "the chronicle" reports last night councilmembers approved the plan but the city still has to find the funding. a live look at san jose as the sun is starting to come up. you can see some clouds in the distance and that's because the winds are a-changin'. >> i love that shot. that was nice. all right, let's get your weekend started with a look at your forecast tonight at oracle park. at 7:00 it's only going to be 58 degrees, and we do have a breezy wind that's going to continue. also high humidity, so at times it may be foggy. once we go into late tonight, it's going to most likely be drizzling and only about 56 degrees as we wrap up the game. tomorrow we have some nice weather for the mill valley music festival and at 1:00 it's about 62 degrees, reaching 63 and holding steady as we are going to see those temperatures falling late in the evening. that's maybe light long sleeves and breezy throughout the day. for our mother's day, here's

what to expect. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds across the bay area, and also some high wind gusts at times at about 20 to 40 miles per hour especially near the coast, and it's also going to be chilly as the temperatures reach into the low 60s, and for the sierra, we could see about three to six inches of snow, also a slight chance of thunderstorms just to our north. so we're watching out for all of those changes. if you will be in napa valley, tomorrow is the best day of the weekend to enjoy that time outside, because it's going to be windy and cool on sunday, and at the beach it's only going to be 59 degrees, but today we're looking at santa cruz reaching into the upper 60s with a lot of sunshine. we'll be watching that weekend forecast with all of those changes and mike, you're giving us a look at the foggy golden gate bridge. >> over here, kari, chp's warning for you this morning, watch out for fog, as you see over here. folks are used to dealing with this but from time to time we've gotten tougher to see so keep that in mind as we travel

commemorate the day in person because of the pandemic. laura garcia is here with one woman's story. good morning, laura. >> good morning to you both. you know, this year's teacher appreciation week wraps up today but not before we here at "today in the bay" want to personally shout out all the teachers who tirelessly take on the roles of educator, parent and friend to their students. after that, the newer teachers who have started their work in the middle of a pandemic, add to that as well, they managed to come out of it only to face some other hurdles from staffing to funding but for some, their purpose goes beyond the classroom. oakland's scend element stare celebrates the first teacher appreciation week in person and there's nothing better than being back in the classroom with her kids. >> getting to be in person with the students this year and celebrating teacher appreciation week in person with them and actually getting their physical

windshield wipers are working before you head out!" we'll see mist and drizzle as you head off to work and your mom's voice probably doesn't sound like that. let's look at the temperatures for today headed for the mid to upper 70s. we'll see some low 70s for parts of the east bay for martinez, hayward reaching 69. 75 in livermore and 76 in palo alto. you head to san francisco, may stay in the 50s in the marina district. you head over to the mission district it's mid-60s and upper 60s for santa rosa. as we go through our hour-by-hour forecast, don't be surprised if you see some light, spotty showers passing by especially in the north bay, where we'll see some more moisture and then later on tonight, a chance of some quick-moving showers for the bay area, really not a whole lot here, it's all clear on saturday, and that's probably the better of the two days this weekend to go enjoy all of that sunshine and nice weather. we will see some rain chances ahead, but most of it staying to the north of us, even going into next week, and it looks like
