good morning. it is saturday, may 7th. 7:00 on the dot as we take a live look outside in san francisco. cloudy skies, but it looks like the sun is trying to break through ahead of this mother's day weekend. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins

us with a look at the micro climate forecast. >> we have interesting changes ahead for this weekend. so we're starting out a little bit cooler but also cloudy, especially depending on where you are is when, eventually, you'll get some sunshine. take a look at satellite radar. this is a live look. you can see a system to our north. we have a dry system passing through right now. that's going to cool us off, but it is also going to kick up the winds heading into this afternoon. current temperatures right now, as we head out the door, in the 50s. oakland, 54 degrees. down through san jose in the mid 50s. the 24-hour temperature change, so it is not a significant drop compared to the past 24 hours. by the afternoon, daytime highs will be comfortable. here's a look at some of the headlines that we'll be talking about during the full forecast. it'll be windy and cooler. we'll talk about the rain chances and also sierra snow coming up in a few minutes. kira? >> see you in about 15, vianey. thanks. federal investigators will be in the marin headlands

investigating a small plane crash this weekend. two people on board died. we've obtained the tail member of the plane, tracked it to sacramento, and we're getting a sense of what might have happened. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports. >> reporter: we do know that the plane took off in sacramento. we also know that the plane made circles around the marin headlands before it crashed. you could see the crashed plane through the thick fog on a country ridge north of casa mill road in the marin headlands. county search and rescue teams surrounding the plane before nightfall. we, along with nbc bay area's aviation consultant, tracked the tail number on flight aware. >> i followed the flight path out of sacramento's executive airport, south side of sacramento, down through the delta, above skaggs island,

turns due south toward treasure island. then he starts descending pretty rapidly and started doing some circles over the bay. >> reporter: the animation shows the plane that appears to be in distress. >> appeared to be lost in the clouds. from what i understand, it was very foggy. the visibility was probably zero. >> reporter: that happened around noon. the faa says an emergency beacon for a small aircraft was activated at 2:15. according to the faa, the vans rv-10 experimental plane crashed in the recreational area, northwest of the golden gate bridge, around 2:40. the two people on board the plane died in the crash. >> it's a home-built airplane. >> reporter: tj is a broker and pilot instructor and has been flying since 1963. he says you have to assemble the rv-10, and it is very popular. >> it is a four-seat, low wing,

all metal airplane. >> reporter: neff has no knowledge of what type of instruments the plane has on board, but he says flying in the fog is always bad. >> you can make it legal, and the airplane itself could be legal to do it. you as the pilot have to have an instrument rating. you have to be very current in terms of your flying experience. so it's not taken lightly. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." only on nbc bay area, a thief helped himself to the tip jar and the top shelf of a bay area restaurant, and it was all caught on camera. the owner is talking to us about the costly and destructive break-in. as "today in the bay's" thom jensen reports, neighbors and customers are stepping in to help. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the burglar smashing through a plate glass door and into san jose's funny farm restaurant on the corner of san felipe at 3:30 thursday morning. >> i awoke to, you know, a bunch

of texts and phone calls. >> reporter: owners monica and ron levi jumped into the car to find the damage and police already on the scene 15 minutes later. then they saw the surveillance video, as the manager chsearche restaurant location for anything of value. >> it was sad. stealing the staff tips, that was kind of hard because they were hidden. >> reporter: about $200 in tips taken from beneath the front counter and the empty cash register on the counter eventually smashed to pieces. the owner still thinks it was an inside job. they can't think of any disgruntled former employees from the new restaurant just opened three months ago, or any other business they own. >> it is not acceptable. we won't put up with it. >> reporter: the levis learned they're not the only ones targeted in this shopping center. >> almost everyone in this plaza has suffered a break-in. a lot of them multiple times. >> reporter: ron says that the thief seemed experience. >> they knew exactly what they were going for. they just went right for the super high-end stuff. >> reporter: taking expensive

liquor, some worth hundreds of dollars. the thief took an ipad and other small items. add to that his smashing through the exterior door and randomly kicking in an unlocked door to a back office. >> destroyed the whole thing. it is useless. >> reporter: it is another couple grand in repair costs. >> the damage is more of an emotional kind of crush than the things they're stealing. because you see the wreckage and, you know, you have to do something about fixing it. the stuff that's gone, it's gone. you lost it. okay. >> reporter: san jose pd is investigating, and the levis say they've already received calls from people who think they know who this man is. the callers were forwarded to police. in san jose, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. the man accused of selling a stanford student the drugs that led to his fatal overdose has learned his fate. back in 2020, stanford

sophomore, viner, bought and took drugs laced with fentanyl and died at his fraternity house. the medical examiner ruled his death an accidental overdose. yesterday, a judge sentenced matthew carpenter, the man who sold the drugs, to two years probation. prosecutors say carpenter did spend a few days in jail but won't face additional time behind bars. viner's family says the sentence is not enough. >> today, a drug dealer who sold lethal drugs that killed our son walked free. what message did it send today? >> today is just a slap on the wrist. it is a slap in the face to our family. >> the weiner family is suing stanford and other people for ayton's death, for making sure there weren't any controlled substances in the fraternity house. in a statement in january, stanford does not agree with the allegations in the lawsuit.

it was a tense and emotional day in court yesterday for mixed martial arts star velazquez. the native is facing an attempted murder charge for trying to shoot a man accused of molesting one of miss family members. the former ufc heavyweight champ was hoping to be released on bail. he's been in jail since arrest in february. he flashed a heart symbol to his family in the courtroom, causing his wife to cry. during a high-speed chase caught on a phone camera, he fired shots at galart, hitting his step-father. supporters demand he be released from jail, noting the man accused of molesting his family member is out on house arrest. the judge did grant a new bail hearing for may 16th. until then, velazquez remains in jail. turning now to the war in ukraine. dr. jill biden is continuing her

visit in the region. she and the romanian first lady visited a romanian public school that is hosting ukrainian refugee students. the two first ladies spoke with students and teachers on the challenges they're seeing because of the war and how they plan to overcome. this all comes as more civilians are being evacuated from that surrounded steel plant in mariupol, as the battle there becomes even more desperate. kelly cobiella has the latest from ukraine. >> reporter: tonight, russian forces are still trying to break the last pocket of resistance at mariupol's steel plant. it won't take long, this russian-backed fighter said. the united nations describing the plant as a hell, with injured civilians and fighters holed up. 50 more civilians were rescued, evacuated by the u.n. and red cross. now in russian-controlled territory. russian flags are now flying in

swalwell made the request yesterday at the san francisco fbi field office. he's calling on the feds to partner with local law enforcement agencies to address the rise in crime at shopping centers across the country. we also have video of the previous incidents here in the bay area, where jewelry stores and other high-end retailers were targeted. swalwell says something needs to be done now. >> it's terrorizing retail clerks, shoppers, people around our retail centers, and at the end of the day, either criminals are going to run our communities or law and order will. >> retail crime has increased by 70% in recent years. happening today, the quest for the triple crown begins in a matter of hours with the kentucky derby right here on nbc bay area. there will be stylish clothing, mint juleps, and my favorite, the big hats. 20 horses have the chance to win the $3 million purse.

bridge. you can see the flag waving. downtown san jose, i talked about that cloud cover to start, and that's what we're waking up to this morning. we have a little bit of that sunshine trying to peek on through. the temperatures today will be running a few degrees cooler. what we have going on right now is we have a system, a dry system, so not bringing us rain today. but heading into tomorrow, if you live north of the golden gate bridge, we're going to talk about the chances of seeing some shower activity for mother's day. let's talk about the current temperatures. now in the 50s for san jose. 54 degrees. 52 in san francisco. the 24-hour temperature change running about 4 to 5 degrees cooler in a lot of spots throughout the bay area. forecasted highs for this afternoon, expect to see some afternoon sunshine. winds from the west at about 15 to 30 miles per hour. will kick up this afternoon. notice a daytime highs in concord will hit the 70s. everywhere else, we're pretty much going to top out in the upper 60s throughout the

interior valleys. now for mother's day, what to expect. well, we're going to get a mix of sunshine, but also spotty showers. so depending on where you live, if you live north of the golden gate bridge tomorrow, you could see a chance of rain or around the peninsula early sonoma, you have the highest chance of seeing shower activity in through sunday. on and off again wind gusts expected for the entire bay area. temperatures will be in the 60s. we're also talking about isolated sierra snow chances and thunderstorm chances. so if you had plans to travel to lake tahoe, i'll get to that in a second. i want to show the wind gusts. saturday by 10:00, so this is tonight. 36 plus miles an hour in san francisco. if you're hosting lunches tomorrow, the winds will be kicking up. something to consider if there are outdoor plans involved. make sure to keep in mind the wind is going to be gusty, even around dinnertime. 20 plus miles an hour. in lake tahoe, we are expecting

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas shows us the legacy this grandmother and granddaughter hope to leave behind. >> reporter: on a recent sunday at the north end of the rotary play garden in san jose, a group is gathered. >> good morning, everyone. >> reporter: they're here to break ground on an expansion of the all-abilities play space. among the group are those you'd expect. elected officials and community leaders. but perhaps the most important person? the one whose love story gave birth to this park.

>> i'm going to read something that she wrote. >> reporter: well, she isn't here, though she really wishes she were. >> it would only take covid to keep me away. it would only take having covid to keep me away. >> reporter: julie has indeed spent the last week recovering from covid, but to understand the story behind the play garden, you have to go back to the late '90s and the birth of julie's twin granddaughters, chloe and amy. julie first told us the story in 2015. >> the nurse came out with amy and ran right across the hall into the neonatal unit. >> reporter: amy had severe medical challenges and, at first, doctors weren't sure she'd make it. but after holding her for the first time, julie was. >> i just felt like she wanted to live. she wanted to be part of the world and be part of life. >> reporter: julie became amy's champion. in the process, became aware of the inaccessibility of most playgrounds.

it was an issue julie advocated for so successfully, when the san jose rotary club, of which julie was a member and one time president, wanted to give the city a grand gift to celebrate its 100th anniversary, well, they were inspired by julie to build the type of playground -- >> here we go. >> reporter: -- that amy could truly enjoy. and enjoy it she did. but amy was to be just the first of many. since its opening, 1 million people of all ages and abilities have visited the play garden. it has been so successful, the city of san jose and the county of santa collar clara are going with plans to expand the play garden. >> two, one. >> reporter: that is what the groundbreaking was all about. >> it's the most awesome, wonderful, proud feeling. >> reporter: julie says amy is now 25 but still asks about the play garden every time they talk

good morning. 7:44 right now. if you're planning on any sort of outdoor activities, it will include sunshine but also wind. i'm going to take you through the timing of everything so you're prepared. right now, live look at the beautiful golden gate bridge in san francisco. now, temperatures today will be running a few degrees cooler. live look in downtown. the cloud cover out there, it is cloudy and cool. a system is passing to our north which is sort of bringing the cooldown. it is dry though. we're not expecting any rain initially, but heading into tomorrow, we do have a couple of changes. let's talk about your forecasted highs for this afternoon so you're prepared. wind from the west, 15, 30 plus miles an hour. look at your daytime highs. oakland, 65. san francisco, 63.

if you're up in the north bay, upper 60s, low 70s. in through the interior, concord, 71. morgan hill in the upper 60s. now, once we get some clearing from the fog, we will get, you know, sunshine into the afternoon. but i know a lot of folks have questions about mother's day. here's what to expect. we're going to see a mix of sun and, yes, spotty showers. it'll depend where you live. if you're north of the golden gate bridge or the seeing showers into sunday. sonoma county has the highest chances of rain. everybody can expect on and off again wind gusts 20 to 30 miles an hour. it gets stronger into tomorrow. also, talking about sierra snow, 3 to 6 inches. your window to head to lake tahoe is pretty much right now because there is a lake wind advisory in effect. the snow showers move in tomorrow. let's take a look at the wind gusts. 10:30, look what happens in san francisco. santa rosa.

the south bay, it stays breezy. by lunch hour tomorrow, we are expecting to see the winds gusting even in through concord, livermore, san jose. so any sort of outdoor plans up through the north bay, as well, you can expect to see the wind linger into the evening, as well. 6:30. if you have tents outdoors, make sure everything is well reinforced. let's talk about the snow because there is a lake wind advisory. snow showers and gusty winds are expected for the sierra starting today through tuesday. this is going to continue. as we head in toward the later portion of the week, we do get some warming. what that's going to do is it is going to bump us up to upper 70s. kira, back to you. >> sounds beautiful. thanks, vianey. we'll be right back after this.
