to start the morning, meteorologist kari hall is tracking with what we can expect. >> it's windy out there and the high winds continue for martinez this morning and chilly temperatures, starting out at about 50 degrees. at noon 58 degrees and only make it up to about 60 today with a mix of sun and clouds and there will be those high winds continuing for this afternoon, well below normal temperatures and a few spots may get in on spotty showers we'll be watching out for that, also rain chances in tomorrow's forecast before it starts to heat up. we will have more on all of that in the forecast, coming up in just a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. developing for you now, some water customers in the bay area are facing critical deadlines this morning. >> they're being told reduce water usage by 30% immediately, that's inbenicia because of an emergency. laura garcia, surprsurprisinglys is not because of the drought. >> no, you'd think we're in this

drought so it's a big problem. good morning to you both. the critical ask is due to a pipe burst at a water treatment plant, big problem that they had over the weekend, in fact benicia's mayor says the problem started on saturday night or early sunday morning. crews have been working around the clock to fix it. but the work they say could take a week or more. part of the restrictions include no outdoor water use. as for the water coming into your homes and businesses now, benicia's mayor says it is safe to continue to use even during repairs. >> we are confident that we're going to get this fixed without too much trouble but you never know until you dig in and you see how big the problem is. >> now the cutback comes at an especially bad time after the record dry start to our new year that we've been talking about. the city is expected to give an update on the situation actually this morning so we're going to continue to follow and give any updates to people that live in

that area. they're asking people to cut back wherever they can, obviously don't water your yard, do whatever you can. marcus? >> got to cut back but good thing to hear that water is still safe to use for all the residents, too. thanks, laura. russia celebrating a victory today not in its ukraine invasions but defeating the nazis in world war ii, celebratory scenes are playing out today on the streets of moscow and western leaders are watching very closely where russian leader vladimir putin may use this occasion to escalate his assault on ukraine. first lady jill biden is in slovakia sitting down with that country's president. she made a surprise visit to ukraine yesterday on mother's day, there she met with her ukrainian counterpart president zelenskyy's wife, who has not been seen in public since the war started. >> this war has been brutal, and

that people of the united states stand with the people of ukraine. >> the first lady returns to washington tonight. let's talk about those gas prices this morning and again, nearing record-breaking territory, and making things all the more difficult for everyone just trying to make it in the bay. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us in contra costa county and bob, i hate to be the bearer of bad news but we could soon see national all-time highs as soon as today? >> reporter: correct, good morning to you, marcus. right now the average gallon of gas nationwide is around $4.30. that's just pennies way from the all-time record high. of course, $4.30 here in the bay area would be a bargain for us, for example, this shell station in san ramon $6.25 for a gallon of regular gas. which is above average but unfortunately in the ball park for the bay area. according to aaa, most of our

counties, this is from over the weekend are averaging anywhere from $5.80 to just over $6 for a gallon of gas. statewide the average is $5.82, not much more than it was a month ago, but a steep increase from a year ago when gas was just over four bucks a gallon. >> i think california that shock and awe happens at $6 a gallon and i think for the rest of the country, a lot of consumers are probably saying $5 a gallon, given the fact that the economy is seeing some strength coming out of covid, i think consumers have a little bit more appetite to hit the road, that is $4 may slow them down but i think it's the $5 mark where there's a real sticking point. >> reporter: gas buddy says prices are up because demand is going up as we approach the memorial day travel holiday and oil prizes have risen. europe wants to sanction russian oil because of its invasion of ukraine. reporting live here in san

ramon, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i went to fill up yesterday, every single grade was over $6. >> yeah, me too $6.11 for the cheap stuff. >> bob, thanks. >> that is brutal. firefighters not saying whether they know what sparked a fire that heavily damaged two neighboring duplexes in san jose. it started a bit before 7:00 last night on roundtable and benders drive near the 101/85 interchange. everybody made it out safely but more than two dozen people are now displaced and the red cross is assisting. we are now less than a month out from several key races being decided here in the bay area. and starting today, vote by mail balance the los for the june statewide primary elections start going out. >> in san jose, seven people running to replace mayor sam liccardo, we reached out to each candidate to what what they want the voters to know. some videos you're about to see is the candidates in the order

good monday morning to you. it is 5:14. headed out in vacaville, the winds coming out of the west-southwest at 13 miles per hour and stays gussy throughout today going from 45 to about 61 degrees at lunch time. it will be a cooler than normal day as some spots get rain. we'll talk about rain and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> a live look shows you how traffic is flowing into san francisco with the headlights across from the north bay, of course the golden gate bridge, a smooth flow of traffic here but 101 getting out of san francisco there may be a crash there. we'll look at the interchange 101 and 280, coming up. well, good morning, very happy monday to you. do you remember that picture of the children doing homework outside of taco bell in salinas sitting on the curb outsidemoun because they could get taco belrey internet, it was taken by a county supervisor and

really illustrated the digital divide, the haves and the have nots when it comes to the internet. the white house this morning announced 20 american internet companies have agreed to take part in a plan to provide relatively high speed internet to poor families. the companies will lower their rates, the government will subsidize the remaining cost up to 30 bucks a month making it eis enlshlly free part of $2 trillion package. spectrum and comcast are taking part. i should point out this tv station is owned by comcast. the new low-cost carrier breeze airlines is adding another route from sfo, this time to provo, utah, about 45 minutes south of salt lake and has all that great skiing. breeze saves money flying into smaller airports near big cities and saving the landing fees. uber's ceo sent a memo saying the company would slow down hiring and cut costs in an

effort to become profitable. meta facebook said this would slow hiring, robinhood cutting staff. all the companies are desperate for workers. on friday we got the jobs report showing more than 400,000 or 200,000 jobs added at a time when companies can't fill old jobs. it's estimated 11 million jobs out there looking for a person. going to cough for a second. watching shares of rivian, its original investors who were not allowed to sell their ownership as part of the companies ait went public can do whatever they want. cnbc says ford originally an investor is getting out. look at the share price $28.79. cnbc says ford is going to dump it at $26 a share at a discount to make sure it gets sold. that's unnerved a lot of investors. they're not sure why ford wants to get out so fast. we do know rivian has made fewer

yourselves out there at $6 a gallon, that's not a cheap date. >> hopefully southwest has a good deal that weekend. >> no such thing as a free supper. all right, yeah, it looks good as you are heading out this morning. we have a clear start in the south bay, also been pretty windy and we can see the clouds on the horizon as we approach sunrise this morning. take a look though, we could see some spotty rain here, starting to fill in on the radar, as we head toward 8:00 to 9:00, coming from the north bay, down into the east bay, it may rain on you just for a few minutes before it moves on the rest of the day is looking clear. now this is not what we really need. we need a lot more than that especially when you look at the bottom of the screen and see how warm it's going to be toward the end of the week. we are also seeing this active weather across the region farther to the north, with some spotty showers moving through, also that light snow still coming down in the sierra. this all as our temperature also

only reach into the low 60s for today. we're up to 59 though in hayward and 66 in fairfield, and san mateo we're looking at a high of about 60 degrees and about the same tomorrow, maybe a little bit warmer in a few spots reaching into the mid-60s as we get nor spotty showers. we clear out on wednesday, and then start to see that sunshine really warming things up. but taking a look at how much rain we could see out of the couple of spotty showers, maybe a few hundredths of an inch, but there's the possibility still of another four to six inches of snow in parts of the sierra. we go from a cool start to the week to spring and then to summer this weekend. we could see some of those valley temperatures in the upper 80s, possibly hitting 90 degrees as this strong area of high pressure builds over the desert southwest. we're looking at temperatures here though starting out only at about 60 degrees. now normal for our inland areas is in the low 70s, so it's much cooler than normal. we can leave the air conditioning off for a while and

then on thursday, it's starting to feel a little bit warmer but really starting to crank up the temperatures on friday into saturday, and then look at sunday also pretty warm. for san francisco, we're in the upper 50s today, as well as some low 60s, gussy winds through wednesday, and then on friday, it's looking nice, 70 degrees, also a really nice weekend, headed our way. mike, heading out on the roads this morning, any problems now? >> we found the one issue in san francisco. let's show folks, kari. looking at southbound 101, just at the 280 interchange, but not on the interchange. it's continuing south on 101, disabled vehicle, a flat tire in fact the latest update from chp says that vehicle is slowly rolling off the freeway so that should be clear by the time you get there. no traffic break and no lanes blocked from what i understand. getting out of san francisco 101 should be cleared shortly from that disabled vehicle. getting into the city from the east bay, that is your commute so out of the oakland maze and the smooth flow of traffic down

developing this morning in the bahamas, authorities may learn more today about the mysterious deaths of three americans who were staying at a five-star resort, because autopsy results are expected back today. the three people died in two

adjacent villas friday at the sandals emerald bay resort. other guests have reportedly been told it could have been the result of faulty air conditioning. the "today" show speaks with one guest who says the victims are husband and wife who were celebrating their 40th anniversary. only the woman survived. >> all we knew was that on friday, all of a sudden they weren't around, and the next thing we knew was there was crime scene tape around their villa. >> one couple did complain to friends feeling nauseous and dizzy. kerry sanders has the latest at 7:00 coming up after "today in the bay." 5:27 right now. next here the top stories we're following today, including a warning for drivers, the surprise conditions waiting for you if you plan on heading to the sierra. and a new project by muni will not only add bike and walking lanes but about also reduce your transport time by 25%. we'll have that story coming up.

it's monday morning, and a good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. if you recently got a smart tv you can watch us on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> first up for you, the dub nation, yes, keeping the ball rolling, the warriors and the grizzlies tonight at chase center, game four of the series. even if the dubs win, they're dealing with a surprise loss that they're not still proud about just yet so we'll talk about that a little bit later for you. they won this weekend. >> laura will have more in a little bit. we start with a look at the forecast, kari hall is tracking what we can expect. they have those huge viewing parties outside, kari. >> yes, then you got the giants game right down the street so it's going to be busy in that area this evening, at least it is a quiet start to our monday morning as we get a live look out there. there may be a couple of spotty

showers moving through, but late morning rain coming out of the north bay into the east bay, it will rain a few minutes before it moves on. be prepared for that. the rest of the day looks nice and skies clear into this afternoon and evening and we'll do it all over again tomorrow as we keep the cooler than normal temperatures. here is a look at the rain that's approaching from the north and once again, very hit or miss spotty showers but there is that chance and i'll be watching this over the next few hours. we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. marcus and kris? >> thanks, kari. firefighters are responding to a house fire in alameda. this is a live look at the scene right there, you can see firefighters still there, this is happening near bona vista avenue and eighth street if you know the area. the fire looks to be nearly out right now. we have just learned that three people were taken to the hospital with burn injuries. they're also being treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters telling us that two of the victims had to be rescued

from inside and those two victims are in critical condition. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. we want to stay on top of this throughout the morning. new overnight at least one person died and three children are in the hospital after a crash overnight in antioch. it happened just before midnight when the car rolled over on highway 4 near the laurel road off-ramp. the chp tells us two more adults were also transported to the hospital. the crash closed all eastbound lanes for more than an hour. developing this morning, authorities so far not revealing many details about a body found last night in the hills near tilden park, about a quarter mile from the children's steam train ride. the cause of the death unknown but oakland police have a homicide unit working that case. san francisco's mta starts a major redesign in a matter of hours to move riders through one of the city's busiest corridors.

>> we know it sometimes gets worse before it gets better and there will be pain in the process for drivers. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live this morning to explain the changes we can expect and how long that construction is supposed to last. good morning, sierra. >> good morning. we'll get to the time line in a moment. this project the 16th street improvement project will build on some of the progress already made with phase one of the project. this is phase two, that is slated to begin in just a couple of hours, so if you take a look at your screen, this lays out exactly where that construction is taking place. it will also add bus-only lanes between church street and poterna avenue. it will improve travel team for the 18,000 daily riders by 25%. now, the project will also improve safety on 16th street for people walking, biking or driving and there will be necessary work we don't see aboveground, upgrades to the

sewer infrastructure. we spoke with folks who take this line and work along the line and they can imagine the construction is going to cause a bit of a backup but this project they say is crucial to improving those transit times on the route. >> every time i'm on the 22, it's completely full. it's important, getting everyone faster will be great. >> so like it's going to cause a lot of traffic in the area and there's already a lot of traffic as it is, because of the stadium and yeah, hopefully like it brings less traffic in the area, but meanwhile, i think it's going to be super backed up around here. >> reporter: so the big question this morning, just how long will this project take? sf mta anticipates the project won't be complete until the summer of 2023, so we have a little more than a year which means traffic in that area will be a little disrupted for the next year as they work to

complete this project. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> hopefully it won't be too painful. thank you, cierra. >> 5:35 for you this morning. day care workers in the bay area are taking part in a national day of action, called a day without child care. now in some cases, workers will walk off the job providing at least 27 states, providers there they are set to be taking part in this. at 10:00, east bay child care providers will lead an event outside of the children's fairyland in downtown oakland. 5:36, and the warriors can actually take a commanding lead tonight, this is in their second round playoff series against memphis. >> the dubs may have a distinct advantage, though, the grizzlies may be without their best player, and his injuries adding new fuel to the already fiery series. laura garcia joins us now, laura, the warriors insist there was nothing intentional about it. >> reporter: yes, exactly.

you know, we're talking about ja morant listed as doubtful in game four after he hurt his knee saturday night in game three. this morning there are questions about how it all went down, how it all came about, when he really got hurt. he left the game in the fourth quarter, after jordan poole grand his knee. poole says he was going for the ball. here's coach steve kerr on the controversy. >> i watched the play. there's nothing to comment. there's nothing to talk about. they're playing basketball. so you know, we won. we're up 2-1 and getting ready for game four, so i don't worry about any of the other stuff. >> in the meantime, there's a loss that steve kerr is about to experience himself, but it's not on the court. his top assistant is going to the sacramento kings.

they're hiring mike brown as their next head coach, according to multiple reports here, so that's going to be a big loss for the warriors, seeing that's been with them for so long. brown has spent six seasons as the warriors lead assistant coach and once again, game four tonight at the chase center with the warriors leading 2-1 games in this seven-game series. tip-off at 7:00 p.m. so one to certainly watch. >> for sure. >> i have a friend in town, lives in l.a. but we both grew up in memphis staying with me and he's of course going for the grizzlies. i was like my friends say i probably should kick you out. >> laura is like, he's out! >> he's going to the game tonight. >> yeah, he better remember whose roof he's under. >> right. >> he's like go grizzlies -- [ whispering ] and warriors. you want breakfast or not? >> thanks, laura. thanks, laura. this is a look at highway 80

in the sierra at kingvale, looks wintery. late season snow blanketing the area and started coming down yesterday. here's what it looked like along interstate 80, more like the middle of january than the middle of may. the snow did catch a lot of folks off guard and this morning the chp is still requiring chains through the stretches of interstate 80 and highway 50 at the highest elevations. always funny to see people wearing shorts and t-shirts out there in the snow. that snow, light snow continues for us this morning across the region, parts of the sierra and also another system that's going to add to the mix a little bit more of a tricky travel getting there, as well as a little bit of rain for the bay area, but we're looking at over the next couple of days another two to six inches of snow, really great to see that happening so late in the season, but it's also much cooler than normal today, as we only make it up to about 59 in

degrees. all of the temperatures cooler than normal and tomorrow still a chance of a spotty shower, possibly an isolated thunderstorm. once all of this unsettled weather clears out on wednesday, we're going to start to warm up, feel a little bit more comfortable with livermore reaching 68. 68 in dublin. 69 in napa. oakland reaching 66 degrees and low 60s in san francisco. but as far as how much rain we're going to see, it's going to be very hit or miss. some spots might not get anything. there may be other areas up to an tenth of an inch of rain. we're watching out for that but starting out with cool weather for this week and then it gets milder and by the weekend, it's going to feel like summer as we get this strong area of high pressure building over the desert southwest. so for the bay area, that means that we are starting out with highs in the 60s for our inland areas and it will reach up to about 64 on wednesday, and then 75 you can see the jump in temperatures between thursday, again on friday, the weekend we're in the mid 80s and then for san francisco windy start to

the week with some more clouds at times, some spotty rain, but the weekend is looking nice with highs in the low 70s. mike, how is it looking now in the south bay? >> it's looking pretty nice, but i mean it's pretty predictable as well. we see the build, we saw it happening about 5:35-5:40. it's easing up a bit north 101 north of 680, that's the area here. see the little bit of orange and speeds are speeding up where we saw the camera up to just shy of oakland road. this isn't as bad as we often see. as we approach june we'll see traffic start to get lighter as school vacations for colleges, universities and elementary schools start to clear up as well. the rest of the bay moves kniesly with the typical patterns coming out of contra costa county. 5:54. police in los altos are ramping up efforts to crack down on catalytic converter thefts. a program allows drivers to get

any type of safety harness. when he got to the top, police officers were there waiting for him. it appeared to be wearing a shirt that read "support women, end abortion." last thursday a las vegas man identified as an abortion rights opponent scaled the 61-story salesforce tower in san francisco, he was arrested fortress passing and resisting arrest. it is unclear if the same person or if they are connected in any way. all new this morning, california's rising cost of living is driving more people to live south in mexico. the mexican consulate says dozens of san diegans are starting the moving process every day and it can be tempting especially for people who work remotely, but it's not as easy as just lowsing up your car and headed south. first you have to apply for legal residency in mexico which can take a few days, and then you have to pay a $169 fee for the certificate allowing you to move your stuff in.
