tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  May 11, 2022 5:00am-6:01am PDT

5:00 am
we want to say good morning to you. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. a reminder you can watch us on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online, too. wild weather across the bay area. in the north bay thunderstorms brought rain, hail, lightning strikes and one sparked this fire here. this video is from glenellen in sonoma county. you can see right there the fire, the flames going up that tree, even on the ground there was some hail there just under the flames. so fortunately that fire did not spread, good news, too. >> that is the good news but we are tracking more similar weather today, kari? >> all of that has moved out and two days we had hailstorms around santa rosa. now things are nice and quiet, and it's just really chilly as you're starting out and our temperatures just a couple of degrees above freezing right now. we are going to see sunshine, a
5:01 am
cool and breezy day, and our temperatures in the low 60s at noon, headed for about 68 degrees in novato, 71 in santa rosa, and for the south bay, we're staying in the mid to upper 60s today, cool, breezy, but yeah, sunny and we'll see more of the same tomorrow with some slightly milder temperatures. we're getting ready for a warmup by the end of the week and by friday we're starting to see those temperatures trend into the 70s and low 80s. i'm watching all of that as we go through more changes over the next few days and that's coming up in just a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? we're going to check in with mike in a little bit. first we take to you washington, d.c., that is where abortion rights this morning will take center stage in the wake of that recently leaked supreme court draft opinion. democrats are trying to pass a federal law guaranteeing the right to an abortion, an effort most believe will fail.
5:02 am
>> this morning we have team coverage for you. laura garcia is tracking the potential impact the overturn of roe v. wade may have on americans' political future and what law could be in jeopardy. first we want to start now scott mcgrew and scott, how do we expect things to pan out this morning? >> poorly for the democrats on abortion rights. their vote will not pass, marcus. now technically there are going to be a number of votes. the first vote today is to end debate. eight not actually specifically a vote on the new law, but the democrats are not going to be able to get that one even that far. they don't have the 60 yeses they need to get past the first vote. they don't even have 50, it would appear but their party boss chuck schumer says it's time america saw who is for abortion rights and who is not and he'll get that with a vote. >> and we will vote on wednesday and every american will see how every senator stands. they can't duck it anymore. >> reporter: two republicans,
5:03 am
collins and murkowski are prorights but expected to vote no because they have a pro-rights plan of their own in many ways, theirs are closer to the current set of laws and rights than the democrats' plan does. democrats are also not going to get a yes vote from one of their own and that is joe manchin. you know joe manchin often frustrates his own party with no votes. not the first time democratic leadership has held purely symbolic votes they knew would lose. last march bernie sanders forced through a minimum wage bill that failed in the senate and like abortion, didn't even get all the democrats to vote yes. democrats kyrsten sinema and joe manchin were nos on that, that vote came after another symbolic vote for voting rights, a serious bill, would have expanded vote by mail, made election day a national holiday. democrats knew when they put it on the floor they couldn't get
5:04 am
it passed, they needed ten republicans and could not get all their democrats to vote yes, including sinema and manchin. now a reminder that no matter what happens in washington today, the laws have not changed in california. what was true last month or last year is true now. a senate vote changes nothing, kris and marcus. >> thank you very much, scott. we know it will be a busy day. we turn now to laura garcia. we've heard so much about a potential ripple effect when it comes to the possible end to abortion rights but some believe even more than that may be at stake. >> yes, very much so. we heard a lot about the rationale behind that leaked decision including fears it might also eventually lead to privacy issues such as gay marriage. one political science lecturer says it could go beyond that. we've seen the demonstrations grow from outside the supreme court to just this week outside of the home of justice samuel alito, one of three justices who
5:05 am
have been seeing protests at their private residences since the leak. i spoke one on one with donna craig, a political science lecturer with san jose state university. she says the rationale of turning rights back over to the states has been used in the past to oppress americans. >> a second set of rights and alito talks about this in his draft opinion, this idea of states rights, so states rights is the idea that the federal government should interfere with the way states want to govern themselves, sounds good, it comports with federalism. the problem is states rights has also been used to enact some of the most draconian, awful repressive laws we've ever seen in our country, all the jim crow laws that kept basically apartheid in the south for 100 years were all based in this idea of states rights, so when you think about things like interracial marriage, those kinds of issues, those are also
5:06 am
potentially at risk, depending on how far this court decides to go down the road of revising the doctrine of states rights. >> legislators in nearly half the country passed laws this year to restrict abortion access or expand it with an eye on the supreme court and its final ruling is likely to come next month. now professor crane also says with midterm elections coming soon that the decision, if it's overturned, it could really galvanize democrats and supporters of abortion rights to the polls, and with so many seats up for grabs, it could impact america's political future potentially for generations. there's a lot that we have to wait and see. >> we'll be watching for it. >> it will be a busy day. thank you, laura. 5:06. new details only on nbc bay area, about the death of a 3-year-old girl at a san jose church. that church also now indirectly tied to the recent san jose baby
5:07 am
kidnapping, but that's where the 3-year-old girl died last september. police say she is a victim of child abuse, specifically from some kind of ex-orism ritual. her mother was arrested in january on felony child abuse charges, days after a video posted on youtube. sources confirm to nbc bay area that the woman in that video is claudia hernandez, the girl's mother. >> a lot of people turn on me after my daughter passed away. a lot of people thought a lot of things because after my daughter passed away, because of how the situation looked, but like i said, if you weren't there, if you don't know what happened. >> according to court documents, hernandez believed her daughter was possessed by a demon. medical examiners recently determined the girl died from suffocation and no one called 911 for two hours after that girl died. hernandez denied a request for an interview. she is now being held without bail. so far, no one else at that church has been arrested.
5:08 am
new this morning, some relief for san francisco teachers who got layoff notices in mid march. most of the teachers if not all are being retained. the district initially issued more than 300 preliminary layoff notices which they have to do but because of attrition, that is people leaving naturally, and a better financial outlook, the district now says only five teachers are expected to get final layoff notices. those workers could still be brought back if more vacancies emerge. and taking a live look at downtown san jose, you can see the sky looks pretty clear today, and that wild weather a bit behind us now. >> um-hum. starting out cold as it can be. it could be colder, but -- >> colder but you know what, at least we do see some quieter conditions out there, as you're heading out the door in the east bay, we're checking out antioch, where it's now in the low 40s and we'll stay there for the next couple of hours. you do need the heater for the start of the day but then take a
5:09 am
look at the trend going into late morning into the afternoon, we have some mid-60s at lunch time, reaching into the low 70s in concord, and san mateo will see a high of about 62, while novato will reach up to 68 degrees, really nice day and then it warms up. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you are looking at a traffic break. >> that's right, kari, looking at the san jose area northbound 87 shows that red stretch that speeds are very slow because currently they had done a traffic break starting before you get to downtown area, around almaden on-ramp, a slow drive just past the airport as marked on your map. the crash should clear quickly because it sounds like three vehicles need to be nudged off the road. we'll see. things could get a little complicated. we'll track that. the rest of the south bay, peninsula moving smoothly. no major problems out of the altamont pass, not a lot of major traffic, just starting to build over there. highway 4 notice a couple of incidents, i circled the one
5:10 am
eastbound at san marco and another one eastbound 242 around port chicago highway, both counter commute to the morning drive. traffic is very light, speeds are manageable. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the warriors can wrap their playoff series tonight, but they'll have to be without the head coach. >> steve kerr has covid and he did not travel with the team to memphis, which is where all the warrior also take on all the grizzlies tonight in game five of the conference semifinals. assistant coach mike brown will fill steve kerr's shoes as best he can. we know that's talented, too. >> yes. a live look outside chase center, where the warriors will host another watch party tonight. the plaza opens at 5:00 with tip-off around 6:30 tonight. admission for this is free. >> battle on the bluff. >> love it. just when you might have thought the pain at the pump could not get any worse, coming up on "today in the bay," the new record high for gas prices coming and the reason experts say we're not going to get any

right now at 5:13 on your wednesday morning, take a look at this shot in san jose. skies starting to light up, but it's all clear, and we're starting out with some chilly temperatures, kind of feels more like winter out there. our start of the day will be in the upper 40s, at lunch time it's 63 and 65 degrees at 4:00. we'll have a nice afternoon, make plans to get outside. we'll talk about what's ahead in our weekend forecast. >> you can't see it but kari has her coat on, chilly in here, too. headlights a steady stream, they stopped for a time as they moved crews. things are flowing again across the span. they have to move that center divide. we'll track it coming up. if only things were chill on wall street. it is set to open higher ahead of a key report on inflation this morning. right now it does look like futures are all still in the
5:15 am
green. yesterday stocks fell for the fourth straight day, giving up early gains. google kicks off its annual developer's conference today at shoreline amphitheater in mountain view. it's supposed to include the latest version of android, new features for google assistants, maps and improvements to chrome web browser. new hardware is also possible with rumors flying about the first company-made smart watch. that's being called pixel watch. >> kind of cute. gas prices getting higher for people trying to make it in the bay. the national average now sitting at a new record high at $4.40 a gallon, three cents more than yesterday but we wish we were paying that. look what we're paying instead. bay area gas prices way higher than that. san francisco averaging more than $6 a gallon for regular. the cheap stuff, san jose, oakland not too far behind. gas prices are also driving up inflation, eating up the bottom
5:16 am
line for so many americans, but experts say the reason why is pretty complicated. >> the war in russia is a big factor, but then we're also seeing concerns of covid impacting china's economy, and a potential slowdown over there. it's going to create some tension in the global oil market and it's going to put some more pressure on a market that's already tight. >> aaa's advice is conserve gas as much as you can, whether that means driving less or using your most fuel-efficient car. that's something that we do. my husband's car uses more gas so when we're out and about we take my bitty car, although there's less elbow room. >> but more money in the pocket. >> that's right. >> that's how it works. 5:16 for you this morning. oh yes, it is wednesday, which is hump day, closer to the weekend but that's not what we're excited about, because we have some good news for you. as you wake up this morning, today is a special day because today calories just don't count.
5:17 am
>> this is national eat what you want day. eat what you want day, so you can indulge. we're gifted with yummy treats our producers tell us that this is what we should have if calories don't count. >> this wouldn't have been my first choice for this morning but i'd eat every single thing on here. i don't know about the bagels. this is you. >> i told my parents, my favorite is like chili verde, the red enchilada and beans. do you have pictures? my dad was like you ask for random stuff. >> he did. i saw the text. >> adult kiddos is the family text. >> i have one, too. there we go. this was back in 2008 my friend summer and i she works at our
5:18 am
sister station in orlando, this is way before that, shrimp pasta, a plate of fries which is my favorite. >> pasta and fries? >> yes. salad, wings, spinach artichoke dip, a glass of wine and two waters. >> you have to keep it healthy. >> got to get the water in there and we ate it all. >> was it potato salad or the green salad stuff? eww. >> she had that. i didn't. i think there was ribs on the table, too. >> i'm a savory guy. the pictures made me hungry and inspired but the beautiful display in front of you, i like to indulge in the snacks but i'm a chips guy so the doritos. >> we'll save it. you want the cheese or the cool ranch? >> yes. [ laughter ] >> kari, what's your pick? >> hey so you know over the weekend we went cherry picking in brentwood and last night my mom made a cherry pie, so that's
5:19 am
going to be waiting on me when i get home today. >> i like that. i thought you were going to say some fruit. i would be like wait a minute, hold up. >> you better hope it's still waiting for you when you get home, kari. >> we might have to make another one. we got a lot of cherries over the weekend. >> oh! >> a.j. is getting some of the cherries. my daughter was just squeezing them in her fingers and smearing it on her face. >> oh look at your mama. >> my mom, so she made the cherry pie yesterday evening. >> my goodness. >> pick the ones really up high, the really dark ones. have to get on the ladder to get to those and it's cherry-picking season so it's some nice weather for that. we're starting out chilly this morning as we take a live look outside in san francisco, look at how cold it is in the north bay, where we're starting to see a lot more of the readings in the 30s. yesterday in vacaville we had the big thunderstorm and now it's 36 degrees so the weather is pretty crazy here.
5:20 am
we're at 45 right now in san jose. if you're about to head out for that workout, before you eat whatever you want today, willow glen you're starting out with temperatures at about 43 degrees this morning. you do need the layers but later on this morning, into the rest of today it's going to feel nicer with our south bay temperatures reaching the upper 60s, east san jose 69 degrees. it will be 71 in concord today. 62 in hayward. we'll see low 60s for san mateo as well and gusty winds continue in san francisco. we make it to 61 in the mission district and 71 in santa rosa, one of the warmer spots in the north bay dealing with storms. the storm track stays to our north over the next couple of day, slight chances for the north bay but it looks dry here going into the next week or so as we start to see our temperatures still going up and down. check out livermore and our ten-day forecast. we're in the upper 60s today and tomorrow, here the chips are
5:21 am
crumbling in the background. low 80s for friday and those temperatures peak on saturday, 86 and then we start to drop off on sunday. take a look at our seven-day forecast, we have low 70s here for today and tomorrow. for some of our warmest spots in the inland areas 80 degrees on friday and then 86 on saturday. we'll get some slightly cooler weather for early next week but that's a little bit warmer than normal. san francisco in the low 60s, those gusty winds and a lot of sunshine in our seven-day forecast. all right, mike, we're saving the doritos for you. how is the commute? >> yes, i'm watching to see where they're being stored. we're looking toward the roadway, what is unfortunately still on the roadway here, the leftovers from a crash, in all lanes, north 87, they have not cleared this crash as you come up toward that merge with 101 at the top of 87 and guadalupe parkway so that is causing slowing. light traffic. notice 101 shows a bit of
5:22 am
slowing as traffic starts to build coming into the area. this crash will not affect 101 except it will affect folks trying to get to 101 from 280, that is a problem, 880 may see more traffic crossing over there as well. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive but there may be a stall near the bay bridge toll plaza so we'll check on that coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:22 for you. it is so hard for so many parents really wanting a break so many of those parents if you need a break, listen up for the next story. if you are stressing having young children and it's really getting to you, one expert is issuing some reassuring words, some advice on how to limit the pitfalls. we're going to talk about that and so much more this morning right here on "today in the bay." we'll be right back. if y you're a small bubusiness, therere are lotsts of choics whwhen it comemes to yourr

new this morning, for parents feeling a little fried these days when it comes to the stress of raising children, experts want to reassure us burnout is not only real but it's natural. some mental health advisers call it mommy burnout, although house husbands and working parents everywhere, we can all relate. they say the stresses of the pandemic are compounding the problems and if it's something that you're feeling, there's no reason to feel guilty about it. >> i like to tell mom that feeling guilty, part of being a mom, part of that duty is modeling self-care for your children and also the ability to say no.
5:26 am
>> they say no is a complete sentence. some of the things they recommend to avoid burnout include teaming up with mother parents, planning ahead or structuring your day and joining young children in their activities. this story appears on nbc lx and you can check out other stories like it any time at lx.com and you can watch lx on xfinity channel 185 or over the air on 11-5. to mark asian american and pacific islander month heritage month that is researchers are talking about the need for more studies on the impact from alzheimer's. experts say people in the aapi community make up less than 5% of alzheimer's research participants. one four-year study is testing whether intervention ahead of symptoms may prevent future memory loss and dementia but researchers need more subjects to round out that data. >> it's very important to recruit them to participate because i want the treatment to work for us, work for people like me, and without them
5:27 am
participating, we won't know how the treatment, potential treatment or future treatment will be working on them. >> she says that cultural differences in treating memory loss is one of the biggest challenges in recruiting candidates. we have many more stories celebrating asian american and pacific islander heritage month. watch them all, go to nbcbayarea.com/celebratingaapi heritage month. prosecutors zeroing in on what drove the former second in command at theranos. the strategy echoes the recent conviction of founder elizabeth holmes. only on nbc bay area, four people arrested for over 30 fires here in contra costa county. what investigators knew about one of the suspects beforehand. stay with us. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:28 am
5:29 am
5:30 am
right now at 5:30, a story you will only see on nbc bay area. four suspects, more than 30 fires. ahead in a live report, authorities in the east bay now investigating whether all of those cases are connected. and literally 30 seconds ago we got the latest information about inflation. does it have some good news in it? we'll take a look. this is "today in the bay." >> let's get you started on this wednesday morning. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington.
5:31 am
>> and i'm kris sanchez. we are broadcasting not only to your tv but also on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. if you're one of the many who thought the weather was weird yesterday, you are not alone. social media buzzing about hail up in the north bay. look at that. >> that is wild. >> this is from santa rosa, almost looked like snow on the ground. it wasn't. it was hail. >> it was coming down in st. helena, too, looking at the baseball field at st.goodness, interesting home run. >> hello, may. >> and yet i live in the south bay and i mean sunshine. >> sunny all day. yeah, i had some rain very close by, the winds started to pick up, you could see the storm in the distance but it was so isolated where we had the crazy weather and where it was clear. all of that moved out, starting out with a clear morning, cold.
5:32 am
look at how cold it is in st. helena, maybe some hail still on the ground. it's about about degrees and we'll see temperatures starting out in the 30s for some of our inland valleys. low 40s for the south county and we have some mid-50s as we start out in some spots. look at today's high temperatures, really a nice recovery with some sunshine, a gusty wind and highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s. we'll talk about a warmup for the weekend, coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are still keeping an eye on the south bay? >> yes, san jose but recovering north 87, listen up folks, look up as well. speeds are quickly recovering because it's still almost, well just before the beginning of the commute for 87, so the crash cleared, just about airport parkway, the thumbs up there. now you notice coming across north 101 that's the build for your normal morning commute starting from 680 up to oakland road. it should stay about the same, no need to reroute. 87 is open and clear again. there is a crash on 280, we'll
5:33 am
check that coming up on the peninsula side, but no major issues coming up through foothill expressway in los altos. authorities arrested the people they say set more than 30 fires earlier this week in the east bay. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in contra costa county with the story you'll only see here on nbc bay area. this sound really unsettling. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. it is. these arrests or these arson suspects come as fire departments here in contra costa county and throughout the rest of the bay area for that matter are gearing up for what is expected to be a tough fire season during the ongoing drought. over a 48-hour period earlier this week investigators say four people set over 30 fires in contra costa county, in concord along highway 4, extending to hillcrest park in antioch. contra costa county fire tells
5:34 am
us that all the fires were immediately adjacent to neighborhoods and businesses, but what we know so far, none were damaged or destroyed. >> it sucks. you know, he's putting everybody in danger. look at, that's fuel, straight fuel on the ground. >> reporter: the fire department says one of the four departments arrested was on the radar screen and this suspect accused of setting six of those fires. law enforcement found him on saturday in hillcrest park, they tased him, strapped him to a gurney and took him to a hospital to be put on a psych hold. we're not showing his face because he's not yet been charged. there's no information on the other two people arrested in connection with the fires. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thank you. so don't expect the latest covid surge to end any time soon. more experts in more cities
5:35 am
believe cases nationally will continue higher. the city expects more cases with people in the hospital. >> laura garcia joins us now. you have new data on bay area cases which kind of illustrates the importance of being vaccinated. >> big time, kris. santa clara county is warning that cases are higher than even last year's delta surge. public health officer dr. sara cody says even with hospitalizations steady, the focus should be on preventing new infections. doctors and pharmacists are still stressing that people get vaccinated. new statistics from the association of pharmacists says vaccinated people are 41% less likely to die from covid than the unvaccinated. they can't count on natural immunity from previous infections since it's unclear how long that immunity lasts, and whether it can stand up to future variants. >> what we've seen is that natural immunity does not last
5:36 am
as long as vaccine immunity, so we still recommend that everyone, even the people that have had covid do go get your vaccine, do get your booster, be up to date. it's safe. it's effective and it will help protect both you and all of your loved ones. >> with more of our world opening up, people are planning graduation parties, family trips, to minimize your risk experts say make sure you're up to date on vaccinations. a second booster dose has been authorized for everyone over 50 years old and for those 12 years and older who are immunocompromised. the fda should be reviewing some of the vaccines for children under 5. laura garcia, "today in the bay." >> thanks, laura. breaking news just coming into our newsroom, inflation might be fading a little bitty bit, but still startling high. >> scott mcgrew, i know you just got the numbers from the commerce department. you're seeing them for the first
5:37 am
time just like everyone else. >> it will take time to get into the weeds in the numbers about half an hour from now i'll be able to tell you where the big factors are that it went up in here and down there, but for the meantime, we can say the headline inflation number shows when you look at this time year to year, prices have gone up 8.3%, slightly less than march, so trending good news, good-ish. when you strip out the cost of food and energy, prices could be very volatile, the core inflation is 0.06, that's month to month so this is largely good news. there you see the numbers i was talking about. president biden spoke about inflation yesterday before he had seen these very numbers. the president doesn't get numbers early. it said at the time how very peculiar the timing was on the president. the president said fighting inflation would be his administration's top priority, and he warned of further interest rates. again marcus, i'll have more information for you about specific prices coming up in
5:38 am
just a bit. >> all right, looking forward to it, scott, thank you. testimony continues today in the criminal fraud trial for the former second in command at theranos, sunny balwani. prosecutors yesterday tried to show balwani was involved in the decision to try to mislead investigate investors fraudly placing a pfizer logo on theranos products and the big pharma company never approved it. prosecutors are following the similar playbook they followed convicting former founder elizabeth holmes. >> pretty rare for a prosecution to have two chances to better prove the same fact set and that's what they're trying to do here. they're not being necessarily super creative with it, but they're trying to be careful, slow and factual. >> prosecutors are also trying to establish balwani was part of the decision to place faulty blood testing machines into walgreens stores, this is where unsuspected patients were sometimes given the wrong results. taking a live look at the
5:39 am
san francisco skyline. it is looking really beautiful out there. it is feeling rather chilly and kari shows us her map, lots of blue on there. we know that blue means cold. >> um-hum. of course we saw some hail in some parts of the bay area yesterday. what are we seeing today? meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that, starting out nice and clear there in san francisco. you can see even this point you can see the golden gate bridge, which you don't often see too often. >> and you also see that flag whipping around. so we'll -- >> a live look in dublin, as we can see that yes, it's another clear start as you're heading out in san francisco, as well as the tri-valley. we are going to continue to see these cold temperatures with us for the next couple of mornings. we're at 39 degrees right now, and then our trend head toward the low 60s at noon. as we go into the rest of today, we are going to see our highs
5:40 am
trending really nice, and just still cooler than normal, with gusty wind and highs reaching into the upper 60s/low 70s for concord and fairfield. mike, how is it looking heading out for the commute? >> looking at a slow drive in san jose. now it shifted over from 87, where we had that crash that cleared and we're looking at slower drive now for 101, because of another crash we showed you the build and now there is a crash somewhere between our camera and 880. so we're going to track that and i'll show you the camera coming up. i wanted to get a chance to show you the rest of the bay. aside from the one section of 101 which may be enhanced as far as the crash goes, we are looking at a smooth drive here right now. this evening, we have two events again in the city, we have the afternoon game for the giants so that will mean after the game is over, because it's a 12:45 game folks get out of the game and may kind of blend in with the start of the evening commute, it could be an issue for folks around the base there, getting to the bay bridge and then later
5:41 am
