>> reporter: the message is clear. they need more parking. that is because there is a lot of expansion going on on the streets of sunnyvale. to make way for the development, a lot of no parking signs like the one jaime have gone up all around. the problem is nearby postal workers rely on the street parking and say they are paying the price for the city growth. >> i can hear half an hour or 45 it's religious to park. >> reporter: he is not alone. he and postal coworkers, some travel as far as tracy in san francisco made a part of their daily routine to look for parking up to an hour before their ship starts. still, that is not enough. he says there is no parking when he gets to work. he has gotten a ticket to show for it. >> i have gotten five or six tickets. i have paid them all off, but, it was an unnecessary financial burden on me. it is not fair. >> reporter: the development

has been going on for years now and they have been putting up with the parking situation. it has gotten so bad he reached out to the mayor's office and, the city engineer. but, to no avail. >> we want to come to work and park and go to work and do our job. >> reporter: safety is a big issue for martha florez who says she was followed walking the long distance back to her car. >> i feel unsafe and i went back inside of the office and they said when i told management, one of the management he said wow, at your age? i said this is not about that it's about my safety. >> reporter: we did reach out to local officials and the mayor's office got back to us saying in part the post office is a federal agency. it was determined the city did not have jurisdiction over its use. we were not able to review parking needs or issue any

parking requirements. the city also added street parking is available on a first- come first-served basis unless there are postage restrictions and as you can see there are a lot of no parking signs around and restrictions. the mayor's office also adds when google decided to begin the expansion project, they looked into the issue of limited parking and google says they have construction workers parking on-site to alleviate the demand for parking. happening today, the suspect accused in last month's san jose baby kidnapping are due in court. they were arrested april 26th. the baby was found unharmed. attorneys say they will ask for clients to be released on bail. we spoke with a legal

representative to see if that would happen. >> for the court if the defendants are released to see if the community is saved if the defendants are released. unless those questions are answered i think they will remain in custody. >> the kidnapping suspects have not yet entered a plea . the hearing is happening this afternoon. also happening today, from court justices for the first time since the league of the roe v. wade draft opinion. they are expected to hold a private meeting today. we do not know what it will cover but we know the court has been investigating. all this comes after chief justice john roberts confirmed the authenticity of the opinion also suggesting the draft may not be the courts final work. skyrocketing inflation. not only stretching struggling families but area food banks as well. the food banks says donations are so coming in. everything is costing more forecasts. everything is getting harder to afford. the need out there is great.

sunshine. yesterday was pretty perfect. we are going to see more of the same today. we start out thursday morning with a live look outside in walnut creek. a cold start, take a look at some of the temperatures. not as cold as yesterday but, we still are pretty chilly out there. walking up the door to 43 degrees. 50 in fremont and san mateo. as we take a look at the high temperatures today, upper 60s for concord and livermore. 68 with san mateo reaching 64 degrees. today mild, tomorrow a little bit warmer. still pretty nice. never reaching 70 degrees. 75 oakland. 77 fremont. saturday is when temperatures will be peaking. temperatures for some of the spots like fairfield reaching 91. 88 in san martin while san francisco will be in the low 70s. we will see the cold front and all of the rain stay in to the north of us. and our weather now has a large

area of high pressure across the desert southwest. nudging back the onshore winds and we are seeing the wind shifting direction. going into next week there will be surges of cooler air but we stay dry. take a look at brentwood and the ten-day temperature forecast. today, very nice and mild, tomorrow, starting to warm up a little bit and then saturday, air conditioning day. we start to go back to warm but not too bad weather for us out there as we get a lot of sunshine. inland areas, low 70s today, 80 tomorrow then, reaching into the mid-80s on saturday. still much more comfortable than some of the things you will see for inland areas. san francisco, breezy winds and low 70s for the weekend. other than that we are looking at 60s throughout the rest of the forecast. how is it looking now heading across the bay area? >> one fewer thing, one less

laguna niguel in orange county. hundreds of evacuees still out of their homes this morning. how are the conditions there this morning? >> reporter: the damage is extensive. overwhelming. take a look. this is an example how bad the says. you can see part of the frame there, active flames at this moment. when we arrived, i spoke with a fire captain and he told me the winds started to finally die down around midnight thankfully. yesterday, when the fire started around 2:45, the wins were whipping and gusts up to 15 and 25 miles an hour. this is a wind driven fire. we still are dealing with that and next-door you could see a silhouette of a home here. you can see the smoldering area

in the center of the home as well. fire crews trying to make sure all of the hotspots are out. you can see just how dangerous this has become. earlier we were seeing a lot of embers flying through the air. firefighters say they can travel up to a mile away. that's a huge issue they are dealing with. if you look around, there are palm trees everywhere. you know palm trees a very flammable. i also want to show you a look overhead from new chopper4 up above. you can see the entire block basically a smoldering. from the angle you can see all of the smoke in the air billowing over this community right now. something else i want to show you guys is that while this is dealing with damage, barely calling them homes. the other side of the street i want to show you some of the homes are not even touched. that shows you how sporadic the fire is. you look right next door to

that home that has been spared, there is a little fire overhead as well coming from the ceiling. from the roof. that is what folks are dealing with out here. firefighters, i mean all hands on deck. california mutual aid response teams is one of the best in the country. i'm talking to firefighters and they are saying they are doing their best to make sure they have a good handle on the fire. they say it is a 0% contained. they do say they have a really good had a lot of. we have more at 8:30. we been tracking the wind in the area. firefighters, are they catching a break this morning? >> yes, ma'am with the wind, it's not really that out of the ordinary for this time of year. we start to see breezy evening winds picking up and what is not the usual thing we see, extremely dry for may.

today we see gusts picking up 15-30 miles an hour. very low humidity with temperatures coming into the upper 80s. when we see those fires develop in the low area, it quickly moves a pill. about 4 to 16 times faster than flattened ground. especially when you get the wins going uphill. the hot air rises from the fire and kind of preheat the grass and the trees a pill, making it spread extremely fast. really it is a good reminder in the bay area that you need to keep things low. that's the number one defense in these conditions as we continue to monitor it today. >> in the bay area waking up to clear skies and we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds in temperatures in san jose going from low 50s to the mid 60s today. a really nice afternoon. we talk about how the weather in the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. developing right now, they were in ukraine prompting a new push in finland to join nato.

ukraine. today we are live in campbell, tell us what is happening today. >> good morning. we are in the doctor's office. she is a plastic surgeon here in campbell. when she heard about the organization, she wanted to do something so she donated her entire medical supply closet and stockpile of medical supplies, items like this which actually were shipped out last week to the hospitals in ukraine we all feel something about ukraine. what made you do this? >> i have the luxury of having a private suite here and my nurse who grew up in ukraine was talking to me one day and asked if she could use our connection. she said she would donate her paycheck and i thought that was crazy. i mean wonderful, inspiring, but you know, she needed at. we can actually step in and provide support.

i didn't realize medical supplies were needed and this was the perfect opportunity. spoke about $20,000 in value. 3000 pounds? >> a forklift and a truckload of stuff we kind of just have been storing the past year with supply chain issues and so, it was more than we needed and it was the perfect opportunity. >> reporter: the organization hearts for ukraine is sending supplies to your homeland. you received feedback from these types of shipments. what have you heard? >> we are helpful. we have pictures from the doctors who receive them and they say how can you guys do so much? it's helpful. not only medical supplies but clothing and food and get into hands of the people on the ground. we have volunteers sending directly to the location

60s. we see temperatures jump up 10 degrees in some spots like concorde. take a look at fairfield friday. 91 for a high. we will see wanted to with the north bay and slightly warmer in san francisco. what is happening here is now the storm track heading to the north and a large area of high pressure building in the bay area. even into next week dry conditions as temperatures kind of go up and down. we are in the low 70s today. saturday next week. it comes down a few degrees. still warmer than normal for this time of year. for san francisco, low 60s today, a nice weekend ahead and slightly cooler for sunday with gusty wind kicking up again early next week. heading out, any promise for the morning commute? a new crash in the east bay. i'm tracking that south of 880, the slowing shows up in the

welcome back. 5:57. you are watching today in the bay. climate crisis highlighting the protection of the peninsula and natural beauty from the effects of climate change. the open spaces celebrating 50 years of preserving the morgan city 5000 acre greenbelt of public open spaces in the santa cruz mountains. one of 36 biological hotspots in the world which means it contains a high amount of diversity. it is increasingly threatened by climate change and especially wildfires. >> proactively we increase these efforts because of the

changing conditions we are experiencing. so, we are through the wild and fire resiliency program doing a lot of work in the preserves, vegetation management. that is really aimed at making the forest healthy and making the landscape resilience to fire. the work that we are doing will keep any fires that do occur, keep them low in intensity. keep them on the ground and make sure the landscapes can recover and be resilient. >> we want to make sure there is a space of 100 feet from your house, making sure it is available for firefighters, a place to take a stand. we also ask people really think about hardening those homes. what this means is, you know, looking at your house and see
