we'll tell you about the eye-popping salaries too it was one of the hottest tickets of the weekend balenciaga's new york stock exchange fashion show. a busy day ahead "early today" starts now >> good evening. i'm erin o'hearn. >> glad you could be with us i'm frances rivera we begin with breaking news. a step towards resolving the acute baby formula shortage. a military plane touched down in indianapolis carrying 78,000 pounds of special formula. another shipment will arrive in pennsylvania in the coming days. our jo ling kent reports from indianapolis >> reporter: a welcome sight for anxious parents. a c-17 military aircraft hauling 78,000 pounds of formula landing in indianapolis amid the tripling formula shortage. >> the shipment provides enough formula to take care of 9,000 babies and 18,000 toddlers for a week

it's about a half a million eight-ounce doses. >> reporter: the plane took off from ramstein air base in germany. the first flight of operation buy formula. on board hypoallergenic formulas meant for babies and toddlers with cows milk allergies the first batch which nestle, the manufacturer says has already been tested, will be sent to hospitals and health care providers in a couple of days they'll dispense it to families that need it the rest nestle says will be tested and sent out in the next two weeks. another flight carrying more hypoallergenic formula from gerber is expected to arrive in a few days and will be trucked to pennsylvania. when will shelves be full again, or at least fuller >> well, i think that's a matter of weeks in part because of the sequencing of events that takes place. shipments coming in via the military. >> reporter: the long-term solution is reopening the

shuttered abbott nutrition plant. >> now at least we can breathe a little bit. >> reporter: florida mom alexander moskowitz was glad to see the formula land for the sake of her 3-month-old dylan, who has a cow's milk allergy but she is definitely not satisfied. >> it's definitely a sense anger or betrayal that we feel if the government was aware of this, we kind of should have been more proactive in getting our hands on the formula before the shortage got to this point >> reporter: did the u.s. government drop the ball here? >> i don't think it's the u.s. government dropped the ball. certainly i can speak for usda we moved as expeditiously and quickly as possible. i think the key lesson for us learned from the pandemic in this is that efficiency is certainly important. >> reporter: as for babies that don't need the hypoallergenic formula, we don't know exactly when that formula will be flown in, but we do know that the

white house has now authorized the first two orders under the defense production act for formula manufacturers here in the u.s. for more ingredients at a faster pace, as well as temporary supplies like filters. the idea is to speed up production here in the u.s. so it can return to normal levels >> jo, thank you also breaking just hours ago, president biden has begun the second leg of his asia trip. arriving in japan to meet with prime minister fumio kishida, president biden thanked the japanese leader for joining the effort to hold russia accountable for its war in ukraine. and he began the roll-out of a new plan to compete with china's growing influence in this region >> this framework is a commitment to working with our close friends and partners from the region on challenging that matter most to ensuring economic competitiveness in the swoyft. >> today's launch of that economic framework comes before a quad leader's summit tomorrow

enriquez in the chest. witnesses say the suspect paced back and forth in the train's last car before he allegedly shot enriquez, who later died at a local hospital witnesses also told police the two men had no prior contact before the shooting, which unprovoked attack. well, covid's reign in the u.s. is not letting up as daily cases keep rising. according to new data, the nation is tracking about 100,000 infections a day the white house says the latest wave is mostly being fueled by a new omicron subvariant named ba.2.1 it has led philadelphia public schools to require students and staff to wear masks again. the city's department of public health made the recommendation for universal mask wearing, saying it will be mandatory, quote, until further notice. that mandate starts today. . funerals have begun for the victims of the buffalo mass

shooting laid to rest this weekend was church deacon hayward patterson who was 67 and roberta drury, at 32 the youngest victim she moved to buffalo a decade ago to help her brother in his fight against cancer and a security guard killed in the massacre has been honored with a posthumous bachelor of the arts degree. his son was at the college to collect the diploma. he was just three credits away from completing the degree when he died. he has been hailed a hero after firing at the shooter before being shot himself a day of fun on the water nearly took a tragic turn in seattle. a small boat with three people on board, including a toddler, started taking on water. from our seattle affiliate king 5, jessica jayner castro has that story >> down about mid bridge on i-90
