their summer vacations were two days away and now cut short. one of the victims' aunts says that she was killed trying to protect her students >> the nation was shocked when 20 children were shot in connecticut. and overnight, the father of jaime guttenberg shared this message for the parents in texas who've now had their world shattered. >> you will be okay. you will find a path forward but, for the next bunch of days and weeks, you have to get through this this horror. because people failed. i, i'm done. [ bleep ] failed our kids again. how many more times?

>> authorities identified the gunman as 18-year-old salvador ramos. a texas state senator says ramos purchased his weapons legally. >> this young man had purchased these guns, first thing he did on his 18th birthday was go to a shop in uvalde to buy these weapons legally. and that's a very sad state of affairs unfortunately, in texas. this is something that's going to haunt the people of yewuvalde for months and weeks to come >> we do know this took place, it was initially a domestic disturbance between the suspect and his grandmother in which he shot the grandmother she is alive she is in critical condition local law enforcement received a call of a crashed vehicle and armed gunman nearby, close proximity to the school.

at that point, the gunman made entry to the school, in complete disregard for human life, an evil person. started shooting anyone in the way. >> just walking through the school opening fire. >> right he was armed with some type of long rifle we're still trying to determine how he obtained that we have other law enforcement trying to make determination but once he made entry to the school, he continued shooting teachers, children, brave law enforcement, i want to praise the law enforcement. coming together and going into the school, an active shooter situation and trying to encounter this gunman who were met with gunfire the gunman was wearing body armor. we had a tactical team arrive, they were met with gunfire

it shows how evil this gunman was. he did not care about anybody. they were able to shoot the gunman and right now the gunman is deceased. >> reporter: officers ran inside this school as the gunman was opening fire indiscriminately on teachers and kids. >> that's right. i want to praise the brave men and women who went in there. several officer were shot. it goes to show you the braveness from these men and women that went into that school to prevent any further loss of life unfortunately, there are 19 children killed by this evil gunman as well as two teachers from the school. >> this is now the worst school shooting in texas history. how do you begin to break down this investigation >> it's really hard to put this in perspective right now it, as a father, as a parent, everybody else that's parents, even a law enforcement officer that went into that school, families that lost their children and the witnesses, the
