let's get back to the coverage on the texas rampage in a few moments. we still have the red flag warning for solano county in the sacramento valley. as we go throughout the next few hours, this will continue. we have gusty winds and extremely low humidity. however, we have to be very careful as we are possibly dealing with the conditions that are very ripe for a fire that develops and spreads rapidly. we see temperatures heading for 100 degrees. another very hot day, and while we are looking at a wide range in temperatures, we are in the upper 60s at half moon bay. 92 and dublin. san jose is heading for 90 degrees. much cooler air is heading our way for the next few days. i will talk about that in a few moments coming up. a horrific and incomprehensible event, that is how the governor of texas describes the elementary school shooting. >> 19 children and two teachers

died at the hands of that gunman. this morning we are learning more about who they were. third-grader annabelle guadalupe a rodriguez killed in the same classroom as her cousin, xavier lopez. he was a fourth-grader. >> stephen morales died protecting her students. her family says that she was very loved. another fourth grade teacher shot in the rampage will survive after going into emergency surgery. >> so many around the nation are now asking why did one man want the cause so much harm? morgan chesky is on the ground in texas, leading our team coverage. >> reporter: laura marcus, it is tough to put this into words. there are parents that are facing an absolutely agonizing waiting game at the civic center returned to a reunification site. this is where parents gave dna

samples to authorities so they could be positively matched with some of the young victims. second graders, third graders, and fourth graders, 19 of them killed when a gunman opened fire at when he walked inside rob elementary school. two teachers were also killed in what authorities have described as a killing spree with a gunman opening fire indiscriminately before law enforcement in ages him in a firefight, shooting and killing him. today, the campus has shut down. it is a massive crime scene as investigators try to search for a potential motive. in the meantime we are told that grief counselors will be on hand at the site for anyone in the community who need support, or to talk to someone. this campus is shut down, along with every other school. sending it to you. politicians from all over the world react to the deadly mass shooting with the sandy hok

, or all of the shootings. >> it reminds us how to we have accomplished, lots of politicians that are in office now were in office during sandy hook. thoughts and prayers are important, but a vast majority of americans want actual action. >> it is time to turn the pain into action, for every citizen in the country, we have to make it clear for every elected official in this country that it is time to act. >> democrats in the house will push a old idea in congress that, including an extension of the time it takes to do a background check, and bring background checks to gun shows. these ideas can pass the house, but, they cannot pass the senate as it is currently constructed. here is a democratic senator whose home state of connecticut is home to sandy hook. >> every ounce of love and

another shooting. the game obviously takes place as our nation works to understand the why behind the violence. >> when are we going to do something? i am so tired of getting up here and offering can -- to the devastated families that are out there. i am just so tired of the i'm sorry and excuses. i'm tired of the violence. enough. >> the coach continued by saying he hopes that lawmakers put forward a bill requiring background checks for firearms. he also had emphasized how important it is to not become numb to these continuous mass shootings at. other notable figures express their thoughts on yet another mass shooting. an actress said the cycle of violence that happens, then life goes on, it happens again and again, and the only thing that changes is that it

the better business bureau says that 70% of all online scams originate with social media with links that take you to a third-party site. if you are looking to buy formula online, the better business bureau says watch for grammar errors, do a search for the business name and the word scam to see if anything pops up . consider using a credit card because they offer better fraud protection. >> when you're using a company, a lot of the time there is no way to track it. you are liable for that. you have no way of checking who received it, or communications with the company. >> reporter: when the congressional hearing starts at 8:00, we will have dates on air and online. back to you. all right, it is time to check in with our meteorologist. let's get a look at the bay.

shoulder. however, we will show you where there may be some slowing in the east, we will check a coliseum, and i will let you know if it is a problem. an outpouring of grief this morning after the elementary school shooting in texas. 19 children and two teachers had lost their lives. just a short time ago, authorities had confirmed that the gunman was armed with an ar 15 and had no prior criminal history. across the country, flacks have been flying at half staff. here's a light look at the white house. president biden ordered the flags to be lowered at all federal building until sunset, saturday. this incident in texas comes nearly 10 years after the sandy hook massacre in connecticut. a 20-year-old gunman killed 20 children and six adults. he shot and killed his mother before he drove to sandy hook. we have learned about a grin parallel here, the texas gunmen

shot and killed his grandmother before arriving at that school. those are the latest developments coming into our newsroom. if you have not already, you can download our free nbc bay area app. today marks two years since the murder of george floyd. this is at the hands of a former minneapolis police officer. the brutality of the death sparked protests across the country and started conversations about race in america. calls for police reform have echoed across the u.s., and, president biden will sign a wide range of executive orders that aim to hold police accountable for excessive use of force. i spoke with berkeley mayor about the changes that they made in the bay area. >> george floyd was pinned to the ground, with any on his neck. seeing him slowly die due to police brutality. i think it is one of the biggest examples of abuse and

brutality in united states history. we remember the beating of rodney king in the early 90s. however, this was so horrific, so unacceptable that any person has to respond with anger. i think we need a willingness to see change. a change in how police conduct themselves in our country. a change in our criminal justice system. a change in our society. it likely will spark a national movement to reform policing and address racism in our country. these are issues that we have been dealing with throughout the whole history of our country. we were founded on systemic racism. there are actions by our government to deny african-

americans and minorities equal rights in our country. i remember seeing 7000 able marching in the streets of berkeley. thousands of cities throughout the country. they took to the streets to demand change. in berkeley, like many cities had responded to the call for change, to look at the reimagining public safety in our community. however, for the past two years we have engaged in a very important community process to look at how we can transform our approach to policing in berkeley, and establish a new paradigm that is focused on not just a law enforcement, but focused on trying to improve the health and safety of everyone in our community. we embarked on this process not knowing where it would lead us, but it has resulted in some very important policies and programs, such as launching a

specialized care unit in order to have trained mental health providers responded to mental health calls, so that police are not the first people that respond to people in a mental health crisis. it has resulted in berkeley looking at creating a new department of community safety. to coordinate their response. a response that is more holistic. it doesn't just focus on policing, but it focuses on violence prevention, public health and mental health response. looking at how we do traffic stops and ending pretext stops, and racial disparities in stopping people within our community. >> i spoke with the mayor about so much more, the protests that followed led to the creation of our race in america series here. we continue to dive deeper into these issues, so head over to www.nbcbayarea.com , in order to watch all of our 18 episodes.

>> let's check the forecast, we have been talking about the warm-up, and we have been feeling it. we have a red flag alert, still going for solano county, right? >> that will continue until 11:00, then we will see conditions improving so that if there is a fire, we can get it under control fairly quickly. we have gusty winds and low humidity across the region, and as we had to the south bay, well above temperatures are reaching into the low 90s. 90s in a few spots. we set records yesterday, and we will be very close again today. we are up to 97 in antioch. 95 in pleasanton. we are keeping it in mind that normal for this time of year is the mid-70s for the inland areas, but we still had 87 in redwood city today. 17 daly city. sanford sisco, mid 60s. the marina district and 77 degrees downtown. the north bay high is up to 79

in valley and reaching 98 degrees in ukiah. we will start to see some more active weather across the region, and much cooler temperatures. we are looking forward to that heading into the memorial day holiday, and we can see rain across the region that i don't thing that we will see much of that here in the bay area. as we go through the seven day forecast, our temperatures will drop drastically, from the mid- 90s to the upper 70s for the weekend. once again, the winds will be breezy. we will see sun and clouds, and we are looking at highs in the low 80s while san francisco will be in the 70s today. 60s for the weekend, with winds along the coastline over the next several days. how does it look for the community now, mike q mark >> we are looking at an easy drive. easing you into the morning commute. if you blitz in oakland, not any problem. we have the volume starting to build now, but we are able to maintain the speed limit past

we continue to follow the latest breaking news out of texas. thank you for joining us. i am marcus washington. >> the number of the deaths in the elementary school shooting has now grown to 21. the families of 19 children and two adults are still dealing with such enormous grief this morning. police are now revealing more about the time line leading up to the rampage. at 11:00 in the morning, police

learned of the shooting. 11 minutes later the school announced that they were on lockdown. >> the district had reported the shooting on twitter 30 minutes afterwards. 90 minutes after police were first notified, and responding order patrol agent shot and killed 18-year-old salvador ramos. investigators say he used an ará rifle, and had no criminal history. patients around the nation grieve, and we have team coverage, including the changes that bay area schools. >> we are joined with more about what we are learning. this is just heartbreaking to learn that the students were so young. >> reporter: elementary school age, it is simply horrific. yes, at least 21 people were

killed in texas yesterday. we know that two of those people were teachers, the other night teen where children, including at least three fourth- graders, and one third-grader. the third-grader was annabelle guadalupe rodriguez, killed in the same classroom as her cousin , javier lopez, a fourth grader. anne-marie garza, she was nine years old and also died. the horrific news was confirmed by her father who had posted a picture of him and her on facebook with a caption that reads our last weekend together, i miss you already. we have also learned that one of the teachers killed was ava mireles, she taught fourth- graders and was an educator for 17 years. according to reports, she was trying to protect children before she was shot and killed.

>> she was absolutely vivacious. she was definitely an adventure. it breaks my heart. i saw her for christmas this last december. her cooking was amazing. her laughter was contagious. she will be missed. i completely feel for everyone who lost a loved one yesterday. >> the students at rob elementary, just two days away from their final day of school and the beginning of their summer vacation. when you are taking your children to school, you will see a greater police presence due to this texas school mass

shooting. >> the school districts here are really prepared to help students in different ways. we are live in san jose, this is where counselors will be on hand, right? >> reporter: yes, note doubt that parents are being very careful about what they are telling their children this morning. parents say they have heard young kids ask it cannot happen here? there will be counselors available at every school here in the mckinley school district, in order to answer this tough questions. the super and tendons bay area wide send out emails denouncing violence, telling them that safety is a priority. >> this year we have a full time social worker at each of our campuses, they will be available if any students need to talk about their feelings. >> you don't want to re- traumatize them. you want to let them know that you are, as an adult, doing what you need to do in order to secure their safety.

>> reporter: police will be patrolling schools through the end of the school year. we are also learning that the contra costa sheriff's office will increase patrols around the school. school districts area wide are doing all they can to keep the students safe. back to you, laura. >> as a parent it is important to talk to your children as well. listen to their concerns. do not invalidate them at all. you know? they are very scared. although you also need to reassure them that they are in a safe place. >> absolutely, laura. >> you are a mom, sharon. >> that's right. actually, when this story broke , i was working the morning shift and my daughter came back from school and i was in tears. you have to stay strong. you have to keep it in respect of and let them know that they are safe and that we are doing everything we can to keep them safe as well. >> is an emotional time for all of us. >> it is very hard. very hard.

we have to see her children through this. >> you can't physically be with the kids all day today. >> keep the conversation open. >> the pain in that small town is fresh, active shooter incident have been going on for years. active shooter incidents in 2021 rose by more than 50% from 2020. the fbi broke down the number of incidents in a five-year period, there were 31 from 2021 alone, and there have been 61, including six in california. now, in the bay area, at the san jose railyard, tomorrow, that marks one year since nine workers were killed by a disgruntled employee. tomorrow, city and county leaders will hold a ceremony to honor those victims.

night in south texas. a little bit of good is to report as the sun begins to come up in this area. however, in fourth grade teacher that was shot while protecting her student had managed to survive an intense surgery overnight. however, the death toll could rise because there are so many people that are still in the hospital. they are still searching for a motive, just trying to figure out what had made this 18-year- old, salvador ramos to snap. he first shot his grandmother, then he crashed his truck, opening fire on this small campus of about 600 students. they were all second, third and fourth graders. they were all wearing fancy clothes in order to celebrate ending yet another school year. however, night teen of those students never made it home after the school day, and two teachers had died as heroes,

trying to protect their students. >> wendy, you mentioned they are looking for a motive, but we learn new things about him this morning? >> we are, we have confirmed that he was wearing body armor. that is why officers were taking such a long time to bring him down. it was a net lead border patrol agents that managed to shoot him. he was confirmed dead at the scene. also, they were going through all of his social media. it appears that he had alluded to the fact that this might happen. they have not been able to confirm all of that, but, something must have snapped to make him follow through. >> it is so hard to talk about this. everyone is really wondering, how do we keep kids safe in the

classroom? they are calling for more gun control. however, what has and the response in the community? what are they saying? >> i don't think that they are ready to go into the politics of all of this, quite yet. >> reporter: they are numb. they are shocked. i think that everyone believes it could not have been here, how does this happen here? i think that right now they are much more focused on the 21 families who have lost people. because it is such a small town, 75 miles from the border, everybody knows everybody here. if you did not lose a loved one in this tragic shooting, then you know someone who did. there was a man a little bit

ago, i had noticed him he was carrying his bible. they want prayers here. they are offering grief counseling. i am a mom myself. i get teary eyed thinking about this. how do you make sure that they are safe when they go back home? you are not human if you do not wonder that. i don't think that they are ready in this area to go to what happens next. i think they are just trying to deal with with the hollowness in their heart. there are no words, but that is a pretty good one. >> it is a hole in their hearts that will never heal. our hearts go out to them. i feel so sorry for them. national youth poet laureate is shining a light on gun violence following the shooting. the 24-year-old took to twitter with a poem, it reads schools scared to death, the truth is that one education under death

welcome back. san jose police have said that investigators may have prevented a workplace mass shooting. they arrested 43-year-old ron vasquez yesterday, and police showed the guns that they seized from him. velazquez was fired from a san jose construction company that wishes to remain anonymous out of fear. a court document showed that since his firing, velasquez has sent threatening messages to coworkers, including a video of himself floating and shooting guns, messages that indicate that he knew where they lived.
