about the lives that were lost far too soon. so many times we thought never again, but once again, politicians offer thoughts and prayers, but the vast majority of americans one action. this is today in the bay, streaming live. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. we will get back to the coverage of the texas rampage in just a moment. >> we have the continuing bay area fire danger in this area and i know you issued another weather alert? we have five more hours of this warning and then we should see conditions improving but we do have low humidity and gusty winds this morning meaning fire
6:01 am
could spread rapidly because of the weather conditions that we do see right now. we are headed for another hot day. in pittsburgh starting out at 78 , which is the normal high. we go well above that as we reach into the mid-90s this afternoon and we will see more clouds but an increase in humidity that will make it feel warmer. we will have a cooler air coming up in a few minutes. right now horrific and incomprehensible is how the governor of texas is describing the mass shooting inside an elementary school in uvalde. >> 19 children and two teachers died at the hands of that gunmen and this morning we learn more about who they were. among them is a third grader annabelle rodriguez killed in the same classroom as her cousin xavier lopez. >> she died while protecting her students, eva mireles was very loved and doctors say another
6:02 am
fourth grade teacher shot in the rampage will survive after undergoing emergency surgery. >> so many now asking why did one man want to cause so much. we have team coverage. >> reporter: it is tough to put this tragedy into words here in uvalde, texas. there are parents who face and agonizing waiting game at this civic center turned reunification site and this is where they gave dna samples so they can be positively matched with those victims, second and third and fourth graders and ninth 19 of them killed yesterday morning. two teachers were also killed and what authorities described as essentially a killing spree with a gunmen opening fire indiscriminately before law enforcement engaged him in a firefight and shot and killed him.

today that campuses shutdown and a massive crime scene as investigators gather evidence and search for a potential motive and in the meantime we are told grief counselors will be here today for anybody in this community who does need support and to talk to somebody. the campuses shut down along with every other school in this type community a 15,000 people, 90 miles west of san antonio. politicians are reacting to this deadly shooting with the usual message. >> so much of this reminds us of other shootings. >> sandy hook. and it reminds us of how little we have accomplished. a lot of politicians in office now were in office and then. thoughts and prayers may be important but a vast number of
6:04 am
americans want action. >> it is time to turn this pain into action. for every parent and citizen in this country, we have to make it clear to every elected official in this country that it is time to act. >> democrats plan to push a bill containing old ideas into congress this morning including an extension of the time it takes to do a background check and bring these to the sales of gun shows and those ideas could pass the house because they have before but they almost certainly can't pass the senate. here is democratic senator chris murphy whose home state of connecticut is the home of sandy hook. >> every ounce of love and thoughts and prayers we can send, we are sending. but i am here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues, find a path forward here. work with us to find a way to
6:05 am
pass laws that make this less likely. >> if sandy hook is any indication, not much will be accomplished. here in the bay area, back then we thought we could help with the smart guns and we could make the world safer. parents came here to meet with venture capitalists and this is from 2013, three months after sandy hook and together they would use american know how to protect children with something they called the smart tech project and that technically does still exist the website has not been updated since 2018. safe gun technology would not have protected the children in texas. the alleged gunman appears to have legally owned the guns he used. and a few years after sandy hook we saw politicians react to stoneman douglas in parkland, florida, with the deaths of 14 children and three teachers. mike pence praised california
6:06 am
gun laws and then president trump cause for immediate seizures of guns and a red flag laws. >> i like taking the guns early like in this crazy man's case that took place in florida. >> after that there was progress and more states adopted red flags and a bump stop man after the gunmen in las vegas used 12 rifles to kill 58 people in several states increased at the age to buy guns to 21 but the california law was just struck down by the courts. the president of ukraine said this is terrible to have victims of shooters and peaceful times. the pope said it is time to say enough to indiscriminate arms trafficking. let us all commit to ensuring such tragedies can no longer take place. we will monitor what progress we do see in the house today and it will move fast. >> we will see. thank you. >> not just lawmakers issuing this passionate plea.
6:07 am
>> comments made by the worriers coach steve kerr highlight but many parents are feeling as they wake up this morning. we are now joined from san francisco with more on the calls for change. >> reporter: we will get to the plea of steve kerr but a lot of people are waking up hugging their children as they prepared to send them to school in the wake of what happened and safety is at the top of the mind of so many here in the bay area and we do hear from local leaders in the education field about what they are doing to keep their students as well as their staff safe in the wake of yet another mass shooting and we did have a chance to speak with leaders of the san francisco school district saying while we are not aware of any threats or connections to events in texas, and abundance
6:08 am
of caution, the san francisco police department has informed us they will have an increased police presence around schools from now until the end of the school year which is next wednesday, june 1. from the classroom to the basketball court we are getting a response from the golden state worriers coach kerr. before their loss to the mavericks, we heard a raw and emotional response to the latest shooting from coach kerr and we understand the why of the violence. >> when are we going to do something. i am tired. i am so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families -- i am so tired -- i am sorry. i am tired of the moments of silence. enough. >> reporter: he continued by explaining that he hopes lawmakers take action by putting a bill requiring background checks for firearms to a boat and he also emphasized how important it is to not get numb to these

shootings. and more notable figures reacted to the violence. there was a tweet that said it happens and in life goes on and then it happens again and the only thing that changes, the literal only thing is it happens sooner and sooner and others expressing confusion like lebron james tweeting, come on, what are we doing as a nation? so many folks are waking up this morning with so many emotions as you hear from coach kerr saying enough is enough. we want to see action and we do hear from the leaders in the educational realm that they are doing what they can to keep students and staff and educators in their districts safe. a lot is going on as the nation understands why. >> we do understand the emotion of coach kerr but it does hit close to home because his family has an encounter with the victim of gun violence, his father was injured, killed in a

root in a terrorist attack. >> it is affecting so many people bringing back those moments. >> we will follow those this morning as investigators piece together what happened and the today show, savannah guthrie, is live there this morning as the community comes together to really grip together and understand what happens next and that will have coverage after today in the bay. perhaps some new answers about what led to the nation's baby formula shortage and more importantly how soon those parents can stop worrying about how they will feed their babies. >> we are live now in washington were a congressional hearing takes place and we do have a warning for parents that have been trying to shop online looking for formula.
6:11 am
>> reporter: it is easy to get scammed. good morning to you and this will take place at eight a clock this morning. the heads of three companies that make baby formula will be grilled about why there is not enough of it on store shelves for the babies that rely on it and when that will change. this hearing and the panel that oversees the fda will hear from the head of abbott nutrition which makes similac and others and the head of gerber along with the head of the maker of enfamil and the commissioner will face questioning as well. desperate parents are turning to the internet for formula but the better business bureau warns that scammers are taking advantage and they say 70% of all online scams originate on social media with links that take you to a third-party site and if you're looking to buy formula online, they recommend watch for grammar or spelling errors and crosschecked the street address and do a search with the word scam to see if anybody or anything comes up.

6:13 am
even up to the north bay there is a huge difference in the temperatures and we are reaching into the 90s here and dublin reaching 92 and 90 in san jose. we have had numerous high temperature records set yesterday and closed today but it will be cooler tomorrow with highs in the 60s and 70s and a few spots into the low 80s. so a little longer before we do get some relief and how does it look for the commute? >> if you're traveling between 12 and macarthur stations in the east bay, there was an equipment problem that is being resolved and then there are major delays meaning 20 minutes or more for folks along that line and keep that in mind and the roadways by comparison are very smooth and no problems so the delay may be avoided by taking you to the road but the build is on to the bay bridge clearing and approaching san francisco and the south bay and really easy. back to you.

good wednesday morning. we do have record-breaking heat in santa rosa yesterday. it will be hot today. the next few hours is the time to get things done. we will talk about the fire danger and cooler weather ahead coming up. here these lanes have an unusual pattern and starting to thin out there is a weird backup which usually indicates a crash in the area and they report nothing going on but it is moving and we will follow this and there is also the delay for bart. today marks two years since the murder of george floyd at
6:18 am
the hands of the now former minneapolis police officer. the brutality of his death sparking protests across the country and conversations about racism in america. the calls for police reform have echoed across the country and in a few hours the president will sign an executive order that aims to hold police accountable for excessive use of force. we spoke with the berkeley mayor about the changes being made here in the bay area. >> i remember like many americans seeing george floyd pinned to the ground with a knee on his neck and watching him slowly died due to police brutality. it was probably one of the most visible examples of police abuse and brutality in united states history and we remember the beating of rodney king in the early 90s, but this was so horrific and so unacceptable. any person had to respond with anger. this is anger over what
6:19 am
happened. and i think a willingness to see change how the police conduct themselves in our country and a change in our criminal system and our society. and it rightfully sparked a national movement to reform policing and to address systemic racism in our country. these are issues that we have been dealing with throughout the whole history of our country and our nation is sadly founded on a foundation of a systemic racism and actions by deny african americans and other minorities equal rights. so i do remember seeing 7000 people marching the streets of berkeley and thousands of people in cities throughout the country take to the streets to demand change. and in berkeley, like many cities, they responded to those calls for change to look at reimagining public safety in
6:20 am
our community. for the past two years, we have been engaged in a stop hold community process to look at how we can transform the approach to policing in berkeley and also advancing new public safety that is focused not just on law enforcement but focused on trying to improve the health and safety of everybody in our community. >> i spoke with the mayor about so much more and the floyd case in the protests that sparked the creation of our series and we dive deeper into those issues. you can watch these episodes by going to our website and we have all 18 episodes there for you to watch. it is 6:20 right now and we are looking live outside and here we have been keeping track of the forecast and this is

6:22 am
97 degrees and really hot for some of those valleys that we do have some relief coming our way as the cold front passes to the north and we will look at saturday with the green indicating that we could see rain for the north coast as well as the sierra going into the memorial day weekend and for the bay area which means cooler conditions as the high comes out of the 90s and how about some 70s? it looks much better for the next few days with partly to mostly cloudy skies at times and sunshine peeking through. memorial day will be warmer in the low 80s inland and in san francisco we will head back to the 60s with the breezy wind at times for the weekend. we are continuing with a major bart delay, 20 minutes or maybe more between 12th street and macarthur through the open oakland berkeley area and there is a delay there, but the freeways are moving smoothly there and no surprise as it

live coverage including the changes being made in the bay area. >> we have new details about these lives lost and the innocent little faces and most of the students were nine and 10 years old. >> reporter: correct. elementary school age. good morning. there is new information from the associated press, which is reporting that all of the victims were in the same classroom where the shooter barricaded himself and started shooting and at least 21 people were killed in uvalde, texas. there were two teachers and 19 children and of the children there were at least three fourth-graders and at least one third-grader and that third- grader was annabelle rodriguez killed in the same classroom as her cousin javier lopez, one of the fourth-graders. anne-marie garza was nine and she died and the horrific news

elementary school were two days away from the final day of school and the beginning of what would have been their summer vacation. >> it breaks your heart. thank you. when you take your child to school this morning, you may see greater police presence and this is due to the texas school shooting, but school districts here in the bay area are really trying to prepare to help students in different ways and this is in san jose were counselors will be on hand this morning helping out in any way they can. >> reporter: people here are going through a lot of emotions. we just saw the janitor come out here at this school and raise the flag to half staff and it was definitely a somber moment and the parents say they have heard young kids say it will happen here and that is why there will be grief
6:35 am
counselors here to answer those tough questions and the superintendent, bay area wide sending out e-mails to parents denouncing violence and telling them that safety is a priority. >> this year we do have a full- time social worker at each of our campuses so obviously they will be available if anybody needs to talk about anything and support them. >> you don't want to retraumatized them. you want to let them know that you are, as the adult, doing what you need to do to secure their safety. >> reporter: san francisco unified said police will patrol all of the schools through the end of the school year. we also are learning that the contra costa sheriff's office will increase patrols around schools and they are definitely doing their best to try to remind students that they are doing their best and keep them safe during this time. >> i know you are a mom and so many parents are waking up this

morning sending their kids off to school and then perhaps having these important conversations of what you do and how you deal with it and you want the kids to feel reassured and safe in school. truck i did give my kids extra kisses this morning and so many emotions that everybody is going through. we do have to take into consideration that it depends on the age and how you approach this issue with your kids and how you discuss it with them and it is a matter of time and taking the time to communicate with them and really know what they will do as well. >> very much so and have to validate and understand that it is okay to be scared but it is also okay to go to school and be safe. thank you very much.
6:37 am
if you or somebody you know needs help processing this tragedy, you can call the crisis line. it is open to anyone 24 hours a day and here is the number on your screen, 800, 843-5200. we have also posted it on our website, nbcbayarea.com. i did put it also on twitter this morning and i put it on facebook. >> and to use this number you do not have to deal with it alone. >> we are collectively going through it is a community and a nation. it is 6:30 seven as the sun rises here in the bay area and this is san jose this morning. we have been monitoring what you can expect today and certainly another hot one untapped as well as the red flag warning. we still have this morning and the weather alert as a result, we will see the gusty wind and low humidity meaning the red flag warning and fire danger is still high. we do start out with warmer than normal temperatures with

upper 50s and low 60s and even some upper 60s in spots. we are headed for some very hot temperatures in the inland areas once again. here we are starting out in the upper 70s in pittsburgh and lunchtime it is 92 and the air conditioning on full blast today but we will get back the natural air conditioning going into tomorrow. we will talk more about that coming up in the forecast and you are keeping an eye on bart? >> reporter: it is a major delay now so possibly up to 30 minutes now as folks are traveling through the area between the 12th street station and city center and macarthur, where in oakland there is equipment problem going on for a while and maybe over 20 minutes with a major delay so that will be an issue for bart writers as they go through the area. the roadways there are fine but i will give a shout out here to the city and i showed on the other grid also that caltrain is back to normal service and we have one more train per hour
6:39 am
than we did last week which is good news and we have a 12:45 gig which is great for giants fans but it means the game will get down and out around the evening commute so consider that as you look ahead to traffic. and there are also two commencement services. it is 6:30 nine and our coverage continues. we will take you back live with the new look at the moments leading up to the rampage and the agonizing weight so many parents have to endure. the end of affordable housing and we will hear from landlords who say that they are being pushed out of the bay area. the market is open for nearly 10 minutes now and relatively flat this morning and the dow up just a little bit and it looks like the s&p falling for a second day as investors are bracing for another update from the fed.

easy drive north of the coliseum and the tail lights headed north toward the bay bridge we do have bart delays between 12th street and the city center and the macarthur station in major delays up to 30 minutes in some cases so keep that in mind. we will track that. it is 6:43. the latest mass shooting comes days before san jose is set to look back and reflect on the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history and we are talking about the vta railyard shooting and the anniversary is tomorrow. we have the senator of san jose and thank you for joining us. first, senator, mass shootings are seemingly something we are reporting on almost every day of the week here on today in the bay and there is so much anguish in this nation and state and people are saying thoughts and prayers are not enough. we need action. >> yes. agreed. and first i would just say the
6:44 am
anguish of those families, being a parent myself and i am sure every parent and aunt and uncle and grandparents feels the same way it is incomprehensible and our hearts go out to them. but back to your question, what we do about it? we are in the bill season here in california and as you know we have some of the most stringent gun regulations in the country right now, but we are still working on it and we just passed three bills off of the senate floor yesterday during a marathon session of not knowing this would happen. but we did pass three firearms regulatory bills and one of them had directly to do with the schools. i really don't know, the challenges as you pass this legislation, even as a voting member of the state senate, you wonder and try to apply it to a
6:45 am
situation or the situation from a few weeks ago in sacramento and you wonder what it have stopped it or prevented it. >> i think we do looking at mental health and we don't of the motives behind this latest attack in texas but on the anniversary, as i said, tomorrow a year since the vta shooting in san jose, that gunmen had an arsenal of weapons as well and so many families here dealing with that heartbreak and where you are from as well. but don't you think we need to look at mental health as well and some of these instances? >> absolutely. and on the anniversary of the vta mass shooting which occurred in my district, we did focus exactly on that legislatively. last year i got $20 million out of the budget to go to vta to set up a resiliency and wellness center on the site and include red flag laws integrated into that
6:46 am
so when somebody is demonstrating or manifesting health issues a colleague or peer or coworker can help and we just passed a few days ago a bill which forces the state of california to study that model ongoing this year to make sure it is working and if it is to replicated in other high intensity workplaces around the state, but it is all about mental health and sometimes it is about guns and sometimes it is about mental health issues and sometimes it is hard to figure out what is going on exactly like in the case yesterday. >> you wish that some of these people could have gotten help earlier. the statistics on this or not good at all and the background according to gun violence archive ending in 2021, 693 mass shootings and the year

before saw 611. so what will it take to make a true difference in preventing this type of violence from happening anymore? and on the flipside, what you say to gun rights supporters as well? >> this really is not about gun rights but keeping guns out of the hands of people i think everybody agrees and you have to tie the mental health issues together with the right to carry her own firearm and we have to straighten that out right away and i think we have to get back to integrating law enforcement with our schools in a way that makes sense and we were doing that back in the 90s when i was a school board member around the time of columbine and we were running drills constantly and i am not sure how much that is happening anymore, we have to do that as well. now it's just reflecting on at my age, 65 years old, of having
6:48 am
to do drills at evergreen elementary in san jose crawling under the desk because we were afraid of a nuclear threat. who would have thought that kids would be practicing drills to protect themselves from other young people? this is something we absolutely have to intervene on. >> i do agree. as a californian i remember the earthquake drills and i pick up my kids and they say they have active shooter drills we have to do and they say mom do we stay together or separate and what do we do in those are tough conversations to have with your kids but something we have to do. thank you so much for your time this morning and for working on the legislation you are right now and hopefully we don't have to have this conversation again. >> thank you. >> this morning in uvalde and across our country it is a difficult morning and here they took the lives of 19 children
6:49 am
and two teachers and some families had a weight and agony to learn of their loved ones survived in the school understandably canceled all events including graduation for the rest of the year. >> yet another community that will never be the same. we are live at that elementary school. i do understand, wendy, you have new information for us? >> reporter: good morning to you. we do. we do have more information about what transpired at this small south texas elementary school yesterday. according to the department of public safety here 18-year-old salvadore most barricaded himself into a fourth grade classroom and started shooting and it was the most accessible and he made his way in and literally just started shooting everyone and everything he saw. we can also tell you that he is a resident of uvalde and he
6:50 am
lived with his grandparents. we do know that is fairly close to this elementary school. they are trying to find out more answers to this unspeakable crime. >> i do understand at this point in the investigation a lot of parents want to know how safe are my kids in the classroom today. it is a question for not only parents but loved ones are thinking about. the others are calling for more gun control, but we have heard that before. >> reporter: yes. we have heard that before, unfortunately. i think it is probably too soon to start talking about politics and gun control especially in a lot of these people are still waiting to see what is going to happen with people who are still hospitalized. i wanted to give you also a new piece of information. you have probably heard, and i know we
6:51 am
have reported that the gunmen shot his grandmother before wrecking his pickup truck and then started the shooting in this elementary school. she did survive the shooting and she is in critical condition at this hour. she will be a key witness if they are able to speak with her , to try to shed any kind of light on what caused this 18- year-old resident of uvalde to basically turn on his own . they are searching his social media footprint. they are doing everything they can. he has no criminal history or no gang affiliation. he lived with his grandparents. his parents, they have not been able to find them so they are hoping this one woman can be the key to unlocking what possible motive he could have had for doing the unthinkable. >> i can't imagine a grandmother going through that.
6:52 am
