"early today" starts right now good morning i'm frances rivera >> and i'm phillip mena. president biden and the first lady traveled to uvalde, texas on sunday where that devastating school shooting there killed 19 students and two teachers. the first couple laid flowers at a memorial and met with first responders, as well as families of the victims >> after a request from the uvalde mayor, the justice department will conduct a review of the police response to the deadly mass shooting according to a justice department spokesperson, the goal is to provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses, and to identify lessons learned. the director of the state's department of public safety admitting police made the wrong decision by waiting to confront the shooter. and in the face of such

unspeakable sorrow, many are stepping in to help the grieving community. the funeral costs for the 21 whoa died will be covered by anonymous donor. >> texas governor greg abbott confirmed in a press conference that an unnamed person donated $175,000 meanwhile, a custom coffin maker is contributing personalized caskets to victims' families free of charge trey ganum along with his son and more than a dozen volunteers are working tirelessly to finish them in time for the funeral services and matthew mcconaughey visited his hometown of uvalde he shared a statement which didn't directly mention gun safety, but said in part "we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us." now the fiery debate over new gun laws have been re-ignited. josh lederman has more. >> reporter: president biden with a reassuring message for

been killed and 21 have been hurt in multiple shootings across the city. and here in new york city, at least seven people have been shot and two were killed in separate incidents over the holiday weekend. >> at least six people were hurt in downtown chattanooga, tennessee when shots rang out saturday night all of the victims are teenagers, two of them hospitalized in critical condition. there have not been any arrests. police in nevada are also searching for a suspect after seven people were injured in a shooting on an interstate near las vegas. there is no word yet on what led to the gunfire one person was admitted to the icu. i. a woman was killed and seven others hurt after gunfire erupted at a holiday festival in oklahoma an argument led to the shooting and the suspect turned himself in in pittsburgh a 1-year-old baby boy was killed in a drive-by shooting police believe another passenger in the car was the intended target there have not been any arrests. police in savannah, georgia

are investigating a memorial day weekend tragedy on the water it has left at least five dead and four others injured. officials say the crash happened on the wilmington river saturday morning when two senator console boats traveling in different directions collided. nine passengers were involved. two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene the georgia department of natural resources say 45-year-old mark steagall was arrested and charged with boating under the influence. now to the baby formula crisis and the department of health and human services is invoke invoking the induction act that would give cargill priority for raw materials to hopefully speed up manufacturing prices are spiking across the country forcing parents to pay inflated price, even importing formula themselves from abroad our emilie ikeda has the latest. >> reporter: with record levels of baby formula running dry

that's up 25% from last year, and nearing prepandemic levels and on this memorial day, we may see some dangerous weather brewing in parts of the country. nbc's michelle grossman is tracking it all. hi, michelle good morning >> good morning to you both. happy memorial day yeah, we're looking at a depreciation setup in the northern plains, parts telephone upper midwest. we have a setup where we can see long track tornadoes, severe weather, gusty winds, baseball-sized hail, even some heavy snow in the rockies. taking a look at radar we're already active this morning. we've been active all night long that's going last at least through the early part of tuesday. so we're looking at heavy rain even early this morning. we're looking at a tornado threat we've had some warnings pop in and out. this is what we're looking at as we look at radar this morning. the darker colors, the yellows, the reds, the oranges, that's where that heavy rain is falling. you can see that lightning sort of exploding too this is strengthening as they move off to the east where you see that shading there, the yellow is a severe thunderstorm watch. and then we have pink, which is a tornado watch. so we're going to be watching that as we go throughout all day

today, into the early part of tuesday. so this is from the severe prediction center. we have a moderate risk we don't see that often that's 4 out of 5 on their scale. 11 million at risk for long track tornadoes, baseball-sized hail, and also the chance of damaging winds near 80 miles per hour so we're going watch this area of low pressure bring this weather as we move off to the east here today. also looking at mountain snow. some pretty heavy snow a some very summer-like too as well as temperatures in the upper 90s. all right, guys. we've been talking about that holiday travel over the weekend, and we're going look at any weather-related delays as we look at our next weather spot. >> thank you, michelle we'll talk to you in just a bit.
