morgan joins us now. hey, morgan. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are just hours away from the first of those 21 funerals happening here in this community. what happened f inside the elementary school is so great, there are now discussions to tear the school down altogether and build a new campus. they are trying to wait and not engage the gunmen. al they face a very uncertain political future in his own hometown. >> once we do get some information -- >> reporter: this morning, you valley school police chief pete toledano would've been hours away from being sworn in as a new city councilmember. but city officials say that meeting has been canceled. investigators made the call to wait, before the engaging the gunmen and stayed silent. and we see rude reached out, but no response. the city may our maintain that he is fit for office. >> he was elected, and there

are taking place monday as mourners pay their respects to the young lives cut short. the 10-year-old monte rodriguez, a little girl described as a sweet soul dreamed of going to college to become a marine biologist. her name was just one of 21 on white crosses. now covered in flowers. >> calling us for help and nobody came. >> we are wondering if there was any action towards gun- control legislation after all of this? >> reporter: there certainly has been discussion. we heard president biden mentioned he would be open to the idea of an assault weapons ban. i will be the first of its kind since 2004 that will face an uphill political battle. we know senators from both sides are meeting today to discuss a potential framework for what gun reform would look like. as for people who live in this incredibly tightknit town, they need action now.

>> morgan, thank you. >> we will have more in our next half hour. his own wife and daughter was in the school. they join us for this live interview right here. we move now to another story that we've been following closely. leaving behind a trail of destruction. some of the worst damage was reported in the small city of parada. fire officials say as many as 75 homes were damaged or destroyed. there are widespread power outages in the area. this is the second tornado to hit the area this month. thankfully, those injuries have been reported which brings us to now, is there a severe threat today? >> we do have one, guys. we can see the radar already showing heavy showers and thunderstorms down to the south. we've got flash flood watches and warnings as well. and we've got a risk for 30 million people stretching from green bay, detroit, chicago, st. louis, and texas.

damaging winds and hail up to two inches, and tornadoes can't be rolled out especially as you get down to the south of this line. we've also got high heat to talk about. buffaloes going to feel like 85, 93 in hartford, 94 in st. louis. we may also be looking at records today. rochester in new york may see a record. baltimore, parkersburg, cleveland, and kalamazoo. the good news is that it is short-lived, because one more day tomorrow with temperatures above average with syracuse, baltimore, and nashville down into charleston, charlotte, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees above average. you can see attemperatures actually start to moderate as we get towards the end of this week. >> thank you so much. also breaking overnight, russia is facing new consequences with its invasion of ukraine with the european union leaders agreeing to cut off 90% of russian oil imports. this comes as russian forces are making significant advances

in eastern ukraine and correspondent richard engel joins us now from the front lines to get the very latest. hey, richard. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a late rollover night, the european union voted to overdo oil imports banning them by sea. it could slow the oil flowing from russia to europe by two thirds by the heend of the year and maybe the hardest economic sanction against russia since this war began. it comes as russian forces are making gains on the battlefield here in ukraine. >> for the first time in the war, russia seems to be winning. at least, out in the east. here russia's slow, brutal artillery and rocket assaults are taking away land from ukraine. russian troops now threaten to encircle ukraine's eastern and agricultural heartland known as the dunbar's. the village of -- is one of

russia's areas. it is frequently hit by russian artillery. the village has been without wanting water and power for weeks. the mayor does what he can to distribute food. nfident soldiers will keep us safe, twice a week there is enough fuel to run a generator for two hours so people can charge phones. not that there is any self- service or wi-fi. volunteers have no campus to cover broken windows. fresh water is in short supply. across town, the village hospital is now a shelter. all 39 people living here, and their home destroyed. >> what do these people do? these elderly people weren't bothering anybody. and now they are under attack. in the darkness, under the

>> hey, buddy. we have tens of thousands of airline passengers who were delayed or canceled over the weekend. and then if you weren't driving, oh boy, you paid the highest pump prices ever for a memorial day. here's the thing, summer is just getting started. >> the kickoff to the summer travel season started with a whole lot of melt downs over the holiday weekend. >> we just want to get home, you know? t >> reporter: thousands of flights canceled across saturday and sunday, all for memorial day. the most effective weekend canceling more than 500 flights. american airlines also impacted with more than 120 cancellations on monday alone. >> even though they peeled back their schedule, they still found themselves with not enough pilots or flight attendance and more flights than they could operate. >> for newlyweds just returning

it is almost june 1st, what is the start of hurricane season, right? we've had our earliest strongest made landfalling hurricane in the eastern pacific. this is agatha, 45 miles southwest in mexico. 45 miles per hour, even with east. why are we considering about this? well that residual moisture will move out into the gulf and in the next five days, we've got a 60% chance of development anywhere from key west all the way down to carmen cancun. we are going to watch this and if it becomes a tropical storm, it would be named alex. and right now, it looks like the motion will be most likely moving to the northeast if, in fact, this happens. so we are going to be watching us very closely over the next five days. t but we are going to get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

elementary school, who wrote simply, there's an active shooter. help. love you. it was a shotgun loaned to him by his barber and he raced to his school just blocks away where his wife and eight-year- old daughter jade a, a second grader, were locked inside. an off-duty border patrol officer says he joined other officers and started evacuating children from the school. he later learned his wife and students had hid under desk with the potter --.are forced to take shelter in a bathroom. guiding students to safety while searching for his own little girl, he said two officers provided cover with guns drawn while he and others led children and their teachers to safety. he knew his wife and daughter were safe and he continued helping. as new details emerged, there is growing criticism of the official response to the deadly school shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead. senior law enforcement officials say more than 30 minutes past before federal officers overwrote orders to standby. the teenage and was told more than an hour after he entered

>> i was at the award ceremony at the school. so i sat down, had breakfast with my mom, got my car cleaned and went to get my haircut. >> and tell me about the text you received? >> my barber actually heard -- he thought he heard shots and he came into the parking lot and i told him that i didn't hear anything. i went inside the barbershop, sat down, and then i don't remember if he received the text first or if i received it, but there was an active shooter, i love you from my wife. >> what did you do next? >> i looked for a gun. my barber said he had a gun and we both raced over to the school and went up there. >> from your text, it looks like you got there at 11:48. >> time, i had no idea on time. i just got there as fast as i could. >> what did you see in here when you arrived? >> chaos.

abe everyone was trying to get to the school and get situated. i was just trying to get towards my wife and daughter. >> were there already police there? >> there were some there already, yes. >> what happened? did you just run in and start evacuating kids? how did that unfold? >> i was actually going over there and then i went back to my barber's truck and he gave me some shells. i put whatever shells i had in my pocket and then i took off running towards the school. >> did you ask the police that was there hey, can i go in? how did that happen? >> it was a small community. my wife works at rob and pretty much everyone knows me, law enforcement knows me, so i know the majority there. i was able to go in and i announced who i was and i made my way through. >> what happened next? >> as i was going in, i could see kids coming out of the windows and kids coming my way, so i was hoping all the kids out. trying to contact my wife and

see where my wife was at. i can't recall if i was calling or texting her, but that i met up with the officers there. we were trying to see what was going on, trying to make my way towards the door. like i said, i didn't have any of my gear. i was off duty. so i didn't go in. i met with another officer there. and his wife was one of the ones that got shot by the shooter. >> he was there looking for his wife. you were there helping kids get out, but you were looking for your second grader as well? >> yes. my wife finally texted or called me and saying that she was at the funeral home. after that, my next thing was to go get my daughter. >> your wife had made it out? >> she made it out, exactly. i didn't know where the shooter was at. i knew he was in the building. i didn't know he was still

there or not. >> did you hear any gunshots while you were in that vicinity? >> at this time, no. >> and how were the kids getting out? i think people are trying to understand how this unfolded and this chaos. where were the police and where was the classroom? >> the police were breaking out the windows on the outside and the kids were jumping out through the window. out through the window in the parking lot down the pavement heading towards the funeral home. >> did you ever see those officers that were placed outside the door, you know, obviously there was a lot of scrutiny now those actions and whether they should have gone in, did you have any indication to interact with them at all? >> at one point i was there at the door fixing to go in. once again, i didn't have any of my gear. it would have been a smart move for me. all those guys had their gear and stuff. like i said, i pulled back. my wife had texted and called me to let me know that she was okay

. all the kids were already out of that building, so i went on to find my daughter in her wing. >> what was that moment like when you saw your daughter? >> when i saw my daughter, it was a big relief. >> and after she got to safety, you continue to help? >> yeah, i carried out through all the rooms there with all her friends. i'm not an official coach, but i'm always there helping out. all of her friends, i could see their faces half of them crying in the other one panicking and crying. trying to make sure they weren't following and delaying the process. just keep them as calm as i could as they were evacuating. >> so shocking and obviously there is a lot of scrutiny now about the police response. what is your take on all that? >> to me, i believe everyone there was doing the best that they could, given the circumstances. i believe everyone there was doing everything in their power. >> and how were these last few days? >> i don't have any at all. >> because he was so haunted by what you saw?

she stood front and center on the cheerleading team at the university in louisiana. >> she was very talented. whatever she wanted to do, she could've done. >> she is such a rock star. i mean a charismatic type of personality. tyler made history when he threw a game-winning touchdown. the students carried him off of the field. it is just he was one of those like four guys. they had everything going for them until it was too hard to go on. they died by suicide this year. tyler took his own life in 2018. a year later, morgan did too. the parents sat down with us to talk about the pain that does not go away. and to share their common message. >> reporter: why is it so important to be here?

>> the easy thing to do would stay home and cry all day. 4 we have to help in any way we can. if this can happen to tyler, it can happen to anybody. we love each other and we talked every day. it is scary for other families to even think this could happen to my kit. especially if there are no red flags. we have zero red flags. morgan always had her own agenda. she knew we left her. she had a full family. it's one of our very common denominators. this could have saved them all. we all love them more than life itself. we would have given our lives for our kids. we would have given our lives for theirs >> suicide is the second leading cause. >> reporter: they found anxiety and depression and student athletes two times higher than before the pandemic. >> athletes really have so much
