fire. evacuations were listed. they wasted no time attacking the fire. it broke out yesterday. about five miles northeast. one man says he was coming home from san francisco yesterday. he got the call from his wife, talking about the fast-moving fire. >> she's rattled. she did a good job. all the priority items are in the car. try to make out through the smoke. that's what they were doing. >> they had seconds to get out of the home. it has blackened around 600 acres so far. luckily, no structures have burned. they're making progress today. air-quality advisory is in effect today. it's from the smoke. >> they are tracking the weather conditions. firefighters will be facing this. the higher humidity is good news for right there.

>> reporter: relative humidity is 70%. that slows it quite a bit rate we have cooler temperatures, and a calm wind. we are going into the afternoon. they will start to pick up. they are coming in from the west. they tend to have much higher communities with humidity. we have those wins at time, picking up to 25 miles per hour. they are gusting into the upper elevations. as we look into the temperatures towards 80 degrees, it will be higher in the inland valleys. 97 in oakland, and nice and cool in seven cisco. hi to upper 60s. we will talk about the forecast and traffic, coming up in a few minutes. >> stay with us for the latest on the fire online.

go to nbc bay area.com. funerals for the victims in uvalde, texas , happened today. students being remembered by their families. quote, amazing children. anyone would want those. we have the honor roll, hours before the shooting. services for the teacher and her husband, they will be held today. shooting comes from gunfire. were married for 24 years. they died after suffering a magical and medical emergency. they had different actions for gun violence. they have lawmakers to help with negotiations if need be. they had efforts to reach a compromise on gun safety legislation. they are on the way.

>> reporter: hi, sierra. they continue talks on gun laws. they have constructive conversations, including expanding background checks, and improving full security. family and friends gathered for the 21 funerals over the next two weeks, honoring the victims of the mass shooting in uvalde, texas. >> it hits you hard. >> a feeling of sadness and grief. president biden has witnessed this too often. >> more mass shooting, and this is more than any other president in american history unfortunately. >> reporter: another 15 shootings across the u.s. over the holiday weekend alone. president joe biden, putting executive actions to address gun violence, while putting pressure on congress to come up with bipartisan solutions.

they will be in the low 90s. it's still some of the inland areas tomorrow. a breezy window will be able to keep the coastal and parts of the bay fairly cool. as you have a live look outside the bay bridge, the sun is shining. don't forget the sunglasses today to reduce the glare. we see the traffic started to backup. they are on. we slow down for the counties. it takes about 24 minutes. 27 minutes from pittsburgh to walnut creek. kirkland pass road is from pittsburgh to walnut creek takes about 21 minutes. those routes slow down a little bit. we will take more at weather and traffic coming through in a few minutes. developing now, ukrainian president, volodymyr zelenskyy, using combat powers in ukraine. russian forces have taken hold.

we see a mostly sunny sky, and, outdoors today. it's about 70 degrees as you are heading out. they look at the morning commute. it's really starting to slow down, approaching the bay

bridge. we have a slow commute heading in from emeryville and berkeley. it's towards the bay bridge plaza. it's starting to backup. now is the time to head out. another look at weather and traffic, coming up in a few minutes. update on the breaking news this morning, a fire burning near sarasota canyon. this leaves a silverado trail. mandatory evacuation has now been lifted. orders were issued last night. the fires are 5% contained. wall street is set to open the higher markets. they are closing on a down note. this is down over 200 points. it's right there starting to look at it. this morning, netflix has the passion during mold from last now. the streaming giant, recently

announced the crackdown. they will be charged up to three dollars more per month. extra users are living outside the household. they have the policy supports not being enforced. they're trying to get users right there. customers are confused about what the company is defining as a household. they'll be something to get through. talk about being all shook up. there may soon be in the elvis shortage in las vegas. how is that so? the company controlling elvis presley's name, and his image, now hold it in the city. recently, since the assist levels, some say it could destroy the business. they generate goodness. $2 billion per year.

you see how wide-ranging these temperatures are. they are reaching 77. going to still be in the mid 60s. with half moon bay, and services go, reaching's benign downtown. northbay, 579. 89 in kayak. napa, reaching 86 degrees. we are going to have some cooler weather moving in for the weekend. maybe even some scattered showers. over and over again, we see them putting down at least some light, scattered rains for the area. make sure if you make plans, it will include that possibility of showers. i wouldn't cancel any plans. is going to be nice to have that cool weather, and maybe some sprinkles. as we go through the month of june, we don't normally see a lot of rain. sometimes, to our north, we see rainfall. unfortunately, the climate prediction center says that it's going to be drier than normal for father northern california. no surprise either, it could be

normal for the bay area as well. we have already seen some pretty warm weather and at least we have the breaks in between. we are going from the up 80s in the inland area today, to mid- 70s for the weekend. but that chance of rain, the spotty showers we are expecting in the forecast on sunday. warming up early next week. san francisco sees mid-60s over the next few days, winds at times will pick up. you see more clouds moving in towards the end of the weekend saturday. sunday, there will only be a few peeks of sunshine. there may also be some rain. they have a light shower or two in the mix. as you are heading out on the road this morning, i want you to look at the bridge. we still see a smooth flow of traffic rated their saying high winds on the high-rise. watch out for that. some of the wind gusts read they are looking pretty good. it's slowing down on the bay bridge. the lights came on, and it's a pretty much slow crawl heading across the bay bridge.

breaking now at 6:30. firefighters with their hands full in napa. a brush fire was there. we have coverage, including emerging news last night. we have a look at conditions that the firefighters are fighting. days after the texas school shooting, another critical piece is right there. the latest twist. already difficult lead. >> everything is up. everything is going up.

from 9:00 last night. the old fire burned 570 acres here. the fire was much less active. firefighters were working through the night. it's pretty cool out here. we know that should be very beneficial for the firefighters. that was around 3:35 yesterday afternoon. five miles north of the town of napa. this is through soda springs road. enough people were evacuated for several hours last night. he got a call from his wife here on soda canyon road. >> and she did a great job. all the priority items were in the car. we were watching them try to make out through the smoke. this is what they were trying

to do. >> this was in 2017. big difference between that fire and this fire, is the wind. 60 miles per hour. very little wind chill overnight. this is east of sunrise. comes up over it. we can probably see that. that's the smoke. it's a good thing. it was fortunate. workers are allowed to go back up there. of course, the residents live there as well. the evacuation order was lifted. more on the condition. it's looking like that for today. it's looking good. we will send over the meteorologist. >> is about 50 degrees. we have seen a calm wind over the past couple of hours.

just coming into the newsroom, the fire is now contained. the fire department said the fire broke out in an apartment. this was near turf and market street. they were on display. nobody was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this was on the way to that scene. this was both on-air and online. developing this morning in uvalde, texas, local police were trying to swarm themselves in a room at night. they had the council. >> today's reporter, morgan chesky, is in uvalde. >> reporter: morning here outside robb elementary school. worst school shooting in texas history. it still growing around what exactly happened, and when, when the gunman entered school property and opened fired.

the department of health and public safety revised their story overnight, sing a teacher did not leave the prop door open, but close it. it did not lock. we hear from those close to the investigation. this community depends answers. much more coming up later, on the today show. new overnight, one person is dead after being hit by a car on the south freeway today. it just happened after 10:00 last night. they went on highway 101 and 280. the pedestrian was running on the freeway when they were hit by a car. this is the 34th traffic death of the year. 20th pedestrian fatality. >> there trying to drive down the gas prices to help people make it in the bay, and elsewhere. right now, california is averaging six dollars. they are announcing a new bill yesterday. they were trying to extend the federal gas tax amounts to $.18 a gallon.

and cool and upper 50s, it's also still going to be a comfortably warm lunchtime mark. eventually reaching into the low 80s. that's above normal for this time of year. really, heating up for some of the inland valleys, reaching 89 degrees. 93 in fairfield. 85 degrees, while san francisco stays in the upper 60s. we see the wide-ranging temperatures that we have across the bay area. we are going to talk more about a cool down for the weekend. let's get ready for the commute this morning. we are taking a live look at the bay bridge, and grab those sunglasses, because the sun is glaring right up there. we see the cars backed up. we see the flow drive across the bay bridge, and the approach, coming down from berkeley, into the bay bridge plaza. we haven't seen any major incidents. i have been keeping an eye on highway 4, coming across the

we have changes in housing, and the justice system. they have the special officer in charge. they were providing the pathway for financial reparations for black california residents. >> reporter: they did a follow- up this morning. oakland, taking action to help renters. they took action to vote last night for a new rent cap. they permanently capped rent increases to 3%. they announced the owner of the rent control properties would be allowed to raise rent as much as 6%. that would have been the highest one year jump in the city's history. the bay area cities are on the first list. the most prices for one bedroom. they dropped off that list. oakland remained stagnant. that is due to the strict tenant protection laws. >> the lawmakers want to get out of the rental market. we are talking about small mom

and pop. episode two of the investigative unit was right there. overpriced, overwhelmed, over it. the take on bay area. california housing lead in a different way. they were investigating unintended consequences of government housing policies. >> i'm never going to have it counting again. >> do you count more? >> i didn't do it at all for over eight years. >> investigative reporters join us tonight. we have the landlord confessions. >> reporter: good morning. i don't know if you can afford an apartment on your own. i will keep it in mind. it was in my california home. it wasn't a real estate company. we need to keep talking about the struggles of tenants, we need to talk about small

landlords. they are getting squeezed out of the rental market by the pandemic. they have state and local policies. >> talk to me about this. why should a renter care about the small rent actions? >> if they sell, there's a good chance we are going into the bay area. they are looking at investors. they are beating others out. they offer the all-cash offers. they have the investor activities. they are during the pandemic. not deterred by the skyhigh prices. they will fix up the place. make it look great. they will often raise the rent, and often ties, significantly. that's the affordable housing that keeps the subsidies. it's by mom and pop. it likely never comes back. >> how big is this issue really? do mom-and-pop landlords have a big impact on the larger

housing market? >> reporter: they do. more than many people think. it was unused to my producers. when we learned it, uc berkeley turner center said about half of california's rental stops are structures. half of those are owned by mom and pop. they conducted a recent survey showing 3% of small landlords were looking to sell. during the pandemic, that number shot up graded >> okay. what about the cities? are they strict on the tenant protections? oakland, says about this. what are they saying? >> reporter: they are firm to protect all renters at all costs. they're trying to get out of it. they interview this as a city councilmember. what's the alternative here? do they allow landlords to be exempt from the rules? it's unfortunate if they decide to sell. some cities like san jose, are looking at other solutions.

symbol. he >> it glows so bright. it's a little foggy so you might not be able to see it with that fog, but can folks see it? will the fog dissipate? >> we are going to see this over the next several days. we get cooler air moving across the bay area. that fog was returning as well. heading to work in oakland, we see the clear start we have to the wednesday morning. temperatures in the mid 60s as you step out the door. we're going to continue to see sunshine today. really, a nice day headed for 70 degrees at 1:00. officially, in the upper 70s here. it will be warmer in san jose. 84 degrees, and 93 in fairfield this afternoon. we were trying to compare this to 64. in half moon bay, wide range temperatures. we are looking at some warm valleys tomorrow. the coast stays cool. the fog stays nearby. by friday, we are seeing more clouds. we have a significant cooldown with highs in the 60s and 70s

across much of the bay area. we have the approach of the cold front that brings in more clouds. we have a chance of rain in june. we are talking about that this weekend. especially in north bay. we continue to see slightly cooler weather. this is in the start of next week before it heats up once again. the climate prediction center, has the outlets for the month of june. sometimes, we see some rain from northern california. we have some areas to the north. it's going to continue to stay fairly dry. no surprise that it looks like we are going to see more above average temperatures. these weather patterns continue to have the high pressure over the southwest. we see the breaks in between, with the highs reaching into the mid-70s for the weekend. even a chance of showers in the forecast on sunday. early next week, we had back from the low to mid 80s. san francisco, gusty winds and clouds that time. miss, drizzle, and light rain

the fire that destroyed a home depot, is back in court, completing a plea hearing. 27-year-old, intentionally set the fire on april 9th, for that home depot in south bay. he purposely set fire. they were distracting workers when they were trying to steal tools. they were also facing separate shoplifting charges. water restrictions in south bay, go into effect starting today. customers must limit watering outdoors to two days per week. only water outside with 6:00 at night, and 9:00 in the morning. they penalize any property owners. 48 hours after measurable rain. under the new rule, they would be able to find people, and they would even be able to find people up to $10,000. time to get a look at the forecast for you. this is what we can expect.
